GARDENING Bearded and crusted trees are disturbing to some few years ago, I took a call from a lady who was relatively new to Florida. She was very concerned about the Spanish moss growing on trees in the area. She said she was going to make it her life’s mission to rid Marion County of all the Spanish moss, starting with Highway 475. I informed her that Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is an epiphyte, and it does not harm the tree, it only attaches itself to a host for support and protection. Spanish moss is a natural occurrence in the South, and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air through scales on its leaves. Spanish moss can be found on deciduous and evergreen trees. Preferred trees have almost horizontal branches, a significant number of forked branches and rough bark that can catch and retain the seeds the Spanish moss produces. Common host species in Florida include live oaks, pecans and hackberry. Fences, telephone lines and other non-living structures also serve as hosts. Spanish moss prefers trees that are in decline. The sparse foliage provides the well-lighted environment it

This cubicle was styled using a bold fabric pattern on the facing cubicle wall and black-and-white patterned contact paper on an upper cabinet and various accessories. The cubicle is outfitted with items picked up at a flea market and items on hand, costing less than $50 to decorate.

Bring your personality into your workspace The Associated Press

e focus so much energy turning a house into a home, we sometimes forget to aim our decorating genius in another notable direction: the office cubicle. Home often expresses who we are, filled as it is with accumulated treasures and trinkets. But skip on over to the office cubicle — or, for that matter, an office with actual walls — and it can be a different story. Some offices “are so dated. It’s wallpaper from the ’70s, falling-apart furniture and stacks of files — generally, an overall mess,” says Sayeh Pezeshki, a designer who blogs about decor at The Office Stylist. Considering how much time many people spend at work, “Your work space should be cheery and it should be fun, and it should be personal to you,” says Sabrina Soto, designer host of HGTV’s “The High/Low

W

Project.” A soothing environment cuts down on work stress, designers believe. “It really does affect the way that you work and the way that you feel,” says Pezeshki. And, she says, “You don’t have to spend a lot of money” doing it. Bob Richter, an interior designer and cast member of PBS’ treasure-hunting series “Market Warriors,” visits flea markets wherever he travels, returning home with one-of-a-kind mementos. “I feel like a cubicle or a small office should feel like a small apartment,” says Richter, who lives in a small New York City apartment. “Things have to be tidy, but there also has to be an opportunity to store things easily.” Richter suggests combing flea markets for unusual boxes and baskets for storing supplies on an office desk. He uses old metal coffee tins and vintage ceramic planters for holding pens and other supplies. “There’s a nostalgic vibe to these items,” Richter says. Soto suggests using lacquered boxes or stylish fiberboard boxes, like those sold at

The Container Store. Good lighting, an attractive memo board, and at least one living plant or cut flowers also are essential for cultivating good cubicle ambiance. Bring a desk lamp from home for task lighting; it’ll cheer up the space. Bring in low-water, low-light plants — at least one. Two plants that are good at surviving indoor light are pothos and heartleaf philodendron. Peace lilies also crave low light and are excellent at cleaning indoor air. “Keep one on your desk,” says Richter. “It feels like there’s life there.” For the memo board, Richter suggests framing a section of cork, dry-erase board or good-quality plywood painted with chalkboard paint. Frame it in a vintage frame — it’s a tenth the price of a new frame, he says — or float the memo board inside the cubicle wall’s frame. Soto likes to paint her frames in bright colors, as does Pezeshki, who’s all in for the bling. Her own office — not a cubicle — is painted black, purple and metallic silver. Its silver accents include a gallery wall of ornate frames and a large floor lamp.

“I think (the office cubicle) is an area where you can let your personality do the talking,” said interior designer Bob Richter.

