Welcome to

Oakham School

We are a vibrant fully co-educational boarding and day school for 10-18 year olds, offering the IB Diploma Programme and A-levels. Our location close to Rutland Water, in the heart of rural England, means our pupils are able to enjoy the safety of living and working in a beautifully green campus just a few minutes’ walk from Oakham’s historic town centre and amenities.

Headmaster’s welcome At Oakham, we aim to provide an education that not only acts as a preparation for life after school, but also recognises that these years are precious and should be enjoyable, memorable, and transformative. Our future-focused curriculum and outstanding co-curriculum are underpinned by pro-active pastoral care, which will enable your daughters and sons to flourish at school and long into the future. Above all, Oakham is a welcoming community that values learning and human relationships, which are the bedrock of a successful and happy life. Pupils are encouraged to take part and play their part so that they become committed and fulfilled members of their communities hereafter.

I am proud to be the new Headmaster of this great and grounded school. I hope that you will visit us so that you can see, hear and feel what makes Oakham so special.

Henry Price Headmaster

We are a caring and supportive community Pastoral care at Oakham is outstanding. Key to this is the individual care we provide each pupil. Every Oakhamian is supported by a team that nurtures and develops them intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually. We look after your child as you would expect; recognising each as a unique, talented and special individual.

The houses feel like big happy families Tatler Schools Guide 2020

Every pupil at Oakham, whether boarding or day, belongs to a House. Their House is central to life at Oakham, providing a place of security, support and friendship. Most importantly, their House is your child’s home whilst they are at School. House life is busy and fun-packed with a wealth of social events and interhouse competitions on offer. Playing for ‘House Pride’ and showing ‘House Spirit’ are familiar mantras that all pupils use.

At the heart of life at Oakham lies a culture of mutual respect and honesty. Traditional values, good manners and care for others become second nature. We teach pupils to think for themselves and to establish their own strong moral compass. Oakhamians recognise that talent and success come in all shapes and sizes. They celebrate each other’s triumphs whether the achievement is a national record or a personal hurdle overcome. Oakhamians feel secure, they find where their strengths lie and discover their role in the wider world.

Living with your friends is so much fun William, Form 2

We offer the highest standards of teaching and learning Oakham’s rich curriculum combines innovation with the best of traditional practices. Our ambition is to give all our pupils the ability to learn effectively and independently at school and beyond, building the knowledge, skills and habits of mind needed to succeed and thrive.

By the time they leave us, Oakhamians are confident, intellectually ambitious thinkers equipped to make a difference in the world Head of Middle School

We provide an exceptional learning environment The School’s green, leafy campus in the middle of a small, historic market town offers pupils a safe location in which to live and work. Alongside well-equipped and comfortable classrooms, our academic facilities include a new Faculty of Social Sciences, new Science and Design Technology centres, an Art and Design centre, an art gallery, one of the finest school libraries in the country, our own theatre, and a music school. We also have 40 acres of outstanding sports pitches.

The Lower School (ages 10 -13) Free from the constraints of teaching for Common Entrance or National Curriculum assessment, we are able to offer an outstanding and distinctive curriculum to prepare our pupils for success in the twenty-first century. Since 2018, we have been implementing the IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), for which we are a candidate school. IB MYP is a curriculum that allows pupils to make connections across the curriculum for deeper understanding of individual subjects and global issues. Our Exploring Learning Camp, our involvement in TeenTech, and our FOSIL framework to develop inquiry and research skills are just three highlights that characterise our Lower School curriculum. Small teaching groups allow scope for lots of one-to-one attention and pupil-teacher interaction.

Situated on the separate Jerwoods campus, our youngest Oakhamians benefit greatly from the resources and teaching expertise of the wider School, whilst enjoying their own separate space in which to work and play. With lots of activities and leadership opportunities available, the Lower School provides an excellent preparation for the move to the Middle School whilst allowing our younger pupils a chance to remain children for a little longer before the teenage years begin in earnest.

