ATV / UTV
The Oconto County ATV/UTV trail system is over 450 miles of interconnected scenic riding! The Nicolet State Recreational Trail runs thru Gillett, Suring, Mountain, Lakewood and Townsend and serves as the system backbone. The interconnected riding allows ATV and UTV rider’s access to Marinette County to the east and eastern Langlade County to the west. The Nicolet continues north to the Michigan border allowing riders to connect directly to Forest and Florence counties as well as the Upper Michigan trail system. Five ATV/UTV clubs maintain the trails for use from April 28th until November 4th. A valid Wisconsin registration is required when riding for visitors and residents.
Trailhead locations are on Hwy 32 in Lakewood across from the Firelite Lounge and off Hwy 64 in Suring on Robenhorst Lane. In Suring, a parking area with access to the Nicolet State Trail is available next to the Village Hall near State Highway 32. Current maps can be found at many local businesses and trailheads along the trail system or you can request your free copy on-line at www.ocontocounty.org. See map in front cover foldout.

SNOWMOBILE
The Oconto County Snowmobile trail system consists of over 400 miles of trails maintained by 8 snowmobile clubs across the county. These clubs spend an estimated 10,000 volunteer hours each year preparing, brushing, and grooming the trails. Riding experiences vary from open farmland in the south to heavily forested land in the north. Corridors 5 & 7 are the primary north and south trails that bisect the county, while Corridor 18 goes east and west. These corridors connect with the many other trails that spread out across the county and connect with all adjoining counties. Corridor 7 connects directly with the Michigan trail system. Depending on snow conditions trails open in December and the season can last thru the end of March. A Wisconsin trail pass is required in addition to valid registration. Trail maps are available at many local businesses all along the trail system.

Fishing & Boating Oconto County has 196 inland lakes, plus numerous boat landings on the Bay of Green Bay to provide for all of your boating and fishing enjoyment, as well as, our world class trophy Trout Streams. Our inland lakes are abundant with pan fish, bass, and northern pike. And of course, Green Bay’s resurgence as a premier walleye fishery is nationally recognized. What has been overlooked is that Green Bay is also expected to produce the next state record Muskellunge.
FISHING AND BOATING
The northern section of the county is home to the Nicolet - Chequamegon National Forest that has a multitude of public landings on beautiful lakes surrounded by pines and northern hardwoods. The middle, or Oconto River Valley mid-section of the county, also hosts many lakes with public access. We also have excellent ice fishing, as well during the winter.

Cathedral of Pines in Townsend. Follow a quarter-mile trail into a unique ‘cathedral’ of towering pines and hemlock trees. This area survived Wisconsin’s logging era and has been preserved in its natural state. Trees range in age from 200 to 400 years old. During early summer you may observe great blue herons nesting high in the tallest pines. This is one of Wisconsin’s largest heron rookeries. Directions: In Lakewood, turn south from Highway 32 onto Archibald Lake Road (FR 2121). Continue for a little over a mile. Turn right on Cathedral Drive. Look for the sign.

The visitor is able to climb to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. The best time to visit this site is May through October. Directions: From Mountain, take Hwy 32 North, turn right onto Sparky’s Lane, then left on Old 32 Road. 2 ½ miles to entrance sign on the right hand side of the road. HISTORY
History
Written by: David Retzlaff
At the age of 22, Florence Sloup was ready to find a full time job in Oconto. She previously had been performing various household jobs, but with the high demand for industry labor it was time to make the move. The year was 1942, she had applied for work at the largest employer in Oconto County, the Bond Pickle Company, and quickly learned that she got the job. The Bond Pickle Company, established in 1917, had become the largest pickle producing company in the world. The five Bond brothers, Clarence, Edward, Truman, Leon and Arthur, had purchased the old Oconto Pea Cannery in 1921 and with booming sales had quickly grown in size adding on to the building in 1933, again in 1939, and with one final large addition in 1942. With that last addition in 1942 the company had also installed a bright new Bond Pickle Company sign on the southeast corner of the new building making it clearly visible for all to see. The 24-foot sign with a large image of a pickle behind it was illuminated with neon lights making it even more eye catching at night.

