Reupholstering Heirloom Furniture

By Gina Dostler

Time creeps its way past us all with tiny tictocs reverberating endlessly throughout our lives. And though we capture minutes of it with videos, family portraits and loved memories, we cannot halt it. Its persistent march permeates everything, stamping its progression silently over the world’s busy life. Treasured antique, vintage and modern furniture feel the journey of time over their frame and cushions and fabrics. Surely as night turns into day, a dining room chair gradually becomes a family heirloom that reflects its own set of personal history. Or a sofa soon becomes out of sync with current designs and before you know it your niece is gaga over its vintage quality. Maybe the new sofa purchased several years ago doesn’t match the current wall coloring, but the frame design still fits perfectly. Reupholstering furniture manages the effects of time by giving back newness to furniture.

Whether it’s a new look or the freshness of new material, having an expert craftsman upholster furniture is a smart, efficient and cost affective way to go. As I leaned back in my chair, Don Pearce of Pearce Upholstery filled me in on the basics upholstery. Q: How long have you been upholstering furniture? A: I’ve been happily upholstering furniture for 36 years. I was 20 years old when I started doing upholstery as an apprentice and was taught by several masters in the old world method. I now hold a journeymanship in both furniture and automotive upholstery. We work with commercial business as well as for fine homes throughout southern California. Currently I’m working in LA reupholstering booths for Panini restaurants. Q: Why consider upholstering? A: Replacing furniture with new furniture can get expensive. Reupholstering existing

School Board Approves Drug and Alcohol Program By Sara Hall | NB Indy

The school board approved an agreement between the district and California Youth Services Foundation for a drug and alcohol program during their regular meeting Tuesday night. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board of education approved the contract with the Laguna Hills-based organization for the Juvenile Alcohol and Drug Education evening program and the Second Chance day program, effective between July 1, 2011, until June 30 next year. The budget amount is not to exceed $103,200. The budget includes $50 an hour for Crisis Counseling (not to exceed $1,000 per month), a flat fee of $4,000 per month for Second Chance, and a flat fee of $3,600 per month for JADE (pays for 12 students). The district previously went through the Boys and Gils Club of Tustin for the same programs, but California Youth Services has recently obtained nonprofit status and the district is now able to contract with them directly. The programs will be for students with first-time or alcohol offenses on campus or during school functions.

Board members also decided to “Stand up to character- down to bullying” by adopting a resolution to make October 2011 Bully Prevention Awareness Month for the district, a campaign that schools and organizations across the country have also adopted. The move is “a symbol of our commitment to the year-round struggle against bullying,” the resolution text reads. The staff report included with the board’s agenda item noted that kids involved with bullying in any way, those who bully others, those who are bullied, and those who have been both, are more likely to become depressed, skip school, perform badly in school, and think about or attempt suicide. “This resolution acknowledges and heightens awareness about the serious issues and the negative effects of bullying, including the long-term damage it can cause in our youth as well as the risks of teenage suicide,” the report states. The district is also holds Cyber-Bullying Weeks between Oct. 24 and Nov. 4, which includes activities and curriculum to help educate students about the importance of treating each other with respect and dignity. school, Page 22

Professional surfer Matthew “Wilko” Wilkinson, 23, of Copacabana, New South Wales, Australia, was arrested near Balboa Boulevard and 18th Street on Saturday for public intoxication. Officers responded to a call of a male subject laying in the street in the area, said Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe. According to surfline.com, the rockstarlike Aussie surfer, who is ranked 18th in the world, decided to make Newport Beach his home for the summer. Wilkinson is “one of the world’s most exciting young surfers, not to mention one of the ASP World Tour’s most entertaining characters,” says ripcurl.com. Last month, he started a blog on the ASP website, which includes photos of him partying, and carries the disclaimer “Some content may only be suitable for adults.” One photo of two women kissing has the caption, “i love cali.” Wilkinson is known as a big-wave surfer, but he has had success on the ASP tour, winning the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Santa Cruz last year to establish himself.
