Rustic Roads
We invite you to explore the Rustic Roads - whether by car, bicycle, motorcycle or foot. These lightly traveled country roads provide a serene, peaceful experience, no matter what the season.
Rustic Road 109 Location: Northeast Wisconsin, Oconto County. North Park Avenue Road, beginning at County S in the city of Oconto and ending at Maple School Grove Road in the town of Little River. Length: 2.3 miles R-109 is referred to by some local residents as “Wisconsin’s Everglades” because the road runs through a large complex of coastal wetlands that ultimately connect to the Oconto Marsh. Along some parts of the route, travelers will see majestic cattails that line both sides of the road, as well as blue flag iris, swamp milkweed, marsh fern and lowland grasses. In the middle of the route, the trees lining the road form a graceful canopy that arches over the road. R-109 also has a century farmstead visible from the road.

Rustic Road 113 Location: Northeast Wisconsin, Oconto County. Old 32 Road, between County W and County F. Length: 9.4 miles Surface: Paved R-113 passes through the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest where beautiful wooded vistas teem with wildlife and birds. A complementary feature is the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower. It was built in 1934 and is the only fire tower still standing in the area. R-113 also provides access to the Nicolet State Trail and cross country ski trails. Credit: Wisconsin Department of Transportation www.ocontocounty.org

Bird Watching The Machickanee Forest is a 3,100-acre unit of the Oconto County Forest. Located just west of Oconto, the forest is bisected by a 2,200-acre bulge in the Oconto River called the Machickanee Flowage. The forest is a site for birders and hikers, while the flowage is popular with anglers, particularly in winter. There are miles of hiking trails that access the property. Bring a canoe or kayak to see the herons, bitterns and numerous species of waterfowl along the river and flowage. In the forests, see Veerys, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Golden-winged Warblers, and Scarlet Tanagers.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest Christmas Tree Permits
715-674-4481 Many people enjoy the experience of hiking in the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree. While the trees in the forest are not professionally trimmed or groomed, many enjoy them for their natural appearance. The most popular tree species is balsam fir, which is plentiful and retains needles very well. Balsam firs are not as abundant in the Washburn District, and, as a result, red and scotch pines are preferred. Permits are issued from late fall to the end of December. Cost: $5.00 per tree (limit of 5 trees per person). A transportation tag will be issued for each tree, which must be attached to the tree prior to loading and hauling.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, managing lands for multiple uses including forestry, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, fisheries management, special forest products gathering, wilderness and natural areas management. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida and Vilas counties.
Mountain Fire Lookout Tower
CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST
Start the 132-step journey to the top! The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was built in 1935 by the U.S. Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was once a part of an extensive lookout tower network in the former Nicolet National Forest. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was the first tower in Wisconsin to be placed on the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
14
The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was restored in 2015-2016 through a partnership between the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with financial assistance from the Oconto County Economic Development Corporation, numerous local businesses, organizations, communities and residents. Employees from the LakewoodLaona Ranger District spent more than 400 hours doing the restoration work.
www.ocontocounty.org
Today, the 100-foot steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab is one of the few remaining lookouts on the east side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The tower is open daily 8am-sunset from May 1st to October 31st, weather depending. Directions: From Mountain, take Hwy 32 North, turn right onto Sparky’s Lane, then left on Old 32 Road, 2 ½ miles to entrance sign on the right-hand side of the road. A gravel road leads to the parking area.
Cathedral Pines
Cathedral Pines is a 40-acre grove of white pine, hemlock and red pine that escaped cutting by lumberjacks in the 1900s. Located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s Lakewood-Laona Ranger District, this dynamic and exceptionally scenic old-growth forest is one of the few remaining stands of towering pine and hemlock in Wisconsin. Directions: Take State Highway 32 on the north end of the Town of Lakewood, turn southwest onto Archibald Lake Road (Forest Road 2121). Drive 1.4 miles on FR 2121, then look for the
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest “Watchable Wildlife” sign and turn right (northwest) onto Cathedral Drive (FR 3299). Drive 0.4 mile on this gravel road to the parking lot. After your visit, continue driving northwest on Cathedral Drive, then take a right onto paved Presbyterian Road (FR 3304) and you’ll quickly come to County Highway T near Townsend.
Hagar Mountain
Quartz Hill
Directions: From the intersection of State Highway 32 and County Highway W in Mountain, go east on W 3 miles to the junction with FR 2630 (Bear Paw Rd). Continue on W 0.5 mile to a cabin at Fire #13124. Park along W. To reach Hagar Mountain, go north on a foot trail that runs along the property line from the east side of the cabin. Please do not trespass on private land.
This trail has two sections, one located on the east and one on the west side of State Highway 32. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. Along the trail to the top, you will pass a quartz crystal deposit with an informational sign that describes how early Native Americans came here to quarry quartz to create their tools. The west portion of this trail leads to the site of the Carter Fire Lookout Tower. Once used to spot forest fires, all that now remains are the tower footings and roadway. Most fire towers on the Nicolet were erected in the 1930s and have since been discontinued as aerial surveillance took over.
The natural area itself is quite aesthetic with numerous rock outcrops affording scenic views and having one of the few waterfalls on the Nicolet. Hagar Mountain is owned by the USDA Forest Service and was designated a State Natural Area in 1996.
The trail is open 24 hours/365 days.
CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST
Directions: From Carter, take State Highway 32 south 1 mile. The parking area is on the west side of the highway. A sign with trail map is at the trailhead. To get to the east portion of the trail from the parking lot, you must cross over State Highway 32. Be cautious for high-speed traffic. Trail Length: The trail section to the east to McCaslin Mountain is 6/10 mile. The section to the west to Carter Tower site is 3/4 mile.