The Middle School (ages 13 -16) Thirteen year olds arriving new at Oakham or progressing from our Lower School quickly settle into the busy but supportive atmosphere of the Middle School. Teaching is stimulating and thorough, and our pupils are inspired and encouraged to find aspects of the curriculum that really excite and engage them, helping them decide on their all important choice of GCSEs.

This is such a friendly school; everyone is so welcoming James, Form 5

skills, knowledge and experiences that go beyond the exam syllabus to prepare them for their post-16 studies and beyond.

Learning is not confined by classroom walls. It takes place everywhere: in Houses, on a sports pitch, on a stage, in choir or standing on top of a mountain.

We have so many opportunities here; it’s really exciting Maisie, Form 3

The Upper School (ages 16+) Just as no two students are the same or learn in the same way, we at Oakham believe in the importance of offering different pathways for post-16 study. As a result, upper school students choose to study either A-levels and equivalent standalone qualifications or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The journey towards independence really picks up pace and we work with students to build the skills to thrive as the challenges and expectations upon them increase.

Throughout these two years I have become more independent and confident as a person Matthew, Form 7

Our full-time Head of Careers and Higher Education and her team offer in-depth guidance and information on career options, admissions procedures for UK and non-UK universities, student finance and adjustment to Higher Education. Each year we appoint a recent Yale University graduate to guide students who are interested in applying to American universities. The majority of our students go on to top universities in the UK, Europe and the US, including Oxford, Cambridge, other Russell Group universities, medical schools and many more high-ranking institutions worldwide. Beyond School, we have a wide network of Old Oakhamians that helps pupils maintain those links and enjoy a lifelong connection with the School.

We encourage creativity Oakham is an inspiring place where creativity is a way of life. Our Art, Design, Music and Drama Departments consistently produce outstanding work, from breathtaking stage productions to impressive art exhibitions. We have state-of-the-art facilities to enable pupils to fully realise their creative ambitions, and with over 500 music lessons taught a week and 60 concerts performed a year, our young musicians develop their talents both as individuals and in ensembles. Opportunities in the Arts are boundless, allowing Oakhamians to explore their individual talents and express themselves. This was recognised in our latest ISI Report, which states that the quality of work is “exceptional.

For Oakhamians, thinking flexibly and creatively is expected, challenging preconceptions is encouraged, taking responsible risks is supported Parent

We nurture body and mind Oakhamians learn that by looking after their physical health it is possible to experience greater mental and emotional well-being. Physical activity and sport are an integral part of life at Oakham School and opportunities abound, whether for fitness and enjoyment, or for the pursuit of excellence. Oakham has an enviable reputation for excellent coaching and mentoring. We are proud to be a well-recognised training ground for national squads. A typical year will see over 100 pupils progress to the national finals in over 10 different sports. Our full-time Strength and Conditioning coach ensures our top performing athletes are in peak physical condition.

Give 100% in everything you do and you will be amazed by what you

can achieve Sarah, Form 7

We care for all aspects of our pupils’ health and well-being. Our experienced team of catering staff care passionately about giving children a balanced, nutritious diet. They are also highly skilled in catering for pupils with special requirements and can accommodate all pupils’ individual needs. Pupils can choose from a wide selection of food at every mealtime, most of which is sourced locally. From breakfast, through to lunch, match teas, House snacks and then dinner, there’s always lots of choice. For wider health care, we offer round-the-clock treatment and advice in our newly built Medical & Pastoral Centre, run by qualified nursing staff. Pupils have access to a counsellor should they wish and appointments with a doctor, dentist, optometrist or physiotherapist can be arranged for boarders.

We do not confine learning to the four walls of the classroom With over 125 activities, 90 trips and 50 fund-raising events on offer each year, we provide our pupils with a wealth of opportunities to broaden their horizons and extend their learning.
