Fishing & Boating

Maiden, Waubee and Archibald Lakes offer great musky and walleye opportunities. Prefer pan fish? The Townsend Flowage and Chute Pond are known for catching limits of crappie, bluegills and perch. No boat? No problem! Road crossings provide access to a number of rivers and streams, where a great catch is still possible.

Trout fishing your passion? Anglers that prefer stream fishing will find 132 miles of prime trout streams, 80% of which are strictly rated Class 1. Exceptional waters include the Thunder River forks, and the 1st and 2nd South Branches of the Oconto River. You can hook into a trophy size brookie or brown wading these waters! Along the bank of the South Branch is a barrier free fishing trail. One of the few trails of its kind in the county, it is a Âź mile trail that parallels the river and provides access to 11 fishing sites, ranging from flat spots along the shoreline to cantilever decks that allow the angler to be out over the stream.

FISHING AND BOATING

An effort to make sport-fishing in the Northwood’s better, continues at the Lakewood Trout Rearing Station in Northern Oconto County. In 2018, 25,000 trout were delivered to the Rearing Station, including 18,000 brown trout and 7,000 brook trout. This facility is completely ran by volunteers from the Lakewood area from as young as eight years old. The volunteers are there twice a day, for about half an hour to 45 minutes in the morning, and then they send another crew back in the evening to do some of the work. Cleaning of the tanks take place on Mondays and Fridays and that’s a 45 minute job. This is the fourth year of the hatchery being back open, and in that time nearly 100,000 trout have been planted in area waters. Our local fishermen have reported just phenomenal results.

• Annual trail passes may be purchased online or over the counter at select authorized sales locations or by calling WDNR at 1-888WDNRINFO (1-888-936-7463). Annual trail passes expire March 31st.

• A temporary operating receipt (printed on plain white paper) will be issued upon purchase of an annual trail pass and allows the nonresident to operate immediately. The physical trail pass decal will arrive in the mail in approximately 2 weeks or less.

NON-RESIDENT TRAIL PASS OPTIONS

All ATV/UTV operators and passenger under the age of 18 are required to wear a minimum DOT standard ATV or motorcycle helmet. Bicycle helmets do not meet this requirement.

We need your help! Each year the majority of all ATV/UTV deaths in Wisconsin involve operators that were not wearing a helmet. Many of these victims may have survived their injuries had they only been wearing a helmet. Please set a good example for children and others by always wearing a helmet whether you’re legally required to or not.

Trail Pass ($35 fee) In addition, an out of state registered snowmobile must display a Wisconsin Non-resident Snowmobile Trail Pass anytime it is ridden on the trails. Non-resident Snowmobile Trail Passes are available from many agent locations throughout the state, DNR Service Centers when open for counter service, or by calling 1-888-936-7463. For a list of agents where snowmobile trail passes are sold, and for a list of Service Centers and the hours of operation, please visit dnr.wi.gov. The Non-resident Snowmobile Trail Pass is valid for one year and must be displayed directly on the front of the snowmobile windshield. Once attached, it cannot be transferred to any other snowmobile.

Non-residents As a non-resident, you may operate your snowmobile in Wisconsin with your state’s current registration as long as the decal or proof of registration is prominently displayed and the snowmobile and the machine has not been in Wisconsin for more than 15 consecutive days. The proof of registration from your home state must be carried with you while riding and must be presented to an enforcement officer when requested. However, you should be aware that an out of state registered snowmobile that is in Wisconsin for longer than 15 days must be registered in Wisconsin.

RID E

The Oconto County Snowmobile trail system consists of over 400 miles of trails maintained by 8 snowmobile clubs across the county. These clubs spend an estimated 10,000 volunteer hours each year preparing, brushing, and grooming the trails. Riding experiences vary from open farmland in the south to heavily forested land in the north. Corridors 5 & 7 are the primary north south trails that bisect the county while Corridor 18 goes east and west. These corridors connect with the many other trails that spread out across the county and connect with all adjoining counties. Corridor 7 connects directly with the Michigan trail system. Depending on snow conditions trails open in December and the season can last thru the end of March. A Wisconsin trail pass is required in addition to valid registration. Trail maps are available at many local businesses all along the trail system.

