JOANNE ROMERO

Go Green in the Kitchen

stainless steel won’t leach chemicals into your food the way plastic can.

feel like my schedule is finally winding down. Since January, I’ve taken four trips, wrote and defended my thesis (did I mention I’m a graduate student?), threw my sister a bachelorette party and hosted houseguests, all while keeping up with my writing duties and teaching an undergraduate class for the first time. Needless to say, my home has taken a backseat to other things. Now, I couldn’t be more excited to settle down and start nesting once again. Throughout this whirlwind of a year, I’ve gotten takeout for dinner more than I’d like to admit. It’s a shame because the kitchen is my favorite room in the house. I love to cook, and I can’t wait to get back in there. In the spirit of Earth Month, I’ll be following these tips to go greener.

• Box it out. Have you ever cleaned out your fridge and found food items buried in the back? Designate a box dedicated to quickly perishable or near-expiration-date items. Encourage members of your household to consume those items first. You’ll cut down on waste and save money in the long run.

I

• Go-go gadget. Toaster ovens, microwaves, rice cookers and crock-pots all use less energy than stoves or conventional ovens. Whenever possible, opt for these countertop devices.

There are plenty of ways to go green in the kitchen. Start by assessing your routine and figuring out small ways to make it a little more eco-friendly. Love grocery shopping? Opt for local brands. Little tweaks can make big differences. meals ahead of time. I go to the store and (mostly) stick to the list. This drastically cuts down on the chances of lastminute runs to the store, which saves on gas, as well as spur-of-the-moment calls for takeout, which saves money and waste. Bonus points for buying in bulk. • Ditch the plastic bags. I’m not talking about the bags you use for groceries, although you should ditch those as well. I’m talking about zip-close bags for storing food. Instead, choose reusable, BPA-free containers. Glass, ceramic and

• Decide on the dishwasher. Hand-washing dishes may seem to save resources, but it actually wastes more water than if you were to run a fully loaded dishwasher. Plus, if you use the energy-saving, no-heat drying option, you may even save electricity, assuming you use hot water to handwash. • Plan ahead. When I’m in my groove, I plan the week’s

rooms and kitchens sell their properties quicker than those who do not. With prices starting at less than $380 per tub, you’ll find bathtub resurfacing to be a fraction of the cost of replacement. Quality renters also want quality units where their bathtubs, sinks and countertops are not dull, damaged or rusted. With minimal interruption to renters, units may be used 24 hours after reglazing. While saving cash, time and the environment, a wide range of bathtub refinishing colors and a change of fixtures enables you to modernize the design of a bathroom. ished to look like new with huge savings.

Bathtub refinishing vs. replacement Al Fernandez, owner of Al’s Bathtub Refinishing, explained that not every bathtub can be refinished. Some will have to end up in a landfill while others can be resurfaced. Here is why bathtub replacement is expensive and messy:

• Other bathtubs are not the same size as the new ones made today. that poses a problem in trying to get the tub to fit into the exact same spot as the old tub.

• New bathtubs may be bought for less than $300, but the total price for a complete replacement may run up to $4,000 or more.

• Walls have to be demolished and tiles may have to be replaced. In addition, a plumber, tile setter and perhaps an electrician are needed to put the fixtures back together.

• Old tubs, tiles and walls end up in landfills. Al Fernandez of Al’s Bathtub Refinishing makes modernizing your bathroom on a budget easy with his resfinishing services for tubs, tiles and other surfaces that give your bath a fresh look. | See page 3

Using Al’s Bathtub Refinishing, the whole bathtub restoration process is contained to the bathroom, and there is no trip to the landfills. Refinishing is definitely the better choice compared to replacement if you consider the environmental impact, time and budget. If you are unable to go with refinishing at this time, consider other ways of recycling your old tubs, so as to keep them out of landfills. APRIL 14, 2013 • 3