Fishing & Boating
FISHING & BOATING
Oconto is becoming the most popular place to fish walleyes on the Bay of Green Bay and for good reason. Fishermen from all over the country travel here for a chance at a fish of a lifetime. As soon as the ice melts enough in late March or early April to get boats into the water, giant walleyes over 10 lbs are waiting. These big fish are roaming the shorelines looking for some warm water and food to fuel their rigorous journey. They stage outside the Oconto River and area shorelines waiting for the water to warm enough to trigger their annual spawning run. These fish are caught many ways, but lipless rattle baits - like ripping raps, jigs with plastic or minnows, and crank baits - all harvest giants. Until the fishing opener in May, only one walleye over 15 is allowed to be kept. Please help preserve the fishery and let the larger females go. After the spawn is over, walleyes pile out of the rivers and start looking for food. Keying on water temperature and baitfish, these fish move around quite a bit. Patterns change daily with wind and weather, but observant fishermen consistently catch limits of eater-size fish, with larger ones mixed in, all summer long. Oconto is home to many reefs, shoals, rivers, rock humps, sand bars, and shorelines that hold fish all year. Popular techniques that put walleyes in the freezer are trolling crank baits and spinners behind planner boards, casting spoons or reaction type baits like shiver minnows or ripping raps, swim baits and plastic, and even slip bobbers with leeches and minnows. Snowmobile Trails
SNOWMOBILE TRAILS The Oconto County snowmobile trail system consists of over 480 miles of trails maintained by 8 snowmobile clubs across the county. These clubs spend an estimated 10,000 volunteer hours each year preparing, brushing, and grooming the trails. Riding experiences vary from open farmland in the south to heavily forested land in the north. Corridors 5 & 7 are the primary north south trails that bisect the county, while Corridor 18 goes east and west. These corridors connect with the many other trails that spread out across the county and connect with all adjoining counties. Corridor 7 connects directly with the Michigan trail system. Depending on snow conditions, trails open in December and the season can last thru the end of March. A Wisconsin trail pass is required in addition to valid registration. Trail maps are available at many local businesses all along the trail system.

Groomer Etiquette When you approach a groomer, either from behind or straight-on, employ the same level of respect we encourage when you approach other groups of snowmobiles. These trail workers help make your ride a more pleasant one, and for their efforts they more than deserve the right of way. If you are approaching a groomer head-on, pull over to the side, stop and allow the groomer to pass. If you are stuck behind a groomer, allow them to acknowledge your presence and pull over so you can safely pass. Pass slowly, be aware of your surroundings and only pass when you have plenty of room and a clear line of sight.

Ride only where permitted. Don’t cut corners, and stay within the trail markers. Be courteous to other riders and hikers on the trail. Ride on the right side of the trail. When riding downhill, yield to uphill traffic. Uphill traffic may have difficulty starting again after stopping. When you see others coming towards you, slow down and proceed with caution. If you meet skiers, horses, or hikers on snowshoes coming from the opposite direction, slow down, pull over, and yield the right-of-way. Be safe and considerate when you stop along the trail. Never stop side-by-side, in the middle of the trail, at the crest of a hill, or around a corner on the trail. Also, never block an intersection. Remember to shut off your engine. Leave gates as you find them. Report downed trees and trail maintenance needs to land managers or snowmobile clubs. Email tourism@ocontocounty.org. Carry out what you carry in.