FALL COLORS

Fall Colors

Fall is a great time of year to visit Oconto County because it’s one of the best places to see fall foliage. Every autumn, nature paints the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with gorgeous hues of gold, red and orange. Here is a list of the top 4 places to view fall colors in Oconto County! Spend a leisurely fall afternoon on a self-guided ATV ride through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Don’t have an ATV? Rent one from Northern Power Sports to go on your fall colorseeking adventure. Climb all 132 steps to the top of the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower. The tower is one of the best places in Oconto County to view the Fall colors. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower is one of 20 structures, originally built in the Oconto County region of the National Forest, and is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Hike up the newly developed trail to Butler Rock, in the Town of Brazeau, to reach the county’s highest point. This two mile sand trek is not for the faint-hearted, but the views are spectacular. Hike up to the Chute Pond Overlook area! A short, moderately steep trail (2/3 miles) leads to the top of a rock outcrop that features five vistas. Three of the vistas overlook Chute Pond, one looks over a Forest Service tree plantation, and one looks north along State Highway 32 with Bagley Rapids on the west and Green Lake on the east.

HISTORY

History

There have been inhabitants living near the mouth of the Oconto River for many thousands of years. Evidence of the first known residents, the Old Copper Complex Culture, was rediscovered and excavated in 1952 just west of Oconto. They were active in the area from about 4000 BCE to 1000 BCE. After that group disappeared the Menominee Tribe became prominent in this area more than 1000 years ago. In 1669 Father Claude Allouez founded the first mission in northeastern Wisconsin at the present-day city of Oconto and named it St. Francis Xavier

Mission. An estimated 600 Native Americans lived in the nearby village of “Oak-a-toe” now Oconto. In 1787 Oconto was part of the Northwest Territories of the new United States of America. The lumbering era began in 1827 with the Arndt mill in Pensaukee. David Jones built the first successful mill in Oconto in 1844 at what is now known as Susie’s Hill. The first permanent family to settle in Oconto was the Thomas Lindsey family who built an “over-night place” near the mouth of the Oconto River.

Wisconsin became a state in 1848 and the following year Peter Pecor came from New England and married Angelique Courchaine. Together they founded “Frenchtown”, now a part of the city of Oconto. Oconto County was formed in 1851 from the northern part of Brown County becoming the largest county in the state at the time with 5000 square miles. The first elections were held at David Jones house, 1345 Main Street, which is still standing. George Beyer arrived as a child with his family in 1852. By 1859 Oconto had the required 150 citizens to be incorporated as a village. It only took ten years for the community to pass the 1000 citizen mark to incorporate as the City of Oconto on March 11, 1869. By 1880 the population had passed 4000, and remained between 4500 and 5000 for the next 100 years with the highest population in 1910 at 5600. The lumber industry that started in 1827 dominated the economy until the Holt Lumber Company closed its doors in 1938. By then the Bond Pickle Company, founded in 1915, was in full operation as the largest pickle processing plant in the US. It continued until its closing in

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Health & Wellness

Should you go to the emergency room or urgent care? Injury or illness can occur, and when they do, you may be uncertain about where to go for care, especially if symptoms are severe or painful and your primary doctor’s medical office is closed. Knowing the difference between urgent care, emergency care, calling 911 and where to seek treatment could prove lifesaving in a medical emergency.

The difference between urgent care and the emergency room There are distinct differences between a hospital emergency room and urgent care in the level of care provided. Urgent care is appropriate when you become sick or have a minor injury and your primary care provider is not available or you cannot wait for an appointment. Emergency care is appropriate for medical conditions that need rapid or advanced treatments only available in a hospital setting.