A company with luxurious choices in home flooring BY KYLE GALDEIRA or more than 30 years, Pergo Laminate Floors have been designed to withstand almost anything life can dish out. Accordingly, American Carpet One serves as Oahu’s leader in providing the superior quality and performance offered by the Pergo flooring line. Pergo’s new luxury vinyl tiles represent the industry’s top-quality laminate technology that blends sophisticated styles and functionality. The product became so popular, that it is now synonymous with the flooring type, much the same way facial tissue is referred to commonly as Kleenex. “When you ask for laminate, you ask for Pergo,” explained American Carpet One sales manager Aaron Okamoto. The flooring system is water-resistant, and serves as an ideal solution for providing an elegant yet durable floor covering in high moisture areas. The luxury vinyl tile also features a durable wear layer for enhanced surface protection and is easy to install without the need for additional equipment. Additionally, the flooring comes with a lifetime warranty against wear-through. Pergo luxury vinyl tile will properly service every room in a home or business, and is also suitable for water-prone areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and bars. However, because the product features a classy, upscale look, it also serves common areas such as living rooms. “There are no limitations to the application of this product,” Okamoto said. The Pergo collection features 10 color varieties, and

American Carpet One stocks seven of them — the largest such selection of this product on Oahu. The flooring system is perfect for both new home and building construction as well as remodeling projects. The planks install easily, and feature an easy-to-use locking system that takes the hassle and expense out of the installation process. “Just lay it down, lock it in and you’re ready to go,” said Okamoto of the simple installation that does not require adhesive. Last year, American Carpet One became the first company in Hawaii to have all its journeymen carpet and flooring installers approved by Certified Floorcovering Installers (CFI), an international non-profit organization established in the early 1990s. The installers are trained and certified with the end goal of assisting homeowners and customers by ensuring that those working on their projects are indeed qualified. Installers working at the company need to pass both written and performance tests in order to gain CFI certification. These certified installers are identified by the CFI seals on both their uniforms and work vehicles. “This product is made for the do-it-yourselfers, but American Carpet One does have a skilled team of Certified Flooring Installers ready to perform the installation should you so desire.” To set up a free consultation, including measurements of a home or business, call 447-2751 or visit www.AmericanCarpetOne.com.

Don’t miss out on the industry’s tax credits A s the most energy-dependent state in the union, Hawaii imports more than 90 percent of the energy it consumes. But recently, with great strides being made in the Islands’ solar and renewable energy sectors, the state is taking important steps to move away from our reliance on foreign energy. Leading the charge, solar power has been responsible for creating enough clean energy to power 18,000 homes right here in the Islands since 2009. Since the state imports an estimated $5 billion worth of imported oil every year, that’s a huge step in the right direction. At the foundation of Hawaii’s shift toward solar energy stands federal and state tax credits that allow families who install solar the opportunity to deduct up to 65 percent of their cost. Recently, the state of Hawaii has enacted efforts to cut those valuable tax credits to homeowners, making today the best time ever to go solar. Solar tax credits set to decline In an effort to ensure that Hawaii continues to wean itself from foreign energy, state house and senate members recently

gathered at the capital with members of the Hawaii Solar Energy Association (HSEA) along with environmentalists and members of the solar industry to advocate for the renewal of the original solar tax credits set in place in 2009. “We’ve made so much progress over the last few years in transitioning Hawaii over to a cleaner energy future, and I firmly believe that the original state tax credits were a great way to help spur that change, said Andrew Yani of Bonterra Solar. “Hawaii is blessed with an abundance of renewable energy, and I would argue that we have the potential to go from being the most foreign-energy dependent state in the coun-

try to one that produces almost all of its own energy ... We could set a new standard for the world right here in Hawaii. “Plain and simple, these tax credits really help secure Hawaii’s future and that’s why we’re here at the capital today. As an extra incentive, we’ve partnered up with Hawaiian Airlines to offer 15,000 miles for new installations.

Don’t wait, go solar today Whether it’s helping to save the environment by reducing Hawaii’s dependence on foreign oil or creating thousands of new jobs in Hawaii, we need solar in Hawaii. And with tax credits set to expire, the clock is ticking. Don’t wait until tomorrow to go solar; secure your energy future today.

