Protecting plants during cold weather of my plants, like Q:Several hibiscus, ginger and pentas,

were burned back during the freeze. What should I do now? Should I prune them back or pull them up? The cold temperatures of January can burn back some of our favorite plants in North Central Florida. We recommend covering these plants with frost cloths or fabric that extends all the way to the ground. If it is going to be windy as well as cold, you should weight the clothes down so they do not blow off. Tropical and subtropical plants such as hibiscus and pentas should be covered when temperatures drop below 32 degrees. Plants like citrus and cold-weather vegetable crops (broccoli and collards) can stand temperatures slightly lower without protection. But, if it is going to be a “hard freeze” (below 28 degrees for more than five hours), you should protect your citrus and veggies, too. The roots and lower portions of hibiscus, pentas and ginger will more than likely survive freezing temperatures, so pulling them up should not be

This fact speaks volumes about the task at hand: Design a warm, inviting library with room for all of Bob’s books — and even a few more that will surely be added in the future! The focal point of this book lover’s retreat was the fireplace. But, with its outdated mantel and the inconvenience of schlepping real logs upstairs to the library, an update was definitely in order. We selected an elegant

cast-stone fireplace surround, with clean-burning ethanol log set. The difference was dramatic: The new mantel and classic surround elevates the fireplace to the prominence it deserves. To accommodate all of Bob’s “friends,” I designed three walls of custom floor-toceiling shelving around the room. The only wall that does not have shelving is the window wall, so we definitely maximized every possible inch of storage space. The shelving flanks the fireplace, and is unbroken except for the place we reserved for a wall-mounted flat-screen TV.

had to first check in with one of my favorite trendmakers, Holly Blalock, the vice president of merchandise and marketing for CR Laine, and see what she’s loving in 2014. Here’s what Holly says is going to be h-o-t: COBALT BLUE DAZZLES DECOR: Every year, Pantone picks its color of the year, and for 2014, it’s “orchid.” Yow! No disrespect Pantone, but Holly and I agree that you’ve called it wrong this year. I love the use of strong colors and unique shades, but based on what we see at Nell Hill’s as we help people style their homes, I predict that very

few will be getting excited about orchid this coming year. So Holly has picked her own color of the year for 2014: cobalt blue. Yes, yes, yes! I agree! Cobalt caught my fancy this year, too, and I picked this sassy shade for my outdoor cushions this year, edging them in citrine. MUSIC SERVES AS A MUSE: Remember Punk rock? A PARTING WORD: Trends are fun, but stay true to your style: It’s always a blast to thumb through the fashion magazines and see the new styles designers are touting. But that doesn’t mean we toss out our closet full of beautiful clothes each season and refill it with all the trendy pieces, right? The same is true when it comes to interior design trends. I can see five new looks and love them all, but that doesn’t mean they are necessarily right for me and my home. When it comes to embracing interior design trends, here’s my advice: If a new look makes your heart sing, embrace it. If you like your existing decor but want it to stay fresh and new, weave in bits and pieces of a new style you like. If a look leaves you cold, pass it by. Stay true to yourself in all you do. Bob and Alice have travelled extensively, and the library features many of their souvenirs, so the mural is a nice touch to remind them of their happy travels. Over by the windows sit Alice’s two existing tub chairs, recovered in a sparkly black velvet fabric with nailhead trim — just the touch of glam the designer ordered for this book lover’s paradise. Add an inviting ottoman and a small side table and presto — you have a ready-made reading nook. I went with a modern ivory and dark espresso color scheme for this room, which is played out in the richness of the dark shelving, the ivory sectional sofa and fireplace mantel, the drapery fabrics, cushions and area rug. We disposed of the old carpeting and brought in new, dark hardwood flooring that sets off the

ivory walls, couch and area rug beautifully. Oh, and I really need to mention one more thing. What is the No. 1 musthave when it comes to reading? Good lighting, of course! We really bumped up the lighting quotient in this library, with overhead recessed fixtures, sconces and a table lamp. Two wall-mounted lights behind the couch are even on flexible arms, so they can be perfectly positioned as over-the-shoulder reading lamps. Bob loves the fact that his books have become the big story in this space. They wrap the room in comfort and warmth, with the extra-inviting touch of the elegant new fireplace and updated furnishings. It’s a room that caters to the owners’ tastes, while making a stunning impact with the contrast between light and dark hues. lion. The leading man had leased out the oceanfront Cape Cod-inspired property in the summer of 2012 at $150,000 a month. Then about a year ago he put it up for sale at $23 million. The compound contains three recently remodeled homes on less than half an acre. There are a total of seven bedrooms and 6½ bathrooms in an undisclosed number of square feet. Outdoor features include

a beachfacing deck with a transparent guardrail, a spa, a fire pit, gardens and lawn. DiCaprio DiCaprio, 39, starred this year in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Great Gatsby.” Among his other films are “Titanic” (1997), “Inception” (2010) and “J. Edgar” (2011).
