GARDENING A background plant for landscapes s the holiday season draws to a close and decorations are packed away for next November, one of the leftovers in many homes will be colorful poinsettia plants. Coupled with the gold foil surrounding their containers, their bright red bracts make an attractive display for the Christmas celebration. Florida’s warm climate offers a unique opportunity to use these plants beyond the holiday season. Moved outdoors, poinsettias make an inconspicuous background plant in landscape beds, where their green leaves grow unnoticed through the summer. Around Oct. 1, as the amount of daylight lessens, the extended period of darkness triggers flowering. Selection of a location for poinsettias in the landscape is critical, for if the dark period is interrupted by artificial light from any source — a street light, light from an adjacent window, or any other source — flowering will be delayed or may not occur at all. If all goes well, the plants will flower with an attractive red in time for the next holiday season. Wait until early April, after the danger of frost is well past, to move poinsettias outdoors. Experience has shown that the red varieties establish better than other cultivars. Because healthy plants will perform best going into the landscape, be sure potted plants receive plenty of light during the remainder of their time indoors. Keep the plant in a warm location and water infrequently, so the potting soil is somewhat dry, and do not fertilize. It may

information regarding two bronze casts I have that are stamped with the name “Frederic Remington.” I attempted to do some research and found many online sites that sell the casts at a variety of prices. I believe they may be two of the numerous casts that were made after the originals were made by Remington. However, I am still uncertain as to how and who made these and their value, if sold. Based on my online search, the larger one is titled “Savage” and the smaller cast is titled the “Captain” as you probably are already aware. Both are stamped with the words “Copyright Frederick Remington,” and the larger cast is also stamped a second time with the name and date “Frederic Remington 1908.” Both are approximately 10 inches in height and are mounted on what appears to be a small marble base. I do not see any other dates or numerical markings on them. I have attached photos. Any information you could provide regarding their interest to collectors and value if sold would be greatly appreciated. — M.D., Internet Fredrich Remington, 1861-1909, was a sculptor, painter, etcher and illustrator. I thought maybe you could help me. I am 79 years old and live in rural Florida. I have no computer skills and do not have access to one; that is the reason for this letter. Last week I decided to do some house cleaning and throw out some junk. In one of the boxes, I found my grandfather’s pocketwatch. It is a 21-jewel Hamilton. My mother some 40 years ago took the watch to a jeweler and had it cleaned. She then bought a clear glass dome with a small stand inside. She hung the watch on this stand and displayed the watch on her mantel. The jeweler made a small note and attached the note to the chain. The note simply says, “Made in 1919.” Could you give me some idea to its value? — M.R.LaR., Salem The Hamilton Watch Company was one of the premier watch companies in the United States. be helpful to schedule watering dates on a calendar, so the plant does not dry out completely. After the weather has begun to warm and you are ready to transition the plant outdoors, cut off the fading bracts, leaving 4-6 inches of the stem on each branch. Select a location that offers partial shade, leaving the plant potted for a week or two to help it transition to outdoor temperatures and brighter light levels. Poinsettias should be planted in areas where they receive sun most of the day. Well-drained soils are critical, for these plants will not grow well in wet areas. A soil pH of 5.5-6.5 offers optimal conditions for nutrient uptake. Dig a hole that is about two times as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower. Gently place the plant straight in the hole and fill around the ball with soil. Water thoroughly while planting to remove air pockets. Over the next several weeks, water as needed, depending on soil and weather conditions, so the soil remains moderately moist during the establishment period. Pinching back the leaves of the plant during the growing season will result in a compact plant at flowering time, rather than one with a few long, unbranched canes. After the plant is established and new growth is about 12 inches long, cut the plant back, leaving four leaves on each shoot. This procedure should be repeated during the summer, each time the plant has grown an additional foot, until about

Sept. 10. Pruning after this date will disrupt the timing for holiday-season flowering. Lightly fertilize landscape poinsettias monthly from late spring until early fall, using a fertilizer with balanced amounts of nitrogen and potassium (the first and third numbers of the analysis) and low phosphorus (the middle number). Follow the application directions on the product label. As December approaches, in many years, we receive frost. Protect poinsettias by covering them with a frost-protective cloth to preserve their landscape color for the holiday season. After the season is over, you may elect to allow these plants to freeze until the warm weather returns in the spring. When you are certain the danger of frost is past, cut the plants back to within 12 to 18 inches of the ground, unless they have been frozen below this point, in which case they should be cut back to green or “live” wood. The poinsettia you enjoyed indoors this Christmas season can continue to provide beauty in the landscape for many seasons yet to come. As with most landscape plants, installing a healthy plant initially, caring for it during the establishment period and infrequent attention during the growing season are important elements in good performance. Your efforts will be rewarded with wonderful landscape color for next the holiday season. David Holmes is Marion County extension director. Contact him at david.holmes@marioncountyfl.org.