Getting the most out of your PV technology I n recent months, solar technology sales have declined on a global scale. “The worldwide slow down in solar is akin to smoke from a smoldering fire,” said Wendell Choy, president and chief executive officer of Solar Wave. “In Hawaii, the administrative rule change regarding tax credit eligibility threw gasoline on this fire and the result was a severe drop in residential photovoltaic (PV) sales.” Despite the setback, those in the PV field remain optimistic. “It appears the legislature will come to the rescue and restore much of the former tax credit policy,” said Choy. It’s clear that solar electric systems remain effective and efficient. “Five years ago, specialists suggested that 21 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) was the level for grid parity, meaning that at 21 cents conventional financing without tax incentives would result in savings for any kWh rate above 21 cents,” explained

Choy. “Hawaii is well above 30 cents.” Despite the government facing severe financial constraints, Solar Wave highly advises those considering PV to buy while tax incentives are in place. Do your research first Consultants at Solar Wave suggested researching and buying from panel manufacturers that have diversified business interests, a multitude of income sources and are well capitalized. “Investing in PV is harder than buying a car because the car is not

The Solar Wave team is made up of designers who are electrical engineer graduates specializing in commercial as well as residential PV design. GRAHAM BUILDERS APRIL 14 • 2013 9

A home for every family member F or more than 20 years, Graham Builders, Hawaii’s premier design+build firm, has helped hundreds of homeowners bring their dream home to reality. From its early years, the locally owned company was a pioneer in developing the concept of multigenerational homes. Graham Builders recognized Hawaii’s unique culture and how we embrace ohana, and has led the effort to design and build multigenerational homes for families. With so many in need of multigenerational living solutions, Graham Builders has teamed up with Graham Mortgage Inc. to provide important financing information and options. Since it is common for ohana to pool resources, families need to be aware of what is involved in the financing phase before they begin on design. “Many families believe that just because mom and dad own the land with no mortgage on the property, that it is easy to qualify for a construction loan, said Charlotte Graham, president of Graham Mortgage Inc. “This is typical where the parents have the assets, but are on a fixed income and the children have the earning power with limited assets and more expenses. Like regular home loans, lenders look at the borrower’s debt to income ratio, credit scores, liquid assets,

employment stability and other factors before a construction loan can be approved. This loan requires more documentation, though, like copies of the construction contract, specs and bond among others. Construction loans pose a bigger risk to lenders because homeowners are essentially borrowing money for something that does not yet exist. Additionally, lenders want the construction project to be successful. They look at the builder to determine his experience level, if the builder has successfully completed similar projects and if the builder is bondable. As a result, construction loans are typically more expensive, since lenders tack on additional interest and points to the loan. “Financing a newly built home is more involved than most homeowners think, which is why we have partnered with Graham Mortgage to talk about the importance of setting a budget, pooling together family resources and financing options at our monthly seminar, said Evan Fujimoto, president of Graham Builders. “We present a complete program to better

Go Forward with Energy When loved ones pass away, clearing the room of their residual energy and belongings can aid in the healing process and allow you to move on in a productive way QUESTION OF THE

able feeling. However, if replacing the bed and mattress is economically impractical, perform a simple cleansing that will serve to balance the energy of both the bed and the room, allowing for a renewal.

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION: My mother-in-law recently passed away after living with us for the past few years, and I wanted your advice on what to do to “clear” the room she was staying in. We miss her dearly, yet know that we have to do something to her room in order to move forward in a positive way. We read your column every week and are interested in your suggestions as to how we can do this.

our situation is common, and I can definitely give you simple instructions on what to do. Clearing the energy of the room your mother-in-law was staying in is easy and can be done in a way that honors her memory and presence in your hearts. It is never too late to clear a room.

Use salt, rice, incense or light • Salt. Salt helps draw out “old” energy. A small mound of salt can be placed in each of the four corners of the room and on the mattress. Leave the salt until you complete the bedroom cleansing, disposing of it outside the home afterward.

• Rice. Rice is thought to draw any old energy from the home’s interior out toward the exterior. A traditional feng shui blessing uses rice. Starting outside your front door, sprinkle rice on the outer perimeter of the home.

Y

Feng shui room clearing If you want to follow feng shui tradition, do nothing to the room until after the memorial or burial ceremony, as that is what officially “closes the life” of the person. If the person was ill prior to death, the belief is that he or she leaves a residue of yin or “negative” energy, considered stagnant, that is best cleared from the room; but even if the death was accidental or sudden, a cleansing is always in order afterward.