DESK: Decorate

according to your own personality Continued from 6H “It’s very glam, because I’m very glam,” says Pezeshki. “I like shiny things and blingy things.” That’s the important thing: to decorate your cubicle according to your own personality, the three designers say. If you like sports, use memorabilia. If you’re a movie fan, go that route. “For me, a place I want to be is a place surrounded by the things I love,” says Richter. “I think (the office cubicle) is an area where you can let your personality do the talking.” More tips: ■ Keep it tasteful, says Richter, and check with your human resources manager before turning a cubicle into a fully furnished room. “There’s a fine line between personalizing your desk and going overboard,” he

says. ■ Ditch the sticky notes and the hanging calendar, which add clutter, Soto says. Lean a small dry-erase board against one wall and jot down notes there. Use an electronic calendar. ■ Hang an attractive fabric along the cubicle walls, attaching it with decorative push-pins. Hang framed artwork. “Anything to make the cubicle walls look like normal walls,” Soto says. ■ Cover bookshelves and cabinets with printed contact paper. “It instantly pulls together the look,” Pezeshki says. Pick five or six things currently sitting on your desk and replace them — pencil holder, frames, tape dispenser — with the look you want. ■ Add silver accents. And paint whatever you can, Pezeshki advises, including the metal “in/ out” box for papers.

Casey Kasem lists Top 40 reasons for selling Westside estate Los Angeles Times

asey Kasem, who gained a national radio audience after “American Top 40” launched in 1970, and his wife, Jean, are listing their Westside estate for sale at $42 million. With 12,000 square feet of living space, eight bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, the home has been the site of intimate interviews and sleepovers Kasem for as many as 20 youngsters a night. The yard has served as the site of elaborate celebrity-studded gatherings and paintball battles. The syndicated radio host bought the property for Jean Kasem in 1989 as a gift. “We lived in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel,” she said, “and I didn’t want to leave.” But she was expecting, and his logic won out. “You can’t raise a child in a hotel.” The couple liked the 2.4-acre site near a main artery, which made it convenient for them to commute to their radio and television work. Trees line the streets, and mansions sit on green lawns behind gates and hedges. “It seemed,” she said, “like a place where we could put down roots.” The footprint of the James Dolena-designed house, where rooms spill off wide hallways, suited their needs. Little else, however, reflected their tastes and preferences. So Jean Kasem began a decades-long project

“We tried to make it a home, not a mansion, because mansions are tough to live in.” JEAN KASEM rebuilding, expanding and continually updating the estate. “We tried to make it a home, not a mansion,” she said, “because mansions are tough to live in.” In fact, she was still making changes as the single-story home was readied for the market. Casey Kasem jokingly calls her “Lady Winchester” in reference to the Winchester Mystery House, the San Jose, Calif., mansion that was continually expanded throughout its owner’s lifetime. The Kasems’ sensibilities are evident even at the home’s circular motor court. The central fountain was built around an ornate piece of the Brooklyn Bridge. The interiors are filled with antiques the Kasems have collected, and reflect Jean’s love of color and textures. Window treatments include copies of historic fabrics in keeping with the furnishings. She frequently visits Jan’s & Company in Los Angeles to look for antiques. “Our favorite room is probably the library, where we collected books from all over the world, brokered deals and did our interviews on camera and radio,” Jean said. The comfortable room, near the oval entry, also is where the couple edited “Top 40” scripts. Many spaces are devoted

Fireplaces can be found in the family room, the library, the two master suites and even one bathroom. The landscaping includes mature trees, hedges, formal gardens and an expanse of lawn. Par-three golf can be played on a Bobby Trent Jones-designed course. Citrus

trees, grapes and strawberries occupy a corner of the yard. Soon after the Kasems bought the estate, they hosted a 5,000-guest benefit. “This property was meant to be used,” Jean said. “The grounds are park-like and taunt you to have fundraisers.” Perhaps most memorable for the Kasems were the theme parties for family,

friends and neighbors. For an early Sea World party, the former swimming pool took center stage as seals and a whale performed in the water. Sand was trucked in, Jean recalled. “We brought the beach to the backyard.” In closing down the party, however, the animal handlers encountered some resistance from one of the performers. “They had to drain the pool to get the creature out,” Jean said. She then replaced that pool with a heart-shaped one that has two bath houses. Currier & Ives was the theme for a Christmas party with guests arriving by horse-drawn surrey, carol singers and a faux ice-skating rink gracing the lawn. For their daughter’s prom, the Kasems tented the sunken tennis court, which is adjacent to the guesthouse. “I am often stopped on

