coating my car and our deck. Which trees is it coming from, and is there anything we can do? It seems that we go directly from winter season to pollen season within just a few days. I noticed on the news that the pollen index is considered very high for our area, and it probably will be for the next several weeks. If you have strong pollen allergies, you may already be hiding indoors and upping your allergy medication. The pines and the oak trees are the main culprits in our urban forest that are producing all the pollen. These trees are windpollenated, and are known to produce copious amounts of pollen that can travel as far as three miles or more under the right conditions. Pollen quantities will vary from one tree to the next, and

Living room makeover combines bling with a big screen

lmost two years ago, Mary Grace and Manesh moved from a condo into a house. As you might expect, they didn’t have enough furniture to go around. Their living room was bare, and has stayed that way all this time, because the two of them had very different visions of how they’d like to finish it off. Manesh’s wishes weren’t all that complicated. In a nutshell, all he really wanted was a big TV and a comfortable place to relax. Mary Grace wanted a room built for entertaining — her style is definitely sophisticated comfort with a bit of built-in bling. The challenge was to take this blank canvas of a room and turn it into the social center of the home, combining Manesh’s recipe for comfort with Mary Grace’s sense of style.

We were able to keep some elements of the existing living room, including the floor and window shutters. Working from the top down, we scraped off the old popcorn ceiling and installed new recessed lighting to brighten things up. When it comes to providing comfort and a lot of seating, you can’t beat a sectional sofa. We selected an Lshaped model and positioned it to face a new built-in media center, containing — you guessed it — Manesh’s TV. I do not think it was made as a household piece of furniture, but rather, perhaps, for a commercial application for a theater or hotel lobby. is called a “marbleized black,” or simply a “black” among collectors. They were copies of the French Empire-style black-marble mantle clocks made during the 19th century. The American clock cases were made of wood covered with painted paper that looked like marble. The word used was “adamantine,” meaning rigid or unyielding, and was guaranteed to last a long time. On French marble clocks, all the decorative metal parts were made of gilt bronze. The metal mounts on your clock are made of white metal with a finish simulating the look of gilt bronze. These clocks were manufactured by most of the large American clock companies in massive quantities, and up until a few years ago, were of little interest. Currently, they are moving up the totem pole of collector interest. In good-toexcellent condition, t they sell in the $150 to $ $300 range.

To add the perfect finishing touch, we installed hardware with just a touch of bling — providing a bit of shine just for Mary Grace. Beside the bar is a cozy lounge area, complete with two stylish armless chairs flanking a glass cocktail table. And, in addition to those chairs and the sofa, there are lots of other flexible seating options in this space. Two

ottomans are positioned in front of the fireplace, ready to be drawn up into the conversational circle. A front hall bench also provides even more seating when Mary Grace and Manesh are entertaining a large group. It will take just a minute to reposition these pieces to accommodate guests, and they can be tucked back in place when they’re not needed. Mary Grace and Manesh love to travel, and they’ve accumulated quite a collection of photos. To inject this space with their personality, I decided to create a

special gallery wall using custom molding to frame sections of elegant grasscloth wallpaper. The wall covering is shimmery, but also natural and classic, and it provides the perfect backdrop to their treasured travel photos. This is the wall you see as soon as you come into the house, so it was important to add that personal touch. Finally, we painted the wooden spindles on the staircase the same color that we used on the cabinetry, helping to pull it all together. There’s no doubt this is a finicky job, but one that is well

worth the effort. It’s always a delicate balance when one half of a couple wants glitz and glamour, and the other half just wants, well, a big-screen TV and a remote with good batteries! In this case, though, Mary Grace and Manesh agreed on one thing: They wanted a living room that felt familiar and welcoming — a space perfect for entertaining larger groups and equally functional for those quiet movie nights. We struck a good balance with this project by incorporating elegant touches — such as the

fireplace, the mirrored glass, and the shimmery wallpaper — with comfort pieces, such as the sofa and the familiar travel photos. It’s a wonderful place to come home to, but it’s also a welcoming place to visit. I have a feeling Mary Grace and Manesh’s new living room will become the gathering place of choice for their circle of friends. Rain dampens the pollen and prevents it from flying in the air. Cold weather can slow pollen production and windy dry weather keeps the pollen flowing all over town. A survey done by the University of Florida Forestry department found that trees most likely to produce a high amount of pollen in the Gainesville area are laurel and water oaks, loblolly and slash pines, as well as sweet gums and cherry laurels. If you are negatively impacted on days with high pollen counts, you can use a few strategies to stay more comfortable. Restrict your outdoor activities during days with high winds and low humidity. Shower after spending time outdoors to remove pollen from your hair and skin. Don’t use trees that have a high pollen count in your landscape; trees like magnolia, tulip poplar and red maple would be better choices. Last spring, we planted a few canes of sugarcane just to see if it would grow. It grew really well and we love it as an ornamental grass. But is has died back in the freezes. Will it come back, and should we prune the dead canes off?

