The sketch The sketch upon which I based my Tigrikorn character was done in a sketchbook I was keeping in 1977. I was then a high school student at Herrin High School in Herrin, Illinois. I had been fascinated by mythological creatures for years by then and was particularly fond of the unicorn. My interest in that magical creature was fueled in large part to Peter S. Beagle’s classic fantasy novel, The Last Unicorn.

in their human disguises

Besides my sketches, I would create drawings and clay unicorn sculptures in Art class. For my childrens book project, in Mrs. Morris English class my 10th grade year, I had written a story involving a unicorn as well. But mixing the unicorn image with that of my High School’s mascot was my attempt to add a dynamic edge to the creature’s traditionally softer sensibility.

“In a highschool sketchbook, was merged the mythical unicorn with a tiger... thus creating an amalgam that represents two natures: Idealistic Fantasy and Fierce Reality— Tigrikorn. He treads the line between competing worlds and ideals.

Imagining how Tigrikorn might easily be confused with a Pokemon, I created this one-panel comic at the height of the Pokemon craze in the 1990s. A black and white version of it was published in the Tigrikorn Comic Fanzine, Issue 11. I made it by scanning my ink drawing and colorizing it in Macromedia Freehand (a now-defunct software similar to Adobe Illustrator) and Photoshop.

A design featuring Tigrikorn and supporting characters in the title. (L-R) Tigrikorn, Imagidragon (top), Cyrus, Taessa (top), Mert, R.B. (“Robot Boy”) and Cyrus’ Grandpa Bijan.

This is the first Tigrikorn fanzine published as an outlet for my Cartooning Class student work from Kaleidoscope School of Art in Barrington, IL. My comic, Tigrikorn, was the lead story which was followed by student work, Web reviews and other features.

I published 44 total Tigrikorn Comic Fanzine issues. Few actually printed copies remain but online versions can be viewed at TIGRIKORN.COM
