Rustic Roads

We invite you to explore the Rustic Roads - whether by car, bicycle, motorcycle or foot. These lightly traveled country roads provide a serene, peaceful experience, no matter what the season.

Rustic Road 109 Location: Northeast Wisconsin, Oconto County. North Park Avenue Road, beginning at County S in the city of Oconto and ending at Maple School Grove Road in the town of Little River. Length: 2.3 miles R-109 is referred to by some local residents as “Wisconsin’s Everglades” because the road runs through a large complex of coastal wetlands that ultimately connect to the Oconto Marsh. Along some parts of the route, travelers will see majestic cattails that line both sides of the road, as well as blue flag iris, swamp milkweed, marsh fern and lowland grasses. In the middle of the route, the trees lining the road form a graceful canopy that arches over the road. R-109 also has a century farmstead visible from the road.

Fall Adventures Butler Rock

Hike up the recently developed trail to Butler Rock, in the Town of Brazeau, to reach the county’s highest point. This two mile trek is not for the fainthearted, but the views are spectacular.

Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

Climb high above Oconto County — 100 feet up, to be exact. Built-in 1935 by the U.S. Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Mountain Fire Lookout was once part of an extensive lookout tower network; today, it’s on the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Open daily from 8 am to sunset, May 1-October 31; you can climb the 132 steps up to a seven-by-seven-foot cab. You’ll be rewarded by sweeping 360-degree views of the forest — especially glorious during fall foliage season.

Quartz Hill

FALL ADVENTURES

One of Oconto County’s best hikes! This stunning trail cascades into two sections off of Wisconsin State Highway 32 — one on the east and the west side. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It can get steep at times, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is more than worth the climb. The prettiest time to explore the trail is in fall, when brilliant foliage creates a natural fireworks display.

Hagar Mountain

The payoff for your hike up Hagar Mountain is a dazzling waterfall, one of the area’s most scenic spots. But Hagar has plenty more to offer, including a riot of colorful wildflowers in the spring and several rock outcrops that offer amazing views of the surrounding forestland. Take note: there are no maintained trails here, so be ready to blaze your own trail.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest Christmas Tree Permits 715-674-4481 Many people enjoy the experience of hiking in the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree. While the trees in the forest are not professionally trimmed or groomed, many enjoy them for their natural appearance. The most popular tree species is balsam fir, which is plentiful and retains needles very well. Balsam firs are not as abundant in the Washburn District, and, as a result, red and scotch pines are preferred. Permits are issued from late fall to the end of December. Cost: $5.00 per tree (limit of 5 trees per person). A transportation tag will be issued for each tree, which must be attached to the tree prior to loading and hauling. 7230 S Chase Road, Sobieski 920-822-3102 Cut your own or pre-cut Christmas trees. CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, managing lands for multiple uses including forestry, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, fisheries management, special forest products gathering, wilderness and natural areas management. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida and Vilas counties.

Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

Start the 132-step journey to the top! The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was built in 1935 by the U.S. Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was once a part of an extensive lookout tower network in the former Nicolet National Forest. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was the first tower in Wisconsin to be placed on the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was restored in 2015-2016 through a partnership between the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with financial assistance from the Oconto County Economic Development Corporation, numerous local businesses, organizations, communities and residents. Employees from the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District spent more than 400 hours doing the restoration work. Today, the 100-foot steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab is one of the few remaining lookouts on the east side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Cathedral Pines

Cathedral Pines is a 40-acre grove of white pine, hemlock and red pine that escaped cutting by lumberjacks in the 1900s. Located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s Lakewood-Laona Ranger District, this dynamic and exceptionally scenic old-growth forest is one of the few remaining stands of towering pine and hemlock in Wisconsin. Directions: Take State Highway 32 on the north end of the Town of Lakewood, turn southwest onto Archibald Lake Road (Forest Road 2121). Drive 1.4 miles on FR 2121, then look for the “Watchable Wildlife” sign and turn right (northwest) onto Cathedral Drive (FR 3299). Drive 0.4 mile on this gravel road to the parking lot. After your visit, continue driving northwest on Cathedral Drive, then take a right onto paved Presbyterian Road (FR 3304) and you’ll quickly come to County Highway T near Townsend.

Quartz Hill

This trail has two sections, one located on the east and one on the west side of State Highway 32. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. Along the trail to the top, you will pass a quartz crystal deposit with an informational sign that describes how early Native Americans came here to quarry quartz to create their tools. The west portion of this trail leads to the site of the Carter Fire Lookout Tower. Once used to spot forest fires, all that now remains are the tower footings and roadway. Most fire towers on the Nicolet were erected in the 1930s and have since been discontinued as aerial surveillance took over. The trail is open 24 hours/365 days.

