Cabbage aphids a scourge to cole crops collard green plants Q:My were growing really well,

but then I noticed these little bugs down in the crown of the plant. They are a waxy gray color. Are they going to hurt the plant, and what should I do about them? Collards are one of the best vegetables to grow in the fall and winter garden. They are normally easy to grow and have minimal problems. But one of their pests has found your garden plot. What you are describing is the cabbage aphid. This aphid is found on all the cole crops, so just because you are seeing it on the collards doesn’t mean that it won’t hop over to the cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale or mustard greens. Cabbage aphids have a grayish-green waxy coating that makes them look gray and crumbly. They will feed in large clusters at the center of the cabbage heads or down deep into the plant on the youngest leaves. Aphids reproduce rapidly, often by asexual reproduction, meaning that males are not needed, and can have up to 15 generations during the growing season. The feeding damage is toughest on seedlings and young plants. On larger plants,

aura and Mitchell are a creative young couple living in an old house with a new baby. Laura loves to paint and do crafts, and Mitchell likes to tinker with tools. And baby Beatrice? Well, she loves to play with about a zillion baby toys that are scattered throughout their small living room and dining room. Old homes have character, elegance and charm, but there’s one thing they don’t have — storage! I aimed to fix that by creating an eclectic and welcoming living room, alongside a multi-functional dining room that doubles as a studio. The trick to this transformation was reorganizing, repurposing and remaking the space to fit the needs of this busy young family. I started by turning things upside down, so to speak — the living room moved into

the dining room, and vice versa. With the addition of a modern sectional sofa and some of Laura’s repurposed antique furniture pieces, the larger room just inside the front door became an inviting living room where the adults can relax. We gave Laura’s rustic old dry sink a fresh coat of paint; color for this piece was inspired by a custom stone top, transforming this one-of-a-kind piece into a functional media console. On the far wall, we hung a graphic black and white wallpaper with layers of frames sized perfectly for photos or small pieces of artwork — what a fun way for this creative family to personalize this space! A warm color scheme that includes shades of berry reds, golds, greens, cream and brown is picked up in the sofa,

Reorganizing gives new life to living room, studio area rug, throw cushions and custom draperies. A unique glass-topped end table doubles as a display case for small pieces of art, and a narrow wooden trunk serves as a coffee table with storage, while including warmth to this space. New track lighting can be perfectly positioned to shine on Laura’s artwork. Next, we tackled the multi-purpose dining room-slash-studio. This space needed lots of storage options, along with improved lighting and a table that could be dressed up or down, depending on whether it would be used for crafting or for entertaining. We added a functional countertop along under the window, which can double as a work surface or a sideboard. At one end, we positioned an antique factory task lamp, rewired and repurposed to shed light on all of Mitchell’s projects. A bench slides neatly under the counter, but can be pulled out to add

What’s the difference between installing new or adapting to old when it comes to rain head showers? — Steve, Utah Not surprisingly, rain-style shower heads are designed to rain down on the user. So, basically you need to move the head higher and more to the middle of the shower stall to create a raining effect. For new stalls, you can install a short shower arm pipe that sticks out vertically through the ceiling; then you can attach your rain shower head to that threaded pipe. But make sure you have enough ceiling height for this type of installation. If ceiling height is a concern, you can upgrade to a flush-mount rain head. While pricey, flush-mount ceiling heads have no exposed pipes and are easy to clean. For existing shower stalls, to keep the costs down you can simply install a longer shower arm extension pipe on to the existing water connection. Then, mount your shower head to that

ou see her image all over Mexico from taxi rearview mirrors to T-shirts and tattoos. She is Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron of Latin America, celebrated every year on her feast day, Dec. 12. I know her well for this is my birthday, too, and all my life her image has been a part of my spiritual world. As a horticulturist, I am keen on the role of plants in this miracle, and that’s why there will always be a small corner of my garden dedicated to her. What few understand is why roses became part of this legend. It’s because the Spanish held a special link to the rose of Castile, Rosa damascena. This rose was native to Damascus, Syria, and likely brought to Europe by the Moors, who occupied Spain during medieval times. In the Guadalupe story, St. Juan Diego came upon a “lady” in the midst of winter on top of rocky, dry Tepeyac Hill in what is now Mexico City. His story was not believed by the local bishop, who asked for a sign only he would recognize. The lady told Juan to gather roses that miraculously appeared in the volcanic stone and

but don’t know how to get started, follow these simple steps. ■ Designate a spot. Small garden shrines are rarely front and center. Because they inspire contemplation, yours will have more “feel” if it’s in an out-ofthe-way spot or secluded from the rest of your living spaces. ■ Select an image. This can be a picture, a statue or even a keepsake with special memories. It must be sized to fit the spot you’ve selected, or choose one lightweight enough to bring indoors for the winter. Make sure a heavier statue is able to stand up to the weather for year-round visibility despite snow and ice. ■ Raise it up. Most statues are small and need to stand upon a pedestal. You can buy one or just turn a beautiful pot upside down
