METHOD

Our method begins making a serial of basic concepts extracted from the references and the thesis that we use as an engine for generating squares. Combinating these concepts we create the proposals of our places.

Our working system is based on multiple layers. We always start with the same base layer composed by plants, elevations and axonometric views, conical or parallel. The overlap between the different layers of information and the base layer, generates the different proposals.

PROPOSALS

The square proposal is closely linked to the context that surrounds Stortorget. The surface is slightly raised with respect to the ground creating a space overlooking the lake and isolated from the noise generated by traffic. The parking is housed under the square, leaving the outer surface car-free and connected by walkways to the harbor and the park. Taking advantage of the terrain slopes, part of the square becomes a repository for storing rain water in surface and set a space where children can play with the level indicators.

Several concerts are held throughout the year in Hamar, which is why the proposal raises a multipurpose space capable of hosting concerts at any time. The proposal is based on a retractable roof that gives rise to two possibilities. When the cover is folded, it makes the sound barrier function, isolating the surrounding buildings. However when deployed, it creates a roof below the square creating a protected space where you can mount any facility.

This proposal aims to promote in the center of the square, the effects of the aurora borealis through a camera-like structure that partially buried makes use of a system of mirrors that project the event in a room protected from the cold. Additionally there are outside spaces with north-oriented areas which are air conditioned for those who want to see heaven.

Some performances are created on the square based in curiosity and object exchange. For this purpose there will be introduced some modules. These modules use translucent materials to reveal if there is something inside. The process of exchange is carried out in several phases. At first, it arouses curiosity in people that walk through the square. Then this curiosity leads them to interact with the modules, so they will open those items and pick up the objects inside them.

The concept of the square is created with the idea of generating two different zones based on the use of platforms at different heights. The conditions of both zones with its two ways of interacting with the climate allow the use of the square around the whole 365 days of the year, no matter the climate conditions. The first space is based on a stepped surface made for playing and takes sun baths. On the other side, the second zone is based on an interior space making use of the sunlight which passes through the platforms, to illuminate and heat up this space to enable alternative uses.

The concept of the square is based on a system of cables which are fitted, on one side, to the bordering houses and on the other side, to a series of balloons. The most interesting aspect of this square is to create a technical surface in continuous movement able to support any temporal installation useful to any kind of activity. These balloons bring colour to the square permitting the easy identification of the square in the middle of the public space of Hamar. Another interesting aspect is the ability to project information on the surface of these balloons, and this ways to share this information with the rest of the population of Hamar.

This proposal is based on the idea of a public space in form of a changeable puzzle shape where the urban furniture is able to adopt nearly infinite configurations generating in this way a serial of different topographies. The mentioned urban furniture is based on a system of modules which are meant to be moved by a minimum of two people so they could generate their own public space. This rough topography is able to be covered up with snow, sand or any other material that provide it a less edgy shape to enable the appearance of new uses. The kind of material to cover up with depends on the season or the activity that happens on the square.

Because Norway is a country where the children could grow up with favourable conditions, we propose the idea of making tree-houses for the enjoyment of children. The connection between these tree-houses generates a second level of playground independent from the actual plane of the square.

The square is based on continuous paths mixing private with public space and connecting with other public spaces like an unlimited space. The uses of the surrounding buildings are reflected in the square creating a multiplicity of activities, which are highly influenced by the different climatic situations of the seasons. We also use the slope of the square to create a big space under it used as a parking. That situation gives us a horizontal floor for the use of the square that isolates it from the traffic noise of the road in the south of the square.

In a society based on technology and digital media, we propose a place where the digital media becomes an important form of digital advertisement and generates a serial of zones based on the different nature of these advertisements, creating categories so that the people of Hamar could move through this digital space. Each citizen of Hamar has the ability to introduce advertisements and to communicate with the rest of the population of Hamar via several digital panels situated around the whole square.

Storytelling is part of the Norwegian tradition. Spaces are created where citizens can meet each other; telling and hearing stories, debates, meetings ... Our proposal generates staggered spaces with a hot spot in the center emulating a fire. Public space is used to create warm and intimate spaces where they can recreate stories from Norwegian mythology.

The square is based on a virtual orchard where the people of Hamar have the possibility to cultivate their memories. The weft of this system of digital orchards takes place via the generation of a pattern which is applied on the ground of the Stortorget square creating 30 “plots” inserting two hard drives in each plot materialized as digital walls, so that each wall is able to save the memories of about 500 people. Every citizen has 2Gb available to store the information they want to share with anyone on Stortorget. In this way any of the 30,000 citizens of Hamar can register and view the memory of others.

We propose the recovery of the previous commercial use on the square inviting people to visit the square. The space is organized so that the products of greatest need are located in the center of the square to allow the user to cross the square. The space is modulated by repetition of an element that structures the space. This element is similar to an inverted umbrella structure that can collect rain water and isolate from the sun. The water could be used to make cool air in summer or warm air in winter, with an extra facility.

Modules are arranged in the square by the user depending on the activity they want to develop in it. These modules have different sizes that imply a bigger or lower degree of involvement. This way depending on the amount of people involved, there are different possibilities of space arrangement. Public space is flexible and adapts to the different activities taking place in the square.

Moving water is introduced into the square in opposite to the lakes remaining water. It creates water currents on the square following the slope and generating intermediate spaces connected by bridges and platforms. In summer the river is connected to the lake, while in winter the water freezes to form a physical connection between the square and the lake

This proposal is based on the idea of a multifunctional element to take place in the square, able to sustain any kind of temporal installation. The square modulation allows the adaptation to different weather conditions depending on the season. By creating walkways and ramps at different levels we achieve different climatic meanings of the square. This proposal relies on the addition of facilities for changing the temperature and allows the generation of walkways.

By using a continuous element we generate different environments and spaces. Those elements are tubes that can change their diameter and colors so we can create cold and hot areas depending on the activities to develop in them. A grid of pipes is generated in the square so that these elements also serve as substrates for installations and exhibitions.

The public space becomes a virtual game board. Customers can access and download games from a square database or implement their own games. Some structures are created to accomplish this connectivity. There is a heating system in the ground to allow the use of the square during the whole year. Some screens are hinged to allow video projections.