Bedroom cleansing On the day of the cleansing, open all the windows in the house, symbolically allowing fresh energy to replace the old. Then you can begin cleansing the rest of the room. Keep in mind that no “rule” says you have to clear out everything, but clearing the home of your loved one’s items will help you and others in the family more easily process the sadness and grief. Never confuse clearing out your loved one’s things with clearing your loved one from your memory. Remind yourself during the clearing process that your loved one’s items are simply “things” and can never take his or her place or the memories

you hold dear. In reality, your loved one’s spirit will live on forever in your heart and memory. The general method Set some ground rules before starting. It might be helpful to work by yourself if you’re feeling solitary and want to focus on what you’re doing. In some circumstances, you may want to include others to help with certain decisions or because you may be feeling emotionally and physically drained. Whether you handle these chores on your own or with help is ultimately your decision. Follow the steps below: In general, when you cannot make a decision about an item, put it aside and decide at another time. • Remove all personal clothing. Most people donate the clothing if it is in good repair, but that decision is personal. Do what is most comfortable and appropriate for you. • Remove or put away personal mementos and keepsakes. Keep those things you feel will honor the person, and put away or donate the rest. • Strip the bedding completely. Many people dispose of the bedding, but do what

feels most comfortable. • Cleanse the room. Use any appropriate cleanser to wipe down the walls and floors, and the inside and outside of the furniture. • Clean the drapes or blinds. Dry-clean the drapes, if you have any, or thoroughly clean the blinds or louvers. • Paint the room. Optional: Sometimes the color of the room is so strongly associated with the unhappiness, or challenge of the final days, that painting the room a different color will dramatically change the energy. What about the bed? The bed holds the energy of the person who sleeps in it, which is why it is inadvisable to buy a used bed, especially one from an unknown person. Sleeping in a bed where a death has occurred will often evoke a subtle and “weird” or uncomfort-

• Incense or Essential Oils. Choose a scent, such as lavender, sage, eucalyptus or mint, that you and your family find comforting and burn or disperse it in the room. Each of these essences lends its special properties to the environment. Eucalyptus is especially excellent relief for healing and for those going through griefrelated challenges.

• Light. Light is a great cleanser. Open the drapes and let the sunshine inside. Place prisms or faceted orbs in the window, allowing rainbows of light to enter the room and brighten the energy.

A shift of energy After you clear the deceased’s energy from the room, it will feel quite different. By clearing and cleansing a room, you enable everyone in the home to more easily move forward in life, carrying the good memories of your loved one in the most positive way.

Home improvements that will lift your soul N o matter how value conscious a homeowner may be, few people ever make a home improvement simply to increase their house’s resale value. People also undertake home improvements to enhance their enjoyment of their home — or to fix a problem, which, in its own way, is good for the soul, too. When it comes to deciding how to spend your renovation dollars, some home improvements can boost both your spirits and your home value. Here are some examples.

Install a skylight The health benefits of natural light are well known. Not only does sunlight stimulate the body’s production of Vitamin D, it also boosts brain levels of serotonin. Lower serotonin levels have been associated with depression, decreased physical energy, increased appetite and elevated desire for sleep. A lack of sunlight has long been associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder — something your dear old grandmother might have simply called “the winter blues.”

And there’s another consideration with today’s tightly built and heavily insulated homes — indoor air quality. According to the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (www.greenguard.org), most of our exposure to environmental pollution occurs by breathing the air indoors. Adding a traditional or tubular skylight — to virtually any room in the house — brings more mood-boosting natural light into your home. It’s also a smart money decision. Energy-saving, solar-powered fresh-air skylights, like those made by Velux America, can be opened to bring muchneeded outside air into your home, providing passive ventilation to reduce humidity and stale air, and reduce cooling and lighting costs. Add a sunroom While you’re thinking about the benefits of more natural light in your home, consider adding a sunroom. One of these light—filled retreats returns more than 46 percent of the initial cost when it’s time to sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report. In a 2012 survey by

the National Association of Home Builders, 52 percent of builders rated sunrooms as “desirable” or “essential” — ranking them higher than other specialty rooms like workout rooms, dens or even media rooms. Sunrooms can be a great way to make your small home feel much larger, without the expense of a bigger, costlier addition. They also speak to our natural affinity for the outdoors, allowing you to enjoy nature year-round. Upgrade your bathroom The trend of bathrooms as a restive