The tower is open daily 8am-sunset from May 1st to October 31st, weather depending. Directions: From Mountain, take Hwy 32 North, turn right onto Sparky’s Lane, then left on Old 32 Road, 2 ½ miles to entrance sign on the right-hand side of the road.

14

www.ocontocounty.org

Directions: From Carter, take State Highway 32 south 1 mile. The parking area is on the west side of the highway. A sign with trail map is at the trailhead. To get to the east portion of the trail from the parking lot, you must cross over State Highway 32. Be cautious for high-speed traffic. Trail Length: The trail section to the east to McCaslin Mountain is 6/10 mile. The section to the west to Carter Tower site is 3/4 mile.

The natural area itself is quite aesthetic with numerous rock outcrops affording scenic views and having one of the few waterfalls on the Nicolet. Hagar Mountain is owned by the USDA Forest Service and was designated a State Natural Area in 1996. Directions: From the intersection of State Highway 32 and County Highway W in Mountain, go east on W 3 miles to the junction with FR 2630 (Bear Paw Rd). Continue on W 0.5 mile to a cabin at Fire #13124. Park along W. To reach Hagar Mountain, go north on a foot trail that runs along the property line from the east side of the cabin. Please do not trespass on private land.

Accessible Fishing Trail This site reopened in 2021 in the Town of Doty. For those anglers that prefer stream fishing, we have the South Branch Oconto Barrier-Free Fishing Trail, one of few trails of its kind across the country. This 1/4-mile fishing trail parallels the South Branch of the Oconto River in the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District, which is a quality brook and brown trout stream. The trail provides access to 11 fishing sites, ranging from flat spots along the shoreline to cantilever decks that allow users to be out over the stream. The trail is a cooperative effort of the Forest and nine partner organizations.

A longtime tradition in Wisconsin, the Friday Night Fish Fry kicks off the weekend all over the state with friends, family — and plenty of fish, of course. Fresh walleye is one of the most beloved Friday Night Fish Fry dishes. When the fish is dipped in a light beer batter and deep‐fried to a golden crispness, it’s just about perfect.

Fishing & Boating

In Oconto County, however, many aren’t satisfied with simply tasting walleye. They want to catch a few themselves. And they’re in luck: Oconto County offers some of the finest walleye fishing on the Bay of Green Bay (not to mention on several of the County’s 378 lakes). Here, experienced outfitters and guides offer everything from simple boat or fishing-kayak rentals to multi-day guided excursions out on the waters of Lake Michigan. If you’re looking to land a few walleyes in Wisconsin, Oconto County is one of your very best options.

Walleye

Walleye Fishing in Oconto County FAQ

Fishing

When Is Walleye Season? Walleye fishing usually kicks off on the Bay of Green Bay tributaries in late March or early April, depending on weather. In June and July, schools of walleye make their way to mid-lake flats and reefs. From August through November, anglers head to the north part of the Bay to catch trophy walleyes in the 25-33-inch range.

in Oconto County

Why is Oconto County Such A Walleye Hotspot? Like clockwork, every spring when the ice clears, walleye migrate to the numerous rivers that feed into the Bay of Green Bay. The Bay has a thriving baitfish population for walleye to chow down on, as well as a lot of offshore structure. It’s a combo that makes the walleyes grow quickly and often to very large sizes. Where Are the Best Spots? In addition to the Bay itself, there are a number of rivers and tributaries in Oconto County that deliver phenomenal walleye runs. Machickanee Flowage near Oconto Falls is a fisherman’s dream come true, offering walleye, northern pike, bass and panfish, in addition to trout and salmon. Same goes for the Oconto River. These various river systems provide an opportunity to fish all spring and even provide opportunities for shore fishing, but if you want a chance at your personal best, the Bay of Green Bay is the place to go. Big water = big fish.

Over 500 miles of fully interconnected riding opportunities. Oconto County is bisected from south to north by the Nicolet State Recreational Trail (NSRT) that serves as the “main highway” for access to the various types of riding available. In northern Oconto County, most of the land off Hwy 32 is part of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. There are many miles of interconnected trails and unpaved scenic forest roads to explore. Townsend, Lakewood, and Mountain are on the NSRT and provide unloading areas and services, including gas and food. South and east of Mountain is “sand country.” Much of the riding here is on county forest land. There is an unloading ramp, parking, and restroom located at locator number 465. You could spend all day riding the scenic loops in this area.

