Big market for antique perfume bottles, not so much for old books

Q: Here is one of my pieces that are “different” that I have always liked. There are no markings on the scissors. Some of the things from England did not

say sterling but I found out they were marked by stamps. I cannot find stamps or anything on these. They do not cut paper or thread, grapes perhaps? — C.C. A: The English used a lion passant facing left stamp to indicate the item was made of sterling silver and other hallmarks to indicate city location and date etc. I think your scissors are 20th century reproductions in Victorian era style, only meant to be pretty to look at. Q: I am writing on behalf of my 95-yearold friend Jane. She has been collecting perfume bottles for many years. Most are antique and some not so old. They include cut glass, silver clad glass, painted glass, and range from one inch to 6 inches tall. Two curio cabinets about 14 inches by 25 inches with

glass doors hold the collection. She needs to raise money for her care now. Is there a market for such a collection and how might we find a buyer? I have included a photo of each cabinet with contents. Thank you for any advice you can offer. — M.R.

A: Antique and vintage perfume bottles are a large category of collector interest. I

suggest you contact the specialists in perfume bottle sales Monsen and Baer, Inc. They hold regular high quality cataloged auction sales of perfume bottles. They are located in Vienna, Virginia. The phone number is 703-938-2129. Q: I enjoy reading your column in The Gainesville Sun. I am hopeful that you can help us with the following items. My mother-in-law left us with 12 plates in the “A Tribute to Love” collection inspired by “The Rubaiyat” of Omar Khayyam. They are painted for Porcelain Ariel by Mossan Eskandar. These plates are beautiful, with a border of both gold and platinum. All of the plates are in their original boxes and have Certificates of Authenticity.

We would like to sell these plates and would like to know what they are worth and where we could take them for sale. We would appreciate your help with the plates. — L.C. A: There is no collector interest in your plates. They can be found for sale on the Internet at various sites for less than $10 each. I suspect if you got $5 apiece for your plates it would be a lucky day. You might try contacting Replacements Ltd. The phone number is 1(800)replace. Good luck. Q: My 94-year-old mother has several old books and would like to know the potential interest and value. They include a complete set of Mark Twain printed in the 1920s, a set of O’Henry, a set of Victor Hugo printed

in the 1800s and a set of Harvard Classics. Any help or advice or referral you can give is appreciated. — R.D.B., Newberry A: Collector interest in the old books you ask about is very soft and will likely remain so for a long time. For more specific information contact the Florida Antiquarian Booksellers Association. The website is www.floridabooksellers.com. Good luck.

GARDENING

Daylilies: An Ocala horticultural tradition By Judy Greenberg Special to the Star-Banner

The Pioneer Garden Club of Ocala’s emblem features a yellow daylily. My guess is that this was not by chance. The club emblem was adopted in 1954. Charter club member Ophelia (Mrs. Bright) Taylor was awarded the Bertrand Farr medal for outstanding daylily production by the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) in 1955. She was later awarded the society’s highest honor, the Helen Field medal, in 1963. The American Daylily Society Region 12 (Florida) established the Ophelia Taylor Horticulture Award in memory of Mrs. Bright

Taylor. The pin can be earned at an accredited AHS show. David Cook wrote about Ophelia Taylor in the Star Banner in April 2008: “She turned a hobby of developing and growing daylilies into a business. Yards in local residential neighborhoods featured varieties of her daylilies.” A feature article about The Florida Daylily, by Wyndham Hayward, Florida State Horticultural Society, 1950, stated: “Mrs. Taylor, a sincere and gifted daylily hybridizer, who has given something of a woman’s sympathy and charm to her daylily creations, has had a hybridizing and display garden at

Ocala for a number of years which annually attracts many visitors. Among her delightful varieties are Prima Donna, Rubaiyat, Gunga Din, etc.” “Day – lilies” are members of the Liliaceae, genus Hemerocallis. These highly adaptive plants thrive from the Artic to the tropics. Flowers of the plant remain open for only one day, giving rise to the scientific name, hemero – meaning “day” and callis – “lily”. According to UF/ IFAS, daylilies are drought tolerant and relatively free from serious pests. The variety of colors, flower shapes and long bloom season make them an

excellent choice for any gardener. Daylilies can be planted throughout the year in Florida. Having combed a fraction of the internet resources, I discovered some interesting tidbits worth sharing. A species of daylily that proved to be highly important for Florida hybrids is the Hemerocallis aurantiaca, believed to be a native of Japan. This truly evergreen species figures in the ancestry of most of the evergreen varieties that have been successful in Florida. The root of the daylily forms a huge mat beneath the surface that helps prevent erosion on hills or in areas where heavy summer

