athrooms may be small spaces, but they are big headaches to design. So many trades. So many details. And so much dust! I was reminded of this during a recent bathroom renovation for my clients, Kim and Rob. The couple had one tiny, unsightly bathroom in their home that was so dysfunctional it was wreaking havoc on their marriage. There just wasn’t enough room for two. They wanted a sleek, up-to-date

bathroom to match the rest of their modern house and had an unused room beside the bathroom. So I decided to take the two drab, dated rooms and give Kim and Rob a gorgeous bathroom that was both functional and luxurious. But I couldn’t do it alone. A full-on bathroom gut like this calls for a team of specialists, and everything depends on one person finishing one part of the project before the next person can SEE PAGE 12

reasons to replace

your windows in 2012

I

s it time to replace your worn-out windows with new Anlin windows? Here are five reasons why you should consider doing so in 2012.

1

Security. Jalousie windows are the easiest to break into. It only takes a thief a matter of minutes to remove the glass and enter your home. Anlin windows have passed the stringent CFE (California Forced Entry) requirements. They come with a tamper-proof, camlock system that allows you to lock windows in the open position to prevent the uninvited from gaining access, but still provide enough ventilation to keep your abode cool.

Maintaining your

granite countertop

G

ranite as a natural stone countertop will greatly enhance your kitchen or bath. Not only is it beautiful, it is also durable. However, because it comes from nature, it has some natural flaws and needs some maintenance to preserve its beauty. Granite is porous and, although very durable, still susceptible to scratches from certain materials.

Protect against stains by sealing Applying a sealer will help protect your countertop from stains. Sealers close up the pores in granite, preventing liquids from soaking in and staining. Granite sealers can be found at most home improvement stores and are fairly simple to use. Just apply, let sit, wipe and buff. To test your granite to see if resealing is needed, pour some water on your countertop and see if it soaks in by turning the area darker. If it beads up without turning dark and

soaking in, the sealer is still in effect. Otherwise, resealing is needed. Although sealers help prevent stains, they can wear out over time, especially when your countertop is used often. It is good to seal every two or three years. Keeping your granite countertop clean will help reduce the frequency of sealing.

Avoid damaging stains and scratches on your countertop with granite sealers.

4 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JAN. 8, 2012

Cleaning up spills It is best to avoid spilling liquids on granite as it will wear down the sealer’s protection. However, in kitchens and baths, spills are inevitable. What to watch out for is spilling liquids that are high in acidity or corrosive-like lemon juice or heavy-duty cleaners. To clean up

spills, use a damp cloth or sponge. For tougher spills of oil or anything sticky, use mild soap and water. Always wipe your countertop dry, which also helps to prevent water marks.

Avoiding scratches While granite is very durable and practically scratch-resistant to utensils, there are some materials that can scratch granite. Diamonds are one material that can scratch virtually any surface and are used in granite fabrication. Also, some common abrasives found in scratch pads also can cause scratches on granite. To keep your granite scratch-free, avoid placing abrasive materials nearby. Call Da Wing Trading LLC at 847-3288 or you can visit www.dawing trading.com for more information.

The right touch According to Lori Dennis, interior designer, author and upcoming star of HGTV’s new show The Real Designing Women, next year’s textures and fabrics will include iridescent metallic woven within fabric, strong patterns and bold prints, modern florals and tailored woven fabrics like tweed, herringbone, plaid and houndstooth. Velvet/ velour, sumptuous dupioni silk and faux fur also will appear frequently. Natural fibers such as bamboo, jute, eucalyptus, cotton, silk, wool and cork will remain popular, adds

Please tread on me Kitchen designer/blogger Susan Serra sees a renewed interest in woven or knotted textures on rugs with “back to basics” motifs that harken back to simpler times. These rugs are easy and cheerful to live with, make a design statement, and

Savvy ways to use credit when redecorating Determine what 3. you can do yourself.

W

hen your redecorating project is done, you want everyone who sees it to think it looks like a million bucks. But woe to your wallet — and possibly your credit — if you overspend to achieve that look. Credit can be a good tool to help you fulfill your decorating dreams, provided that you use it wisely. The last thing you want is to rack up redecorating debt that outlives the stylishness of your room’s new look. Before you give your bank card a workout, or sign up for a new credit card with your local home improvement store, take these credit-conscious steps:

1.

Assess your current credit status. Whenever you’re

considering a significant credit expenditure — like financing a remodel — it’s important to understand your credit and how your spending might impact it. Websites like freecreditscore.com allow you to see your credit score, and provide information on how it’s calculated, what factors affect it and even when is the best

Once you have a cost estimate, and know where you can find DIY savings, you’ll be able to establish a budget for your remodeling project. To prevent overspending, pad your budget as much as 10 percent to cover cost overruns. When your budget is set, you’re

ready to begin. Keep a running log of all expenditures and refer to your budget frequently to ensure your project is staying on track and within costs.

Spending without a plan is one of the surest ways to overspend, especially when it’s a home improvement project. In order to create a plan, you need to know the likely cost of your redecorating project. Online cost estimators can help you get an idea of how much you’ll need to fund your redecorating dreams. You’ll need to consider all aspects of your project, from paint and carpeting to curtains and accessories in order to get the most accurate cost estimate.

