What to do when mice head indoors ou probably have noticed the days are getting shorter, and by 8 p.m. it is already dark. With the shorter days come cooler evenings, and this is not lost on animals, among them, the local field mouse population. As the cooler temperatures arrive, mice begin seeking housing options that provide warmer shelter. Often, with the advent of cooler weather, mice invade homes, sheds and other structures that will provide shelter from the cold. Their gnawing damages goods and property, their feeding activities ruin shelved food, and their urine stains stored goods. Mice prefer to feed on grains, but usually nibble at a wide variety of foods including bird seed and pet food. Field mice require only 1/10-ounce of food and 1/20-ounce of water daily, surviving on food, alone, if it has high moisture. Field mice are brown to gray, with the tail as long as the body. Adults weigh about ½-ounce; their droppings are 1/8-inch long and rod-shaped. Their life span is typically one year, and they reach sexual maturity in only six weeks, after which they have up to eight litters per year, with five to six young per litter. One doesn’t need to be an Isaac Newton or a Carl Gauss to realize two mice soon become many. Mice are largely nocturnal, but will be active during daytime hours when food is scarce, when there is overpopulation or when a poison has been used and the population is sick. Mice are good climbers and are inquisitive, actively exploring anything new. They range only small distances from their nest, generally within 10 to 30 feet.

Decorators, or maybe your mother, used to tell you to skip the fake stuff if you wanted to stay classy. But improved manufacturing and materials are giving artificial plants and silk flowers a fresh reputation. “The technology has come a long way. They look so real now it’s hard to tell,” said Kathie Chrisicos, designer and president of Boston-based Chrisicos Interiors.

Selection savvy When you’re shopping for faux, pay attention to detail. Manufactured plants and flowers should have the variations in color, texture and density that live plants do, including the look of new growth and old growth, said Doug Hopeman, owner of the Nashville, Tenn.-based Artificial Plants and Trees. Visible stems, branches and trunks should appear realistic. “The ability to create the minute, intricate detail of everything about the plants and trees helps make them more natural-looking than they were 10 years ago,” he said. You can choose from an array of products. People often choose real plants that aren’t native to their region, so don’t feel limited to the varieties found near you when buying artificial ones, said Jo Pearson, a creative expert with Michaels Stores. “When it comes to creativity, there is no right or wrong way to choose,” she said. “The great thing is that artificial flowers and plants offer the flexibility to choose what you want when you want, regardless of the season or your region.” Current trends in greenery include palms

I was not able to identify the marks. In the 1950s, silver-plated copper serving pieces were of no collector interest. Someone discovered that by stripping off the old silver plating and polishing the copper body, the article became decorative and took on a completely new look. The process became a popular trend. This is most likely the story with your compote. When highly polished, the copper is beautiful. Potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

Since mice are active at night, it is necessary to recognize signs of their activity. Often, the first sign noticed are droppings or urine stains in and around buildings. Rodents usually have favorite toilet areas, but will void almost anywhere. Old droppings are gray, dusty and will crumble. Fresh droppings are black, shiny and puttylike. Rodents gnaw almost every day in order to keep their teeth short and sharp. Teeth marks on food, building materials, wire and edges of beams are indications of rodent presence. Often mice can be heard in the quiet hours of the night as they scurry from hiding to search for food. Given the rate at which they reproduce, mouse prevention is a prudent use of time for homeowners. Good housekeeping or sanitation is fundamental in rodent control. Eliminating food, water and harborage for rats and mice can rapidly reduce rodent populations. Clean up garbage and rubbish, properly store garbage (use metal garbage cans with tight-fitting lids), store food in covered, mouse-proof containers, and dry up any sources of water. If you have any fruit trees or a garden, pick up fruits and vegetables when ripe so rodents will not feed on them. Sanitation must be used constantly to be effective. Yearly clean-up programs are not frequent enough to insure the measures needed to prevent infestations. If you discover mice in your garage, shed or barn, quickly take action.