rain creates soil runs. When planted in mass, the daylily is a stunning display and can stop a brush fire in its tracks. The daylily is listed by several western states as fire-wise because it retains water during summer and thus drought tolerant. The Pioneer Garden Club will be planting daylilies at the Tuscawilla Art Park on Aug. 14 beginning at 9 a.m. The daylily bed in the Pioneer Garden at the Art Park was established in Spring 2016 with varieties from La Petit Jardin Daylilies of McIntosh. This donation of plants was the beginning of another era for the Pioneer Garden Club civic

beautification legacy promoting community involvement. August 2018 was the second planting of daylilies in the bed; plants donated by club members. Daylily plants for the upcoming planting are donated by former president of The Ocala Area Daylily Society, Pat Hawk, of Reddick. We welcome you to come out and join us for the planting and to be part of helping this display of daylilies grow. Bring a bottle of water and wear a hat. Visit us on the web at www. pioneergardenclub.org. - Judy Greenberg is a member of the Morning Glory Circle, Pioneer Garden Club of Ocala

Doggy decor: Designing for a fur baby

Fur babies are very important members of

the family. Yet I’ve had many customers tell me

they feel like they must choose between their pets and their decor. It’s true — our furry friends come with their own clutter, full of bowls, beds, toys and treats to spread out. It can be hard to place a dog bed over your carefully picked out hand-knotted rug, which needs to be seen to tie together the sofa and the curtains, after all. This chatter got me thinking. With the dog days of summer right around the corner (sorry, feline friends, we love you too!), there is no better way to celebrate then by exploring some ways to better harmonize your fur baby and your home furnishings. First things first, stylize the canine clutter. In my mind, the dog necessities I see out and about in homes the most are the bowls, beds, toys and

treats. While those who prefer to hide these items altogether would benefit from a stylish and functional basket or storage hutch, a lot of the time it’s not realistic to be constantly putting these necessities away. Instead, I encourage you to use items that enhance your decor and keep your frequently used dog goodies within arm’s reach. Start with the big things first, like the dog bed. We spend so much time picking out textiles and finishes for our own furniture, it’s a shame to throw off your space with a huge dog mattress. Fear not! There are so many high-performance fabrics available now, in countless colors, patterns and textures that it’s easy (and dare I say fun) to pick out a bed for your best fur friend. No longer an eyesore, they can

curl up by your feet in comfort and style. Porcelain dog bowls that match your own tableware are an elevated meal setting for pups. Still easy to wash and foodsafe, they don’t pull your attention when walking through a fully decorated kitchen. I recommend placing them on small washable rugs that can be ordered in any size. Using cute containers for treats and toys is another way to hide the clutter from visiting eyes while still adding to your decor. Once the necessities are taken care of, go even further and represent your furry family member in your own items. There is no limit to showing your dog love. From fabric to towels, art and statues there are canine items for every room in your house should you want them.

HOT PROPERTY

‘This Is Us’ star says this is it to modern Venice pad By Neal J. Leitereg and Jack Flemming Los Angeles Times (TNS)

Actor Chris Sullivan, best known for playing Toby on NBC’s “This Is Us,” has found a hip spot on the Westside, paying $2.333 million for a modern home in Venice’s Oxford Triangle neighborhood. Found a few blocks from the marina, the two-story home dates to 1956 but was extensively remodeled about four years ago. Among features are front and back landscaping and a park-like backyard complete with a patio, a built-in barbecue and a turf lawn. Stained wood siding lends a contemporary feel to the exterior. Inside, crisp white walls complement white oak floors and European walnut cabinetry. The open-concept floor plan combines a living room with a chic center-island kitchen. On the lower level, there’s a family room with a built-in fireplace. Four bedrooms and 3.75 bathrooms fill out the rest of the 2,230-square-foot interior and include a master suite with a glass shower. At the edge of the fenced property, a fire pit sits among droughttolerant landscaping. Over the last decade, Sullivan appeared in a handful of indie films before landing roles in the crime thriller “Imperium” and the Marvel blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” On the television side, the 38-year-old’s credits include “The Knick” and “Camping” in addition to his main role on “This Is Us.” Jerry Jaffe of Compass and Alison Betts of Douglas Elliman of California were the listing agents. Bryan Sullivan of Sotheby’s International Realty represented the buyer. Holding court elsewhere NBA superstar Russell Westbrook, who last year splashed out $19.75 million for a newly built home in Brentwood, has put his other place in the Beverly Hills Post Office area up for sale at $5.995 million. The two-story contemporary, once owned by “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” personality Scott Disick, was previously rebuilt and expanded by the Stewart-Gulrajani Design Team. Largely devoted to open-plan space, the main floor consists of a center-island kitchen, a living room and a dining area. An office, which doubles as another bedroom, sits off the common area. Floor-toceiling glass doors open to patio space off the living room.