oasis doesn’t show any signs of disappearing. If you doubt the popularity of luxury bathroom fittings, just visit the showerhead aisle in any home improvement store. Options include everything from rainfall shower heads to multi-jet contraptions that promise a spa-like experience in your own shower stall. Add in jetted tubs and amenities like under-floor heating, and it’s easy to understand why real estate pros continue to cite a great bathroom as a must-have for many buyers. Clear things up with tips for organizing BY KAREN NAKAMURA pring has finally arrived, and it’s time to start spring-cleaning and evaluate and organize your storage needs. The first thing you should do is to make a list of everything you want to store. This list will both help you determine how much storage space you need and ensure that nothing gets lost once you start putting things away. Shelving creates more storage easily. It can be portable in the form of freestanding units or permanently attached to your walls. Easyto-install, heavy-duty shelving can be purchased at just about any major home supply store. Many of these units are designed so that you can leave as much room between the shelves as you like, making it easy to get larger and smaller items onto the same unit.

S

One place for storing items you don’t use much is under the bed. Under-the-bed storage containers come in a variety of sizes and styles, including ones with wheels for easy access and to protect hardwood floors from scratches. You can also buy risers that elevate your bed off the floor a few additional inches to create more space. Garage storage has become more efficient. You can purchase built-in storage cabinets with doors so the space looks clean and orderly. There are also modular systems that enable you to choose what features are best for your needs, for example, hanging racks for sports equipment and hooks for tools. Most garages have pitched roofs to keep rainwater from collecting on top, and this space underneath is ideal for items you don’t use on a daily or weekly basis. Store them on platforms or racks that lower and raise either

electronically at the touch of a button or with an easy-to-use pulley system. In newer or renovated homes, a mudroom or drop zone is a very popular feature. This area often has built-in benches, hooks and bins to neatly tuck away jackets, gardening equipment and other items your family uses frequently. Another common feature is

CATHY LEE

Send A Clear Message In any workspace, creating an inspirational environment that delivers the right message to you and your clients may be the key to success

great space can improve your physical, emotional and yes, even your financial health. For almost a year now, I’ve been sharing tips on beautifying and simplifying your space to impact the first two. Today I want to focus on the third. In today’s competitive economic climate, setting yourself and your space apart is very important. Whether you are a smallbusiness owner, a large corporation or an employee with your own cubicle, creating an environment that inspires you and your clients is going to help your future success. I have two quick tips that are easy to implement, no matter how big or small your space is. By pure coincidence, both are drawn from commercial projects involving hallways. Hallways can lead you places!

A

Tip 1: Inspiring statements make a statement. I’ve done several columns recently on the company-wide refresh of Y. Hata & Co.’s spaces. You saw the employee lounge, two lunchrooms and the receiving areas. In this photo, you see the impact that PHOTOS BY JUSTIN DOTSON

>> After

a simple hallway can have. Here we put on a fresh coat of paint, edited and decluttered furniture and other things, and added a takeoff on Gandhi’s famous statement. “Be the change YOU want to see” runs down the hallway in big, bold die-cut letters, with the “O” in YOU a mirror hung at eye level to send a message to employees at all levels: Look toward yourself to make a difference here.

What can you do? There are many stores around town where you can find inspirational messages to place in a lunchroom, hallway, bathroom or at the reception desk. Or find a message you like on the Internet, blow it up and put it in a picture frame. Let your employees and customers know that improvement is a way of company life. Tip 2: Understand your clientele. 680 Ala Moana Boulevard was another project from which I shared photos and tips with you. When Kamehameha Schools asked me to stage the affordable rental project’s

>> Before

model unit, I first thought of whom I was designing for — younger, urban, Starbucks coffee in hand — and then aimed the décor at them. When they walked through the front door, instead of vanilla white on the walls, they saw in the hallway a cool gray wall and accessories that would speak to them: a bench with a cute recycled newspaper dog, a driftwood wall plaque and a coat rack where I hung a man’s hat and a woman’s scarf. If the space spoke to them, chances were higher that they would want to live there.

