mong the various questions we receive in the Extension Office, one of my least favorite comes from residents who have homes in northern climates, where they spend half a year during the summer months. My dislike for this question has nothing to do with the fact that they are away, but rather the impossibility of responding with an easy solution. The question is an old one: What should I do to prepare my lawn for a sixmonth absence? But the answer is complex, particularly for St. Augustine and zoysia lawns. If you are a six-month resident who is contemplating this question and you have not yet selected a grass for your home, might I suggest bahia grass? Of the residential choices, this type is among those that require the least attention. While it doesn’t thrive on neglect, it requires much less attention than St. Augustine or zoysia. If you have a lawn already, and need to be away for an extended period, you need to find someone who understands management of these grasses; someone who will actually follow through on the watchful care these cultivars require. Whether you are going, or for those of us who are staying for the summer heat, there are some principles that would be good to review for your own management or for those who you will be hiring to watch over your lawn. A first factor to consider is the soil type. Many of these residential properties are built on imported soils commonly referred to as “builder’s sand.” This material is great for houses because it is an affordable option, and it drains well.

In the U.S., “bidets were always seen as European, and an oddity of the French,” said Rose George, author of “The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters” (Metropolitan Books, 2008). In addition to general squeamishness about discussing the way we clean ourselves, some in the U.S. worried about the

high-tech toilets’ requirement that a grounded electrical outlet be nearby, or thought the early control panels made the toilets look clumsy. That said, the predecessor to modern high-tech toilets was actually invented in the United States, by Arnold Cohen of Brooklyn, who patented a pedal-operated seat he’d designed as a sort of sophisticated sitz-bath to help his ailing father. He founded the American Bidet Company in 1964, marketing his product as an “American way to bidet” and “the first wash and dry toilet.” But the subject was considered too vulgar for ads.

“I installed thousands of my seats all over the suburbs of New York, and we had offices all across the country,” said Cohen, whose company still exists. “But advertising was a next-to-impossible challenge. Nobody wants to hear about Tushy Washing 101.” The place where his invention really took off was Japan. “I licensed to the Toto company and sent container after container to Japan,” said Cohen, whose patent later expired. Toto came up with a more sophisticated version and by 1980 had trademarked the Washlet. Sleek, electronic and no longer marketed as primarily

a bidet, it became available in the U.S. in 1989. But it took another 20 years for mainstream American vendors like Home Depot and Lowes to embrace the technology and for prices to come down enough for average consumers. Toto’s top-of-the-line Neorest toilet, a tankless wonder with all the gizmos, comes out this fall priced at around $10,000. Most high-tech seats with important features such as a retractable wand and a drier cost between $450 and $1,800, and some basic water-cleansing models made by lesser-known companies now sell for less than $40. So far, the seats seem most

popular in larger cities on the East and West coasts, and in areas with large Hispanic populations. They seem to be gaining ground quickly among baby boomers and those who care for the elderly, as well as those interested in high-tech and environmentally friendly products. Scheer said the new type of toilet uses much less water and electricity than is required to produce toilet paper. One high-tech seat adds around $50 to $60 to the average household’s annual electric bill, but saves much more than that on the cost of toilet paper, the companies say.

HOLMES: Soil test recommended Continued from 4H However, these sands are largely free of any organic matter that might contribute to the health of turfgrass. The inability of these sands to hold moisture, a desirable trait during storms, is a problem for thirsty grasses like St. Augustine and zoysia. This is especially a problem during late May, which is typically the second driest month of the year in North Central Florida. As summer approaches, temperatures move above 90 degrees which, combined with the dry conditions, requires supplemental irrigation for both St. Augustine and zoysia, particularly in sand soils. Allow these grasses to dry and damage will occur. A second concern relates to the nutritional needs of these grasses. The University of Florida recommends 3 pounds nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of turf per year for St. Augustine and zoysia grasses. This might be applied in three 1-pound doses in late March, late May and early September, or better, six applications of one-half pound beginning late March, about six weeks apart. Choose a nitrogen source that offers a slow-release option. If a soil test has not been conducted, it would be good to submit a sample to the University of Florida Soil Testing Lab. Test kits are available at your local Extension Office. The next issue is mowing. It is important to keep mower blades sharp, and the builder’s sand discussed earlier creates rapid blade dulling. Length of cut also is very important. For fine-leafed zoysia varieties, allow grasses to grow to 3