STYLE AT HOME

New Year’s resolution: Stay true to your decorating style McClatchy-Tribune

do some of my best decorating-related dreaming during the quiet, still days of early January, when the hullabaloo of the holidays is past, the seasonal finery is packed away and my home is back to its most natural state. That’s when I make my decorating New Year’s resolutions, the list of things in my home I want to tackle in the coming year. I’ve learned from experience that I’m happiest with my design decisions when I keep these five guiding principles in mind. I hope they will help you, too, as you dream big about what you’d like your home to become in 2014. 1. KEEP YOUR ULTIMATE DESTINATION IN MIND. Dan and I recently purchased a tiny little fixer upper (which is being charitable — it needed major work) by a sweet little lake. It’s modest and cozy, and it reminds me of the bungalow I lived in when I moved back to Atchison, Kan., years ago to start my shop. Since I spend my days helping Nell Hill’s customers reach their decorating dreams, imagine my glee at having this project of my own to pour some creative energy into. I was starting from scratch, so I spent a lot of time mulling over what style I wanted for my little escape. Modern? Transitional? Traditional? So what do you do when you are at a decorating crossroads, when you’re moving into a new home, renovating a room or just giving an existing space a facelift? Which direction do you go — your tried-and-true look or someplace new? Only you can discern the right answer, but here’s my recommendation: Stay true to your style. That’s what I ended up doing with my little lake house. After veering off in different decorating

One of the ways to decorate your rooms so they nourish your spirit is to fill them with things that give you joy, like photos of loved ones, gifts from treasured friends, mementos from vacations or special events. directions, I finally stopped and listened to my heart: I wanted this little house to look like it had been in my family for generations, filled with comfortably classic furnishings. 2. PUSH A BIT OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. Once you know your decorating destination, be open to serendipity. As you are exposed to new styles and trends, give them a look and see how you might adapt them to your home to keep your decor fresh. If you love color, that may mean painting a wall a splashy new tone. Maybe you could experiment with pattern on a new piece of furniture. Or you might want to mix up your displays with a few new accents every season. In my home, I’ve been taking a new look on my traditional decor. As a result, I’ve lightened up my layers through the years, introduced contemporary patterns though my accent pillows and bought some fabulous transitional lamps. My home still says “me,” but is always evolving, not stale. 3. STAY TRUE TO YOUR PALETTE. This is an over simplification, I know, but in general, I think people gravitate toward warm or cool color palettes. Even though I adore the clean lines and bold colors in today’s reinvented geometric prints, when I use orange, turquoise or chartreuse in my own home, I pair them with creams because I gravitate toward a warmer

Which one works best for you and your home? A few of Nell Hill’s customers have told me that they tried some more contemporary pieces in their traditional homes but didn’t fall in love with them. They wanted to go back to their traditional look. My guess is that when they picked the more modern pieces, they stepped too far outside their color palette and missed the warmer tones. The problem was easily solved: Mix in warm colors through pillows, window coverings, area

rugs or accents. 4. MAKE SURE YOUR HOME NOURISHES YOUR SPIRIT. As you decorate your home, your goal should not be to make it the stuff of decorating magazine centerfolds. It should be to create a space that fills your senses and nourishes your spirit. Beautiful furnishings are a means to an end, not the end itself. I know it sounds schmaltzy, but my home is kind of a sanctuary for me, a place where I can refill my tank. Every morning I recharge my batteries as I sit in my favorite chair, drinking a cup of coffee, enjoying a moment of solitude before the craziness of the day.