History Holt and Balcom Logging Camp By 1850, as Eastern lumbermen flocked to the Wisconsin pinery, the lumber industry became a mainstay of Wisconsin’s economy. This phenomenal logging boom virtually stripped the state of its white pine forest in order to supply Midwestern settlers with the lumber needed to build farms and cities during the last half of the nineteenth century. The Holt-Balcom Lumber Company, owner of about one thousand acres of forest in Oconto and Marinette counties, was one of the many corporations that turned the Northwoods into board feet. The men who logged the forest lived in lumber camps like this one, which originally included not only this log bunk house and kitchen, but also a log blacksmith shop, a wooden horse barn, a warehouse, a truck garden, and spring pasture and hay fields.
HISTORY
The bunkhouse, probably constructed in 1880, is the oldest known logging-camp building in Wisconsin on its original site. The gabled structure consists of two pens divided by a dogtrot or breezeway, twelve feet wide. The larger, eastern pen was the cook house, and the smaller, western pen was the bunkhouse, where visitors can still see the loggers’ double-deck bunks. The men who constructed the building - perhaps Ernest Livingston and Henderson Bateman - used logs of white pine, peeled but left round. To connect the logs, they hewed the ends, making half-dovetail joints. They likely filled the chinks between the logs with slivers of stone or wood, covered with a lime-mortar daub. The McCaslin Lions Club of Townsend-Lakewood restored the building, which is now a museum, surrounded by a golf course. - Wisconsin Historical Society

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Get Ahead of Your Health with Primary Care From Bellin Health
48
It used to be assumed that there was one time you went to the doctor – when you were sick. These days, however, we know better. We know that getting regular check-ups and establishing a relationship with a primary care provider (PCP) is important for your health now and into the future. There are plenty of good reasons why, including: • Better outcomes – and the bottom line. Did you know one-third of patients have lower costs and they are 19 percent less likely to die when they have a relationship with a primary care provider? Those stats alone are reason enough to find yourself a PCP. • Coordinated care. A primary care provider can help patients lead healthier, happier lives by communicating, educating and coordinating care across many settings. • Taking it personally. Primary care providers can deliver personalized care, understanding your needs may not be the same as someone else your age or in a similar stage of life. • Cultivating trust. Developing a trust relationship with a primary care provider can help you feel comfortable discussing difficult or embarrassing medical or mental health issues. The result is a better experience and improved outcomes. • Staying up on screenings. At each visit, your PCP will remind you of screenings you may want to get or consider based on age, lifestyle and other factors. Getting these screenings at the appropriate time could literally save your life. • It’s (usually) free! Most health insurance plans cover annual exams, so there’s no out-of-pocket expense.
www.ocontocounty.org
Getting connected So say you’ve decided to establish a relationship with a primary care provider. Where do you start? Many health systems offer online provider profiles and videos to help you look for the PCP that’s right for you. You can also call your preferred local clinic and inquire about providers who are accepting new patients. Keep in mind your primary care provider doesn’t have to be a doctor. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other providers can also offer terrific primary care.
Making the most of it Once you’ve established a primary care relationship, make the most of it by keeping these tips in mind: • Make and keep regular (usually annual) check-up appointments. It’s your health – you have the time! • Get to know your provider and help him or her get to know you. Be honest about your health, lifestyle and any issues you may be having. Your provider has heard it all before and there’s never any reason to be reticent or embarrassed. • Be your own advocate. Write down any questions you have before your appointment and make sure your provider takes the time to address them. If you don’t understand your PCP’s answer, ask for clarification until you’re sure you’ve got the full picture. A primary care provider can help keep you healthy now and for years to come. Make this important connection today. See ad on back cover or for more information visit bellin.org.

Pet Health Exploring the great outdoors with your fur-friend. Preparing for a hike: · Always check to make sure dogs are welcomed on your route. · Choose a trail that won’t hurt your pup’s paws. Paths layered with leaves or soft needles are good. Avoid trails with sharp rocks that can cut canine feet, and paved surfaces that heat up in the sun. · Carry fresh water and let your dog drink often. Preparing for camping: · Check the campsite rules and regulations pertaining to dogs. · Before you go, ask your vet if your furry friend needs a flea and tick preventative, heartworm medications, or other protection. Brush and check your dog regularly after being outdoors. · Put away your pet’s food and water at night, so you don’t attract unwanted critters.

The Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce has taken on a huge project over the last several years. This project involves the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Oconto River from Bond Park to Holtwood Park in Oconto. The bridge has been thought of since 1975 and no City tax payer dollars will be used. Pledges and grants are being sought. If you wish to contribute to this project, pledge forms can be found at www.ocontoareachamber.com.
