Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest Christmas Tree Permits 715-674-4481 Many people enjoy the experience of hiking in the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree. While the trees in the forest are not professionally trimmed or groomed, many enjoy them for their natural appearance. The most popular tree species is balsam fir, which is plentiful and retains needles very well. Balsam firs are not as abundant in the Washburn District, and, as a result, red and scotch pines are preferred. Permits are issued from late fall to the end of December. Cost: $5.00 per tree (limit of 5 trees per person). A transportation tag will be issued for each tree, which must be attached to the tree prior to loading and hauling.

Haunted Places Port Townsend Resort

The elderly Dr. Fred is the well-known ghostly resident at this 1940s lodge. He once lived on the third floor, but was hit by a car on the road in front of the lodge. He died from his injuries but never left the place. He makes himself known by slamming doors, opening locked windows and moving objects around.

Fall Activities

Gillett Historical Society Museum Built in 1908 by Ruth and John Smith, the historic mansion and museum is rumored to be haunted. Local folks say the ghost is that of Mary Gillett (wife of the town founder), who used to live in a previous residence located on the site of the current structure (the former burnt to the ground after a suspicious fire in early 1908). Ghostly conversation has also been heard emanating from empty rooms.

The Pines on Crooked Lake From the Pines Bar, a curious apparition has been seen at the dock. An old man yells for help from a ghostly old fishing boat out in the middle of Crooked Lake. Shortly thereafter, boat and man are surrounded by mist and vanish from sight. Credit:Â hauntedplaces.org

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, managing lands for multiple uses including forestry, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, fisheries management, special forest products gathering, wilderness and natural areas management. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida and Vilas counties.

Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST

Start the 132-step journey to the top! The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was built in 1935 by the U.S. Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was once a part of an extensive lookout tower network in the former Nicolet National Forest. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was the first tower in Wisconsin to be placed on the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places.

16

The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was restored in 2015-2016 through a partnership between the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with financial assistance from the Oconto County Economic Development Corporation, numerous local businesses, organizations, communities and residents. Employees from the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District spent more than 400 hours doing the restoration work. Today, the 100-foot steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab is one of the few remaining lookouts on the east side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The tower is open daily 8am-sunset from May 1st to October 31st, weather depending. Directions: From Mountain, take Hwy 32 North, turn right onto Sparky’s Lane, then left on Old 32 Road, 2 ½ miles to entrance sign on the right hand side of the road. A gravel road leads to the parking area.

www.ocontocounty.org

Cathedral Pines

Cathedral Pines is a 40-acre grove of white pine, hemlock and red pine that escaped cutting by lumberjacks in the 1900s. Located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s Lakewood-Laona Ranger District, this dynamic and exceptionally scenic old-growth forest is one of the few remaining stands of towering pine and hemlock in Wisconsin. Directions: Take State Highway 32 on the north end of the Town of Lakewood, turn southwest onto Archibald Lake Road (Forest Road 2121). Drive 1.4 miles on FR 2121, then look for the “Watchable Wildlife” sign and turn right (northwest) onto Cathedral Drive (FR 3299). Drive 0.4 miles on this gravel road to the parking lot. After your visit, continue driving northwest on Cathedral Drive, then take a right onto paved Presbyterian Road (FR 3304) and you’ll quickly come to County Highway T near Townsend.

Quartz Hill

This trail has two sections, one located on the east and one on the west side of State Highway 32. The east section leads across a boardwalk to the top of McCaslin Mountain. It has moderately steep sections, but the view from the top of this quartz rock outcrop is worth the climb. Along the trail to the top, you will pass a quartz crystal deposit with an informational sign that describes how early Native Americans came here to quarry quartz to create their tools. The west portion of this trail leads to the site of the Carter Fire Lookout Tower. Once used to spot forest fires, all that now remains are the tower footings and roadway. Most fire towers on the Nicolet were erected in the 1930s and have since been discontinued as aerial surveillance took over. The trail is open 24 hours/365 days. Directions: From Carter, take State Highway 32 south 1 mile. The parking area is on the west side of the highway. A sign with trail map is at the trailhead. To get to the east portion of the trail from the parking lot, you must cross over State Highway 32. Be cautious for high-speed traffic. Trail Length: The trail section to the east to McCaslin Mountain is 6/10 mile. The section to the west to Carter Tower site is 3/4 mile.

