He didn’t call them lanterns or lamps; he called them light sculptures.” Noguchi’s concept “stood in sharp contrast to 1950s contemporary, modern, efficient lighting trends,” said Peter Barna, provost of Pratt Institute, the art and design college in Brooklyn, N.Y. Popular lighting options of the day included track lights, adjustable desk lamps and “pole lamps with conical shades,” added Barna, a former president of an international lighting design firm. Noguchi’s designs were radically different, “a sculptor’s memory of the soft magic of material and light,” Barna said. Eventually, Noguchi developed a relationship with one family of lantern makers. The same family still produces his designs today. “They’re all handmade, each one, individually, from molds. They’re not mass-produced,” Dixon said. “We’re now working with the third generation there, filling our orders. ... Our biggest challenge is meeting the demand.” Each lamp has bamboo ribbing and standard wiring, and can accommodate incandescent or compact fluorescent bulbs (45 watts for small lamps, 75 watts for large). Designs range from spheres, discs and cylinders to triangles, boxes, trapezoids, and other geometric shapes and combinations. Most shades are white, but some are decorated in orange, green or black; a few bear abstract designs.

leaves. This is an established privacy hedge, and I don’t want to lose this green wall between me and the neighbors. The leaves get spots and then fall off. Is there anything I can do? Mirror leaf viburnum, or Awabuki viburnum, is a gorgeous evergreen hedge plant. Many folks are familiar with the normal viburnums such as the Sandankwa viburnum, sweet viburnum, or our native type, but the Awabuki viburnum is just a little more attractive with its 5-inch-long glossy leaves and upright growth habit. They can be susceptible to a downy mildew disease that is favored by high humidity and cool nights. Downy mildew blight first starts as large brown spots that merge together. The leaf then takes on a bronze color, curls up and drops to the ground. The spots are on the upper and lower sides of the leaves and the disease progresses quickly. Soon you will see large gaps in the hedge.

This will help to prevent the spread of the disease back into the hedge. Also, notice where your irrigation is hitting the plants. If your sprinkler is hitting the foliage, redirect the spray so it does not come in contact with the leaves. Downy mildew is a water mold and will be spread by irrigation water. Then you will need to treat it with a fungicide like Heritage or Insignia. Repeat applications will be necessary to bring back the leaves to the hedge. Next spring, watch the Awabuki viburnum carefully, and at the first sign of trouble, treat it with the fungicide. ■■■

grass seems to melt down and die. With all the wonderful rain we have been receiving, it is normal to see some disease problems. The spots you are seeing on the St. Augustine grass are more than likely caused by a disease known as gray leaf spot. It is the most common fungal disease, and mid-summer is the perfect time for it to rear its gray, ugly head. You first notice a thinning of an area of turf normally in the shade, and on closer inspection of the blade of grass, you’ll notice elongated gray spots, often with a reddish margin. Current UF/IFAS Extension recommend a fungicide treatment. Banner Maxx and Heritage products will be effective. Spot spray where you are seeing the problems. Beyond chemical treatment you also need to look at the growing conditions of the grass. A few cultural changes

can make a big difference in preventing gray leaf spot in the future. Irrigate early in the morning instead of in the evening. Evening waterings allow the grass blades to stay wet for a long period of time, and this encourages fungal growth. Avoid rapid flushes of growth that can occur with over-fertilization. Follow the IFAS guidelines for turf fertilization to prevent diseases and nitrogen runoff. Brighten the area, if possible, by lifting the tree canopy. Growing grass in heavily shaded areas can make the turf weak and more susceptible to problems. Many appear breathtakingly elegant; others have a whimsical, futuristic look. Cheap imitations of Noguchi lamps — especially the white sphere — have become so ubiquitous that they’re almost a cliche of outdoor party decor and a somewhat bohemian style. But why spend hundreds on an original when you can get a knockoff for a fraction of the price? Aside from the difference in workmanship and

materials, Berman points out that “the knockoffs aren’t quite his designs.” Dixon also notes, “Noguchi made these lamps so that people could buy them and live with his sculpture. It was the idea that you, too, the every man, for $100, a modest amount of money, could own an artwork by a prominent person.” One downside: The paper is vulnerable to damp climates. And what if you don’t live in a home defined by modernist aesthetics? Would a Noguchi lamp work with flowered curtains, an overstuffed sofa and patterned wallpaper?