• •

Further south of Hwy 32, the NSRT goes through more open farm country, passing Suring and Gillett, where ATV/UTV parking areas and services are available. The NSRT ends south of Gillett, but many road routes are to ride further south to Green Valley and beyond. Our county map highlights several “preferred road routes” in blue connected to the NSRT. Using these routes makes riding to most other parts of the county easy. A QR code on the map lists the various riding opportunities and restrictions by the municipality. · Riding maps are free of charge by requesting them online at www.ocontocounty.org and at the many gas and food stops along the NSRT. · All six local ATV clubs in the county have ads on the map and will be glad to help visitors new to the areas they represent. www.ocontocounty.org

The Oconto County snowmobile trail system consists of over 480 miles of trails maintained by 8 snowmobile clubs across the county. These clubs spend an estimated 10,000 volunteer hours each year preparing, brushing, and grooming the trails. Riding experiences vary from open farmland in the south to heavily forested land in the north. Corridors 5 & 7 are the primary north south trails that bisect the county, while Corridor 18 goes east and west. These corridors connect with the many other trails that spread out across the county and connect with all adjoining counties. Corridor 7 connects directly with the Michigan trail system. Depending on snow conditions, trails open in December and the season can last thru the end of March. A Wisconsin trail pass is required in addition to valid registration. Trail maps are available at many local businesses all along the trail system.

Groomer Etiquette When you approach a groomer, either from behind or straight-on, employ the same level of respect we encourage when you approach other groups of snowmobiles. These trail workers help make your ride a more pleasant one, and for their efforts they more than deserve the right of way. If you are approaching a groomer head-on, pull over to the side, stop and allow the groomer to pass. If you are stuck behind a groomer, allow them to acknowledge your presence and pull over so you can safely pass. Pass slowly, be aware of your surroundings and only pass when you have plenty of room and a clear line of sight.

Ride only where permitted. Don’t cut corners, and stay within the trail markers. Be courteous to other riders and hikers on the trail. Ride on the right side of the trail. When riding downhill, yield to uphill traffic. Uphill traffic may have difficulty starting again after stopping. When you see others coming towards you, slow down and proceed with caution. If you meet skiers, horses, or hikers on snowshoes coming from the opposite direction, slow down, pull over, and yield the right-of-way. Be safe and considerate when you stop along the trail. Never stop side-by-side, in the middle of the trail, at the crest of a hill, or around a corner on the trail. Also, never block an intersection. Remember to shut off your engine. Leave gates as you find them. Report downed trees and trail maintenance needs to land managers or snowmobile clubs. Email tourism@ocontocounty.org. Carry out what you carry in.

Doty TOWN OF

Centennial Celebration

Today the 260 residents enjoy the seclusion of the north woods and the many outdoor activities that are available in the forest. Join us in celebrating our first century and learning about our history!

HISTORY

In 1922, S.W. Doty and about 40 others signed a petition and split 54 square miles of recently logged land from the town of Armstrong to form the town of Doty. These loggers turned farmers and ranchers sought out a living, hindered by the dry fire prone years of the late 1920’s and the great depression. As these early settlers pursued other interests, the federal government stepped in and bought thousands of acres to form the Nicolet National Forest in the early thirties. The few remaining farmers, mainly in the fertile central part of the town had success, and some of those early farms are still held by the same family today. Resorts were started on the many lakes and after prohibition ended (by a vote of 65 – 4 in the town, a nearly 100% turnout) numerous taverns opened. At one point there was one bar for every 30 residents. The town grew in population and thrived through many disasters and events, including tornados, forest fires, a plane crash, a presidential phone call and even the ‘Oconto Fantom’.

Events held throughout the year

• Self-guided history tour (ongoing) • Birthday Party March 8th (after town board meeting) • Centennial Forest Dedication (spring 2022) • “Ice Cream and Cake” History Seminars 6pm – 7pm Second Monday of March, April, May & June. BLOODY MARYS

Bloody Mary. Love it or hate it, the Bloody Mary is usually a show-stopper of a drink, with adornments ranging from six-inch celery stalks to a full hamburger. Part of the fun when ordering a Bloody Mary is that everyone has their own special recipe or variation. Don’t drink? Bloody Marys are one of the easiest and best drinks to turn into a mocktail by simply omitting the alcohol.

Dockside Original Bloody Mary In-house made mix, robust and flavorful, garnished with pickle spear, garlic green beans, pretzels, olives, mushrooms and brussel sprouts. Use original, cucumber, citron or peppar vodka. Make it loaded with extra smoked meat and cheese!

Pam's Famous Bloody Mary at Mulligans Topped with a pickle, egg, celery, mushroom, olives, brussel sprouts, garlic toast, mozzarella stick, sausage stick, asparagus, green bean, lemon, pretzel, tomato, onion, and a cucumber slice to finish it off!