Did I mention that there also was a 500pound claw-foot tub to remove? Happy to flee all of the construction, I ducked out for some fresh air. I think a modern bathroom should feel like a soothing spa, so I took a trip to a newly opened spa hotel for some inspiration. The spa has a great lounge that is contemporary, but oozes warmth and relaxation. And details like textured walls and unexpected largescale patterns really make it come alive. I

knew I wanted the same feeling for Kim and Rob’s bathroom. Figuring that the dust had settled, I headed back to Kim and Rob’s to find one big, beautiful, empty room. It was then time to organize things and concentrate on the details. I painted the room a very soft grayish white and put down cool white floor tiles with a slight wood-grain texture. Tiling a bathroom is like using fabric in other rooms — it’s what really gels the style and character. Typically when I open the door to a bathroom, I want to see something beautiful. So what you won’t see when you first walk into Kim and Rob’s bathroom is the toilet. That’s because I hid it beside the bathroom door. What you will see is a stunning wall with two floating vanities in

dark wood. These now flank the window under which I placed a tailored wooden bench upholstered in a large-scale fuchsia-and-white patterned damask. To one side of the vanity wall I set a sparkling white, clean lined tub and shower that blend beautifully into a wall of white, stacked-pattern tiling. The glassed-in shower includes a huge rain

showerhead and a luxurious bench. Next to the shower is the deep soaker tub with integrated lumbar support and a floormounted tub filler. Above the bathtub I decided to go with an especially interesting treatment for the windows. Inspired by a visit to my local hardware store, I got rolls and rolls of large-sized, faceted bathtub chain and fash-

ioned it into a striking curtain that provides both privacy and sparkle. On the other side of the room I used glamorous black, dahlia-patterned tiles to create a dazzling feature wall. Against this wall I placed a classic, wooden antique chest of drawers that brings contrast and warmth to the room. I then flanked it with a pair of stunning sconces.

After adding a few more accessories, including beautiful artwork and an ornate chandelier, the bathroom was complete. Now Kim and Rob have a modern, spa-like bathroom that has more than enough room for two. Just doing my small part for marital bliss.

Cultivate the new-good-life with the power of plants I

n today’s world where news travels at the speed of now, people are searching for balance and purpose and are tapping into the power of plants to cultivate the “new-good-life.” “Plants are powerful,” says Eric Liskey, deputy garden editor for “Better Homes and Gardens” magazine. “Whether it’s enjoying garden-to-table meals or sharing great new plant

finds, people are naturally drawn to plants.” Besides beautifying our homes and gardens, plants play a vital role in our health and well-being. They elicit powerful, positive emotions, revive neighborhoods and influence everything from what we eat to life’s milestones. “Plants are no longer a luxury, but a necessity for our lives,” says Susan

McCoy, trend-spotter and outdoor living expert. “Plants can live without us, but we can’t live without plants.” For a growing army of eco-conscious Gen X and Ys, recycling, repurposing and upcycling is now a lifestyle. A growing army of “urban knights” are creating oases wherever they can find a patch of earth. They’re planting shrubs, flowers, edibles and popup gardens on balconies, in alleyways and on street parklets — even in abandoned buildings. From yard sharing and raising chickens to “step gardening” and harvesting rainwater, urban knights are finding a “new-goodlife” by getting grounded with the earth.

Conscious consumption According to the 2010 Cone Survey, 83 percent of consumers still want to see more brands, products and companies that support worthy causes. “We’ve finally moved from ‘me’ to ‘we’ and consider our earth and each other when we purchase,” says McCoy. American Beauties Native Plants’ partnership with the National Wildlife Federation is a great example of this mind-shift. When you buy an American Beauties’ native plant like the new groundcover, Blue Moon woodland phlox, for example, a donation is made to NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitat Program.

5. Water watchers “There is no single issue greater than water,” says Hall. Recent drought and regional water restrictions are causing us to grow plants, flowers and veg-

etables with less water. Soil amendments like the new SoilReef biochar are considered by many scientists to be the “black gold” for gardening. Its high carbon content and porous nature help soil retain water and nutrients, saving gardeners time and money. Look for EcoCover organic mulch discs in all Bloomtastic! plant containers to help save water and reduce weeds. Hydroponic gardening is hot, allowing plants to grow year-round in nutrient rich solutions that actually use less water.

Save money, decorate with an ‘enlightened’ roof

E

nlightenment isn’t just a state of mind — it can also be an important energy-saving state of being for your home’s roof. By “enlightening” your roof, you can use less energy, save money and dress up the interior of your home at the same time. All roofs protect us, and the interiors of our homes, but they can do so much more. They can be the collection and distribution point for an inexhaustible supply of free natural light and energy. A roof that uses Energy Star-qualified venting skylights, for instance, admits healthful natural light while providing passive ventilation through the natural “chimney effect” of rising air. Another kitchen- and bath-specific issue that skylights help address is the need for privacy. Many modern homes are built on small lots, in very close proximity to neighboring houses. “Light from windows is rarely enough, especially in places where

lot sizes are small,” says Jennifer Powers of design firm Scott-Ulmann. Areas of the home where traditional skylights with blinds might not work — such as hallways, closets and small, interior baths — can still admit natural light through less expensive Sun Tunnel tubular skylights. And optional light kits turn these units into 24-hour sources of light. Low-profile flat glass models that blend unobtrusively with the roof and domed models offer a fast, easy, less expensive way to transform a home with natural light. In addition to light and ventilation from above, if you add an Energy Starqualified solar water heating system, your roof will work even harder for you. And, in addition to monthly power bill savings, these solar thermal systems qualify for tax credits and other savings that significantly reduce the payback time it takes to recover the initial cost. Solar power attic fans are also a cost-effective roof addition that help to reduce
