johnson, lyndon baines (19081973), a one‑time texas schoolteacher, became president of the united states on nov. 22, 1963, after the assassination of president john f. kennedy. johnson, a democrat, was the eighth vice-president to become chief executive upon the death of a president. he also was the first southerner to become president since andrew johnson of tennessee succeeded to the presidency after the assassination of abraham lincoln almost a hundred years earlier. *** in 1964, johnson was elected to a full term as president in a landslide victory . he and his running mate, senator hubert h. humphrey of minnesota, defeated senator barry m. goldwater of arizona and representative william e. miller of new york. johnson’s presidency during kennedy’s unexpired term did not disqualify him from running for president in 1968. *** before lyndon johnson was elected vice-president in 1960, he had served in congress for almost 24 years. when johnson was only 29 years old, he won election in 1937 to the u.s. house of representatives. he was elected to the senate in 1948. five years later, at the age of 44, johnson was chosen as democratic leader of the senate— the youngest man ever elected senate leader by either party. *** as senate democratic majority leader during the administration of republican president dwight d. eisenhower, johnson earned a reputation as a skillful, shrewd politician . he was a master at behind-the-scenes political

Nels Johnson Clockmaker

1838 - 1915 This is a copy of Nels Johnson’s account of his life written in his 76th year. In addition to clockmaking, which became the hallmark of Nels Johnsons career, he owned and operated a machine shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Manistee he started another machine shop which was lost in the fire of 1871. He built another machine shop, boiler works and foundry located on the present Rengo property between Water and First Streets. Two of the three original buildings remain. Mr. Johnson found it necessary to study astronomy at the University of Michigan for his clockmaking business. As an adjunct to his Century Tower Clock manufacturing, he built a telescope in the early 1900’s which he later donated to Manistee High School. Century Tower Clocks can be found throughout Michigan and the United States and in other countries - India, China and England. Nels Johnson was a member of the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. About 1914 an article about his accomplishments was published in the American Magazine.
