Muscadine grapes a favorite Florida crop mong the easiest fruit crops to produce for Florida gardeners is the muscadine grape. A native to the southeastern United States, the muscadine performs well in a variety of Florida soils. These are attractive to gardeners because they are not subject to damage from late-season frosts, and because they are tolerant of insect and disease pests, they can be successfully grown in home gardens without the use of pesticides. An abundance of flavorful fruit is produced in late August, provided grapes have been adequately cared for. Before growing them, there are a few characteristics that should be noted. While the flavor is outstanding, these grapes are not eaten as easily as the bunch grapes you might purchase at the local grocery store. Muscadines have a thick skin that most people elect not

hen Tracy Proctor octor Williamson bought her house in Larchmont, N.Y., a year ago, it was “just a kind of dark and sad-looking building.” The front door and trim were a depressing “yucky cream color,” says Williamson. The town assessor categorized the architecture of the two-story brick home simply as “old style.” Since then, Williamson has tried to bring the house back to life, most notably by boosting its mood with a sun-kissed yellow front door. “At first I was horrified because I thought the neighbors would hate me,” she says. “But I like it. It makes me feel really good.” Painting the front door a color that packs a punch is one of the quickest and easiest ways to change a house’s look and help it stand out from the rest. “It’s the difference between choosing classic red or something that has a little bit of fuchsia in it — something more like the color you love,” says Kate Smith, a Newport, R.I., color consultant. “Just that little bit of color can give you

Having recognized there are inconveniences in eating muscadine grapes, those who grow them and take time to eat carefully will be rewarded with excellent flavor for fresh consumption, grape juice or wine. Annual pruning, irrigation as needed and light fertilization are required. Muscadine grapes can be planted in an arbor configuration or in a traditional post-and-wire system, as you might see in commercial production. If electing the post-andwire system, space plants 12 to 20 feet apart. Training is a critical element in preparing the grapes for long-term production. After planting, a single, vertical shoot is trained, using a stake, until it reaches the top wire. Normally, side shoots will emerge, and these should be pruned off to concentrate growth on the vertical shoot, but do not remove the leaves growing directly on the trunk. Once the central vine grows to the wire, prune the tip of the shoot to facilitate the growth of two side branches to either side of the wire. Vines planted in spring should have cordon (scaffold vines extending from the trunk) completed during the first growing season. Irrigation will be needed to supplement rainfall. Grapes are blooming and fruit is growing during the spring, which is typically a dry time in North Central

Florida. Supplement with 1 inch of water weekly during dry weather. In my own grapes I have found it expedient to run a second wire, 2 feet above the ground, for the location of flexible irrigation tubing. Micro jet emitters, two 180-degree fixtures on either side of the trunk, are affixed to the tubing to place water on the plant root system. In order to maximize production, grapes will need to be pruned annually, sometime between mid-January and mid-March. First, remove any shoots that grow on the main trunk. Along the vine or cordon, the standard rule is to allow two to four node spurs spaced alternately every 6 inches, or as close to this as possible. Prune back each successive year, leaving three or four node spurs, because fruit is produced on the new growth. Over time, the new nodes that are selected each successive year are further and further from the cordon. Nodes that emerge on spur locations that are too far from the cordon eventually lose productivity and also result in a vine that is more difficult to manage. To resolve this problem, spur renewal is recommended every three to six years so that new fruiting wood never arises more than a foot from the cordon. Spur thinning can be accomplished by removing entire spurs or part of them, back closer to the vine. After five to 10 years, it is not uncommon for cordons to lose vigor.

When you reach this point, select another young shoot to train along the wire. It will become your cordon the following year. As with all crops, fertility management begins with soil testing. Fertilization should be based on reported soil fertility needs. Standard recommendations for grapes are to fertilize with a general-purpose garden fertilizer, as close to a 1-0-1 ratio as possible, i.e., 8 percent nitrogen, 0 percent phosphorus and 8 percent potassium. For young vines, fertilize soil with ¼-pound fertilizer in April after growth begins. Apply the fertilizer in bands about 1 foot to either side of the vine. Repeat this process in June and in August. The second year, using the same method, apply one pound of fertilizer in March and again in June/ July. In future years, the fertilization rates can increase to three pounds of fertilizer during March and June/July. Grapes offer excellent tasting fruit and are not subject to the difficulties many fruit crops experience from late-season cold snaps. How to give the boot to bathroom ceiling stain McClatchy-Tribune

I have a stain on my bathroom ceiling that is in the middle of the first floor of my house. The room above does not have any plumbing and nothing has been spilled up there. What can cause a problem like this, and how can it be fixed? During a home inspection, I always look at the ceiling above a bathroom because there is a large pipe inside one of the bathroom’s walls. The pipe extends all the way through the house and attic and finally above the roof. The pipe is a plumbing vent used to vent sewer gases and to allow air to enter the plumbing sewer pipes so they can drain efficiently. A rubber boot is slipped snugly over the pipe where the pipe penetrates the roofing creating a water seal. Over time, the rubber will degrade leaving an opening where rain or snow melt can run down the pipe to the ceiling below. Sometimes I have found stains on the ceilings of other rooms in a home where the water ran

down the vent pipe and followed a horizontal path along the pipe until a drip formed at a fitting on the pipe. If the fitting is above a living room, bedroom or kitchen, the stain will appear there. When you contact a repairman, he may simply caulk the rubber boot as a temporary fix. No matter how much caulking is used, it is “temporary.” A new rubber boot can be slipped down and over the vent pipe and left until the home requires a new roof covering, flashings and boots.