Sandtrap Bar & Grill With the perfect amount of spice paired with the freshness of tomato juice, a kick from your alcohol of choice, and seasonings that blend in layers of flavor with every sip. The tower of garnishes won’t be needed for this Bloody Marys savory quality.

Wendt’s Sandbar Resort Enjoy a delicious Bloody Mary on the deck while overlooking the lake! This classic brunch cocktail is the start to any perfect Sunday in the Northwoods. Topped with the most popular garnishes and a chaser of your choice.

Wooden Shoe Bar & Grill Our homemade mix that won us Best Bloody Mary in Wisconsin! Hint of pickle juice, horseradish, lemon zest, but we can't tell the rest, it's our secret. Specialty bloodies include the original, garlic, horseradish, dill, bacon and loaded.

Health and Wellness

Our Community, Our Health: How Bellin is Focusing on What Matters

Our communities are wonderful places to live, learn, work, play and grow. Still, we know there are health and wellbeing challenges we continue to face – and making a difference takes an informed, dedicated approach.

• Improving access to care for patients and community, including an emphasis on early intervention services (regular screenings, patient and community education and referral to community resources, among others)

Enter the Community Health Needs Assessment, an appraisal that carefully considers community needs and challenges and identifies systematic, workable solutions — solutions that are built to last. This year’s assessment has three areas of focus. We are pleased to share an outline of this plan as we work together for a healthier, happier tomorrow.

• Improving opportunities for social cohesion or connectedness, including opportunities for physical activity that incorporate and emphasize social connectedness

1. Mental Health

3. Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse (AODA)

Mental health and wellbeing consistently arose as the most prominent community health priority in Oconto County during Community Health Needs Assessment discussions. Access to these services for patients and community alike is paramount — here is just some of what we’re working on.

Unfortunately, the reported incidence of binge drinking is significantly higher in Oconto County than the U.S. overall. Nearly 1 in 4 Oconto County adults reports excessive drinking in the last 30 days, and more than a third of county high school students currently drink alcohol. Drug abuse also is a big concern, and is often linked closely to the topic of mental health. Working together, we can make a change. Here’s a look at how we start:

HEALTH & WELLNESS

• Improving patient access to care, which includes working collaboratively between Bellin Health Oconto Hospital and HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital, as well as other community stakeholders, to identify community assets and services

48

• Improving community access to care, which includes the work of dedicated action teams for youth and adult mental health needs. A Gap & Assets evaluation process will serve as the basis for our 2021-23 action plan. • Engaging in unified planning and policy and addressing other social determinants of health, including broadband access for underserved community members 2. Healthy Nutrition & Physical Activity Let’s get moving, Oconto! This area of focus is a huge priority as a full 25 percent of Oconto County adults do not exercise (versus 21 percent statewide), and 30 percent are considered obese. Again, access is an issue — just over half of Oconto County residents have access to exercise facilities, while statewide it’s 80 percent. Here’s a look at how we’re addressing movement and nutrition:

www.ocontocounty.org

Preparing for a hike: · Always check to make sure dogs are welcomed on your route. · Choose a trail that won’t hurt your pup’s paws. Paths layered with leaves or soft needles are good. Avoid trails with sharp rocks that can cut canine feet, and paved surfaces that heat up in the sun. · Carry fresh water and let your dog drink often. Preparing for camping: · Check the campsite rules and regulations pertaining to dogs. · Before you go, ask your vet if your furry friend needs a flea and tick preventative, heartworm medications, or other protection. Brush and check your dog regularly after being outdoors. · Put away your pet’s food and water at night, so you don’t attract unwanted critters.

RECREATION <<<<<

Navigate miles of cross-country ski trails throughout the Machickanee County Forest. Numerous hills and curves of various slopes and lengths make this course a challenge for intermediate to advanced skiers. Catch air at the Oconto Falls Tubing Hill, a nearly 900’ run that will surely exhilarate you and a rope to tow you back to the top. Bring a tube, warm winter clothes, and your desire to have a blast.

<<<<<

Swim or sunbathe at the East or West Side Beaches under the supervision of trained lifeguards during the long hot summer days. The Oconto Falls area offers a wide variety of excellent public recreational opportunities for all seasons. You will find well-maintained parks, playground facilities, and a local golf course. The Machickanee County and Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forests offer easy access to hunting, hiking, and biking.

The community hosts the district’s high school, middle school, several elementary schools, and an alternative education center. OCONTO

The Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce has taken on a huge project over the last several years. This project involves the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Oconto River from Bond Park to Holtwood Park in Oconto. The bridge has been thought of since 1975 and no City tax payer dollars will be used. Pledges and grants are being sought. If you wish to contribute to this project, pledge forms can be found at www.ocontoareachamber.com.