Although underrated, trapping is still an effective means to eliminate rodent problems. Traps are inexpensive, and are a good choice for mice control. Baited traps rely on the rodent being attracted for feeding. The bait must compete with other available foods, so it is important that food used for baiting be kept fresh. Peanut butter, bacon squares and gumdrops are good bait for mice, as well as small wads of cotton (they look for nest materials). Set baited traps at right angles to walls, behind furniture and near harborage where mice run. Remember to set traps where children and pets will not be hurt. Poison is another option, but it has several drawbacks that make it undesirable for home use. If mice consume the poison, then later die under cover, they often are not detected until odor becomes a problem. Poison baits also may be attractive to non-targeted groups, and can be a hazard for pets. Poison baits require precautions and management that is an unnecessary risk for control, given the option of trapping. With the arrival of fall, and the associated cooler temperatures, it is a good time to be aware that mice are seeking shelter. On top of my surprise appearance on the show, I also was surprised at the interest many homeowners have about installing a home water fountain. summer I’m going to change the look of my monogram by painting it white, dressing it up with a seasonal ribbon and some faux gerbera daisies and hang it on my door again. You can reinvent the monogram over and over again with just a can of spray paint, a roll of seasonal ribbon and maybe a faux bloom or two. About five years ago I made some adorable pillows, bearing my house number, to display on the wire chairs that flank my front door. They are so simple, yet so fetching, giving my front entrance a very personal touch. My entry is pretty sheltered, so I took a bold step and used cream fabric with a black monogram. To my delight, they have held up wonderfully, despite being outside all spring, summer and fall. I only wash them twice a year, and I probably wouldn’t even need to do that if my two cats didn’t sleep on them. As soon as guests walk through my front door, I like them to feel warm and cozy and welcomed. To make my lofty foyer more intimate, I’ve filled it with furnishings. A chair, personalized with a monogrammed pillow, is one of the first things you see when you walk in the front door. my master bedroom, and I have been managing it by washing it down every year or so. But it comes back even though I keep it ventilated. It is the only room in the house with this problem. It tends to be damp and the other rooms are dry. The only difference is that the bedroom is a step down and lower than the rest of the house. There is a crawlspace, and during the rain season it will get wet. But there’s no standing water and it tends to dry up as summer comes and goes. I was told to paint the walls with mold-resistant paint, but I read that this would not solve my problem. Please advise. Mold thrives in dark, damp and warm environments such as a closet or where furniture is placed tightly against an outside wall. Mold needs three things to survive and grow: water, warmth and a food source. Your drywall is an ideal food source because the paper on both sides of the drywall contains cellulose, the basis of all paper. If you see mold on the room side of the drywall, there is a 90 percent chance there is a larger area of growth on the backside of the drywall in the dark, often-damp recesses of the home’s structure. By cleaning the mold, you are adding water to the already affected area, thereby aiding in the growth and expansion of

the mold problem. I often hear stories of homeowners using household bleach to clean mold, but bleach only adds to

the problem. According to the Clorox Company, ” Regular Clorox bleach contains water, sodium hypochlorite, sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and sodium polyacrylate, in descending order of concentration.” Therefore, do not use bleach to clean away mold. Because the bedroom floor is lower than the other rooms in the home, the floors are closer to the damp soils of the crawlspace and I would assume the room is on the northwest side of the home. The northwest is the coldest side of the home, where condensation forms in colder months. As the soils under the floors dry, they release warm moistureladen air that finds its way to the wall cavities of the bedroom. The moisture-laden air condensates and feeds the mold on both sides of the wall. My solution would be to first locate the electrical wiring inside the walls so that you do not accidentally cut the wires. Next, use a drywall saw to remove the affected drywall, discarding it outside of the home. Remove damp or moist

wall insulation and any vapor-barrier materials you encounter. Allow the wall cavity to dry before replacing the insulation and drywall. Wearing a painter’s mask and rubber gloves, go into the crawlspace to inspect the floor joists and floor decking for mold. Use a wire brush to remove any mold found on the wood surfaces. Severe cases of mold growth in a crawlspace will require a treatment performed by a mold-remediation contractor. Add a 6-mil-thick plastic ground-cover vapor barrier over the entire crawlspace floor to restrict moisture migration. If water in the crawlspace is an ongoing problem, a foundation drainage system needs to be installed. What I am advising you to do is to eliminate the water and moisture source that feeds the mold. In more severe cases of mold growth, a dehumidifier is temporarily installed in the crawlspace to alleviate the humidity problems and allow the wood-floor system to dry. The mold will always be there in the wood, but when dry, it goes dormant. Wood is considered dry when it contains less than 19 percent moisture by content. Write to Dwight Barnett at C.