the street by former students who say they will never forget it,” Jean said. Casey, who turns 81 this month, continues to work on syndicated radio shows that spin off the “American Top 40” brand. He has voiced the character Shaggy, among others, on the “Scooby-Doo” series and videos. Jean has appeared on “Cheers” and “The Tortellis,” among other shows and movies, and runs a baby crib business. Recently, she asked Casey how he viewed himself looking back on his life and career. His reply: “I’m just the guy next door.” The couple is ready to move on now that their daughter Liberty, 21, is leaving the nest. “It will be easy to sell because it’s a big house for two people,” Jean said. They plan to downsize or perhaps move to the beach. “We’ve tried to make memories here,” Jean said, “because in the end, that’s all you have.” Email Lauren Beale at lauren.beale@latimes.com.

Selling old clothes on consignment isn’t as much work as you think Scripps Howard News SErvice

t’s time. Time to purge your closet (and your kids’ closets) of all those clothes that simply aren’t worn anymore. However, rather than doing the usual closet whip-through and then dropping off an overstuffed garbage bag of clothes at Goodwill or another charity, consider an option that will both streamline your closet and improve your finances: Selling items on consignment. Worried that it would take too much work? Think again. Here’s what you need to know to

I WILMINGTON STAR-NEWS/FILE

A consignment store that focuses on a particular clientele might pay more for what you have.

unlock the liquidity hiding in rarely worn frocks. 1: Sort your possessions into three piles. Pile 1 is for the clothes you want to keep. Pile 2 is for well-worn items that you will either give to charity or, if beyond repair, toss. And pile 3 is for pieces in good condition that you think others would find appealing. (Hint: Designer clothes always do well at consignment stores.) 2: Review your items with a highly critical eye. Being honest with yourself about the condition of clothing will save time in the end, as the staff at the consign-

ment store is going to be doing the same. It also will make a good first impression if you bring in items that are in pretty decent condition. 3: Get familiar with consignment stores in your area. Depending on the type of items you’re looking to sell (such as women’s, children’s, etc.), a consignment store that focuses on a particular clientele might pay more for what you have. It also is more likely to sell your clothes, as they bring in the right kind of customers for those items. 4: Visit the consignment store.

It’s always a good idea to check out the store (or stores) you’re thinking about working with. When you stop in, pay attention to the prices and try to get a feel for what sells well. If you can, talk to employees, as they know what sells and the proper pricing for what you have to offer. 5: Ask questions. It’s important to understand what is required of and owed to you as a seller. Know what percentage of the sale price you will receive, and find out what fees you’re responsible for. Also, keep track of the items up for sale, and cross them off

your list as each one finds a buyer. 6: Mark your calendar. Keep track of when the selling period is going to end, and be ready to pick up the items that don’t sell. 7: Be season-savvy. Though it’s tempting to try and sell bulky winter clothing right now, it’s actually the perfect time to bring in spring and summer items, as that’s exactly what will be in demand now. Wait until autumn to bring in fall and winter items. Please send ideas and questions to yourlife@getbuttonedup.com or visit www.getbuttonedup.com.

SAMUEL: Lichens are

another problem commonly found in the landscape Continued from 4H needs. Sometimes the tree can become so heavily laden with Spanish moss that limbs eventually break. Can you imagine how much work would be involved in removing all that Spanish moss from the oak trees in Marion County? Before getting to the end of Highway 475, she would probably have to start all over again. If you have Spanish moss on your trees, try to determine the cause of the decline or stress. Trees and shrubs can become stressed due to lack of, or too much, water, compaction of the soil in the drip line of the tree (the area in which the roots extend), poor fertility or even insect or disease problems. Identify and remove the source of the stress, and try to nurture your tree back to health with a proper water and fertilizer regimen. If you have small trees and shrubs, remove as much of the Spanish moss as you possibly can. A number of copperbased herbicides and fungicides are available on the market that can be used to spray the trees. Always read and follow the directions on the pesticide label. For more information on Spanish moss, visit http://polkhort.ifas.ufl.edu/documents/publications/ Ball%20moss.pdf.

