or the past four weeks the 18 finalists in the prestigious Miss Limpopo/Teen 2014 pageant were involved in various community
>> Lebogang Malatji visited Malesa Primary School in Mentz where she planted a vegetable garden as part of her food security project. She also paid a visit to the Bula Mahlo Drop-In Centre in Badimong to donate clothes and stationery and prepared lunch for the children. >> Matsobane Phasha spent a splendid day at Ga-magowa with the children of the Mponegele Orphanage Centre. She donated food parcels and planted a vegetable garden at the centre. >> Kholofelo Lekganyane embarked on various projects including a visit to the Mamahlola Day Care Centre in the Makanye Village where she donated food. She also donated shoes, clothes and food to foreigners living in the Tikiline Village in Tzaneen. >> Annah Malatji adopted the Rekakgona Drop-In Centre at the Ga-MothapoVillage in Makgwareng which caters for 51 learners from around the village. She plans to provide sponsorship for improvements and renovation to the centre.

The gesture was repeated at the Matatshe Correctional Services in Thohoyandou. >> Lesego Mangaba visited the Tshepo Drop-in Centre where she delivered food, stationery and toys and motivated the children to follow their dreams.

Her first book was launched at the Cape Town Book Fair in 2007 and her second book on Women’s Day at Museum Africa during the Jozi Book Fair in 2009. Hassim is also the editor of “Belly of Fire: an anthology” (2011). Based on her research, she has presented seminars at Humboldt University in Berlin and also lectured at the Department of Sociology at both UKZN in Durban, SA and at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Local author honoured at SALA gala event Author Shafinaaz Hassim, who has her roots in Polokwane, recently emerged as nominee in the prestigious South African Literary Awards (Sala) at a gala dinner in Johannesburg. Hassim, who is a sociologist at the University of Johannesburg, was nominated for the K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award for her new novel on domestic violence, SoPhia. SoPhia was also shortlisted for the University of Johannesburg prize for SA writing 2012/2013 and has received and generated extensive debate since its launch, on various platforms including Time of the Writer and Wordfest at the National Arts Festival. The event was held in partnership with Write Associates, Goethe Institute and the Department of Arts and Culture at Museum Africa in Johannesburg. Other authors in attendance at the awards included Etienne Van Heerden, Karen Schimke,