Berman thinks “antiques and modernist pieces can work well together.” But whether you mix the lamp in with a jumble of interesting objects or set it off as a special piece, she said, consider its shape. In a room with lots of square and rectangular lines, go for a rounded lamp; in a room with curves in furniture and decor, go for a linear lamp. Barna agreed that the lamps can work with any style, but noted they “were conceived as sculptures that delicately stand as warm friends in an interior space. They glow, so will probably be the dominant focus in any space they are in.”

In some older homes, asbestos can be found on the joints of the furnace’s ductwork, as a binder in floor tiles and the glue for the tiles and as a binder for plaster. Asbestos is a known

This is often referred to as “friable asbestos” and should be removed only by a professional environmental contractor. When the furnace fan is on, the return ducts will be under a negative pressure and air can be pulled into the ducts at the seams that are covered with asbestos tape. Some of the asbestos fiber will most likely be pulled into the ducts as well and distributed to the whole house. The supply ducts that

send air to the registers are under a positive pressure, which will blow asbestos fibers into the air at the joints and seams. If you look at the registers at the ends of the supply ducts, they also may be wrapped with the asbestos tape. Whether or not your daughter sells the home, she should have the asbestos professionally removed and the air in the home flushed through a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter to remove any lingering asbestos fibers.

f you were to rank your home-decorating projects, chances are “get new bedding” is low down on your list. We often sacrifice the style in the private spaces in our homes because they are out of the public eye. But think about this: Your bedroom is your sanctuary, and it’s up to your bedding ensemble to set the tone for this all-important space. I’ve found that remaking your bed with a new ensemble completely transforms the look of the entire room. Let’s check out six hot trends in bedding. 1. FLOWER POWER: Today’s florals are blooming with new hues and patterns. Because many floral fabrics mix in a multitude of colors, they offer a great basis for pulling a rainbow of colors into your bedding ensemble. And their perky patterns bring graceful movement to the lines of the bedding. When you pair a strong color like coral, for example, with soft neutrals like cream and taupe, it feels lively but serene. If you like florals, pick a pattern that makes you swoon as your inspiration. Citron is the hottest color of the season, and we play it up big. We’re pairing this shade, which rests somewhere between yellow and green, with black, white, gray, turquoise and coral. 2. STRIPES, STRIPES AND MORE STRIPES: We’re seeing it all right now — fat stripes, skinny stripes, in-between stripes and a combination of all of the above. We used the still-crazy-popular chevron stripe as our inspiration for one bed because we adored this particular fabric, which weds the graphic elements of a chevron with the romance of a floral. The blue and green that dominate the palette was our jumpingoff point for the rest of the accent pillows on the bed, all of which celebrate the clean geometric shapes and fresh colors that are inspiring today’s designers.. 3. GEOMETRICS STACK UP: Designers are getting playful and reinventing the neat graphic patterns of old, and I’m loving the look they’re creating. We’re seeing lots of newly interpreted imperial trellis patterns, Greek key, polka dots, diamonds, all in vibrant, saturated colors. Although we really like to mix lots of surprising fabrics together when we create our custom bedding at Nell Hill’s, we tie the divergent looks together by repeating fabric patterns and colors. 4. IKAT CELEBRATES THE BEST OF OLD AND NEW: Ikat — that ancient pattern that has been unearthed and reinvented by today’s designers — is still immensely popular and won’t be going away anytime soon. In fact, we’re seeing the Ikat effect, of creating an image by clustering parallel lines very closely, being used to create a wide variety of shapes like stripes and polka dots, not just the standard Ikat shape. We want to install glass shower doors, and want to know the different types available. Glass shower doors generally come in one of four basic styles. I recommend choosing from one of the following: ■ Pivot: This is a swinging-type shower door that
