ntrigued by the drama and inspired by the sophistication of British aristocrats in “Downton Abbey,” some fans are plotting to bring the series’ style into their own homes, from gilded finishes to opulent upholstery to portrait paintings. “We’ve gone so casual in the last decade in terms of home decor. I think there is a desire to be a little more formal, or a little more glamorous,” says Kristie Barnett, an interior design blogger in Nashville, Tenn. “That doesn’t mean it can’t be family-friendly.” “Downton Abbey,” in production for its fourth season, features the noble Crawley family “upstairs” and its servants “downstairs” in a sprawling country estate. The characters are struggling to bring the estate and their traditional sensibilities into the 1920s, a time of social and political ferment. Ornate drawing rooms,

Gilded for glamour One of the simplest ways to achieve the “upstairs” look of “Downton Abbey” is to apply gold metallic paint for a gilded finish on wood furniture, picture frames, mirror edges and other decorative items, including bookends and lamp stands. In her living room, Barnett, who blogs at TheDecorologist. com, used gold paint to make a barley-twist coffee table appear worthy of nobility. Golden candlesticks and a crystal doorknob atop piles of books finish the look.

inspired by all the beautiful blooms. Dogwood (Cornus florida) is a spring-blooming native tree for North Central Florida. The late freezes took off some of the flowers this year, but the trees that didn’t get frosted look wonderful. Dogwoods can be planted with success in the spring or in the fall. You will need to water every day for the first few weeks after planting, and then go to every other day watering for six to seven more weeks. This is not a plant-it-andforget-it tree. Probably more important than the timing of your planting is the location you pick for your tree. They do best in partial shade or early morning sun. Later afternoon sun is tough on dogwoods, because they are more of an understory tree in natural settings. Mulch the base of the dogwood with 3 to 4 inches of mulch, such as composted leaves or pine bark. During times of drought, make sure the tree gets supplemental irrigation. Late last summer, our air conditioner was not doing a good job of cooling, but we decided to save through the winter and have a new air conditioner installed in the spring. I have received several estimates on what we need to do to upgrade. We have a 1980s two-story home with an unfinished basement. One contractor wants to replace the air conditioner only. Some want to replace the furnace and air conditioner, and one wants to replace everything including most of the ducts. What should we consider in making a decision? The easiest and most economical choice would be to replace the air conditioner only, but that may not be in your best interests in the long run. If your plans include remaining in the home for five years or longer, you really should consider a total upgrade. Your question concerning an air conditioner leads me to believe the home is heated by natural gas and not an electric furnace, so my answer will be concentrated on a gas-forced air-heating system. There are so many variables with each home that the first thing you should do is have an energy audit performed. An audit will determine such things as: Do you have the required insulation? Is the home substantially airtight? An auditor may test to see if a home has a large amount of leakage of the conditioned air to the outside air or if the ducts have air

leakage inside the home. It’s critical for the house and the HVAC system to work together, and you can’t depend on the HVAC system alone. There is a guide to DIY energy audits at http:// energy.gov/energysaver/ articles/do-it-yourselfhome-energy-audits. But for such a large investment, you should use the services of a professional, certified by BPI (Building Performance Institute, Inc., at www.bpi.org) or RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network, at www.resnet.us). With a total upgrade, the contractor will determine if the existing ductwork is sized properly for the furnace fan, and where the furnace is located in the home. As I have stressed in past articles, when a furnace is located in a basement, it is difficult to cool the second-floor rooms, because the colder air is dense and does not rise as easily as warm air. With a new high-efficiency furnace, the furnace can be relocated to anywhere inside the home or attic to better cool the second-floor rooms. You should choose an HVAC (heating, venting and air-conditioning) contractor who uses the HVAC manuals designated for the sizing, placement and installation of the ductwork and for the proper sizing of the heating and cooling equipment. One home I recently

inspected had a 4-ton air conditioner for a 1,900-square-foot ranch-style home. In my opinion, the air conditioner was oversized and would quickly cool the home, but would do little to remove moisture from the home’s air. A damp home is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. I also found that the inside coil, which is part of the cooling system and located in the furnace cabinet, was not designed for a 4-ton system. All components of the HVAC system need to be matched to work efficiently, quietly and provide the most comfort for the homeowners. If possible, all the duct work should be located inside the home and not in an attic, attached garage or crawlspace, and all of the ducts must be sealed airtight at all joints and seams. Even though this has been a code requirement dating back to the 1980s, few contractors in my area bothered with sealing the ducts then, but the “times they are a-changin’ ” — and the new codes are being rigidly enforced. I would like to include bush beans in my vegetable garden this year. Should I buy transplants or seeds? What varieties do best in our area? Bush beans are great to include in your vegetable garden. They do well in the traditional garden as well as raised beds and containers. Bush beans start easily from seeds, so you do not have to purchase transplants. You will find the seeds at most retail garden centers. Recommended varieties of bush beans for

Florida include Bush Blue Lake, Contender and Provider. Roma II has a flat pod and does very well for us. The Cherokee Wax bush bean is a yellow pod bean with good production. There is a bush bean out there called Big Kahuna that grows long pods. I may just have to try that one this year. Planting time for bush beans is March and April, and again in August and September. Choose a site that has plenty of sun, at least six hours, and well-drained soil. Plant the seeds about as deep as they are wide. Water well, and within three to five days the plants will sprout and start growing. Beans will be ready to harvest in 55 to

need to watch for. There is a caterpillar called the bean leaf roller that eats the edges of the leaves. If you see this problem, hand pick the caterpillars or use a biological spray like Bt. Watch out for iron deficiencies in the leaves. This will appear as yellow leaves with green veins on the new growth. Correct the iron deficiency with a foliar iron spray and regular fertilizing. Whether you want to completely redo your mantel display for the new season or just add a seasonal tweak here and there, it takes just minutes to remake this little stage. Here are different mantel looks to inspire you. Great mantels start with great artwork as a backdrop. A peaceful oil painting might do the trick. Every good mantel display needs structure. So we pulled from our ample stock of interesting white pottery some pieces to build around. All the pottery we used is white,

but each piece is different from the others — some contemporary, some traditional, some tall, some tiny. When we design mantels, we create them to flow visually from a high point to a low point. Sometimes the high spot is at the center of the mantel, and the elements in the display descend from this central spot. This time, we built the display on just one corner, making our high spot the outer boundary of the mantel, carrying the line down to the center of the mantel.

Good greens are a great addition to a mantel display, whether they are picks, garlands or potted plants. I’ve long been a fan of bare, wild honeysuckle vine, and it’s a go-to tool for my fall and winter decorating. But it also looks sensational in a spring display. If you want, you could stop here for a multilayered look that will take you up to summer, or even until fall. Sometimes you need a full, fat bouquet of flowers to knock it out of the park.