The lichen anchors itself on the plant and appears as a greyish-green, crusty growth or hairy structure growing on the tree or shrub. Another problem that is very common in the landscape is lichens growing on the trunks and branches of trees and shrubs. Lichen is a plant with an alga and fungus growing together. The lichen anchors itself on the plant and appears as a greyish-green, crusty growth or hairy structure growing on the tree or shrub. Like Spanish moss, lichens do not harm the tree, but are very unsightly. It also is an indication that the plant has been stressed, so identify and remove the source of the stress. Lichens can be removed with a stiff-bristled brush, if desired. Otherwise, no control is necessary. Now that I’ve whetted your appetite for gardening knowledge, contact the UF/IFAS Extension office near you for a list of upcoming educational opportunities. BIG SUN HOMES STYLE AT HOME

Four little touches that go a long way Scripps Howard News Service

hose of us who love interior decorating are passionate about creating an environment in our homes that is warm and welcoming, fills our senses and reflects who we are. Even though my personal decorating style is ever-evolving, there are a few cornerstones of the look I love. Here are four simple techniques I use. I hope they will inspire you, too. 1. Tuck natural objects into displays. I am not an outdoorsy girl. You won’t find me backpacking in the mountains or kayaking down a river. But spending a quiet moment in my courtyard fills me with peace and inspiration. So I always weave pieces of the natural world into my year-round decorating. I like how this little nod to nature gives my decor a natural, organic feel. One of my favorite icons is a bird’s nest. So I use lots of faux and real nests in my own decorating. Sometimes you’ll find them perched discreetly in the branches of a floral arrangement on my table, or on top of a candlestick on my mantel. Another thought: Placing little faux nests under cloches on place settings of a dining table decorated for spring entertaining. Or welcome Mother Nature into your decor by using flowers in decorating. A messy bouquet of faux tulips doesn’t feel fixed and fussy. You could replicate the look with just about anything in your garden: branches of forsythia, dogwood or red buds, a compote holding a tight mound of hyacinths or hydrangeas, or a cluster of little vases that each contains a single daffodil. Weaving natural elements into your decor doesn’t need to take much time. For one stunning centerpiece, we just ringed a lovely blue-and-white jar with a fern wreath. The wreath adds color and a bit of wild excitement to a very elegant tablescape.

These moss balls are organic and earthy, yet structural, giving this table a pop of bright color and an injection of fun. I am crazy about moss balls right now. These cuties are organic and earthy, yet structural, giving a tableau a pop of bright color and an injection of fun. Plus, they are foolproof to use. Just toss a jumble into a cachepot and stick it on a table for a quick display. Or crown a cluster of little urns with an assortment of moss balls. Group them together on a tray, and you’ve got a killer display in minutes. 2. Add layers for visual interest. Couple several decorative elements together to create one harmonious, intricate scene. The number of layers is up to you. One place to bring in beautiful layers is on your sofa. Toss a summer quilt over the back or arm for added texture and pattern. Then, accessorize with an intriguing mix of pillows. The most striking bedding ensembles are those that are rich with layers. Fresh white sheets covered with a duvet, capped by a contrasting quilt folded at the bottom, are the foundation. The finish is an eyecatching assortment of pillows, starting with a line of Euro shams at the back, fronted by standard pillows, then a sprinkling of special shapes, like neck rolls and lumbar pillows and squares. 3. Work in whimsy.

Sometimes, we just take ourselves a little too seriously, don’t we? One way to lighten our mood, and the look of home decor, is to tuck in whimsical objects that make us smile. The bar in a good friend’s formal living room is very elegant, until you look a bit closer. The feet of the fancy silver tray holding the bar service are just that — feet! What a hoot! I also get a kick out of a planter of the garden goddess, with plants growing out of her head, making one crazy hair-do. I really like to decorate with figurines. Depending upon their size, you can weave them into grand or petite displays, using them as the focal point or as a little surprise to reward the careful viewer. 4. Find creative uses for decorative elements. One favorite plan of attack is to use accents in unusual ways to solve daily decorating dilemmas, like how to keep your books from falling over in your bookcase. Consider using a lamp and an architectural element to sandwich a stack of books. Presto! A layered display. Mary Carol Garrity is the founder of Nell Hill’s, a home décor store in Atchison, Kan. PLUMBING

