Oriental rugs hit the ground running (again) By Jura Koncius The Washington Post

The tangerine and brickred vintage tribal Persian rug on the September cover of House Beautiful heralds a major design direction. Oriental rugs are back. And they're not just in your granny's living room. "Orientals add a lot of warmth and sophistication to a room," says Sophie Donelson, House Beautiful's editor in chief, who with her team selected the cozy sitting area in a Vermont farmhouse as the establishing shot for the allimportant fall season. It's the first Oriental rug on the magazine's cover since June 2008, she says. "Most Orientals aren't staid at all. They are really wild, gorgeous and intricate patterns — no two the same. They're a friendly, non-obtrusive ground for

a room," Donelson says. "They're part of filling a home with soulful objects." The old-world Oriental rug, long the anchor of Georgetown libraries and Central Park West salons, is making a comeback on Pinterest boards and in the homes of design lovers and millennials, who are decorating with it in fresh ways. While the design community scours auctions and old-line rug dealers for fine centuries-old carpets, younger shoppers on a budget are hauling rolledup Heriz rugs out of their baby-boomer parents' attics or snapping up Oushaks on Craigslist. They are discovering that small Orientals are great for layering over their bland sisals or using as a rich color accent in a hallway. And lifestyle bloggers seem ready to sign on for some warmth.

"I would have laughed a few years ago if you had told me I would own a Persian rug," says Sherry Petersik, 33. She and her husband, John, the Richmond-based Young House Love bloggers, have two young children and a dog. They recently bought two vintage Persians for a house they chronicle in their new book, "Lovable Livable Home": a tomato-red one for the living room and raspberry for their dining room. "This is sort of a new thing for us. We have never had a secondhand or vintage rug," Sherry says. She, and others of her generation, seem to be getting past buying disposable furnishings and are looking for something with personality that will hold up. Categorizing plants

M

y mistake! A chaste tree is not a Florida native. (And, yes, I did plant one recently.) My mistake does provide me the opportunity to talk about native plants, Floridafriendly plants, invasives, and a large group of plants that don’t fall into any of these categories. (I hear my educational psychology professor whispering in my ear, “Mistakes are our friends. How else do we learn?”) Examining the reasons we plant natives and Florida-friendly plants, looking at why invasives should be erradicated, and considering potential problems with non-native and Florida-unfriendly plants in the garden will, hopefully, allay any exasperation at my error. Native plants are the ones that we see as we walk the trails at Paynes Prairie and other natural areas in Gainesville and surroundings. In my flower garden I’ve planted many of these, trying to choose a spot that best matches where the plant lives in its uncultivated setting. Beautyberry, ironweed, scorpion tail, rattlesnake master, and goldenrod are examples of native plants around my yard. Because they occur naturally in this part of Florida, they will hardly need garden attention after establishment. Florida-friendly plants include natives. This category also includes many other plants that are similar to native plants needing only slight care once established. Like natives, these have few pest and disease issues. Also they will survive primarily on the water our weather provides. Diversity of such plants helps with both wildlife habitat and seasonal garden interest. My chaste tree, a native of southern Europe, falls into this category as do the bush daisies, African iris, plumbago and spiral ginger in my landscape.  Invasives are those plants we do not want within our landscapes or within Florida. They take over the yard and natural areas, growing profusely. I fight two invasives

in my yard: Chinese tallow and asparagus fern. Chinese tallow is so bad that there is a state-wide task force trying to eliminate it. In its management plan, the task force says, “Invasive plant species have been shown to modify ecosystem structure and function, reduce native species diversity, and contribute to the extinction of native flora and fauna.” So why do I have it in my yard? A Chinese tallow flourishes on private property in the neighborhood. Birds and wildlife help spread its seeds throughout the area. On the other hand, the asparagus fern is my own fault. I thought a potted plant could summer outside. That was the wrong decision, resulting in my digging its sprouts about once every six months. All remaining plants fall into the non-native, possibly unfriendly category. They may use too much water; they may need extra fertilizer or pesticides to keep them looking nice. Or they may be under investigation as either invasive or Florida-friendly. Research is always in process to determine what’s best for our yards. The goal is to be Florida friendly, helping not only our property but all surrounding lands. Florida-friendly plants are the focus of today’s Florida-Friendly Landscape Tour starting at the Boltin Center, from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants have the chance to look at five yards filled with Florida-friendly plants, including some natives, learning how these plants can be used in both formal and informal settings, gaining ideas for groupings, diversity, and interest. This landscaping is friendly to all Florida lands.

This is a great time to be selling a house—or buying one. Buyers as well as sellers can benefit. That’s because purchasing a home is comparatively inexpensive right now, thanks to still-low interest rates. So how do you make the most money, no matter which end of the transaction you’re on? The answer may surprise you. 1) Clean up, clear out! Nothing drives away would-be buyers faster than clutter, grime, and the weird smells that accompany a messy home. Vital to the process is de-cluttering and depersonalizing the space as much as possible. Buyers will have a hard time imagining themselves in your home if it’s filled with family photos and other personal effects. 2) Spruce up the kitchen! It is a real estate adage that the kitchen, more than any other room, sells the home. Make all of those minor repairs that can lead to serious second thoughts for buyers—the leaky faucet, the loose light fixture, the burn mark on the countertop. After making the kitchen fully functional, think about a gentle spruce-up. You can paint the walls, update the cabinet hardware or add new curtains, which will give the space a clean, fresh look. 3) Freshen up the bathrooms! Buyers want to see that a home is clean and well-maintained, especially in the bathrooms. Simple improvements like caulking the tub or re-grouting the tile floor will go a long way in the mind of a buyer. 4) Paint the rooms—selectively! A fresh coat of paint is the quickest way to transform a room. It doesn’t make sense to have your entire house repainted when all you need to do is hit the walls with a Magic Eraser. Kitchens and bathrooms are two candidates for a complete paint job given the high traffic they see. Whites and off-whites tend to attract the most buyers; the neutral palette allows them to focus on a home’s attributes. 5) Enhance the exterior! You wouldn’t go to a job interview without brushing your hair and putting on a clean outfit. Nor should you try to sell your home without sprucing up its exterior. Start with basic maintenance: mowing the lawn, trimming overgrown shrubs, applying a fresh layer of mulch to garden beds. As with your home’s interior, it’s also important to make minor repairs. Any house could use a good power washing followed by necessary paint touch-ups. The front of the building will get the most scrutiny. Prior to putting your home on the market, make the necessary improvements to transfer the home to the next owner.