So, think about who you are trying to attract to your business and be sure your decor and accessories are sending the right message. For more photos from these projects, go to www.cathyleestyle.com. If you’re interested in more on how to create spaces that will help generate success, I’m part of JLH Super Sunday training on Sunday, April 25. APRIL 14 • 2013 RON D. ELECTRICAL SERVICE LLC

A company with electrifying service BY JACKIE M. YOUNG on D. of Ron D Electrical Service LLC in Waipahu credits his mom and his wife, Elizabeth, for giving him his positive, generous attitude, and for helping him build his business into the success it is today. “Both my mom and dad came from the Philippines, and they divorced when I was very young,” recounted Ron, “so my mom, who was a nurse and who had to work 12hour shifts, basically raised me and my brother as a single parent. We were on welfare and grew up with nothing.” “So when I got my first job as an electrician and I found such work as digging trenches so physically exhausting and wanted to quit, she was the one who encouraged me to stick with it, to give it a chance; the day-to-day hardships I was experiencing as a young worker were nothing compared to what she’d gone through to raise us alone. “I found that very inspiring as I started my own business with only a two-man crew. I’m proud to say that we’ve now grown to 15, including office staff.” Ron also looks for this sort of hard-working, positive attitude in his electricians. “I can

(Ron normally only charges $1,100 per panel and is having a special during the month of March that discounts that price even further to only $950.) AKAMAI PEST SOLUTIONS APRIL 14 • 2013 17

Spring into action for a solution to termites A change of seasons brings many things in Hawaii, but the least favorite event that occurs during spring is the beginning of swarm season for drywood and subterranean termites. When termite colonies reach a certain size, swarmers are released to build new colonies. The only positive part of this is that very few swarmers actually live long enough to make it into a crack or hole in a piece of wood to shed their wings, pair up to mate and begin a new colony of termites. Once drywood termites get into a piece of wood, it takes about three years to produce enough offspring and eat enough wood to excrete an amount of fecal pellets that will end up being exposed and showing that a colony exists. Akamai Pest Solutions has been treating homes, doctors offices, condominium proj-

ects and schools, buildings for the University of Hawaii, the state and federal government, care homes and so many unique structures for nine years throughout the state. It offers a safer method to treat drywood termite infestations — orange oil. People are realizing the dangers of tent fumigation and that it’s not always 100 percent effective. The biggest draw to the safer method is that people do not have stay in a hotel, bag food, risk roof and solar damage or hire a security guard to protect their homes. XT-2000 Orange Oil is an organic product that has a capillary affect when wood is treated with it. This means it travels through the infested wood for days so that termites cannot escape it. It will kill adults as well as termite eggs, which fumigation will not, so there is less risk for re-infestation. Customers can be in the structure when

AKAMAI PEST SOLUTIONS contact // 754-3393 web // www.akamaipestsolutions.com it is being treated and it only leaves behind a pleasant orange smell for a day or so. It is safer for children, pets and those who have health and mobility issues. The process begins with a thorough inspection of your home or business before treatment. Akamai provides a warranty with all of its orange oil treatments. An average home will

VISIT ENERGYPROHAWAII.COM FOR MORE INFO

take one to two hours to inspect and a minimum of four hours to treat. The treatment time depends on the size of the structure and how much infestation is present. The company also provides ground treatment service, but uses a regular liquid termiticide because the orange oil will not leave the necessary residual for a long warranty. “Serving Hawaii Since 1981”

How to pace your window projects ith spring here, we start thinking about fun projects as well as necessary upkeep, like protecting against heavy wind and rains that cause peeling paint, broken windows and more. But where do we begin? Obviously we would all love to accomplish these goals before summer is up, but for many of us, time constraints and budgets force us to pick the important project first, which oftentimes is windows. As you start looking for window spring specials, remember what the old timers say: “Be careful; you get what you pay for. With renovations, this often translates to dealing with fly-by-night unlicensed contractors, discontinued products lines or products that have defects and unsuitable parts that you can live with until they, of course, break and malfunction. It could also mean you have products labeled with the infamous “Hawaii clause, meaning no warranty on your parts within 10 miles of the ocean; most homes in Hawaii are. So how do you do it right so it will last and get the right materials and installations for our Hawaiian climate? Pace your window project! to determine what is critical to repair. Many find that not all sides are bad and if this is the case, taking your renovations one side at a time, starting with the worst windows, could free up some of the budget for other pressing projects — possibly around the failing windows themselves.

