s the official close of summer arrives next week, it won’t be long until the days become noticeably shorter. The welcome cooler weather also is a signal that the sun is continuing its relentless march beyond the equator, and for landscapers, is a reminder that a few weeks remain in which to prepare landscapes and turfgrass for winter dormancy. Traditionally, for North Central Florida, Sept. 30 is considered the last date to prune and apply fertilizers prior to the advent of cold weather. Pruning results in the onset of new growth, which is very tender; pruning after Sept. 30 can cause damage to new growth if temperatures drop suddenly and severely, which occasionally occurs in November. Fertilizer, too, initiates tender new growth, but more importantly, fertilizer should be applied when plants are actively uptaking nitrogen — not the case when plants are in dormancy. Nitrogen is very soluble and any that is not taken into the plant will be leached into the water table. When considering any fertilizer program for landscape plants, one should always begin with a soil test prior to a fertilizer application. The University of Florida soil testing lab offers this service at a very reasonable price, and test kits are available at Extension Offices. Testing results may take as long as two weeks, so testing should be done immediately to get results prior to the Sept. 30 deadline. In general, established landscape plants often do not need any additional nitrogen. However,

The artist’s name is Hilda Rubin. I ended up purchasing the painting, frame and all, for $5. Rubin was active during the mid-20th century, painting in abstract and cubist styles. She produced beach scenes, nudes, genre and still lifes. I purchased an old dresser approximately 25 years ago from a family named Jackson in Rochelle. I never really paid much attention to the dresser in detail until I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled all of the drawers out, I found an oil painting nailed on as a backboard for the dresser. The picture is definitely not a Florida scene. When researching the family and Rochelle, I found out that the family is a direct descendant of Stonewall Jackson, and that most of the founding families of Rochelle came from South Carolina. For turfgrass, standard recommendations based on University of Florida IFAS research should be employed. This means three pounds of controlled-release nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year for St. Augustine and Zoysia grasses and two pounds of controlled nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year for bahia and centipede cultivars. If the final nitrogen application has not been made, the deadline is approaching. In addition to nitrogen, an equal amount of potassium should be added during the fall fertilizer application. Potassium contributes to the general health of plants and often is compared to the multipurpose vitamin many adults take each day. For plants, potassium enhances root growth, resulting in greater drought and cold tolerance. The end of the month also represents a last opportunity to prune hedges and other landscape plants that need an occasional trim. The cooler weather and shorter days will slow growth, and this final pruning of the season should last until the middle of next March. Shrub pruning is done to thin plant growth to facilitate air movement, or it may be needed to control the size of plants. Sometimes severe pruning is a method for rejuvenating plants, but this is a strategy more suited to spring when

plants can recover immediately, rather than going through a dormant period. Remember that some plants like azaleas or camellias have already set buds for next year, so avoid pruning these — their time for pruning is immediately following bloom. Crepe myrtles are another plant that should not be pruned in fall; wait until mid to late February for pruning these. October and November are among the drier months of the year, and some supplemental irrigation will be required to maintain plant health as plants move into dormancy. Gardeners will need to monitor landscape and turf regularly and apply irrigation when plants initially begin to show signs of stress (onset of wilt in leaves due to dry conditions). Because supplemental irrigation has not been needed since last spring, it is important to examine the irrigation system prior to its use. Check for leaks and clogged or damaged spray heads, adjust spray patterns so that they arrive on the targeted plants and not on sidewalks or paved surfaces, check to ensure coverage is uniform. Plant management often is about limiting stress factors to ensure plant health. Applying the proper amounts of water and fertilizer and pruning at the right time are key elements in making sure plants are ready to perform when warm temperatures arrive next spring. Depending upon how much time or creative energy you want to invest, you can use it to make a big fall statement or just a whispered tribute to this beautiful season. A few mantel displays to inspire you: GORGEOUS GOURDS: I like to build displays with gourds of all colors and shapes. No matter what shape, size or color of gourd you pick for a mantel display, you’ll need some risers to give your display a variety of visual heights. One of my favorite tricks: perching a gourd on top of a candlestick. We used beautiful etched mercuryglass pillar candlesticks in one display, but any candlestick will do. We were going for symmetry on the mantel, so we stationed one on each side. To give the space in between some movement, we added a capital. Putting a bigger gourd on top of the small capital gave us the undulating lines we needed to make this simple scene captivating. A FLASH OF GLASS AND FOLIAGE: Simple glass vases can

