grow in Florida? Yes, you can grow daffodils here, but you have to select the kinds of daffodils that will grow and follow a few planting tricks. The best varieties for our area are Carlton, Chinese Sacred, Erlicheer and Ice Follies. In North Central Florida, plant the bulbs in October and November. I try to get them in by Thanksgiving for flowers in February. Select a spot that gets plenty of sunshine; more than six hours a day, if possible. Well-drained soil is best, and make sure that the planting bed is free from competing tree roots. Plant the bulbs at 4 to 6 inches deep. If you plant them too shallowly, they will make a lot of leaves and may not flower. A good rule of thumb for daff bulbs is to plant them two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall. Space them about 6 inches apart. That’s a handslength apart if you don’t have your ruler in the garden with you.

nita and Jeff’s family room was an ’80s eyesore. Everywhere you looked there was wood — wooden shelving, wooden shutters, wooden cabinets, wooden mouldings. It was just way too much. Anita and Jeff actually liked the wood because it made their family room feel warm and cozy, but I convinced them that, in this case, less would be more. I wasn’t out to banish the wood from this space, but I was definitely looking to tone it down. Anita and Jeff agreed — albeit nervously — to let me paint all of the wood, with the exception of the shutters. The problem with this room was not that they used wood, but, rather, that they used way too much of it in the wrong places. My plan would keep that warm feeling by reintroducing modern wooden touches in new places. We started from the ground up by tossing the tired old carpeting, replacing it with wide-plank wooden flooring. The dated popcorn-plaster ceiling was concealed by a fresh layer of drywall. We added recessed ceiling lighting as well to help brighten up this family room. Next, we tackled the wood. Our painter spent four days on site. He painted the trim, wainscoting, crown moulding, baseboards and doors. Before he tackled the built-in cabinetry, we removed the arched and very dated fascia. Then, the lower cabinetry was treated to a

couple of coats of warm sea glass, while the upper shelving was painted a creamy mascarpone color for contrast. The focal point of this room is the newly renovated fireplace, where once again we called upon the skills of our trusty painter to paint the brick fireplace surround. Above a warm wooden mantel, we paneled over the brick with mouldings to frame a mirror with built-in sconces. We needed an area rug to anchor the space, so we chose a neutral, geometric print to bring the room together. A comfy sectional in oregano was layered with throw pillows in shades of cream, teal and sea foam. A round glass-topped coffee table with an airy open base gives Anita and Jeff a place to set down their coffee. One of the big challenges of doing a room like this is figuring out how to incorporate the homeowners’ sentimental items. These are the things that give a room personality, but often they’re also the most difficult items to work into a design scheme. In this

case, Anita and Jeff had two must-haves: a quirky lamp with a base shaped like a pile of books; and a stuffed owl that came from Anita’s grandfather. Both were unusual, to be sure. But a new shade restored the lamp, while the stuffed owl found a new perch on the stylish new media console, which we positioned under Jeff’s fancy new wallmounted TV. The old shutters made a comeback in their original form, bringing yet another touch of wood back into this space. Since shutters tend to be a bit on the severe side, I softened them up with drapery panels that bring out the warm colors of the room, while introducing subtle pattern. Anita and Jeff wanted to make sure their updated family room was still a warm retreat. By introducing wood in new places and new tones — floor, mantle, media console — we’ve kept that welcoming feeling. At the same time, we’ve updated

Chandeliers offer a brilliant stage for awe-inspiring displays that will take seasonal decorating to the next level. You can do as much or as little as you want and still get great results. You just have to know a few tricks of the trade. 1. BRANCH OUT: The first place I tackle when I decorate my home for fall and winter is the diningroom chandelier. Through the years, I’ve had a blast as I’ve tried different approaches. There are times I’ve gone a bit crazy. Once, I used my chandelier as the anchor for a huge canopy of pine branches, which extended out into the dining room, then dangled ornaments and ribbons from the boughs so it looked as if you were dining under a Christmas tree. Other times, I’ve simply twisted a few seasonal greens around the arms of the fixture and called it good. Before you begin, decide whether you want to create a display that is big and showy, or one that is super-simple. Then pull out a ladder, line up your decorating tools and start having fun. (Just be very careful as you navigate the ladder!) Speaking of securing