inches, and cut them to 2 inches. For the wider St. Augustine, allow grasses to grow to 4 inches, and cut to 3 inches. Frequency of cut will vary during the season, depending on temperature, rainfall, soil type, sun or shade location, and general turf health. This is a problem for those who are away because they have a commercial firm cut grass, and commercial firms often operate on a schedule, which fails to account for the management factors just mentioned to determine when grass should be cut. Moreover, there is a temptation for commercial firms to overload the schedule, and grasses often are cut shorter than recommended in order to keep up with the schedule. The consequence of the “scalping” results in added stress for the grass, a condition that often doesn’t manifest until the following cold season. As you can see, there are many factors that create the need for decisions during the growing season. These decisions are hard to make when one is away. So what can be done to take care of turf when one is away for so long? Consider the option of bahia grass if you are making a turf choice. Next, see if there is someone dependable who will perform the checks of your grass every two or three days that are required for optimal — or even acceptable — performance. Finally, eliminate as much turf as possible, using landscape beds, if you are going to be away every year for extended periods. David Holmes is Marion County extension director. For an existing home, you can remove the moisture by installing a timer for a bath fan and set the fan to operate for 10 to 12 hours every day. Make sure the bath fan is vented all the way to the exterior of the home. The fan will remove excess

very spring, as the first crocuses push their way through the frozen ground, I whirl through my home switching the heavy layers of my winter decor to the lighter, brighter colors and patterns of spring. One of the first spots I hit? My accent pillows. Adding a few spring pillows to your sofa or bedding is one of the fastest, easiest and most fun ways to hit the “refresh” button on your interior decorating. 1. Embrace new spring colors Emerald green, navy, white — they are big, big, big this season. There is something so springy, so crisp and clean about navy, and when it’s paired with the brilliance of white and the vibrancy of emerald, it’s magical. When you pull in the colors of the season, don’t be afraid to mix up the shades. I toss together all pigments of greens and blues, just like Mother Nature does. I think it adds more depth. Another wildly popular spring color scheme is preppy pink and green. It’s a classic combo, but looks brand new when re-envisioned using today’s cleaner, more saturated patterns. Don’t

be afraid to layer up lots of bold colors, like lime green, fuchsia and goldenrod.

2. Explore new spring patterns Some of this year’s popular spring patterns are electrifying and make my heart thump with joy. But spring patterns don’t have to include a rainbow of peppy colors. Pare down to two or three colors, such as a wonderful green and white, found on a freshly patterned pillow. Toss it on a chair, including your dining host and hostess seats, and you are ready for the season. Spring is also the perfect time for quiet color palettes. The soft

blues and tans in the pillows above are dreamy and light and serene, like a spring day. Florals have made a big comeback in the past few years. But today’s flower power is cleaner, less busy, utilizing strong color blocks and empty space.

3. Experiment with new pillow shapes When you add your new spring pillows to your sofa, chairs or bedding, experiment with different shapes. Instead of just tossing matching square pillows on each corner of your sofa, incorporate three different sized pillows in a variety of shapes. For example, if

your sofa came with two 18-inch square pillows, as a lot of them do, add in a larger sized set of pillows, in from 21 to 24 to 27 inches square. If you are tired of the upholstery on your sofa, or the pillows that came with your sofa are getting worn down, have a new pillow cover made to replace the old. You will be amazed by how this easy switch instantly updates the look of your sofa. Then, strategically add a variety of pillow shapes to give your furniture that unbeatable custom look.