The master suite takes in city-to-ocean views from the second story. There are five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms in all. Outside, grounds of more than a third of an acre hold a swimming pool with a spa, lawn and hedges. A two-car garage sits behind gates at the front of the house. Westbrook, 30, bought the house from Disick in 2015 for $4.65 million. The high-scoring point guard has deep ties to Los Angeles, having attended Leuzinger High School in Lawndale and UCLA, where he was the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. In the NBA, Westbrook has made eight all-star teams while winning the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2017. He has averaged a triple-double in points, rebounds and assists in each of the last three seasons. Donnell Beverly Jr. of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties holds the listing. An anticipated payoff After spending more than a year on and off the market, the Malibu home of late film and television legend Garry Marshall has found its new owner. The oceanfront house on Carbon Beach sold for $14.25 million, down from its original asking price last summer of $18 million. Marshall, who created the iconic show “Happy Days,” isn’t the only Hollywood name tied to the property. In 1981, Marshall bought it from actress Debbie Reynolds, who had the home built 16 years earlier. Clocking in at just under 3,200 square feet, it has five bedrooms and four bathrooms across two stories. Wood shingles and brick touch up the front of the house, and out back, a second-story balcony overlooks the ocean. Interior highlights include a living room with beamed ceilings and a loft lined with built-ins. Sliding glass doors open to an ocean-facing patio with a swimming pool. A staircase descends from the patio to 40 feet of beach frontage that served as a set piece in Marshall’s 2010 film “Valentine’s Day.” Marshall, who died in 2016 at 81, had a prolific career as a director, producer, actor and screenwriter. He directed his first feature film, “Young Doctors in Love,” in 1982, and went on to direct 18 others, including “Pretty Woman” and “The Princess Diaries.” He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1997. Tony Mark and Russell Grether of Compass held

the listing. Kickin’ it in Beverly Grove Professional footballer Gregory van der Wiel, who moved on from Toronto FC earlier this year, has bought a home in the Beverly Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles for $3.68 million. The contemporarystyle house sits behind gates and has steps that ascend to a 23-foot glass front door. Built in 2018, the multilevel home has a light and airy feel with walls of floor-toceiling windows and clerestories. Retractable doors open the interior to the outdoors. A high-ceiling living room, a formal dining area, an office, a chef’s kitchen, four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms are among the living spaces. A floating staircase made of glass and polished steel runs through the heart of the home. Outside, hedged

grounds hold a built-in barbecue, a pavilion and a swimming pool. A rooftop deck with a fireplace takes in citylight views. Van der Wiel, 31, signed with Toronto FC in 2018 and appeared in 34 combined matches with four assists last season. After a reported altercation with head coach Gregory Vanney in January, he and the Toronto club mutually agreed to part ways in March. The defender has previously played for AFC Ajax, Paris Saint-Germain FC and Fenerbahçe. He was part of the Netherlands national team that reached the World Cup final in 2010. Christina Collins of Hilton & Hyland and David Parnes of the Agency were the listing agents. Lauren Foster of Keller Williams Realty represented the buyer. Classic hacienda was once his bureau

In the Beverly Hills Post Office area, an estate once owned by newspaper publisher David Whitmire Hearst has come on the market for the first time in more than half a century for $13.5 million. Hearst, one of five sons of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, began his media career as a reporter for the New York JournalAmerican in the 1930s. After joining the Los Angeles Evening HeraldExpress in the late 1930s, he was elevated to the role of publisher at the paper in 1950, which he held for a decade. He remained an executive at Hearst Corp., serving as vice president and as a member of the board of directors, until his death in 1986 at 70. The former Hearst estate sits at the end of a gated driveway and centers on a haciendastyle home dating to the early 1930s. A grand entry featuring original

tile work sets the tone for the classic residence. Farther inside, a stepdown living room with an oversize fireplace sits beneath coffered ceilings. Another fireplace lies in the office/den. Two master suites and two staff rooms are among the five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. An attached guest apartment has a separate kitchen and living room. Outside, 1.5 acres of park-like grounds contain a grassy field, gardens, mature trees and a brick-surrounded swimming pool. Elsewhere, a loggia looks onto a courtyard with a tile fountain/well. Hearst sold the estate in 1953 to Samuel M. Fuller, a writer and producer at 20th Century Fox, for $57,500. More recently, it was owned by late B-movie filmmaker Larry Cohen. Susan Smith of Hilton & Hyland holds the listing.