Fishing & Boating Oconto is becoming the most popular place to fish walleyes on the Bay of Green Bay and for good reason. Fishermen from all over the country travel here for a chance at a fish of a lifetime. As soon as the ice melts enough in late March or early April to get boats into the water, giant walleyes over 10 lbs are waiting. These big fish are roaming the shorelines looking for some warm water and food to fuel their rigorous journey. They stage outside the Oconto River and area shorelines waiting for the water to warm enough to trigger their annual spawning run. These fish are caught many ways, but lipless rattle baits, like ripping raps, jigs with plastic or minnows, and crank baits all harvest giants. Until the fishing opener in May, only one walleye over 15 is allowed to be kept. Please help preserve the fishery and let the larger females go.

www.ocontocounty.org

FISHING & BOATING

After the spawn is over, walleyes pile out of the rivers and start looking for food. Keying on water temperature and baitfish, these fish move around quite a bit. Patterns change daily with wind and weather, but observant fishermen consistently catch limits of eater-size fish, with larger ones mixed in, all summer long. Oconto is home to many reefs, shoals, rivers, rock humps, sand bars, and shorelines that hold fish all year. Popular techniques that put walleyes in the freezer are trolling crank baits and spinners behind planner boards, casting spoons or reaction type baits like shiver minnows or ripping raps, swim baits and plastic, and even slip bobbers with leeches and minnows. The Oconto County snowmobile trail system consists of over 480 miles of trails maintained by 8 snowmobile clubs across the county. These clubs spend an estimated 10,000 volunteer hours each year preparing, brushing, and grooming the trails. Riding experiences vary from open farmland in the south to heavily forested land in the north. Corridors 5 & 7 are the primary north south trails that bisect the county, while Corridor 18 goes east and west. These corridors connect with the many other trails that spread out across the county and connect with all adjoining counties. Corridor 7 connects directly with the Michigan trail system. Depending on snow conditions, trails open in December and the season can last thru the end of March. A Wisconsin trail pass is required in addition to valid registration. Trail maps are available at many local businesses all along the trail system.

History Copper Culture State Park National Register of Historic Places, 1962

The Copper Culture People

HISTORY

The Old Copper Culture people were early inhabitants of Wisconsin in an area that is the ancestral home of the Menominees. The name “Old Copper Culture is derived from the fact that these people made a variety of bracelets, spear points, fishing hooks, knives, and other ornaments and tools out of copper. They worked the copper by alternating hot and cold hammering, called annealing. They are among the earliest known metalsmiths in the world, and the first in North America. Copper tooling in various fashions has been known around the world for 10,000 years, but this is the first instance of its use in this country. The copper was mined in the Lake Superior region during the warmer months and transported south to a tooling or village site. One copper tooling site has recently been uncovered in Cahokia.

32

www.ocontocounty.org

These people lived in the Middle Archaic period. Carbon 14 tests conducted at the University of Chicago in 1953 placed these people here as far back as 7,510 years ago, between 5500 and 5600 BC, which predates the ancient Egyptian pyramids. During this period, sustenance was gained by hunting, fishing and collecting wild foods. Pottery making, mound building and agriculture of the later Woodland period were unknown to the copper industry people in Oconto. They buried their dead here using the natural elevation of the land during a high water period. Potential trade items found include a portion of a lightning shell (a type of whelk found on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts), and Mississippi River shell. Â Copper, as well as bone (including a swan bone whistle), and other artifacts were also found in the graves. This is the oldest known burial site in Wisconsin and one of the oldest in eastern North America. Copper artifacts found at distant locations indicate the possibility that Archaic people, too, had a trade network as far-reaching as the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.

Discovered by 13-year-old Donald Baldwin in 1952, the site was excavated by archeologists from the Milwaukee Public Museum and the Wisconsin Historical Society, aided by the Oconto County Historical Society’s founder George E. (Jimmy) Hall and Senator Reuben LaFave. This Archaic burial cemetery is one of only four of its kind known today. Twenty-two burial pits were uncovered, although as many as two hundred burials may have occurred here. The majority are believed to have been destroyed by gravel quarrying in the 1920s, but, had it not been for quarrying, the site might not have been discovered at all.

Charles Werrebroeck Home Charles and Emma Werrebroeck and their infant daughter, Anna, immigrated to the United States from Belgium in 1911. Charles, a mason by trade, built the brick Werrebroeck home in 1924. Molds were used to form basement blocks over which he built a traditional brick Belgian farmhouse. His first house here was wood, which was destroyed by fire.

His property originally had outbuildings, several barns, and a wood shed. A porch attached to the front of the house helped insulate against the harsh Wisconsin winters.  The home did not have plumbing or central heating; the Werrebroeck’s heat was provided by two stoves—the cooking stove in the kitchen and a pot-bellied stove in the house’s other main room. Water was supplied year round by an outdoor pump located at the south side of the house. This house now serves as the Copper Culture State Park Museum, where exhibits and information are continually updated.

Oconto Archaic Copper Museum The Werrebroeck House and museum present photos and artifacts of the 1952 archeological dig. A short video shows the archeologists at work on the site. A mock excavation pit allows children to experience a dig. More recent artifacts of Native American culture are also on display. A tour guide is available to give an in-depth tour if desired. A foot trail leads from the parking area to a stone monument at location of burial ground.

