9 Education 9 Financial Stability 9 Health and Basic Needs In 2008, United Way set out to determine what accomplishments the people of our communities wanted to see take place in the years ahead. We listened and put plans in motion to realize those hopes – by 2020. Our focus became clear – our communities want and need advances in three critical areas…

Our 2020 goals for this decade are:

EDUCATION United Way is a community problem solver, working with partners to have a collective impact to build stronger communities by focusing on the building blocks of a good life.

By 2020, we will increase the number of students reading at appropriate grade levels by 50% in every grade in order to reach the community goal of improving on-time high school graduation rates by 50%.

FINANCIAL STABILITY By 2020, we will increase the number of low and moderate income families who are financially stable by providing asset development tools through a partner network.

HEALTH AND BASIC NEEDS By 2020, we will significantly increase the number of residents who receive prescription care, and access to needed goods and supplies through product philanthropy.

The Power Reading program, featuring Reading Plus software, incorporates Internet-based reading improvement tools provided to schools, workplaces and nonprofit organizations.

The United for Literacy partnership is a multistage strategy to increase the number of graduating students reading at or above grade level.

The Imagination Library program provides a brand-new age appropriate book for each registered preschooler every month until they turn five years old and organizes volunteer led reading groups. There are more than 800 preschoolers currently enrolled.

By utilizing advanced technology we can create customized silent reading lessons for students encouraging them to proceed at their own pace.

Reading proficiency is recognized as the foundation for improved literacy and has become a serious problem for a majority of our students and the many employees.

We also sponsor the Born Learning program to help parents and caregivers provide rich early learning opportunities to kids under the age of five. Over 1,000 current users in NSBC.

With we are able to provide in person volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) as well as free online tax returns. To address the obstacles preventing hard-working families from getting ahead financially, we launched the Financial Stability Partnership, promoting strategies to help families meet their basic needs while gaining opportunities to improve their lives. Over 30 partners are engaged to help local families build financial stability for themselves and our community

This program gives us the opportunity to continue working with families to create asset development strategies (C.A.S.H) with the goal of lifting them out of poverty and creating a solid financial foundation for themselves and their children.

The United Way Coast2Coast Discount RX program gives users access to discounts of up to 75% on over 60,000 brand-name and generic drugs, with a nationwide average savings of 60%. Without having to fill out enrollment paperwork, the same card provides discounts for important health services such as: • vision • dental, • hearing services, • diabetes supplies • imaging services and even some pet prescriptions and Veterinary care.

Not only is the Coast2Coast RX card endorsed by numerous organizations around the country, but for each prescription filled using the card, a contribution is given to our United Way to help address identified health related community issues, setting this prescription discount plan apart from all the rest - (and this in no way impacts or increases the prescription costs for cardholders). More than $4.7 million has been saved to date in Santa Barbara County.

Our Product Philanthropy initiative helps companies efficiently donate slow-moving, obsolete and seasonal inventory to charitable organizations. These products are new and include nonperishable items such as mattresses, clothing, books, toys, personal care products, office and school supplies, computers and much more. Each year we redistribute more than $1.2 million in products through a partner network of more than 50 nonprofit and for-profit organizations.