Kitchen-faucet choices out of the mainstream Insulating ductwork Scripps Howard News Service Scripps Howard News Service

Q:

a regular reader of Q:As your column, I enjoy it

when you make plumbingfixture suggestions that the non-plumbers among us may have overlooked. I’m planning a moderate kitchen update to include a new kitchen faucet. I have seen the pull-out-style spray faucets and the single- and two-handle kitchen faucets, but I want something a little different from the standard choices. Any other suggestions? Today’s kitchens have evolved into “entertainment” areas for many homes, and the choices for kitchen faucets have expanded to keep up with demand. I always say that a nice faucet can set the tone for a kitchen. Also, every morning when you wake up to make coffee, you’re greeted by the kitchen faucet. So a user-friendly kitchen faucet can set the tone for your entire day. With that said, here are three

ED DEL GRANDE

A:

I had a home-energy analysis. The report said my ductwork needs to be repaired upstairs and in the crawlspace because that is where a good deal of leakage is and also is bringing bad air pollutants from my crawlspace into my home. It’s been recommended that repairs be made with either mastic and tape, or foam, which is more expensive ($2,500). What should I do? When the ductwork is located in an attic or crawlspace, it is important to seal the ducts at every joint and seam. The air you are losing has either been heated or cooled at your expense. What you are asking is: “Will the repairs save energy dollars?” And the answer is yes. Sealing the ducts also is a comfort issue in that all the air being forced through the ducts by the furnace fan will eventually reach each room that has a register. Use either the metallic tape or the duct mastic recommended by the contractor. Traditional

A “user-friendly” kitchen faucet can set the tone for your entire day. lesser-known kitchen-faucet options: 1. FAUCET FAMILIES: Some companies offer kitchen faucets in two sizes, a standard size for the main kitchen sink, and an exact copy in a smaller size for the island or beverage sink. This is a very nice look since the two faucets work together to underline your kitchen style choices. 2. WALL-MOUNT: Believe it or

not, some kitchen faucets are still available in the old-fashioned wall-mount style. This can be a great choice for a country kitchen or if you are doing a remodel job in an older home. Just make sure you choose a sink that works with wall-mount faucets. 3. COLD-FILTERED: This is a kitchen faucet with a built-in valve that provides cold filtered drinking water on demand. This

feature can eliminate additional filtering equipment, giving your kitchen an uncluttered look. Now, that’s what you call a kitchen faucet that cleans up after itself! Contact master contractor/plumber Ed Del Grande at eddelgrande. com or write eddelgrande@hgtvpro.com. Always consult local contractors and codes.

duct tape does not work well on ductwork. You can do this repair yourself if close, confined spaces such as the attic and crawlspace do not cause you any problems. It’s simply a matter of cleaning each surface area to be sealed before applying the tape or mastic. The costs of the material, usually less than $200, will be minimal to the savings you can expect. In the attic and crawlspace, you can insulate the duct using a fire-resistant fiberglass insulation with a reflective foil cover. The foam, while expensive, will both insulate and air seal the ducts, taking the place of the tape or mastic.

101 IDEAS

Organize your linen closet: Do you really need four sets of sheets for each bed? Scripps Howard News Service

ost people have a closet that’s designated for linens, but many use it as a catchall space for all their junk instead. If you don’t want to use up a closet just for linens, use an armoire instead. To begin, empty out the

M

space completely. Once it’s empty, sweep, dust or wipe down the shelving and spray the space with a natural linen mist. This gives a blank canvas to create a functional linen closet. Once everything is removed and clean, begin sorting and purging. If you don’t purge, in no

time your closet will look the same as it did before. Use four baskets when sorting: keep, donate, trash and move. Only keep what you intend to use. Do you need four sets of sheets for each bed? Do you need 15 pillowcases? Commit to purging unused clutter. When organizing, use

baskets to categorize and place your items. Label and pin tags to them according to your personal needs. To keep things more organized, designate a basket for each family member and place their sheets, pillowcases and towels in them. If your family shares bedding, label by size.