52

www.ocontocounty.org

Getting the right care, at the right time, at the lowest cost

Your primary care specialist offers appointments during business hours , and specializes in treating ailments like the cold or flu, provides annual physical exams and vaccinations to keep you healthy and manage your overall wellness, as well as diagnose and manage chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes or high blood pressure. Your out-of-pocket costs are lower than an emergency room visit, and you will have the shortest in-office wait time because your appointment is scheduled ahead of time.

Urgent care offers appointments beyond business hours, weekends and holidays. It is appropriate to visit an urgent care if your illness or injury is not lifethreatening. Your out-of-pocket costs are lower than an emergency room visit. Your wait time at urgent care will vary, depending on the number of people who have arrived before you for treatment. Prevea Urgent Care offers a unique feature called Save My Spot. This feature allows you to choose your appointment time and “reserve” your spot. You can save your spot from any web-enabled device by visiting prevea.com/urgentcare. You will receive a reminder text message when it’s time for you to leave for your urgent care reservation. Once you arrive, all you need to do is check in.

Hospital emergency rooms are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An emergency room visit has a higher cost than primary care or urgent care visits due to the level of care provided. Out-of-pocket costs will vary based on each insurance plan. Medical emergencies are those that require rapid or advanced treatments only available in a hospital. Symptoms that are best evaluated in an emergency room include, but are not limited to: any severe or life-threatening conditions, abdominal pain, acute changes in vision, chest pain, confusion or disorientation, coughing blood, loss of consciousness, overdoses, seizures, severe allergic reactions, severe burns, shortness of breath, stroke, trauma or uncontrolled bleeding. If your personal instinct or intuition tells you it’s serious, don’t hesitate—go to the nearest emergency room.

Be prepared

The emergency department at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls strives to have all patients seen by a medical provider within five minutes of registering. Of course, life-threatening conditions are immediately attended to.

There are also many digital device apps available to assist you in tracking medications. In fact, Prevea patients have access to MyPrevea, a mobile web app that provides access to refill and track prescriptions, view lab and test results, message your health care provider, request or schedule an appointment with certain providers and view urgent care wait times.

When to call 911

Whether you are going to chedule an appointment or going to urgent care or the ER, it’s a good idea to bring a list of your medications, including over-the-counter, vitamins and supplements. The list should include how much of each medication you take and how often you take it.

Guide to care and medication record Prevea and HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital have provided you with a free downloadable guide to care and medication record at www.prevea.com/ urgentcare.

Even if it’s clear you or a loved one needs emergency care, you may be unsure of when to call 911. A medical emergency is an event that threatens a life—when immediate medical care is needed to prevent death or serious impairment of health. For certain medical emergencies, such as heart attack or stroke, calling 911 for an ambulance is the right decision because EMTs and paramedics can deliver life-saving treatment on the way to the hospital. If you are uncertain, err on the side of caution and call 911. The trained dispatcher will advise you.

Welcome to the City of Gillett! A Community of Recreation and Relaxation Gillett, Wisconsin is a community that connects you to hundreds of acres of state, county and national forests and a host of rivers, streams and lakes. The Nicolet State Trail is a recognized state corridor recreation trail that runs through the center of the city and is widely used by hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, snowmobiles, and of course, ATV enthusiasts. Gillett is the ATV Capital of the World. Unload your ATV/UTV at Zippel Park for immediate access to over 450 miles of trails. Stay in Gillett at the Nicolet Trail Campground, a 20-site campground immediately adjacent to the trail. Each site has water, electric, picnic table and fire pit. Spend the weekend riding the trails, and enjoying a campfire under the stars. Visit our local restaurants, grocery store, convenience store, unique shops and retail stores. Tour the Gillett Area Historical Society Museum, located at 110 West Main Street. This 1908 Victorian home, with its three story turret is a font of local history. Gillett is an active community with events that take place year-round. The Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce has taken on a huge project over the last several years. This project involves the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Oconto River from Bond Park to Holtwood Park in Oconto. The bridge has been thought of since 1975 and no City tax payer dollars will be used. Pledges and grants are being sought. If you wish to contribute to this project, pledge forms can be found at www.ocontoareachamber.com.
