TaiwanFest 2008 Designed to bring Taiwan to you and the world! This year, the festival aims to present Toronto its own opportunity to expore the diversity and richness of Taiwanese culture. Come and see what we have to offer, including the historical, cultural, artistic, and culinary aspects of this vibrant nation.

Did you know? This multi-disciplinary event has attracted over 40,000 people in Toronto and 70,000 in Vancouver, making it the largest English and Mandarin-speaking cultural event in Canada. From 2001–2006, it has been given the CEIA’s Best Cultural Event award for six consecutive years, proof that it is among one of the most welcoming and active annual events in Canada. Come and enjoy this year’s TaiwanFest 2008.

PERFORMANCES

Eastern Legends: Chai Found Music Workshop Chai Found Music Workshop is one of the most famous Chinese instrumental groups in Taiwan. They are known for fusingTaiwanese folk songs together with western compositions, and have come to perform a mixture of Taiwanese, Chinese, and modern songs. Come enjoy a delightful symphony of traditional instruments, including the six most representative instruments of Chinese musical culture: the erhu, the di, the pipa, the guzheng, the yangqin, and the ruanxian.

Return to Innocence: Amis Kakeng The Amis Kakeng group is formed by the members of Taiwan’s largest indigenous tribe, the Amis. They were asked by the Taiwan government to serve as a cultural ambassador, with the purpose of introducing Taiwanese culture to friends across North America. Wearing traditional Amis clothing, the troupe is here this year to perform rousing traditional Amis songs using kakeng, a percussion instrument made of bamboo, along with other unusual instruments such as the bamboo nose flute.

Music Without Borders: Orchid Ensemble The Orchid Ensemble blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful new sound that is both creative and distinct. The ensemble embraces a variety of musical styles to its repertoire, ranging from the traditional and contemporary music of China, world music, new music, jazz, and creative improvisation. Acclaimed as one of the “brightest blossoms on the world music scene” (Georgia Straight), the Orchid Ensemble has been tirelessly developing an innovative musical genre based on the cultural exchange between Western and Asian musicians, and has now arrived to give you the pleasure of seeing them live.


Showtime Kaohsiung: Shu-Te Commercial High School Shu-Te Commercial High School is located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and aims to enhance international cultural exchanges. It has established sister school relationships with many schools in different countries, such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. This year, Torontonians have the pleasure of listening to their cultural performance at TaiwanFest 2008.

EXHIBITS

Eco Arts: National Taiwan Craft Research Institute The NTCRI’s primary objectives are to develop Taiwan’s craft culture, encourage design innovation, and encourage the development of culture. Hoping to foster an appreciation for high-quality crafts and international exchange, the 2008 TaiwanFest is happy to bring you their exhibit of the Eco Arts. Come see a showcase of various crafts brought about by the Aboriginal tribes and cultures that span all across Taiwan.

Legends of Watercolour: KJ Shen & Doris McCarthy Introducing the works and galleries of two indigenous artists: KJ Shen and Doris McCarthy. Together, they will be bringing you a collective exhibition of their stunning watercolour works that will document their takes on the world as it is.

Taiwan Uncensored Presenting Taiwanese history— uncensored. From news, occurrences, and wars to messy political relationships, this particular exhibition will expose a darker side of Taiwan, and its origins. This exhibition will hold photos, crafts, artwork, documentaries, etc. for your educational purposes.


CULINARY

What’s Cooking? State Banquet Chefs This is no ordinary dinner! Welcoming the cooking of chefs all over Taiwan, this culinary event is intended to provide a chance for all guests and visitors of this year’s festival to taste a mixture of different delicious dishes coming from cultures all across Taiwan.

Taiwanese Food Fair: Chef Chi Wen Chen The Taiwanese food fair will be offering visitors a taste-test of a wide assortment of freshly cooked Taiwanese foods and snacks, prepared by one of the top chefs of all time! Chi-Wen Chen has taken the lead in the fusion category of cooking at previous TaiwanFests, and is known for mixing American short ribs with dry Taiwanese noodles into an irresistable meal. Visitors will also learn a thing or two from the cooking shows happening all over the fair, and may also discover how Chi-Wen Chen never sogs up his noodles.

你知道嗎? 這個多元文化的慶典在多倫多已經 吸引超過四萬人, 在溫哥華也吸引超 過七萬人, 成為加拿大最大的慶典活 動。 從2001年到2006年, 已經連續 六年獲得CEIA最佳文化活動獎, 證明 它是加拿大最受歡迎和吸引人的文化 活動之一。 希望在你盡興地欣賞這次的節慶活動!

東方古典音樂: 采風音樂社

表演名單

采風音樂社是台灣最出名的中國國樂團之一, 他們以利 用不同的樂器演奏台灣民俗歌曲並融和西方近代的 音樂而聞名。六種代表性的樂器包括有二胡, 笛子, 琵 琶, 古箏, 洋琴等。

回歸純真: 阿美卡肯族 阿美卡肯族是台灣最大的原住民團體, 受台灣政府邀請 到北美表演台灣文化之一, 穿著傳統阿美卡肯族服飾, 吹奏用竹器做成的樂器。


音樂無國界: 蘭花國樂社 蘭花國樂社混合古代和近代樂器去創作美好動聽的音 樂.其製作曾經被譽為最富有創意的音樂表演. 它的表演刻 意融合了東方和西方音樂的特質。

經典高雄: 樹德高商 樹德高商位於高雄為提倡國際不同文化的交流而與加拿 大,法國,德國,日本,韓國,澳洲和美國建立了姊妹學校 的關係。 今年來多倫多做多元文化的表演。

藝術作品: 國立台灣藝專 國立台灣藝專致力於手工藝文化, 鼓勵和創新手工藝製品, 同時結合文化的發展和提升國際上的交流。 今年台灣節 慶將為你帶來台台灣全島各種不同類型的原住民的鄉 土手工藝術。

水彩淵源: KJ Shen & Doris McCarthy 介紹兩位鄉土著名水彩畫家 KJ Shen and Doris McCarthy, 他們將帶來驚人的創作藝術。

鮮為人知的台灣曆史 縱然是一些黑暗的, 不昰很愉快的台灣政治及戰爭史, 在 這裡也會用各種照片, 手工藝品及文件展示出來,具有極 高的教育目的。

吃什麼? 五花八門的廚師 這不是普通的晚餐。 歡迎來嚐試這些來自台灣全島的 廚師們為遊客所準備的佳餚美食。

台灣美食展覽會 : 陳其文廚師 台灣美食展覽會將提供旅遊客各種不同類型, 而又令 人垂涎欲滴的美食和點心。他是一位知名的廚師,歷年 來在台灣節慶的活動極具威名。他融合了東西方不同 文化的美食,其中最拿手的就是將北美的排骨和台灣的 麵創造出誘人的餐食。 遊客們可以在此展覽會學到陳 其文廚師不同凡響的麵食。
