Weather to blame for azaleas’ poor show year, my azaleas Q:This weren’t as beautiful as in

years past. The flowers didn’t all bloom at the same time, and, when they did, there were brown spots on the flowers and they sort of melted. What happened? Azaleas are a Southern favorite and standard in most North Central Florida gardens. The old-fashioned Southern indica azaleas are “one-hit wonders” and normally put on a beautiful show in late February to early March. This year, the weather delayed the bloom by about two weeks, and many of the cultivars, like Formosa, George L. Taber, Mrs. G. G. Gerbing and Southern Charm, didn’t bloom in unison. More consistent temperatures next year should get them to flower at the same time. The spots on the blooms are another problem called petal blight. It is caused by a fungus, and also is referred to as Ovulinia petal blight. It only damages the flowers. It is worse in years we have wet, cool weather during the flowering period. The symptoms start as pale or white spots on the flower petals. The spots enlarge quickly and then the blossom collapses and

Master painter gets master makeover with ensuite bath ernie has been a member of my crew for years. He’s a meticulous master painter who has come through for me on more projects than I can count. When he and his wife, Christy, decided it was time to renovate their master bedroom ensuite bath, I was delighted to help out. Along with a stunning new bathroom, I also decided to give Christy and Bernie the gift of a bedroom makeover that hit all the high notes: a custom headboard; a fresh coat of paint for the dresser; an elegant new ceiling light fixture; and, of course, new bedding.

Throughout this bathroom, we added in a lot of luxurious little touches to really bring out that spa feeling, including heated floors and towel racks. A large cast-iron soaker tub was installed in one corner, and a beaded curtain, reminiscent of a waterfall, hangs along the far wall. We had a lot of space to work with, but it wasn’t very well planned. The bedroom was huge, but the bathroom had a very choppy layout — including a closet, vanity and separate room with tub, shower and toilet. It was so dysfunctional, in fact, that it was hardly ever used. Well ... hardly ever used for bathing, that is. The shower stall actually made a very handy linen closet, once some shelving was added! After renovating the rest of the house, it was time for Christy and Bernie to do

something just for them. My plan called for some very big changes to this master bedroom and ensuite bathroom. By relocating the closet into the bedroom, we were able to accommodate a large glassenclosed shower stall, a repositioned toilet and a single vanity (for Bernie). On the other side of the room, we installed a large cast iron soaker tub, which was high on Christy’s wish list, as well as another single vanity just for her, and a corner

WILBER: Cutworm caterpillar the conniving culprit in vegetable garden Continued from 4H is slimy. The fungal spore germination occurs when temperatures are in the mid-60s with mist and fog. The pathogen can persist through the rest of the year as a small, compact mass of the fungal strands (sclerotia) in the fallen diseased flowers, or lying on the mulch below. When the flowers start to form in the spring, spores germinate and infect the flower. The best thing you can do to break the cycle is to rake up the spent flowers

from under the shrub, and consider replacing the mulch, if possible. Use of fungicides is not normally recommended because you can control the disease with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) by removing the flowers and replacing the mulch. My new eggplant and pepper seedlings that I just planted have been snapped off 1 to 2 inches above the ground. What is doing this, and how can I stop it? It is more than likely a cutworm caterpillar that is nibbling and snipping off the tops of your young seedlings. These are brown or green plump caterpillars that hide in the garden soil. If you touch one,

it would curl into a “C” shape. Normally, we don’t see them because they eat at night. They mow down seedlings at about soil level. On older plants, you might see channels or scars on the stems. The best way to deal with them is to make a cutworm collar. Take a cardboard tube from a paper towel roll and cut it into 2-inch tall rings. Place these cylinders around each small seedling directly on the ground with the seedling in the center. Cutworms usually won’t climb