Florence had started her employment that year joining the many other women in the plant, starting at an hourly wage of thirty two and one half cents until after six months where she received a five cent raise. Not long after starting she had met a fellow male employee, Marvin Zimmerman, apparently hitting it off pretty well because the following year, 1943, they married. Working at Bonds during that time there was no automation for packing pickles into the jars. The women hand-packed all of them sometimes with factory temperatures reaching a sweltering 100 degrees. This was during WWII where fifty percent of the pickles produced were shipped overseas to support our armed forces, from the European theater to the jungles of New Guinea. It’s also worth noting that even years later the pickles were served in the chow lines in Vietnam.
As the years went on, industry automation had further increased pickle production and more outside pickle tanks were added totaling 870 tanks in the yard, each one holding 1,600 to 2,200 bushels of cucumbers. Florence Zimmerman remained a full time employee throughout her years of employment never being laid off. In 1977, after 35 years of employment at a final wage of $3.95 per hour, she retired from the Bond Pickle Company. The Pickle company continued its operations for another 27 years until sadly closing its doors for good in 2004 followed by the building being razed in 2007. Fortunately, the large 1942 sign was saved and last year donated to the Oconto County Historical Society where it was restored and now the sign proudly hangs on the wall

at the Beyer Home & Carriage Museum. On March 9th the restored sign was officially unveiled in the presence of a small crowd of former Bond Pickle Company employees, one of them being the now 96 year old, Florence Zimmerman, the one who like the sign had started at the company in 1942. She is just one of the many thousands of workers who played a role at the pickle company, making it strong for over eighty years. With the sign now on display along with the gathering of Bond Pickle artifacts and photos, our goal is to set up an exhibit to highlight this industrious example of local history. Thank you to everyone who had worked to save the sign and also those who helped to restore it at the museum. Also, please remember to visit the museum this summer where the neon is shining bright once again!
The museum is in the area’s oldest Belgian farmstead, and is dedicated to the earliest known copper tool markers in the Americas.

Navigate along miles of cross-country ski trails and scenic well-groomed snowmobile trails. Hike or snowshoe in the nearby Machickanee County Forest. The snow season does not mean you have to stay indoors! Oconto Falls can provide a cure for that cabin fever!
Swim or sun bathe at the east or west side beaches under the supervision of trained lifeguards during the long hot summer days. Fishermen can take advantage of the public boat landings and the opportunity to catch a lunker bass, northern or walleye. The flowage and channel of the Oconto River allow swimming, boating, canoeing, fishing, and water-skiing. Plenty of opportunity for fun in the sun and water activities!
OCONTO LAKEWOOD FALLS
The Oconto Falls area offers a wide variety of excellent public recreational opportunities for all seasons. You will find well-maintained parks, playground facilities, and a local golf course. The Machickanee County and Nicolet National Forests offer easy access to hunting, hiking and biking.
Enjoy the Avenue of Lights during the holiday season. The lights cast a beautiful glow throughout the holiday season.
Oconto Falls has an excellent K-12 school district including innovative distance learning programs. The community hosts the district’s high school, middle school, one of several elementary schools and an alternative education center. In addition, there is a private elementary school available to residents. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College also offers courses in Oconto Falls at their Regional Learning Center.
In spring the Memorial Day festival offers a classic car show, carnival rides, softball and horseshoe tournaments and fun for the entire family. The Falls Area Performing Arts Center (PAC) has enriched the lives of the people of Oconto Falls by making the arts a vital part of our community. The 764-seat facility provides an appropriate setting for music, drama, and the visual arts. It also serves as an outstanding venue for visiting performers and a Fine Arts Series. The Falls Area Performing Arts center is committed to making the arts accessible and affordable to all.
In addition to providing economically priced land within the community’s business park, Oconto Falls pursues opportunities for new businesses to become a part of the community. The Community Development Authority and the city’s business revolving loan fund are available to assist prospective businesses.
Oconto Falls is a community rich in resources. Whether you visit briefly or settle here for a lifetime, you will appreciate the resources early settlers discovered over 150 years ago.