One of the ways to decorate your rooms so they nourish your spirit is to fill them with things that give you joy, like photos of loved ones, gifts from treasured friends, mementos from vacations or special events. I keep all of the above on display in my home, like a photo of our daughter on her wedding day. This year, as you design your rooms, include objects that tell your visitors about you, your family and all you hold dear. As you personalize your spaces, you will not only make your decor more beautiful, you’ll make your life more beautiful, too. 5. LET YOUR ROOMS EVOLVE OVER TIME. I’ve been reminded of a valuable lesson as I’ve renovated my tiny lake house. Don’t be in a rush to finish. Instead, let your spaces evolve over time. In our “hurry up” world, we are often anxious to zip through a decorating project so we can get to the other 10 million things on our list. But I’ve found that the rooms I love most in my own home and in the homes of others are those that have come together more slowly, layer by layer. A slower, more deliberate approach to decorating allows you to stick your toe in and see how it feels, whether that’s experimenting with a new color, style or accent. For example, as I’ve decorated my living room through the years, I’ve filled about every inch of wall space with artwork. I really love artwork, so in order to pack more in, I’ve had to get creative on where to hang new pieces. That’s how I ended up hanging Dan’s butterfly collection on the molding of a bookcase. I love how it looks! Each layer, one on top of another, added through the years, makes my home more beautiful to me. HOME MAINTENANCE

Sagging floors in older homes are not uncommon McClatchy-Tribune

I live in a 40-year-old, split-level home and the main floor is showing signs of sagging (crack in ceiling, kitchen counter flush to cabinet at one side but floating off cabinet by about ½ inch at other end). This is the main floor and is about 25-by-25-feet and over a 3-foot unfinished crawl. What is the proper way to shore up the floor, and is it something a DIYer can tackle? Sagging floors in older homes are not uncommon. A lot of times I will see extra supports that have been installed by a homeowner or contractor. There are two different scenarios that can cause sagging. One would be that the main support beam is sagging, which would cause the ceiling to crack, and the other is sagging floor joists, which you would notice by a dip in the floors. I would assume the beam is sagging because the kitchen wall, which is over the support beam, has settled, causing the ceiling to crack. If you have a laser level, it is easy to check the beam for sags, but if not, you can stretch a nylon string from one end of the beam to the other to check for

Touchless-style kitchen faucet: Hands down one of the best types of kitchen faucets if you like to do a lot of cooking. With a touchless faucet you can prepare food and turn the faucet on and off without touching any handles. A touchless kitchen faucet also can conserve water, because with just one wave ... you can save, save, save! ■

low points along the length of the beam. Pull the string as tightly as possible and place a ½-inch block of wood at each end of the string so that the string is not touching the bottom of the beam. Then use another block of ½-inch wood to check at various locations along the beam. There should be piers supporting the beam every 4 to 6 feet. Check to see if the piers have settled or if the beam was installed using wood shims between the beam and the pier. Wood shims will fail over time, allowing the beam to sag. Replace wood shims with large metal washers you can find at home and hardware stores. If the piers have settled, you will need to dig a 2-by-2-foot-by-12-inchdeep hole close to the settled pier, fill the hole with concrete and, after the concrete has dried, install a jack post to add support to the beam. Do not try to lift the beam all at once. Once the jack is snug against the beam, give the screw a quarter turn every four to six

If the walls above the jack start to crack, quit adjusting the jacks. For sagging floor joists, install two concrete footings the same as required for the pier and add two or more jack posts under a 4-by-4-inch treated wood beam installed perpendicular to the joists halfway between the exterior foundation wall and the main beam. Duke Rountree 2013 PRESIDENT OCALA/MARION COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®

"How Time Flies, When Your having Fun!" I wanted to first say, "Thank You" to all of the over 1,000 Ocala Marion County Association of REALTOR members who elected me to represent them as President in 2013. It is because of our members and leadership, past and present, we are able to provide great services to the community we all call home. I am proud to be a part of such a great organization and I look forward to the future. I must admit it has been a long year and writing 52 articles was a challenge along the way. I hope you have enjoyed the articles, learned something along the way and I am sure disagreed with me on a few occasions. Thank you so very much for the kind words and encouragement throughout the year and remember, "Make each day your masterpiece." John Wooden.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! John Wayne “Duke” Rountree SOME PROVIDED BY NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® WHEN SELLING OR BUYING REAL ESTATE, REMEMBER TO CONTACT A REALTOR® FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES.