Dining The Wooden Shoe Bar & Grill is located at 100 W Main St. in Lena, WI. It is a quaint little bar located on the main corner in the town and offers outstanding food, beverage and service. You may enter as a stranger, but you will leave as a friend. Always up for a good challenge and creating new menu ideas, The Wooden Shoe Bar & Grill is a two-time winner of Wisconsin’s best bloody mary. They competed in 2014 and again in 2019 and brought home the first-place trophy both times. They have a full bloody mary menu to choose from with different flavored infused vodkas and garnishes. The menu is nothing to joke about –  lots of made from scratch items such as the creamy coleslaw, homemade fries, hand-breaded cod, homemade soups and too many items to mention. The burgers are ground of the highest-quality meat comprised of a brisket, ribeye and short rib blend served on a fresh brioche roll. They also offer pizzas made to order, wraps and other specialty sandwiches.

DINING

Always looking to give the customer more, they have a lot planned for the 2020 year. The menu is going to become even more amazing with their kitchen addition planned in spring. They will be adding numerous new pieces of restaurant equipment which will enable them to begin a catering service, as well as new specials like Sunday broasted chicken and pork chops. Recently they acquired the property directly adjacent to Wooden Shoe, and plan on adding a patio for outdoor dining and entertainment in the summer months. This will be an amazing location to hang out for any festivals or races in town and even Packer tailgate parties. Be sure to stop in and check out this little corner bar in Lena, WI – always expanding and growing and offering new and trendy food and drinks.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Get Ahead of Your Health with Primary Care From Bellin Health

48

It used to be assumed that there was one time you went to the doctor – when you were sick. These days, however, we know better. We know that getting regular check-ups and establishing a relationship with a primary care provider (PCP) is important for your health now and into the future. There are plenty of good reasons why, including: • Better outcomes – and the bottom line. Did you know one-third of patients have lower costs and they are 19 percent less likely to die when they have a relationship with a primary care provider? Those stats alone are reason enough to find yourself a PCP. • Coordinated care. A primary care provider can help patients lead healthier, happier lives by communicating, educating and coordinating care across many settings. • Taking it personally. Primary care providers can deliver personalized care, understanding your needs may not be the same as someone else your age or in a similar stage of life. • Cultivating trust. Developing a trust relationship with a primary care provider can help you feel comfortable discussing difficult or embarrassing medical or mental health issues. The result is a better experience and improved outcomes. • Staying up on screenings. At each visit, your PCP will remind you of screenings you may want to get or consider based on age, lifestyle and other factors. Getting these screenings at the appropriate time could literally save your life. • It’s (usually) free! Most health insurance plans cover annual exams, so there’s no out-of-pocket expense.

www.ocontocounty.org

Getting connected So say you’ve decided to establish a relationship with a primary care provider. Where do you start? Many health systems offer online provider profiles and videos to help you look for the PCP that’s right for you. You can also call your preferred local clinic and inquire about providers who are accepting new patients. Keep in mind your primary care provider doesn’t have to be a doctor. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other providers can also offer terrific primary care.

Making the most of it Once you’ve established a primary care relationship, make the most of it by keeping these tips in mind: • Make and keep regular (usually annual) check-up appointments. It’s your health – you have the time! • Get to know your provider and help him or her get to know you. Be honest about your health, lifestyle and any issues you may be having. Your provider has heard it all before and there’s never any reason to be reticent or embarrassed. • Be your own advocate. Write down any questions you have before your appointment and make sure your provider takes the time to address them. If you don’t understand your PCP’s answer, ask for clarification until you’re sure you’ve got the full picture. A primary care provider can help keep you healthy now and for years to come. Make this important connection today. See ad on inside back cover or for more information visit bellin.org.

Welcome to the City of Gillett!

A Community of Recreation and Relaxation

Gillett, Wisconsin is a community that connects you to hundreds of acres of state, county and national forests and a host of rivers, streams and lakes. The Nicolet State Trail is a recognized state corridor recreation trail that runs through the center of the city and is widely used by hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, snowmobiles, and of course, ATV enthusiasts. Gillett is the ATV Capital of the World. Unload your ATV/UTV at Zippel Park for immediate access to over 450 miles of trails. Stay in Gillett at the Nicolet Trail Campground, a 20-site campground immediately adjacent to the trail. Each site has water, electric, picnic table and fire pit. Spend the weekend riding the trails, and enjoying a campfire under the stars. Gillett is an active community with events that take place year-round. Come and enjoy the Fourth of July Parade, the Oconto County Youth Fair, Horse Show, Annual Corn Roast, and Christmas in the Park, to name a few.