When considering window types, remember their most important functions: ventilation, heat reduction, water and noise abatement. If you have old jalousies that are failing, before changing to a new window type, consider a Breezway louver window system that has all the benefits of

jalousies when open and none of the drawbacks when closed. If you have jalousies, your home was designed for passive cooling. If you reduce the ventilation in your home by 50 percent — which sliders, awnings and hung windows will do — your free air will be gone and you might have to start paying for more air conditioning. Breezway louvers are watertight, airtight, noise-tight and achieve high hurricane performance ratings while offering safety and security options not readily available with other window types. Breezway locally manufacturers and offers a competitive, “no Hawaii clause warranty. If you are concerned about doing only a few windows at a time, rest assured that Breezway has been manufacturing windows for more than 65 years worldwide with more than 25 years of service in Hawaii.

ALTERNATE ENERGY INC. APRIL 14 • 2013 19

A simple plan to make sure your solar investment lasts A lternate Energy has an important reminder for anyone considering solar: if choosing the right installer is important, choosing the right module manufacturer is crucial. Bruce Ekimura, founder and owner of Alternate Energy Inc., said the recent shakeout in the solar panel manufacturing industry reaffirms the wisdom of his company’s longterm alliance with Mitsubishi Electric. The global electronics leader and its premium solar modules are here to stay, backed by solid warranties, a well-diversified base and generations of research and development. “Mitsubishi modules are here for the long haul,” Bruce said. “There’s a reason Mitsubishi has always been a highly valued and respected brand name in Hawaii — they’ve earned it.” Alternate Energy is a Mitsubishi Elite Dealer, and last year achieved the international distinction of Mitsubishi Electric Certified Installer. The criteria are so stringent that Alternate Energy is the only PV company in the world outside of Japan with this high honor. The partnership includes regular installer trainings and ongoing education conducted by Mitsubishi engineers at Alternate Energy headquarters, ensuring that the high-quality modules are always installed with the highest expertise.

Perry Rosensweig, business development manager for Mitsubishi Electric USA Inc.’s Photovoltaic Division, assured that “Mitsubishi Electric has been a leader in the solar industry for over 30 years. Our company will continue to facilitate the success of our customers by providing the most productive and reliable solar modules in the industry. Mitsubishi Electric is resolute in its commitment to our customers now and in the future.” Bruce said, “Our customers tell me it feels good to know they are working with a longtime, established local company and proven manufacturers when they make this all-important investment for their home or business. We appreciate that. We’ll keep doing the right thing for our Hawaii residents by bringing in a product they can count on, installing it exceptionally well and providing the finest customer service throughout the entire process.”

Designing a dream kitchen on a budget I s the most important room in the house, your kitchen, in dire need of a makeover? Take this quiz to find out:

big on the costly items:

Buy pre-fabricated slabs Buying raw slabs can cost upwards of $20-$75 per square foot, and that typically does not include fabrication. A pre-fabricated slab already has the edge detail, is cabinet-depth and usually comes with a 6 inch splash to match. Pre-fabricated slabs cost from $200 to $450 per slab and are ready to be installed.

• Do you become physically ill from the dated cabinets, counters and tile every time you enter the kitchen? • Does your collection of take-out boxes exceed your number of plates? • Has National Geographic contacted you seeking an “Undiscovered Relics” tour of your kitchen? • Does your family pet growl, attack or hiss at any of the appliances because the appliance growls first? • Do your kids use your kitchen as a dumping ground for unwanted items? • Does your fridge require a Hazmat suit to open it?

HAWAII HOME EXPO New cabinets are possible Years ago, renovating a kitchen on a budget meant keeping your existing cabinets and adding a coat of paint to them. These days, cabinets are much more affordable and are available in all sorts of styles and colors.

