SURF ART BY JOHNY

Sure, I´m Johny Vieira, Portuguese artist living in Santa Cruz Portugal. I was born far from the ocean. My parents (both Portuguese) raised me and my

sister in Switzerland. But when I was 9, we all came to my father´s roots village to live - Santa Cruz. There I met the ocean. When I was 12 , me and my friends were starting to learn it by ourselves and getting in love with surfing. We started to spend most of our free time there. Since then, I surf when I can. Not as enthusiast as 20 years ago, but still pretty stoked when it is good :) Apart from surfing; I ended up being a lifeguard as a summer job (between the years of university), judge of surf competitions, and starting to create art connected with the ocean. So, if I try to erase the word Ocean from my past, not much is left on my story or CV.

INTERVIEW

"I LIKE TO SHARE MY VISION OF WHAT SURFING IS." Tell us about an ocean memory.

When I was maybe 17/18 we did a little party at night at the beach - a clear full moon, barbecue, half meter waves, and the plankton was shining through the wall and foam of the wave while you surf it. Do you have a favorite motif for your work.

Yes I think it is the surf essence - the exploration, the adventure of finding a new spot, the fun, the sharing and gratefulness. and silence too. I like to share my vision of what surfing is.

MY STORY #BYOCEANPEOPLE

If You create benefits for the Ocean in any way, this is Your space. Send your story to hello@oceanhab.org

By Mariela

Hi, I am Mariela. I like to read my name as Mar y Ella, that means Sea and She. My relationship with the ocean started 10 years ago. I worked at a major financial institution in my home city of Guatemala. I used to be terrified to enter the water because of the warnings I was given about the unseen killers lurking beneath, such as sharks, jellyfish, stingrays and of course, the ever-present danger of drowning.

Long story, short, I loved it so much, that when I returned to Guatemala, without thinking about it, I sold all of my belongings, quit my job at the bank and moved to that small island in Panama. It is a decision I have never regretted. Within three years, I became a Scuba instructor. My passion for diving and caring for the ocean has taken me to live in amazing places such as Easter Island, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Bahamas and currently Mexico, where I have made a life and home for myself.

II became so in love with the water that I went from being terrified to enter it to feeding sharks and leading tours. Being in Mexico has connected me with the small community I live in. I started an Ocean Plastic project called @seaandshe where I use the waste and plastic that I take out of the water and create art. I became active in the local dive center and volunteered at a turtle shelter on the weekends. I want to spend my life working for the ocean. I want to be a person who inspires others to take a moment and realize the amazing beauty of the ocean and to acknowledge and respect the life that lives within it. We just need to change a basic little thing to make changes happen. https://www.instagram.com/seaandshe/

08 NOV 2021 | OCEAN PEOPLE

On a fateful New Years Eve, two of my friends asked me to join them for a scuba diving course on the Caribbean side of Panama. To be honest, I did not want to do it. That trip to Panama changed my life. I took the Scuba course and fell in love with the ocean. The feeling of the water. The multitude of life that lived just under the surface. I saw colors that I did not know existed! I simply could not get enough of this new world I discovered.
