Supporting Floriculture Since 1947 Our mission is to strengthen, advance and support the floriculture industry in Southern California The San Diego County Flower & Plant Association is a trade association of commercial cut flower and potted plant growers and supporting firms in Southern California that was established in 1947. San Diego County is the number one county nationwide in ornamental floriculture crops and in the state of California, ranks first in flower crops and nursery production.

ASSOCIATION INFORMATION

The San Diego County Flower & Plant Association works to pool growers‚ resources and present member-approved issues that demonstrate that the floriculture growers agenda is positive for the economy and environment of San Diego County. The Association also strives to communicate respect for urban development and residential concerns while furthering the cause of agriculture so that our members can continue to enjoy their profession in this region.

Member Services • The Association provides its members with many resources that encourage productivity and success.

• Provides annual scholarships to local students interested in pursuing careers in horticulture and floriculture.

Informational and educational meetings keep members apprised of issues and concerns directly related to their operations, such as agricultural survival in urban areas, pesticide application, water runoff and conservation, labor relations and energy savings.

Dear members and friends of the SDCF&PA, 2022 is a special year for the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association: it marks our 75th anniversary! What an exciting milestone for our association! It’s a great time to look back at how far we have come and look ahead at what the future may hold. It’s a time to reflect on the resilience of our industry and its members. Since 1947, our member companies have weathered ups and downs, embraced challenges and opportunities, and above all stuck together as an association, supporting each other and strengthening the importance of the horticulture segment in San Diego County.

The last 75 years have seen a lot of changes: the types of crops that are grown in our county, cultivation practices evolved, companies came and went or shifted focus, crops are brought to market in new ways, and maybe the biggest change has been to where our crops are grown as we’ve watched former flower fields turn into housing developments and agricultural acreage moving from coastal regions to inland areas. But what has remained is the dedication of the people who work in our industry and make up this association. It’s our hard-working and closeknit network of member companies that makes me excited about the opportunities and challenges ahead, and fills me with confidence that the SDCF&PA will continue to play an integral part in strengthening the horticulture industry in San Diego County and beyond. As the famous proverb goes: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” I know that as an association, we will continue to go far together!

ASSOCIATION INFORMATION

We all know that farmers are a tough bunch and aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty and do whatever it takes to get the job done. This mindset played a big role in keeping our association and industry thriving for 75 years and counting. As an association of “farmers” and its allied trades, our founding fathers believed in “strength in numbers” when they formed the SDCF&PA in 1947, and to this day we remain a group of dedicated individuals who support each other for the benefit of our industry. I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this amazing group and to have the honor of serving as its president this year.

Cheers to a successful 2022 for our association, our industry, and each and every one of you! Let’s embrace what the future has in store for us, as we embrace our history and heritage. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Marilu Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund Since 1975, the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association has annually presented scholarships to worthy students studying floriculture at an accredited college or university. Our goal is to encourage young people to plan a floriculture career in San Diego by awarding this scholarship to residents of California. In honor of our dear departed friend and her many contributions in advancing the floriculture industry, the Association Board of Directors chose to dedicate this scholarship program in the memory of Marilu Johnson. In the twenty years that Marilu served as executive secretary of the Association, her efforts to promote the industry were tireless. The 2021 Marilu John Scholarship recipients are: • Vittoria “Torrie” Cutbirth, majoring in Environmental Horticulture • Christine Elizabeth Villa, majoring in Sustainable Horticulture and Sustainable Landscape Design • Peter J. René van Rems Scholarship Fund In 2019 the San Diego County Flower & Plant Association added this scholarship to encourage young people to plan for a career in floral design.

The 2021 René van Rems Scholarship recipient is: • Kiara Benavides, majoring in Agriculture Science with an emphasis in Ornamental Horticulture

Throughout his career of 40+ years, René has been an avid supporter of the floral industry on a regional, national and international level. Recognized as an expert in his field, he is known to be generous in volunteering his time and expertise for the benefit of the industry and for various non-profit organizations.

San Diego County Flower & Plant Association Awards Scholarships to Horticulture Students Scholarships are funded through donations by the SDCF&PA members and given out annually to undergraduate students in horticulture and related fields. In order to be eligible, applicants must be residents of California, show a commitment to floriculture/horticulture both as students and in their career goals, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients are selected by the association’s scholarship committee.

You actually don’t have to be a member to partake in our events but why wouldn’t you join. You get to rub elbows with people just like you. People who have a great passion for our industry, and as we know Nursery people are the best kind of people!

Olive Hill Greenhouses, Inc. How did you get involved with the SDCF&PA? When I started in business in 1973 as a foliage plant grower, I joined the Living Plant Growers Association. At that time the SDCFA seemed mainly for flower growers. About 1980 the LPGA group dissolved into the SDCFA and the flower growing group added “& Plant” to their name. They welcomed us into their group and we have enjoyed the fit ever since. What is the best thing about our association or being a member of our association? The best thing is being able to get together quarterly, barring Covid, with friends, competitors, customers, and suppliers. Another nice thing is having a central person (thank you Jan!) to relay pertinent information about our business and members. What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a member?
