ictorian or Colonial revival? Modern or contemporary? Even if you’re just curious, knowing the style of a home can be helpful for buying, selling, remodeling or decorating. Deborah Burns, executive director of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, said many homes have easily identifiable styles — a Colonial has a symmetrical facade, a small portico and a center hall, and a bungalow has a central roof dormer and a foundation made with patterned concrete blocks. But she also cautions that not all resources offer the correct information, and not all homes have a set style. It’s hardest to pin down suburban homes, she said. If you’re curious about your home’s style, Burns said her go-to style reference is “What Style Is It: A Guide to American Architecture,” by John C. Poppeliers, S. Allen Chambers Jr. and Nancy Schwartz, calling it “the single most referred-to book for American architecture.” Lisa Adams of Adams Design in Washington, along with architect and designer Charles Almonte of Silver Spring, Md., offer their take on some of the styles found across the United States. BUNGALOW Smaller windows, a pitched roof and a front porch are characteristic of this early-20th-century style, Adams said. “The interior of the space tends to be more first floor, very little second, and tends to be dark because you have a front porch covering the windows. For the design, you have to take that into account. It’s very pretty.” Near a beach? Bungalow-style homes are commonly found by the water, Adams said. “Everyone has a front porch so they can be outside, and you want it to be dark inside if you’ve had too much sun.”

The evergreen leaves are shaped like a maple, and that resemblance gave the Abutilon its common name. Abutilons grow in USDA hardiness zones 8, 9 and 10, so they will grow well just about anywhere in Florida. They perform best in partial sun in improved, well-drained soil, and are quite drought-tolerant once established. Flowers of Abutilon range from yellow to red/ orange, pink and white. The blooms are shaped like a bell or Chinese lantern, and some cultivars have flowers that open like a saucer. Gardeners in North Central Florida have found them quite cold-tolerant

CONTEMPORARY Contemporary homes are “all ceiling and glass, like homes in Los Angeles,” Adams said. Contemporary homes built with large glass windows often are meant to take advantage of a good view, she said, so it’s best to choose furniture in a sleek, minimalist style, as opposed to bulky pieces that might block those views. MODERN A contemporary home, Adams said, is not to be confused with modern. Modern Common in the mid- to late 20th century, modern homes are geometric, symmetrical and lack ornamentation. “Modern architecture has a crisp, clean and tailored feel,” Almonte said. COLONIAL REVIVAL Calling it “a nod to Americana,” Almonte said this nationalistic design movement began in the late 1800s. Colonial revival homes are usually rectangular and symmetrical, with double-hung windows

CAPE COD Traditional Cape Cod homes, originating from England in the 17th century, are square, one or 1½ stories, with steep, gabled roofs. “Cape Cod houses were not so fancy,” Adams said. The kitchen is the focal point of many Cape Cod homes, Adams said. These homes also commonly have bedrooms on the first floor. Variations, she said, now often have additions that make them asymmetrical. GEORGIAN This style, with its origins in 18th-century Britain, is very formal and stately, Almonte said. Brick is the primary exterior material, with moldings for embellishment. “The style gives off a feeling of security and protection.” GOTHIC REVIVAL Born from a revival of medieval-era style in the 18th century, Gothic revival homes have “a lot of elements that give it more of a gingerbread frill,” Adams said. “It’s pretty.

The buyers are Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos and his wife, Nicole Avant, former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas, according to public records. The sales price was not disclosed. Built in 1996, the light and airy two-story house features four fireplaces and surf-facing balconies and decks. The four-bedroom, 3½-bathroom home

I had my vegetable garden soil tested. Everything is within healthy parameters, except the potassium levels were low. Is there an organic way to add potassium? Potassium is an important macro element in your garden soil. It is required for root growth, plant metabolism and to improve stress-tolerance in plants. Many organic gardeners add wood ash to the garden to bring up the available potassium or potash in the soil. Wood ash will have a liming effect on soil, and too much will increase pH beyond the ideal of 6.5. You can add wood ash in small amounts to your compost pile, and then

add the composted soil to the garden with good results. Another option to increase your pH is a soil amendment called greensand. Greensand is a naturally occurring material that contains the minerals glaucite and iron potassium silicate. Greensand contains 5 to 7 percent potassium. These marine sands have been mined in New Jersey, but most of what we can get now comes from Texas. Add up to 4 pounds of greensand per 1,000 square feet of garden soil. It will provide the needed potassium and help the water-holding capacity of the soil. Check with local nurseries for availability of greensand. You may have to order it from an online provider. to 15 years old. In the last couple of years, I have noticed that many roofs, including our own, have dark stains flowing down one side or another. The stains usually are on the north side, which gets the least sunlight. I assumed this was because that side did not dry out as well and that something in residual dampness was causing this discoloration. Today, I got a flier for a roof-cleaning contractor. It said such stain is from algae that “over time

causes permanent damage by taking root on the shingles, dislodging the granules that protect and color the roof. This algae also holds water to the surface of the roof and causes decay and rot to the roof’s underlayment.” I have not heard of roof-cleaning before. Does it solve the problem? According to my resources, algae do not have a root system and cannot “hold” water

