leaves and a beautiful flower that emerges from the leaf. It looks like an orchid, but I think it is a lily. The photo you sent is of a wonderful Florida-friendly plant called Neomarica or walking iris. So it really isn’t an orchid or a lily; it is in the iris family. This evergreen plant from Brazil is easy to grow and should be more common in our landscapes. They tolerate a wide range of soil and light conditions, but seem to perform best in full sun with some shade in the afternoon, or in bright shade. Provide water regularly in well-drained soils. The leaves of this plant are sword-shaped and can be 12 inches in height. They add an interesting textural component to the landscape. The flowers of Neomarica are what everybody loves. They are blue with dark blue centers, or white with royal blue centers. The flowers appear from April to November, and each bloom only lasts for one day. elebrate the season by giving your mantel a 15-minute summer makeover. Your mantel display is the eye-catching focal point of the room, so trick it up for the season. But don’t spend much time. Light and breezy — and supersimple — is the name of the game when it comes to summer decorating. Here are three simple but stunning mantel displays to inspire you this summer. ■ Soft and serene, an asymmetrical display can be intriguing yet delightfully simple. We started by creating a strong visual element on the left side. Pillar candlesticks were the perfect pick. They bring in arresting height, yet, because they are clear glass, they don’t overwhelm. Together, the three of them make a statement. For the right side, use a collection of visually diverse elements to create an arresting tapestry that also is very simple. To give our display some movement, we needed a riser to prop up a few accents. So we stole two books from our bookcase, turning them backward so only the vanilla pages showed. We echoed the clear-glass-and-white color palette established by the candlesticks through the first two accents in our montage: a white figurine and a clear glass paperweight. I love

a pop of color to shake things up in these monochromatic displays, and, boy, did we get it with maidenhair ferns. ■ I love white and brightly colored pottery right now. These pieces are a decorator’s dream because they are bold and beautiful structural elements that work in just about any style of home. Since red is so hot this season, we built this display around twin red vases. You can’t put anything wimpy next to these strong sentinels, so the other elements in the display needed to be just as powerful. Each side of this symmetrical mantel display is the mirror image of the other. Once again, we started by making risers out of a short stack of books, turned backward. The red vases stand guard on each side, made even bolder by the added boost they got from the books. We wanted the display to descend, creating a V, so we followed with slightly shorter white pottery vases, each holding live ferns. We could have stopped there for a simple, clean look. But we couldn’t resist the opportunity to add in something shiny, so we tucked in mercury-glass artichokes. Love them! ■ Of our three looks, this one is the most intricate and layered up. Still, when you deconstruct the design, you’ll see that it’s easy to re-create. We wanted a look that pulled together contrasts — strong graphic lines and soft curves. We gathered a passel of books that we used functionally as

On the last example, we formed a V shape with the decorative elements. This time, we reversed the line, gathering our accents into a triangle shape. We bookended the display with two similarly shaped but visually different pottery pieces. I love blue-and-white cachepots and use them all the time in my own home. Here we went with a lidded black pot on the right side of the mantel. One decorative possibility: rolling up pages of weathered old books and tucking them into different holders, like cachepots, footbaths, vases and wooden dough bowls. If you feel that old books are sacred, then this technique is not for you, because it involves removing pages. We took old books we got for a song at flea markets and tag sales, then gently cut out the pages, rolled them up and inserted several into a vase together. They offer lots of soft texture to a display and can be a fun conversation piece.

You don’t have to clear your mantel and start new when you decorate it for summer. You can just tuck a few seasonal elements into an existing display. That’s what I do at home. I have a few pieces I keep on my mantel year-round, like a pair of antique altar candlesticks. I’m smitten with these garish candlesticks, maybe because I grew up Catholic and they connect me with my roots, so I like to have them out all the time. But they’re a bit heavy for summer. So I lighten things up by mixing in ferns inserted into white, simple pottery cachepots. The right side of my mantel features a few of my other perennial favorites: wooden boxes from my collection and a figurine given to me by a dear friend. That is why it is called walking iris. Walking iris is easy to grow and to share. Once the plant gets large, you can easily divide the clump in the fall and spread the iris around the garden. They will tolerate temperatures in the low 20s, making walking iris a great plant for your Gainesville garden. ■■■

My yellow crookneck squash plants have white spots on them. Some are turning yellow and then die. Is this powdery mildew, and what should I do? Can I spray something? It sounds like you are seeing powdery mildew disease. We have been seeing this problem quite often this spring on vegetable plants like cucumber, zucchini, squashes and even tomatoes. Powdery mildew first appears as white spots on the top and bottom of the leaf. The spots spread over the leaves and stems and then the leaf turns yellow and dies. The disease is mostly limited to the leaf and stem, and doesn’t usually get on the fruits or flowers. The white spots that you are seeing are the actual layer of fungal mycelium and spores of the fungus.