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, it’s time to remodel. Although taking on a project like a kitchen remodel may seem daunting, all a remodel takes is good planning. You don’t have to have a Trump sized bankroll to finance the remodel either. Try these hints to save you

G&S SHUTTER DESIGNS APRIL 14 • 2013 21

Create a comfortable setting at home with stylish shutters O ne of the great things about living in Hawaii is being able to enjoy natural light yearround. Yet few of us want the sun’s rays streaming into our homes fullforce all day long. We want to be able to control the amount of outside illumination entering our houses. Plantation shutters are ideal for this purpose. Long popular in the Islands, highquality shutters offer benefits over alternatives such as curtains. Unlike curtains, shutters allow you to vary the amount of sunlight coming through windows without compromising privacy. Shutters are also very easy to keep clean and maintain, requiring little more than a quick wipe with a damp cloth to remove dirt,

dust and grime. One of the best shutter options are Polycore Plantation Shutters offered by G&S Shutter Designs. “I have seen a lot of plantation shutters and I believe the quality of our Polycore shutter is unmatched,” said Gavin Shibuya, owner of G&S Shutter Designs. “The unique design of our shutter is different than all the other shutters out there and the structural strength of our product is unbeatable.” Polycore shutters are the world’s only solid synthetic plantation shutters with a co-extruded aluminum core. This makes it among the most durable shutters on the market. They are both fire-retardant and moistureresistant, making them impervious to

the elements. These shutters are so durable G&S Shutter Designs guarantees Polycore Plantation Shutters will never warp, crack, chip or peel. “We stopped selling all the other window coverings because we knew we had an excellent shutter that was really high-quality that we could sell at a better price than most of the competition,” said Shibuya. “The elegant look, functionality and durability sets the plantation shutters apart from all other window coverings.” G&S Shutter Designs is a local firm with a very hands-on approach. “My business partner Shaun Harada and I handle every part of the process from the sales to the installation,” said Shibuya. “We are the owners of the company and we take pride in our work and we make sure our customers are satisfied.” Despite being a small company, G&S Shutter Designs has tackled some big projects, including Kahala Nui and St. Francis Hospice. The company is currently working with Ka Makana at Hoakalei, a new development in Ewa Beach. Even with such large-scale projects, G&S Shutter Designs remains focused on serving Oahu homeowners. “We have awesome customer service, some of the best pricing out there and a unique quality plantation shutter which we believe every home should have,” said Shibuya.

APRIL 14 • 2013 KAHALA PACIFIC FLOORS

Sorting through all your flooring options D o you want new flooring and have been looking around for weeks, months, even years, but are confused by the multitude of flooring products and manufacturers out there? If so, you are not alone. One thing is for sure when it comes to flooring in Hawaii — the market is very competitive and there are numerous choices for products and installers. Then you have salespeople, many of whom do not have good product knowledge, that come at you with confusing facts, figures and pressure to buy. It’s enough to make a person say, “I’ll stick with my 20 year-old carpet for a little longer.” But there is help. If you are building new, remodeling or just freshening up, Shirley Pai Hilton of Kahala Pacific Floors would like to help you with some unbiased information on products and installation so that you can make the right choice for the person that matters here — you. According to Hilton, the first thing to remember is to always buy quality in your price range. The old adage of getting what you pay for applies doubly in a competitive market. Vendors will try to get your atten-

tion and money by offering an amazingly low price, but that’s because they didn’t pay much for it either. What is usually sacrificed is hardiness and longevity. What good does it do if you have to buy another floor in just a few years? No one is saying to purchase a real wood floor when you can’t afford it, but do shop for a good quality laminate to give you years of satisfaction. Always look for a good warranty on materials, 25 years for home use should be readily available. Another piece of advice from Hilton is to always look for integrity with the company you are dealing with. You may have a written contract, but good customer service is usually not one of the listed contractual obligations. Probably the best way to find a good flooring company or product is to ask your friends, relatives and neighbors

about their own experiences and endorsements. When you narrow it down, look into who the owner is and what his or her background is. Ask the company if they can provide a list of references. Yelp.com and other consumer websites are also good sources of information. You can also do your own sleuthing with a quick check on Google. It is also interesting to note that good, knowledgeable sales people are a direct reflection of the company’s openness and attention to detail. A salesperson should be able to offer you good information that will help you make an informed decision. Always walk away from high pressure,

badgering salespeople who call or text you incessantly. They definitely don’t have your best interests at heart. And Hilton said that even before you venture out into the Hawaii flooring forest, get a basic education by attending her Wood and Stone Flooring 101 seminar, now held monthly due to popular demand. The 90-minute session has been attended by hundreds of Hawaii consumers who always talk about how much they enjoyed it and how much they learned. Kahala Pacific Floors’ next seminar will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. at the showroom located at 926 Kohou St. Call 847-7711 to reserve a seat.