Cyanobacteria have been reported to be responsible for the stains on asphalt-based shingles. Algae stains were not common in the older “rag content” shingles used some 20 years ago because there was no limestone filler in those older shingles. As the bacteria

feed on moisture or humidity and limestone (calcium carbonate), dark stains appear and then develop a hard UV protective outer coating. Given the fact that a standard shingle has a life expectancy of 20 to 25 years, and it takes at least five to eight years for algae stains to first appear, the shingles will most likely need to be replaced long before the algae could do any major harm. It still is recommended that the shingles be cleaned by a reputable contractor, and copper or zinc strips placed at the ridge of the roof to prevent

future growth. The oxide from the metal covers the roof every time it rains and prevents the growth of algae. When it’s time to replace the shingles, ask for algae-resistant shingles that have metal pellets embedded in the asphalt to prevent the stains from forming. Home Buyers Face Higher Closing Mortgages rates are still at an all time low but they have been inching their way up slowly. Rising mortgage rates aren’t the problem house hunters are facing. According to a survey by Bankrate.com, closing costs for loan origination and other fees have increased 6% in the past year. Borrowers with good credit who are making 20 percent down payment are still forking over an average of $2,402 in closing costs on a $200,000 loan. Don’t have 20 percent to put down? FHA offers 3.5 percent down payment and Veterans can qualify for 0% down payment, with funding fee charged and of course the origination fee and closing costs paid on all loans. The main catalyst for the increase is loan origination fees which have risen 8% in the past year. Rising interest rates often cause origination fees to go up, too. Lenders are also having to do more work underwriting loans. Rising mortgage rates often mean lenders make less profit on their loans, so they try to make up for the loss with higher closing fees, Guy Cecala, publisher of Inside Mortgage Finance, told USA Today. There are plenty of option available to borrowers. Borrowers should shop around because some lenders, banks and/or credit unions, may offer loans with no origination fee, Cecala said. Pairing opposites may or may not be the recipe for a good marriage, but it’s definitely an exciting approach when it comes to interior design. Here are five secrets for working the magic of high-contrast decorating into home design. 1. PAIR LIGHT AND DARK COLORS: One of the most effective ways to play with opposites in decor is to pair dark and light colors. Some of my favorite dynamic duos? Black and white. Navy and cream. My dining room features navy walls. I painted the trim and the paneling, which covers the lower portion of the walls, in cream. Black and white is a timeless classic. You also can use highcontrast color combinations in furnishings. Just place a light-colored piece

MIX REFINED AND ROUGH OBJECTS: Create tableaux that include both refined and rough elements. We wanted to make an elegant silver tea service even more arresting, so we brought in some visual contrast by including a gritty garden statue in the display. The pairing of these two unlikely partners makes them each all the more beautiful. A natural place to blend refined and rough is in outdoor rooms. A weatherworn cement table stands in my courtyard yearround. It seems ironic to cover this rugged piece of furniture with a gorgeous custom tablecloth, doesn’t it? A delicate urn on the table doesn’t belong out in the yard — or does it? It

does at my house. 3. BLEND THE ELEGANT AND EVERYDAY: When designing rooms, I intertwine pieces that are elegant with those that are everyday. One friend’s home is a great example. We dressed her formal sofa in sophisticated silk pillows. Then we contrasted this fussy fabric with no-nonsense window coverings: garden-variety bamboo roller shades. I’m bringing the same concept to life in my home right now. I’ve covered some upholstered furniture in ticking, one of my favorite fabrics because it’s so simple and unassuming. Then I helped it go a bit uptown by tossing on some accent pillows in a formal damask. 4. WED THE MANUFACTURED WITH THE ORGANIC: I’m increasingly in love with the clean and simple contemporary accents that are so hot today, like colorful pottery. But an unshakable bedrock of my style is using organic elements in everyday decor. To create a high-impact, high-contrast look, I use them both, together, in my decor. I often display items that are

made out of natural materials with those that are not. For example, I may place a lovely drinks service on a wicker tray. Or fill a china bowl with stones or nuts. 5. PUT INEXPENSIVE AND EXPENSIVE TOGETHER: Sometimes there is no replacement for using well-made, high-quality pieces in your decor. I feel that way about upholstered furniture. You definitely get what you pay for. But when I can, I love to cheat, opting for pieces that look super-expensive but are a bargain. If you wander through my home, you’ll see pieces of great value mixed together with those that are inexpensive. Often, they are hardly distinguishable from one another. Another example is the place setting, where I grounded the display of china on inexpensive placemats.

To lighten this style of home, Adams said, it’s common to paint paneling white or modify the windows and lighting to help brighten and illuminate the space. FEDERAL Federal homes are intentionally extravagant, Adams said. The late18th-century style

typically features a center hall, a Palladian window, an arched and columned door and a high ceiling. Federal homes were built by those who wanted to show off their wealth, Adams said, but borrowed the basic structure of a Georgian home. RANCH Almonte had a simple definition for these single-story homes with rectangular shape and low rooflines: “nondescript.” “They have no particular character or defining features,” he said. “The style is inspired by the Prairie style, but unfortunately this is the strippeddown version of the Prairie. It has no embellishments.”

Adams said ranch homes, first built in the 20th century, are practical for aging adults and families with young children. VICTORIAN The style is defined by the ornamentation of the prosperous Victorian era (mid- to late 19th century), including curved towers and spindled porches. Victorians are decorated “pattern on pattern, texture on texture,” Adams said. To furnish the interior of a Victorian home, Adams said, she would pull from elements of the time period, but it is not a style to base a whole room on. “Most people couldn’t live that way. And that’s true with all of these styles.”