Line up your baskets and place like items together. Once you are finished separating and organizing, place your baskets in the closet. If you won’t be using baskets, line up your sets of linens with like items together on labeled shelving. Spray the linens once

again. The key to keeping your linen closet organized is maintenance. Straighten on a daily basis, and always place freshly laundered items back into the correct basket or space. For thousands of other ideas, visit www.hgtv. com.

Go low-cost but bold with rental landscaping Even the smallest spaces can be rewarding when transformed with these ideas. Scripps Howard News Service

o long as there’s a backyard outside your rental house, the door is open to creating affordable outdoor living spaces. Many rental homes lack backyard landscaping or it’s dull and doesn’t reflect any personal style. To create a wonderful space in just one or two weekends, consider tips from the Small Budget Gardener for revamping your yard and adding comfortable summer-living areas outdoors. To get the most from your efforts, focus on two equally important factors: First, make low-cost choices. Second, choose portable items, so you can take them to your next house. The most affordable patio makers are plain concrete squares known as “steppers.” The smallest ones are about 1 foot

S

square and 2 inches thick and run about a dollar or so apiece. Larger 2-foot sizes can run about $3 each. Use them to create a new patio for less than $100. If you look at contemporary high-end landscapes, you’ll discover that those folks prefer to use nearly identical units to create greener porous paving areas. The steppers can be set edge to edge, or leave a gap for decorative gravel, grass or groundcover. Create a fire pit for about the same amount of money using antiquelooking concrete block tumbled in giant drums to make them look old. All over Pinterest are examples of how to create a fire pit by stacking these blocks just so. Some repurpose old washingmachine drums to hold the fire, surrounded by dry walls of block. Their weight is such that stacked creations don’t need a foundation or mortar.

Ordinary dog-ear board fencing treated with watered-down latex or blue stain will recede into a pleasant background.

When it comes time to move, just unstack, load up and go. Do not overlook paint and stain. They can turn worn-out wood fences or sheds into something truly delightful. Often, fencing at rentals is a hodgepodge of wooden slats, but a can of stain can unify the spans via subtle color. Water down latex paint to make it more like stain in your favorite color. Or if you’re looking for a lovely cottage garden, use whitewash to transform an everyday look into a clean and tidy background. A wall trellis is easy to make with scrap twigs — or simply buy a cheap wood and paint it. Some gardeners are recycling old screen doors, metal bedsteads and sections of old wrought-iron fencing for wall treillage, too. These flat panels stand against walls to allow vines to climb up for a beautiful vertical garden. Best of all, you can simply detach the trellis and take it with you. Big annual plants are always the best choice for rentals. You can grow them from seed or buy them in low-cost six packs to make your summer-living spaces look nestled into the landscape. The most powerful plants are big, burly sunflowers. Use in a patch or row or as a single specimen. Hollyhock is another great choice that leaves you with a whole crop of seeds for next year. Cosmos, foxgloves and all the amaranths are easy-togrow choices. As always, containers are the best way to grow anything more long-lived,

with big plants that will go elsewhere when you do. Learning to garden as a renter is a great way to save money while improv-

ing your lifestyle. Even the smallest spaces can be incredibly rewarding when transformed with these ideas.

f you cup your hand to your ear, you can almost hear the hallelujah chorus being sung by the winter-weary who are glad that spring is here. And with the arrival of spring, you know what that means: It’s time for spring cleaning. But hold on a minute. Before you start pitching things in the trash, rethink how items can be used again and given new life by repurposing, which is basically taking old stuff and giving it a new use. The repurposing trend has taken on a national flavor, with popular HGTV shows underscoring the theme with programs such as “Salvage Dawgs” and “Flea Market Flip.” The Internet also is loaded with ideas about reusing old finds and turning what was formerly trash into treasures. Websites such as Pinterest are loaded with images and ideas for ways to use old goods. “Our volunteers are creative,” said Karen Wicker, manager of Scrap 4 Art in Maumee, Ohio, a nonprofit organization that depends on dona-

