Non-Thermal Plasma Ignition Technology Based on Nanosecond Electrical Pulses
ENERGY EFFICIENT, LOW EMISSION IGNITION Energy Efficient, Low Emission Ignition, or Transient Plasma Ignition (TPS) is a proprietary non-thermal plasma ignition technology based on nanosecond electrical pulses to enable lean-burn combustion in combustion engines. The energy in the ultra-fast pulses is used to make energetic electrons in a volume instead of heat at a single point as in a spark, enabling a fundamentally new ignition process that yields long spark plug life and allows combustion to occur faster and more efficiently. Operational test results to date have shown improved fuel economy by more than 20% and reduced NOx emissions by more than 50% in both gasoline and natural gas fueled engines.
TPS proprietary pulsed power systems will have major impact on large and growing market segments in aerospace, automotive, heavy transport, energy, medical, and agriculture based on early pilot studies. Other demonstrated applications include drag reduction in airfoils by more than 30%, improved wine quality, quantity and reduced maturation time after application to wine grapes, and a noninvasive cancer treatment that leaves no scars.