Sugarcane is both ornamental and edible. Sugarcane grows really well in North Central Florida. It was often grown in the homesteads of early settlers for cane syrup and as a sweetener. Normally, the canes are harvested in late November to early December before a hard freeze kills them back. The roots are perennial, and soon new shoots will appear at the base of the old ones. It is fine to prune the old canes off once the temperatures warm up. Fertilize the cane patch with a balanced fertilizer like 8-8-8 at least once during the growing season. Irrigate one to two times a week to provide about 1 inch of water. You will grow an ornamental and edible grass that is beautiful to look at and sweet to eat. ant some instant decorating gratification? Pop open a can of paint. Inside this little silver treasure box is the power to transform a room in a jiff. Dollarfor-dollar, there is no more cost effective decorating tool, and with a few swipes of a brush in some strategic spots, you can give a room new life. Here are four fabulous spots to unleash the power of paint in your home: 1. PAINT YOUR CEILING: When I was growing up my mom made our kitchen groovy by hanging funky flower power wallpaper on our kitchen ceiling that was emblazoned with avocado and gold daisies. While I’m not suggesting you turn your kitchen ceiling into a ’70s throwback, I do want to plant the idea that your ceiling is an often-overlooked but powerful place to add a jolt of color. Keeping the walls white calms the room, then — ka-pow! — a colorful ceiling gives it oodles of personality. (Tip for moms whose daughters want to paint their rooms an eye-searing shade of orange, green, pink or blue: compromise by painting the ceiling.) Painted ceilings don’t have to be covered in high-contrast colors. When I visited Earnest Hemingway’s home in Key West a few years ago, I was agog at the ceilings

Want to add a punch of color, but in an unexpected way? Try adding that color to the ceiling — and keeping the walls neutral. that were painted robin’s egg blue. They said it was to thwart wasps from building their nests. But I fell in love with the concept as a decorating tool. My kitchen and porch ceilings are both painted a light blue. But I didn’t stop there, because you all know as well as I do that once you start painting things it’s hard to stop. Next, I painted the ceiling of my twilightblue dining room khaki. 2. PAINT YOUR FURNITURE: Are you a DIY fan? Do you spend every free second on Pinterest? Then you know how much fun it is to give tired furniture a brand new look. If you have a vintage or antique piece of furniture that is just not calling your name anymore, give it a new lease on life with a coat of paint. My friend Anne protected her wooden coffee table with paint so it could weather the elements on her covered

patio. Ask the folks at your paint store for recommendations on procedures and products for the best results. Hate to paint? Buy a piece of painted furniture. And painted furniture doesn’t have to be funky. It also can be so, so sophisticated. 3. PAINT YOUR WALLS: If you want to give a room a complete personality change, cover the walls in a vibrant new color. Julie infused her kitchen with lots of energy when she painted it Shuttered Window, a go-with-anything emerald green from my Mary Carol Artisan Paint line. Love it! Paint also can make a room moody and dramatic. My friend Anne’s dining room is painted a warm, wonderful gray. I like dining rooms that are painted deep colors. The walls don’t always have to be the star of the show. In Beth’s home, the focal point is the furnish-

ings. So she painted her walls a light cream, which provide a warm backdrop for the room’s stunning architecture, artwork and furnishings. 4. PAINT A DOOR: This is my new thing: Painting doors a deep, rich, shiny black. A few years ago, when I was staying at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago, I was swept away by the sophisticated look of the grand piano black guestroom doors against the creamy white trim. I came home and started painting all the doors in my home black. This high-contrast effect turns doors into focal points. I consider myself a novice DIY repairman, but plumbing repairs drive me crazy. I never have the right parts and have to return to the supply store more than once. I have a toilet that keeps making a swooshing noise like it is refilling the tank. I replaced the “flapper” valve inside the tank thinking it was leaking water, but that did not help. I have adjusted the float on the refill valve, but that has not helped either. Any ideas? What do I need to make the repairs in one trip to the store? Timely question because Fix a Leak Week is celebrated every year in March. The first thing to check is the flapper valve that sets in an opening in the bottom of the tank. Most of the time, replacing the valve will stop the leak. However, over time the rim of the opening where the refill valve sits can form a crust of minerals that prevents the rubber from sealing properly. To see if this is the problem, shut off the water supply to the toilet. If there is no shut-off valve at the supply pipe, either install one yourself or have one installed by a licensed plumber. With the water off, add a dark colored food dye to the water in the tank. Wait a few minutes to see if the dye seeps to the toilet bowl. If the dye shows up in the bowl, then the flapper valve is not seating and you’re wasting money on a silent leak. Remove the flapper valve and clean the open rim of the toilet tank using a knife, file, sandpaper or

any combination of the three. Reinstall the flapper valve and try again. If the dye does not seep in to the bowl and you still hear the noise, then you need to replace the tower or the refill system inside the tank. What is happening is the refill valve is still running after the tank is filled to a preset level. The water leaking from the refill valve may cause a “swoosh,” or the water may silently leak to the bowl as the water levels exceed the height of the overflow pipe. Most home and hardware stores carry the toilet towers and floats and other replacement parts for toilets. Most tower packages contain the tower that controls the refilling of the tank, a rubber gasket to seal the base of the tower inside the tank, a lock nut to secure the tower to the tank and a coupling nut to connect the water supply pipe to the tower. I would recommend you also purchase a universal toilet connection kit that contains a flexible metal supply pipe and three different-sized connecting nuts to convert any size of water supply pipe in the bathroom to the more common 3/8-inch threaded male fitting.