Embrace upholstery

Light the fire

Warm, cozy upholstery fabrics work on a practical level by holding your warmth when you touch or sit on them. But Ryan points out that they also work visually: A room full of soft, warm fabrics will give you a psychological sense of warmth that adds to your enjoyment. So add thick throw blankets to chairs and sofas, and swap out silk-covered pillows and even lampshades for ones covered in thicker, nubbier fabrics like muslin and burlap. Ryan also recommends using thick curtains in winter. A decade ago, he said, “curtains were considered fusty and old-fashioned and expensive.” But with so many beautiful, inexpensive curtains available today, they’ve become popular again. Besides adding color or a bold pattern to a room, curtains also block cold air that might leak in

Crackling flames in an indoor fireplace can change the feel of a room instantly. And outdoors, they bring a welcome infusion of heat and light on a winter evening. “Outdoor fireplaces are increasingly more and more popular, coast to coast,” Flynn said. “They’re not all that much of an expense like an outdoor kitchen would be.” If you’re building a new outdoor fireplace, leave ample room for seating. “Many times homeowners have outdoor fireplaces built, but there’s only enough room for a small table or two chairs. What’s the point, people? The whole idea is to gather and stay cozy outdoors,” Flynn said. He suggests planning “at least 12-by-14 feet of space around the front of the fireplace to ensure a sofa and loveseat as well as a coffee table and end tables will fit.”

Lay down rugs Gleaming hardwood or

tile floors are lovely in spring and summer. But in cold weather, add a thick rug or swap out a thin one for something heavier. This will not only warm your feet, but also change the look and sound of your space. “When acoustics are dampened,” Ryan said, “the room feels warmer.” An outdoor rug can have the same impact. “Thick outdoor area rugs are made of acrylic/wool blends,” Flynn said. “The wool feels great on your feet and definitely locks in warmth.”

Improve your circulation This last tip, shared by Ryan, comes from a conversation he had years ago with home décor guru Martha Stewart. She advised him to run his ceiling fans backward in winter to push warm air back down along the walls of the room. If you don’t have ceiling fans, Ryan suggests adding one or two for energy savings and added comfort year-round.

Hollywood Hills house is wall-to-wall Chris Brown By Lauren Beale Los Angeles Times

inger Chris Brown has listed the house in the Hollywood Hills that bore his graffiti-like artwork at $1.92 million. If would-be buyers are disappointed that his exterior scrawling has been painted over with a coat of drab green, there’s still plenty to party about at the property. Several interior walls in the four-story home are adorned with toothy cartoon characters. Stairs and an elevator connect the 3,000 square feet of living space, which includes an art studio, a loft, three

S

bedrooms and three bathrooms. An unusual open-concept bedroom Brown suite features a red stand-alone tub and a glass shower in full view of the sleeping area. Outdoors, the saltwater pool and spa are illuminated by colored LED lights. There’s also a projection screen, stone waterfalls and fire pits. The Grammy-winning Brown, 24, will release his sixth studio album, “X,” next year. Among his

popular songs have been “Deuces,” “Wall to Wall” and “Kiss Kiss.” Brown’s probation in connection with his 2009 conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna was revoked again in mid-December because of his October arrest in Washington. Brown bought the house two years ago for $1.55 million. ■■■

Recently terminated University of Southern California head football coach Lane Kiffin and his wife, Layla, have listed their home in Manhattan Beach at $6.995 million. The upscale beach city

has long been popular with college and professional coaches and athletes, in part because of its proximity to Los Angeles International Airport and professional training facilities. The couple bought the house last year for $5.5 million. The 7,308-square-foot contemporary Craftsman, built in 2002 and since updated, sits on nearly half an acre at the end of a cul-de-sac. The grounds include a saltwater swimming pool and spa, a fire pit, a guesthouse, an outdoor kitchen, a dog run and mature trees. Among interior features are vaulted ceilings, a

Real Estate

stone fireplace, six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The three-car garage opens to a gated driveway. Kiffin, 38, was head coach of the USC Trojans from 2010 until September. ■■■

Ice hockey great Wayne Gretzky has listed a town house in Thousand Oaks for sale at $1.899 million. Yes, 99 does happen to be his jersey number, which was retired throughout the National Hockey League when the center retired in 1999. Coincidence — or a lucky number, perhaps? Set behind the gates of

the Sherwood Country Club, the 3,758-squarefoot unit has two fireplaces, four bedrooms and four bathrooms. There are two patios and a balcony. The cul-de-sac location has lake, mountain and valley views. Gretzky, 52, played in the NHL for two decades before turning to coaching the Phoenix Coyotes. The former Los Angeles King and Hockey Hall of Famer earned the nickname “The Great One” as the leading point scorer in league history. Email Lauren Beale at lauren.beale@latimes. com.