Sometimes I leave the branches long so they reach far out into the room, creating airy, organic arrangements. Other times, I trim the twigs tightly so the fixture display will be dense. We’ve experimented with different ways to secure branches to fixtures, and have found that clear zip ties work best. They are strong enough to hold just about everything, yet don’t show. 2. ENTWINE SOME VINE: When we decorate light fixtures at Nell Hill’s, we always include lifelike seasonal garland and picks. Our goal is to use the faux vines, leaves, berries and

grasses to create a suspended bouquet that mimics nature. First, spend a few minutes fluffing out the garland and picks, twisting and shaping them so they look lifelike. This small investment of time will make all the difference in the finished look. Then, weave the vines in and out of the arms and chain of the fixture, willy-nilly, so it doesn’t look fussy or staged. If you are using fallen branches, twist and loop the faux greens up and around the twigs and the fixture itself so they look like they just grew there on their own. Depending upon your

preference, you can make the display open and airy, with tendrils of vines looping free, jutting up and hanging down. Or, you can keep the vines and picks closer to the fixture. 3. DANGLE SOME BAUBLES: There is something sort of magical about being able to walk under a canopy of beautiful things, woven together in a multilayered tapestry. You can create a dramatic result at home by dangling treasures from your light fixture. We once swirled bare honeysuckle vines around the fixture, then hung clear glass prisms from the vine using white satin ribbons. Get creative when dreaming up baubles you can hang from your own fixture. Christmas-tree ornaments are perfect. So are hanging glass votive cups holding battery-operated tea lights or fresh flowers. 4. FINISH WITH FINESSE: Once your branches and greens are up and secured, add a few finishing touches. an attic room and you mentioned using materials with a high R-value. Can you tell me what the various R-values are for the different materials available? Should I also insulate the floor joists in my crawl? For those who missed this article, the R-value stands for the resistance of a material to thermal transfer. The higher the R-value of an insulating material, the better it is at conserving energy. The home stores I visit offer a variety of insulating materials, but the most common do-ityourself insulating materials are: loose-fill fiberglass; Kraft-faced or foil-faced fiberglass batts; loose-fill cellulose; foam panels; and expanding spray foams. Other insulating materials such as high-density fiberglass batts, mineral wools, cotton, sheep’s wool, hemp and straw are not normally used by the DIY homeowner (energy. gov/energysaver/articles/ insulation-materials). Spray foams are tricky to use and should not come into contact with your skin. Low-expansion foam insulating products usually are used around window and door openings or other narrow areas too small to insert fiberglass or cellulose insulation. The R-value of a common cell polyurethane spray foam is R-3.6 per inch. Adding insulation to an attic is a simple DIY project requiring the help of at least one friend or relative, but the job is easier if three people are

involved. Home Depot and Lowe’s stores in my area will rent or even loan the equipment necessary to add a blown-in loose-fill insulating material of fiberglass or cellulose. Loose-fill fiberglass has an average R-value of 2.5 to 3.7 per inch of added material. Cellulose has an average R-value of 3.0 to 3.8 per inch. You can add either product to the existing insulation in your attic, but I would recommend that you add a

similar material to what’s there now. Do not compact the insulation you’re working with by walking on the new insulation. Compaction dramatically lowers the R-value and the usefulness of the product. If you have fiberglass batts with a Kraft paper or similar that is facing the attic (this is incorrect installation), avoid adding insulation over the top until the paper or entire fiberglass batt is removed. Amanda Eliasch has put her personal stamp on a West Hollywood home and put it on the market for $2.7 million.