pring is in the air and it seems like it is time to fix up the patio if you have one — or create one if you don’t. After all, the patio is a great outdoor space that can be used for relaxing, for eating, for parties — for just about anything springy or summery. So let’s check out how to create that space and make it look good. If you don’t already have a patio, delegate a space that will be designated “the patio.” Separate it from the rest of the backyard somehow. One way is with stone slabs, pavers or a wood deck. You should surround the patio with short bushes or plants or simply let the edge of the flooring meet the grass. Placing potted greenery and/or flowers will decorate the patio space nicely. The pots should be of varying sizes and heights for visual interest. For cool nights, an outdoor fire pit is great on the patio. If space and money permit, a built brick fireplace is ideal. The sound of water is always calming. So again, if space permits, a waterfall or water fountain would be a nice addition. And for very hot, sunny days, some covering will be welcome. An awning or a great big patio umbrella will do the trick. Outdoor lighting will be necessary in the evening, and there are many light options available, from lanterns to floor lamps. If you are building the space, atmosphere lighting is very nice — such as lights that glow from the ground up. How about some fun ways to light up the patio?

SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE

Scrap 4 Art store manager Karen Wicker holds art work made of toilet-paper rolls. Another use for toilet-paper rolls is to cut the roll the long way, paint and decorate it, then slip it on a roll of wrapping paper to hold it tight. tions from businesses and individuals to keep the store supplied with crafting materials. Teachers, artists, crafters, and church organizations can purchase craft supplies at a discount from Scap 4 Art. “Really neat things are happening. One woman takes zippers and makes pins that you wear as a broach.” So instead of throwing out your toilet-paper rolls,

Crayon curtains are made of cardboard tubes and are for sale at Scrap 4 Art in Maumee, Ohio.

keep them, Wicker suggests. Cut the roll the long way, paint and decorate it, then slip it on a roll of wrapping paper to hold it tight. And as ties accumulate in Father’s and Grandfather’s dress wardrobes through the years, getting rid of some of them doesn’t mean putting them in the trash. “We have purses made from ties,” Wicker said. “We have aprons and other purses made from fabrics that fabric stores give us.” Replacing a door? Don’t put it out for special pickup. Consider using it to make a table. And if you’re replacing kitchen cabinets, there are other ways to reuse the doors. For example, replace the middle with a chalkboard and make it a household message center. Or hang one of the doors in the bedroom to use for necklaces, bracelets, scarves and other acces-

sories. When repurposing, paint and sandpaper are your friends. Refinishing and polyurethane are, too, especially when dealing with furniture. Painting an old cabinet door a vibrant color gives a jolt of newness that’s bound to spur on more projects. Spray paint is a quick way to get a job done, but don’t rule out using a brush or roller when that works better. And it’s a labor of love when going over a piece of wood furniture with sandpaper. Of course, making old items look brand new isn’t always preferred. Sometimes leaving an item looking weathered by time — with that chipped and worn-paint look, for example — is just as intriguing. However, be sure to repair whatever could cause injuries. You don’t want splinters jutting out from wood items.

Consider strings of lights for a romantic or festive look. For romantic, make them a soft white. For festive, make them colorful. There are always those tiki torches around the perimeter for a definite casual summer feel. On the tables, you can use candles for light. As far as furniture is concerned, your personal taste and comfort will rule. Bistro tables with chairs will work nicely for eating and for entertaining. Chairs and loungers are a must for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Be sure all the furniture is comfortable. Cushions on chairs and loungers are great, but remember to bring the cushions in when there are heavy rains. Yes, the outdoor furniture cushions are meant to withstand the elements, but they will get moldy if not taken care of. Do you have space for small outdoor sofas? Great! Add some accessory tables and a couple of large, comfortable side chairs. Privacy always is important. To block your outdoor patio from neighbors’ views, tall plants or trees will work. Another idea is a trellis with flowering plants growing on it. This will give privacy and color to the space.
