Student Leadership Team The team has been working on setting up a Homework Club, which will be piloted during the second half of the summer term for Year 7 students only. Computers and stationery/equipment will be provided for students to use and the sessions will run every Monday during Break 2 in Room 001. The sessions will be managed by student leaders (with a member of staff supervising) and it is hoped that the club will provide a safe and quiet environment for Year 7 students to maximise their lunchtimes to get their homework done. Selected Key Stage 3 student leaders will be going for a tour of the House of Commons at the beginning of June, which has been facilitated by our local MP, Gavin Barwell.
Since September, the KS4 team has been working with Mr Greenland on designing and building our Student Virtual Learning Platform which can be accessed via the homepage of our website. The team has concentrated on tackling the communications aspect of the site, and they have set up new features such as student calendar/planner and timetable, news and events, assembly times, noticeboard, ‘Teacher of the Week’, Pizza with the Principal, Enrichment information and useful videos, quotes/jokes of the day and tips. In addition to actually creating the site, the student leaders also delivered lessons during a special tutorial session after Easter, providing a demo to students in Years 7, 8 and 9 and fielding feedback and questions. All students are encouraged to login on a daily basis to see what’s going on around the academy and to keep up to date with sports fixtures results.
Student Leadership Team Student Leaders from Years 9 and 10 accompanied Mrs Collins to a meeting with student leaders from our sister Academy in Coulsdon. Mr Calvo and eight students ranging from Year 8-10 hosted us and we were treated to a tour of their building and a sandwich lunch, followed by a brainstorming session. A follow up meeting has been arranged for the second half of the summer term, which we will be hosting here at Shirley Park, where we will formulate our ideas for a competitive Sports Day with Oasis Academy Coulsdon and Oasis Academy Byron.
Fingers crossed! We have entered our Sixth Form volunteers who run the Secondary Phase breakfast club into the Croydon Community Civic Awards, young volunteer nomination. Every day, Luke Townsend, Martyna Jara, Michael Beeson, Andrew Richards and Kayleigh Terry sacrifice an extra hour in bed by coming into the Academy to prepare juice, toast and cereal and serve the 600 students who use the breakfast club everyday. We would not be able to run this as a free provision without their service. Good luck!
Senior Student Leader positions for 2014/15 will be advertised soon and there will be an online application process this year – please check the Student VLE after Half Term
This term former X-Factor finalists Brick City visited ear 8 & 9 students to deliver a drug awareness message to Shirley park pupils earlier on this term. This was a great experience for the pupils providing excellent life skills; highlighting the negatives that drug & alcohol abuse can have amongst young people. After delivering a positive message the group began to perform some of their latest material which was very well received by all! The students even managed to get autographs and a large selfie with the band!
Sports Sports tour to Holland On April 7th, Mr Davies, Mr Norman and Miss Rowe took 26 students on the first ever Shirley Park sports tour to Valkenburg, a village and former municipality in the province of South Holland, western Netherlands. We are very privileged to have a range of hugely successful sports teams across the board with our Football, Netball and Basketball sides in attendance. The students had up to five hours professional coaching every day followed by a competitive game against Dutch opposition. The final day the teams represented Oasis Academy Shirley Park in a UK schools based tournament. During downtime the students were also kept busy with activities involving a tour of PSV Eindhoven FC, Lazer tag, tobogganing and daily free time. “A really enjoyable trip and I would definitely do it again. The trip was a success! Umut Parmak
Sports This term the Shirley park athletics team had a successful meet in the Croydon Championships – the Boys team came 5th/18 and the Girls team were 8th/18
A massive well done to the year 9 Boys for successfully completing the League and Cup double!!
Over the past four years we have continued to strengthen our hugely successful partnership with Crystal Palace FC with their academy players studying at Shirley Park. As a result on 6th May, Crystal Palace FChosted their annual awards evening where two Academy students Aaron Bissaka and Corie Andrews scooped very lucrative awards.
Primary TA Open Morning Yesterday, the Primary Phase TAs were invited to the Secondary Phase for a coffee morning and a tour of the Academy.
This was led and organised by the Secondary Student Leadership team and Year 7 students who previously attended the Primary. The TAs were initially given a tour of the Academy which entailed lesson observations – providing an insight into the outstanding teaching standards delivered.
This was followed by an informal chat with staff and students over coffee and cakes. Overall feedback was excellent and as we continue to enhance the ease of transition for students from the Primary Phase to Secondary, such events will continue in the near future.

Chaplaincy Team REFLECTIVE SPACE From 14th July for five days the Youth and Chaplaincy team will be putting together a reflective experience in the Secondary Academy Library. Reflective spaces have been used in a number of schools and are developing yearly, proving successful in participation with both young people and adults. Young people will be given the time to work through a number of different thought provoking activities, in a space designed to produce a calm and reflective environment away from their busy school day. Activities will focus on aspects such as family, saying sorry and thank you and asking big questions.
