How you decide to decorate your foyer can set the tone for the rest of the house. The Washington Post

But let’s say your taste swings more contemporary, or your house dates brass to the ’80s, is brassd infused and e. needs an update. One of the best places to start redecorating is the foyer. “I think an entry should set the tone of the house,” sayss designer Raji n of o Radhakrishnan ociiates Raji RM & Associates in Washington. You want it to “hint at what’s to come inside.” If your entry hints that you’re boring and tired, don’t despair. Designer Regan Billingsley offers this advice: “Updating an entry can be as simple as painting or changing light fixtures, rugs and accessories.” Radhakrishnan and Billingsley offered us a few ideas for inspiring awe upon arrival. FURNITURE WITH FORM AND FUNCTION: The challenge with entries, Radhakrishnan says, is that “you want to balance both function and

beauty. …You want it to be useful to hang your coats, remove your shoes, bags, etc., but you also want it to be pretty.” Coat closets are traditionally the best way to tame the clutter. ollowing the first heavy rainfall of the season in early July, there were numerous problems with large oaks toppling in the North Central Florida area. About this same time I was having a discussion with a couple of nurserymen about the underuse of crape myrtle standards as a small tree for urban yards. At the time, we were admiring a crape myrtle standard that had grown to a height of about 20 feet. It had a thick trunk, had been nicely shaped and provided desirable shade. One redeeming virtue of this tree is the fact that it doesn’t become large enough to do significant damage in the unlikely event it were to topple in storm winds. Even if it did, there wouldn’t be anything too heavy for the average homeowner to clean up. In considering the suitability of crape myrtles as a small tree, perhaps the place to begin is with the term “standard.” This might be defined as a crape myrtle that has been trained into one single, straight trunk. Branching begins about 5 feet above the ground, so the tree has one dominant trunk until the first branches emerge and all scaffold branches emanate from this trunk as opposed to the multi-trunked plants that are prevalent as small shrubs. The plant has been pruned at the nursery so that it has a defined tree-like canopy. Two cultivars in particular — Natchez, which is white, and Muscogee, which is purple — are excellent choices for standards.

Backus produced beautiful fine art oil-on-canvas paintings that sell for considerable prices. To my knowledge, he did not produce original prints. The print you have might have some value if it is signed by Backus, but I will assume it is not, since you have not mentioned it. This leaves potential dollar value as catch-as-catch-can. HOLMES: Crape myrtles a tough plant that handles our varied climate Continued from 4H There are several advantages to a crape myrtle that make it a desirable small tree. Although it is not a native tree, it is a tough plant that handles the inconsistencies of North Central Florida’s climate, withstanding flooding and drought, summer heat and sudden swings in temperature during fall and spring. Although I have examined cold-damaged crape myrtles, these occurrences have been rare, and the plants exhibited death only in the upper portions of the canopy. Next, the plant tops out at about 20 to 25

feet in height, which is ideal for most urban lots. The thick canopy of a healthy crape myrtle provides good shade during the summer season, and although it loses leaves in late fall, these are small and raking shouldn’t be necessary. Crape myrtles perform well in a variety of soils, and once established, the plant probably won’t need fertilization. No tree is perfect, and there are a few problems to be aware of in considering crape myrtle standards. ■ They are subject to aphid feeding, and large populations of this insect can cause decline,

particularly if left untreated. Sooty mold is a black covering that grows on the leaves of the plants as a result of aphid feeding. If detected, treat for aphids using insecticidal soap or imidacloprid products, being careful to follow all label directions. ■ Crossing branches are common in crape myrtles, and light pruning will be required to keep the trees in form. Over time, carefully thinning the canopy will improve light penetration while enhancing branch structure. Sucker stalks will emerge from the base of the tree and will need to be trimmed

away during the summergrowth season. ■ These trees do produce seeds, and the dry seed pods can be a drawback if the plant is located close to a patio area. Seed pods generally open in winter, and the protective shell can be a nuisance near driveways and sidewalks. Occasionally I notice small seedlings emerging in nearby plant beds, but these are minimal and easily weeded if caught early. Crape myrtles are colorful, as an added bonus. The vibrant, long-lasting nature of the summer bloom is well-known, but during the fall season the

leaves give some color, and the trunks also display an interesting pattern during the winterdormancy season. With only a few faults, the positive qualities of the crape myrtle standard make it an excellent small tree for urban lots. Unlike some of the large oaks, during the windy days of spring and the stormy days of summer, one need have no worries about crape myrtles falling on the house. Any additional pressures against the foundation wall could cause additional damage to an already weakened structural wall. As unlikely as this is, it’s just a good idea to have a photographic report on the condition of the foundation before and after the repairs are made.

How to plan a simple summer happy hour at home Scripps Howard News Service

ith its long, laidback days and evenings that seem to stretch into infinity, summer is the perfect time of year for gatherings with friends. But with work, family and all the other demands of life, sometimes we just don’t feel up to hosting a big to-do at our homes. I’ve found that the key to getting your “friend fix” without stressing yourself out by adding more work into the mix is to chill out when you entertain in the summer. Here are two approaches I like best: STIR UP A SIGNATURE DRINK: One of my favorite timesavers is to mix up a

signature drink for the evening. Find a fun summercocktail recipe online or opt for a sure crowdpleaser, like my friend Cyreesa’s Summer Brew — vodka, beer and lemonade concentrate mixed together for a bubbly, tangy and refreshing drink. (You’ll find lots of recipes for this favorite on Internet sites.) If you prefer a virgin drink, select one that pulls in the season’s best flavors, like water infused with cucumbers, melons and

mint. NEXT, SET UP A SIMPLE BUT STYLISH BAR: I like to entertain outside during the summer, so I set up a drinks station on a console table on the patio. If it’s too hot where you live and you want to stay in where it’s cool, set up the bar on your kitchen island, on a corner of your dining table or on the coffee table in the living room. My favorite indoor-bar spot is in on a butler’s cart in my foyer, where guests can help themselves to a drink when they arrive. Keep your summer bar simple. Start with an attractive drink dispenser you can fill up with your signature drink, allowing guests to serve themselves.

If you want a second drink offering, serve it in a cute pitcher. It may be as simple as chilled water with sliced lemons. You’ll want to serve a few appetizers for guests, but, again, keep it simple. I keep a few things on hand that I can pull out in a snap when friends drop by, such as: ■ Artisan crackers ■ An assortment of nice cheeses ■ Cashews ■ Fresh fruit The key to making this simple fare seem elegant is to display it in a lovely way. Put crackers into a silver pedestal bowl. Place your cheese assortment on a silver tray. (Sprinkle a bit of trail mix of nuts and

dried fruit over a cheese wedge. It looks so elegant!) Place cashews in a pretty bowl or in a compote. Put the fruit on a tiered dessert server. CHILL A BOUNTY OF BOTTLED BEVERAGES: Want to spend even less time pulling together your simple happy hour? Just serve bottled beverages, like wine, craft beers or soft drinks. When the beverage offering is this easy, you can have a bit more fun staging your serving area. One fun trick is to set out a lovely ice bucket to chill drinks. How about an aluminum ice bucket? Or chill beverages in aluminum punch bowls, wooden dough bowls, garden urns,

blue-and-white cachepots, even birdbaths. A summer happy-hour spread can be tricked up in many ways, depending upon your choice of glassware, plates and napkins. I like to use colored stemware and tumblers for casual happy-hour bars. This also is the perfect opportunity to pull out seasonal accent plates, like majolica-leaf salad plates or an interesting collection of dishes, like vintage hand-painted plates or Depression glass.
