President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: August 29, 2016

G

ood morning and welcome to the official opening of school, in this 138th year for Oak Hill Academy. Today is our once-a-year, startof-the-year ceremony—convocation. In just a few moments we will toll the academy bell, signaling the formal beginning to our 2016-17 school year. A few words for you today. As you find yourself seated here in the Fletcher Chapel, where we gather each and every day for morning assembly, perhaps on a few occasions you shall be asked to “sit up and pay attention.” At OHA we do things a certain way, with proper decorum; and that tone begins in this room when an adult steps to this podium for opening prayer. Today, I want to ask you to sit up and do something else, and that is “sit up and take heed.” This phrase, “take heed,” is old people speak for, “I want you to really (REALLY!) pay attention.”

On this our very first day together, I want you to know about the cornerstones of belief that support Oak Hill Academy. So, what exactly do we believe? We believe in our school … and we believe in community. We shall mold this community and form it throughout the year. As the student body, know that you are not visitors here; you are resident shareholders in OHA. This is your school, and your community. Value it accordingly. What do we believe? We believe in this school … and we believe in transformation. I encourage you to set goals for yourself, and to discover your purpose here as you travel the road to adulthood. Allow us to work with you and to push you as you transform from adolescent to adult. This is a phenomenal community for transformation. Embrace it. What do we believe? We believe in this school … and we believe in moral courage. Together we shall wrestle with the rights and wrongs and messy dilemmas that inevitably come our way. We will encourage you, coach you, and we will even serve as examples for you; and if we disagree, we shall always stand together in this, our community. What do we believe? We believe in this school … and we believe in responsibility. To transform, one must grow. There is no growth without accountability. Be responsible to your school community; be responsible to yourself. Lastly, I also want you to know that you are never alone at OHA. Of course as you look around you know

already there are many classmates surrounding you in this community. And, there are plenty of faculty, staff, and administrators—all here to support you. But know also that there are generations upon generations of alumni sitting (figuratively) right alongside you. Because for 138 years, students from across the United States and from around the world have gathered here on “The Hill” to live together, to learn together, to grow together … right here at Oak Hill Academy. So, I welcome you to this most special place. The OHA legacy, our legacy, your legacy, is tremendous; it stretches from today August 29, 2016 all the way back to August of 1878. Take heed: All of this is yours to embrace; embrace this year with purpose. The Chiming of the Academy Bell

Oak Hill Academy Welcomes Students to School!

l o o h th Sc s n i g e 8 B 13 Year

On Monday morning, August 31st, the original school bell chimed as Oak Hill Academy officially began its 138th academic year. With this new beginning comes the anticipation of a successful year by students and faculty alike.

This year our diverse group of students comes to us from 25 states and 19 foreign countries. All have come together to create our unique community on “the hill where we strive to provide a quality education for all who come our way. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of unpacking, finding room assignments, getting class schedules, and picking up supplies and uniforms a new sense of independence is discovered; new friendships are created; old friendships are rekindled; and another chapter in the history of the school is written. The entire Oak Hill Academy faculty and staff welcomes our students to campus and looks forward to another successful year.

OHA Welcomes Mr. Josh Doan Mr. Doan joins Oak Hill Academy as a resident manager in Ingram Dormitory and assistant soccer coach. He comes to OHA from Niagara, Ontario, Canada where he worked in residential life and athletics at Ridley College. Mr. Doan enjoys basketball, football, politics, theater, and broadcasting. He is excited to be part of the Oak Hill family!

Boys Dormitories Campaign Update We are so close ‌ please help us cross the finish line! The Boys Dormitories Campaign which began two years ago to raise 1.2 million dollars is nearing the finish line, with less than $45,000 remaining to be secured. The Glenda Elizabeth Dixon Hall was completed last fall and dedicated in February. Dormitory two, the Harry Lee Speeks Hall, has now been completed, adding 14 beds to the boy’s side of campus and is housing our 8th and 9th grade boys. The Speeks Hall dedication is scheduled for October 28 at 3:15 p.m. Oak Hill Academy gratefully acknowledges the contributions of Carol & Joe Gigler and Debbie & Tim Marburger, who named this building in honor of their friend, Harry Lee Speeks. We would like to thank everyone who has donated and encourage all of our alumni and friends to join in this campaign. Please note there are still a few naming opportunities for individual rooms ($10,000 pledges can be made over a three year period) available. Every dollar donated to this project is significant, no amount is too small. We are so close--please give today and help us cross the finish line!