Gold is back in a big way, and I’m so glad because it is a perfect pick to pair with the warm colors of fall. We used a tight color palette of shades of gold and white for one mantel display. The interest comes in the variety of shapes and sizes of glass pieces, which range from big vases to tiny votive cups to candy dishes. An old book is an excellent riser on a fall mantel, lending a drop of charm. Plus, it’s a great way to use some of those books wedged into all your bookcases. And I often use figurines in mantel displays because they bring a little unexpected surprise to viewers. One of my favorites for fall? Birds. The key to making fall greens look wonderful is to spend a few minutes working with them. The picks are flat when they come out of the package,

so it’s necessary to gently pull out all the branches, twisting them a bit, pointing them up and down and out, just as they would grow in nature. TIME TO CELEBRATE THE SEASON: Have you ever thought about using an old clock in fall decorating? I just love to work in large-faced wall clocks because they are so intriguing. In Halloween displays, I poise the hands at just a few minutes before midnight, as if anticipating a visit from ghosts and ghouls. Favorite fall-decorating tools are antique wooden dough bowls. Often we place these long, hollowed-out troughs at the center of rectangular dining tables, on hutches or over bookcases, filled with fall gourds and foliage. I want to keep the garage because it is from the same era as the home. Can it be repaired, or do I need to build new? Not only have I inspected older garages like yours, but when I was a contractor we were able to save some older garages in historical

neighborhoods. I am assuming the garage is a wood structure rather than brick, block or tile, because it’s leaning rather than settling and cracking. The garage is normally a simple, lightweight, wood-frame structure with wood planks on the exterior that also are exposed on the interior. What I often found was

that the foundation was cracked and had settled in different locations, allowing the load-bearing walls where the rafters sit to lean. A load-bearing wall supports the entire structure. The foundation had to be replaced, so we did this by supporting the entire garage structure, removing the old foundation and pouring a new wider footing and foundation wall. After the concrete dried, a 2- by 4-inch treated wood plate was bolted to the new foundation and the garage was lowered

I thought it would be nice to share some important Fall maintenance tips and help you in preparing for the winter’s worst and heading off expensive repairs. So here goes: 1. Stow the mower (I know, I know, we are not there yet, but) - If you have not used fuel stabilizer before, you should. By adding stabilizer to your mowers, and gas cans it prevents the gas from degrading and costly repairs next spring and summer. 2. Don’t be a Drip - Remove garden hoses from faucets. Leaving them attached can cause water to back up into pipes that could freeze, expand, and crack faucet or pipes 3. Put Sprinkler System to Sleep - Time to drain your irrigation system. Steps - Turn off water at main valve, Shut off auto controller, open drain valves, remove heads and shake out any remaining water. 4. Seal the Deal - Grab some caulk and weatherstripping and make your slow journey around the house. Seal up cracks between trim and siding, around windows and door frames and where pipes and wires enter your home. 5. Eyeball your Roof - Look for warning signs- Singles that are buckled, cracked, or missing: rust spots on flashing. Any loose, damaged or missing shingles should be replaced immediately. Black algae stains are cosmetic but masses of moss or vegetation need to be addressed and could cause decay underneath. Of course this is not a full list of chores to complete for the winter season. onto the new 2- by 4-inch plate. As the garage was being lifted, the walls would often realign themselves or we would use steel cables and turnbuckles to realign each wall. We would then add 4- by 8-foot sheets of plywood to the inside corners of the garage to keep the walls from shifting in the future. We corrected the sag in the roof by removing the roof shingles and decking, adding new rafters next to the older ones and adding additional cross ties (ceiling joists) to prevent

the walls from spreading out. Then new roof decking and shingles were installed. I know this sounds like a lot of work, but by using scaffolding on the exterior of the garage, adding cross beams and raising the structure with bottle jacks set on the scaffolds, it only took about two hours to lift the entire garage. There are a lot of necessary precautionary steps to make the garage lift safe, but the basic idea is that the repairs are feasible and a qualified

contractor will know what to do. If a new garage is required, it usually only takes about two days to demolish and haul away the old garage and two to three days to pour a new foundation and set a modular garage in place. Dixon was inspired by the waterfront setting for the interiors. With no wet dogs or sandy children in residence, he was adventurous in fabric and wall-covering choices. He kept mostly to solid color blocks, not wanting patterns to distract from the view. Lots of storage compartments and closets were added. As you enter through a teak front door handcarved with a concentric circle pattern, you are drawn into the main living space. To the left is the

kitchen and dining area topped by a chandelier made of recycled glass orbs. To the right, a round sea grass rug defines a living area, with lots of chairs, ottomans in shades of pale blue and purple, and a Christian Liaigre sofa in pale purple cotton velvet. Seating height was adjusted to allow for the best views of the ocean. “I wanted lots of small places to have conversations, because if it’s raining, everyone ends up in here,” Roseann says. Upstairs, the master bath shimmers with iridescent mosaic tiles from Architectural Ceramics in Rockville, Md., covering floors, walls and walk-in shower. The master bedroom has a custom silver leaf sleigh

bed topped by a triptych print of an antique octopus engraving, created by Natural Curiosities. The pale blues, greens and golds in the upstairs guest room and bathroom were inspired by marshes on South Bethany’s bay side. The house works for all seasons. Two fireplaces, heated floors, and plum and charcoal cashmere throws create a cozy winter haven. That’s when Pat and Roseann have the beach to themselves. “I love coming down the stairs in the fall, putting on my fireplace, grabbing a cup of coffee and stretching out on that lavender chaise,” says Roseann. “Pat and I love looking at the ocean at all times of the year. That’s total relaxation.”