These spores are carried by wind to other plants in your vegetable garden. Favorable conditions for powdery mildew disease are temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees and shade or cloudy weather. This can just about sum up our spring weather this year, so it is no wonder that the powdery mildew has been a common garden scene. The best method of controlling this disease is prevention. Plant resistant vegetable varieties in the full sun and allow for good air flow in the garden. Very susceptible varieties from the squash family (cucumber, melons, squash and pumpkins) may require fungicide sprays. But you have to apply the fungicide no later than the first sign of the disease. Use oil products such Ultra-Fine Spray Oil or Neem Oil at 7 to 10 day intervals. Do not spray oils in the heat of the day because it can damage the plant. It is best to spray in the early morning or late evening hours. Sulfur sprays also can be effective on powdery mildew, but again it has to be applied before the disease takes hold. Do not spray oil and sulfur within two weeks of each other. I was having trouble with a garbage disposal that was jammed and would not come on. I checked the breaker in the electric panel and it was off. I reset the breaker and it immediately went to “off.” I then turned off the switch to the disposal and reset the breaker and this time it stayed on. My wife, not knowing I had done this, came home while I was still checking the breakers and used the disposal and it worked just fine. Can you tell me why the breaker tripped twice and then everything was back

When the motor was “jammed,” the breaker tripped because the initial surge overloaded the breaker and the breaker tripped to prevent further damage to the motor and to keep the circuit wiring to the motor from overheating.

When you find a breaker that is tripped, and as you attempt to reset the breaker and it trips off again, do not try to reset it a second time. Doing so can cause serious damage to equipment on that particular circuit or the wiring to the equipment could ignite a house fire. Call a licensed electrician before resetting a breaker more than once, or if a fuse blows as it is being installed. Never use a fuse rated higher than the one that was removed. Fuses and breakers are sized accordingly for the wiring circuits they protect.

When you find a breaker that is tripped, and as you attempt to reset the breaker and it trips off again, do not try to reset it a second time. In a residence, lighting circuits are rated at 15 amps, small-appliance circuits are rated at 20 amps and a clothes dryer and water heater will most likely be rated at 30 amps. There will be a label on the side of the air-conditioning or heat pump’s outside unit stating the maximum fuse size for that unit. Most are rated at 30 to 40 amps, but some are as high as 50 amps.

Here is what I think may have happened in your case: When you first tried the disposal, the motor received a surge that tried to start the blades turning. When the breaker tripped and you reset it with the disposal switch still on, the motor received another surge that tripped the breaker, but that surge freed the motor, so that when your wife tried it again, the motor was no longer

“jammed.” A “jammed” disposal can often be repaired using a broomstick to turn the blades inside the disposal’s drain opening. In the future, you should also check the reset button on the bottom of the disposal to make sure it has not tripped. It is another safety device to protect the equipment from overheating. 167,680 vacant (abandoned) homes make up about 20% of all U.S. properties that are somewhere in the foreclosure process and sit ready for new owners but the banks do not own the homes yet. Florida also leads all states with the most owners abandoning their home before the lender officially takes it back. Out of the 544,274 bank-owned homes nationwide, at least 55,503 Florida homes still sit empty and will remain so until they have been officially foreclosed and sold to a third party. Florida also accounted for the most vacant foreclosures by zip code - 85 of the top 100 nationally, led by zip code 34668 in the Tampa/St. Petersburg metro area. Indiana, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, and Georgia are states where the percentage of owner vacated foreclosures was above the national average of 20%. Vacancy rates were higher on lower-end foreclosures: 29 percent on homes valued below $50,000 and 25 percent on homes valued between $50,000 and $100,000. However, 12 percent of homes valued $1 million or more were vacant. “Efforts to prevent unnecessary foreclosures and mitigate their impact on home values have resulted in a foreclosure process that takes an average of 477 days nationwide, and more than two years in some states – which is holding many of these must-sell properties off the market,” says Daren Blomquist, vice president at RealtyTrac. “Even if all these homes flooded the market simultaneously, they would likely not cause the oncefeared double dip in prices given supply constraints from non-distressed sellers and stronger demand,” he adds. “Given these market dynamics, it’s not surprising to see that Florida, Illinois and New Jersey – states with three of the four longest foreclosure timelines – have all had laws take effect in the last six months that speed up the foreclosure process on vacant properties. These laws should help provide some extra supply and possibly help reduce the threat of another housing price bubble forming in these markets.”