Please Consider Joining Oak Hill Academy’s Legacy Associates Society In our efforts to secure the future of the Academy for another 138 years, Oak Hill would like you to consider providing a bequest for the school in your Will. A bequest can help to endow scholarships, provide for special capital projects, facilities, equipment, and other endeavors that are part of the routine life at OHA. Most of all, the gift will help secure the future of Oak Hill Academy by strengthening our endowment. Oak Hill Academy has touched and blessed the lives of many teenagers in the past; it is continuing to do so in the present; and with your help will carry on in the future. By including Oak Hill Academy in your Will, you become a member of the “Oak Hill Legacy Associates,” a vital part of our existence and our future. If you have not already done so please consider naming Oak Hill Academy as one of the beneficiaries to your estate, remembering that every gift no matter the size, makes a difference in the lives of our students. Please contact Tim Henry (thenry@oak-hill.net or 276-579-2619) to discuss becoming a member of the Oak Hill Academy Legacy Associates

Purpose at O H A ! The theme for the 2016-2017 school year is Purpose. Advisee groups will participate in a variety of activities and service projects throughout the year that relate to “purpose” and our four core values – community, moral courage, transformation, and responsibility.

Alumni Weekend 2016 Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 15-17 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open free of charge to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. The Welcome Home Reception at the Alumni Campus Store on Friday evening kicked off the weekend. Saturday morning began with the annual alumni meeting led by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. Class pictures, campus tours led by current students, and lunch in Vaughan Dining Hall followed. The afternoon events began with a brief memorial service to pay tribute to alumni who had passed during the previous year. The tolling of the campus bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. Our summer school students then joined the group for an ice cream social. The Hard Tymes Band provided live bluegrass music throughout the afternoon. The day’s events were capped off with dinner, dancing, a prize wheel, and silent auction at the Mississippi Pavilion in Noonkester Park. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with a continental breakfast in the dining hall and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 14-16, 2017!

“Over the Hill Alumni” Gang The 2016 alumni work week was again a great time for all. The “Over the Hill” Gang made their way to campus for a week of work and fun. They completed their usual gardening tasks, power washed decks, and painted around campus. A special thanks to all of the workers, Don Krauss, Sarah Ussery Sink, Ted Ussery, Mary and Otis Reamy, Jo Ann (Watkins) and Carroll Harvey, Ron and Joan Anderson, Diann Cramer, and Jim Herchenrider. We look forward to the return of the “Over the Hill Gang” again next summer!

Become Part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang A Great Way to Give Back to Your School! Attention alumni and former students – Are you willing to get a little dirty, sleep in a dorm room, eat in Vaughan Dining Hall, laugh a lot, and sweat a little? If so, give Dr. Groves or Tim Henry a call about becoming part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang. The 2017 work week will be July 10-14!

$1 Per Year Campaign Update

In order to have as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA and listed on our Alumni “Honor Roll” the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal for 2016-2017 is to have as many alumni as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report.” We challenge all former students to give back to your Alma Mater in this easy and affordable way. Thank you to the following alumni and former students who made a contribution to OHA between June 1 – September 28, 2016

Oak Hill Academy Third Annual Alumni Homecoming November 5, 2016 Oak Hill Academy’s Third Annual Homecoming will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016. The one-day event will be held in conjunction with the home Gold Team basketball game against Faith Assembly Christian Academy. All alumni and former students are invited to participate in the activities. Plans include a campus wide homecoming parade (alumni are encouraged to be creative by making small scale floats or getting together themed marching groups) and pregame tailgating for alumni and current students. Meriwether-Godsey, OHA’s food service, will provide main course selections. Alumni classes or groups may participate by providing a favorite tailgating staple to share. We will have reserved seating at the game for all alumni and their families. Please visit the “Alumni” page of the OHA web site for the complete schedule and to RSVP for the event!

Gold Team News 2016-2017 Season Outlook Expectations are high on “the Hill” once again for the 2016-2017 Warrior Gold Team. Four of the top six players return from last season’s team that captured the Dick’s Sporting Good National Championship in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Senior guards Ty-Shon Alexander, Matt Coleman, Devontae Shuler, and Lindell Wigginton give the Warriors the deepest backcourt in school history.  Preseason All-American candidate, Billy Preston, should provide the scoring and rebounding necessary for the Warriors to compete for another championship.  Senior Benjamin Davis, Juniors Kenny Nwuba, David McCormack, and Eddy Kayouloud, Sophomore Prince Toyambi, and Freshman Josh Hemmings should provide the Warriors with the depth to tackle the nation’s toughest high school schedule. The Warriors will play teams from ten different states and participate in the prestigious Iolani Prep Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii in December.  The Warriors hope to conclude their season once again in April at the Dick’s Nationals Tournament.