over these barriers. Also, crop rotation will help to keep populations down. Some of my farming friends say that letting the chickens scratch through the garden at the end of the season helps to keep caterpillar populations down. 2014 PRESIDENT OCALA/MARION COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® March has proven to be one of the busiest months year over year. The Florida weather offers up some of her best during the spring months for Florida residents and visitors alike. Now that spring break is over for us southern folks it is time to get back to business. On March 19th we had the opportunity to participate in Great American Realtor Days in Tallahassee as we do every year at this time. We had over 50 Realtors from Marion County attend to discuss the topics that are urgent to help facilitate the Florida real estate recovery. One topic that has pushed its way to the forefront is sales tax charged on commercial leases. Florida is the only state in the country that charges sales tax on commercial leases and the only other municipality that charges sales tax on commercial leases is New York City and they only charge it on leases over a certain amount. So I don’t know about you but sharing this in common with New York City is not a high honor in my opinion. There is currently a bill in both the house and senate that would at least reduce it from the current 6% to 5%. We were told of a 500 million dollar surplus in the current budget and that there was a common consensus that 400 million of that would be used to reduce tag and registration fees so more of Florida's residents would be able to take advantage of some tax savings, which would be great, and the other 100 million would hopefully be sliced and diced to hopefully provide some sales tax relief on the commercial leases. One of the other hot topics of the trip was the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program). Since the passing of the Biggert-Waters act and the implementation of this law some Florida residents have experienced insurance premium increases of almost 1000% in some cases in coastal areas. The fact is that Florida residents pay in nearly $4.00 for every $1.00 of NFIP claims paid out to our state and the Florida Realtors have chosen this as a top priority to address. Though I am what you would call an eternal optimist I do realize that some hurricane seasons, 2004 comes to mind, cause far greater damage than others so there has to be some money set aside somewhere to handle these catastrophic events. But how do we balance this without bashing some Florida residents with these astronomical increases. There are a lot of great ideas to help alleviate some of the burden so I will let you know as soon as I get word on what has been done. There were several other issues on the agenda that day and I will happily share them with you in the future. I will keep you updated on the progress of the above mentioned issues as they are addressed. So as the school year winds down and summer plans start getting made remember to be safe and spend time with family and friends. The country French chateau is reached by a winding driveway that ends at a cobblestone motor court. Adding to the Old World ambience created by architect Brady Richard Landry is a moat-like koi pond that meanders alongside the mansion. The limestone-clad house incorporates reclaimed ceiling beams, salvaged tile, antique doors and marble fireplace surrounds. The 13,890 square feet of living space Bundchen includes a center hall, a den, a library/study, a gym, a sauna, five bedrooms and nine bathrooms. There are seven fireplaces. The four acres of grounds contain waterfalls, ponds, an infinity pool, lawns, gardens and pathways. A gray-water system is used for irrigation. Solar panels supply the home’s electricity. Brady bought the property for $11.75 million the year before his 2009 marriage to Bundchen. They spent about four years developing it for use as their off-season retreat.

decided to wash my car, but there was no pressure to the hose. When I removed the hose from the faucet, I noticed the water flow was just fine. Can you tell me what the problem might be? While doing home inspections this winter, I found several hose faucets damaged because the hose was left connected to the faucet. Depending on the age of the home, the faucet is most likely a frost-proof faucet, but it’s only “frost proof” if it is allowed to drain during the freezing weather. When a hose is left attached to the faucet, water remains in the hollow pipe that connects the outside handle to the shut-off valve, which is located inside the warmer areas of the home. As the trapped water freezes inside the pipe, it expands splitting the walls of the copper pipe. When you first turn the faucet on, the water seems to flow freely, but what you don’t see is the small amount of water that is leaking through the damaged pipe to the inside of the foundation. When you try to use your hose, the pressure drops because you only are getting a small amount

An easy way to determine if a faucet is damaged is to try and stop the flow of water from the faucet by using your thumb as a stopper. Place your thumb over the faucet opening and slowly turn the faucet on. You should not be able to stop the flow of water. If you can, then the entire frost-proof faucet will need to be replaced. The fittings in the basement or crawl space most likely have been soldered together using a blowtorch. This repair would best be left to a professional plumber because: 1. It’s extremely difficult to solder a wet pipe and 2. Using a blowtorch near the wood floor system can cause a fire.

It’s super inexpensive, has wonderful lines and comes in just about every color imaginable, making it a great go-to pick if you want to pull together a killer display in a jiff. Arresting accent lamps are one of my many addictions. I think of lamps like artwork, an ideal way to add individual character to a space and make it feel “finished.” Turquoise lamps don’t even have to be on to brighten up a space. CREATE BLUE RHAPSODY ON THE TABLE: Turquoise is perfect for spring and summer entertaining because it radiates cheer like a cloudless sky. To make your table a celebration of spring, we started with a blue table topper. Our topper doesn’t really match the dishes on our table, and that’s OK. In fact, it’s preferable, in my opinion. The red tones in our china explode next to the turquoise cloth. You can take things a step further by covering your table in a stunning tablecloth. BED TIME BLUES: Because this flexible tone looks great with everything from brown, gray and yellow to coral and apple green, it is easy to add turquoise to your existing bedding to give it a new lease on life or to throw into the mix if you are designing a new bed. Heated floors and towel racks, plush new bathrobes, monogrammed Turkish towels, French soaps and linen sprays complete Christy and Bernie’s new retreat. A beaded curtain, reminiscent of a waterfall, hangs along the far wall — just one more little extra in a bathroom that packs a big punch of style. Moving into the bedroom, we built a bank of closets with lots of storage underneath. Mirrored cabinet doors reflect light and contribute to the room’s airy, spacious feeling. We painted Christy and Bernie’s existing dresser with pewter paint and added some new crystal hardware with a touch of sparkle. The king-sized bed got the royal treatment with the addition of a custom fabric headboard, complete with brushed nickel nailhead trim. New bedding in restful neutral tones is complemented by pewter and cream throw cushions, and a pair of floor-

length mirrors reflects the room’s beauty and classic elegance. We brightened up Christy and Bernie’s bedroom with recessed lighting and a stunning semi-flush mounted chandelier, with matching sconces on each side of the bed. A pair of ivory chairs matches readymade drapes, to complete the transformation from big and basic to relaxing and restful. Every inch of this master bedroom and ensuite bath has been planned out to maximize the existing space. By taking away half of the double door that used to lead into the bathroom, we’ve gained not just a spacious bedroom, but an impressive bath as well. Gone is the choppy layout and in its place is a spacious oasis of luxury and peace. Bernie and Christy may never come out. But wait ... what happens when I need him for the next job?
