get some of my best inspiration from the great outdoors. Whether it’s the shade of a flower, the pattern on a leaf or the texture of a strip of bark, I’m a big fan of Mother Nature. So I was particularly energized when Jane and Mark asked me to work on a project for them. The couple and their three children live in a lovely urban house by the lake, and all of them love the outdoors. Their open-concept home has a great casual vibe, with a sandy-beach feeling. Their walkout basement, however, was another story — it had become a dumping ground for old furniture and castoffs. Jane and Mark needed more space and wanted to turn the unused lower level into a multipurpose family room. They just didn’t know where to start. One of the most common questions I hear about design: “Where do I start?” The answer: “Start with what you love.” Since Jane and Mark love the beach, I decided to use a natural design approach to bring harmony and function to their basement, with a rustic, earthy feel. So I chose a gorgeous coastal palette of warm woods, deep

browns, rich blues and pebbled grays. I started by painting the walls a soft, warm gray. We tore up the old broadloom carpet and replaced it with a cork flooring with a wind-swept texture. This was a family room that had to function on three levels. Mark and Jane wanted a kitchen area to handle holiday overflow and summer barbecues. They also wanted a

mudroom space for the kids’ sports gear. And all of them wanted a lounge where they could watch TV. My challenge was to create three different zones in the one space and tie them together. Off to one side I created a U-shaped compact kitchen area and installed a long gray countertop with a beautiful deep sink, a built-in microwave, lots

of Shaker-style cabinetry and a stunning backsplash of glass and stone tile. I also brought in a full-sized fridge/freezer combo, an oven and created an eating area with counter stools. Next to the kitchen I placed the new mudroom that leads out to the backyard. I added a built-in bench along the wall and tall storage cabinets to conceal shoes, boots and

The professionals who ‘fix it all’ L

eft untreated, asphalt pavement will deteriorate rapidly. The asphalt binder that holds the pavement together begins to oxidize and weather soon after installation. Moisture penetrates the asphalt causing further damage and deterioration to the pavement. One of the major ways moisture penetrates asphalt is through fatigue cracking. This condition occurs in areas subjected to repeated traffic loadings (wheel paths) and characteristically leaves the roadway in a chicken wire or alligator pattern. This cracking allows water into the pavement and causes the surface to break down, eventually forming a pothole. Potholes are bowl-shaped holes of various sizes in the pavement surface. Do not wait to fix potholes and other areas that are cracking. These areas of damaged asphalt can easily double within a one-year period. When problem areas arise, WalkerMoody Construction can patch and

CONSTRUCTION CONTACT: 839-2781 • www.walker-moody.com • construction@walker-moody.com fill these areas to extend the life of your pavement. Once moisture is prevented from penetrating the asphalt, this also is an ideal time to sealcoat the surface and prevent deraveling. The best fix for fatigue cracking and potholes is a hot asphalt patch. For areas with fatigue cracking, here is what you will need to do: One, cut enough asphalt so the hole is about 2 inches deep; two, clean the patch area so that all loose debris is removed; three, spray tack coat in the patch area and around the edges,

which acts like a glue and binds the hot asphalt to the current surface; and four, place hot asphalt in the hole and compact. A cheaper solution to removing and replacing is crackfilling. For crackfilling, you need to clean the loose debris and make sure the surface is dry. Apply a hot crack filler such as CrackMaster PL (flexible parking lot formula), and open the area for vehicular traffic within five minutes. For a free estimate, contact Walker-Moody Construction, an authorized installer of SealMaster Hawaii, at 839-2781. The company will come out and review your property, measure the asphalt for accuracy, provide recommendations in a formal proposal, and deliver your project on-time and on-budget. Whether you want a quick fix or a long-term solution, give these professionals a call because they can fix it all.

B

y now, people have come to realize that Hawaii Home Expo (HHE) is a simple one-stop shop for nearly all of their renovation needs. To spruce up the look of their outdoors, customers know they can get pool tiles, stone or tiles perfect for outdoor use, Jacuzzi and swim spas, river rocks or even outdoor grills. For home interiors, people have flocked to the company showroom to view toilets, kitchen and bath fixtures, stones and tiles for flooring, granite or quartz countertops, decorative glass mosaics, and even cabinetry. Recently, they’ve come to know HHE for providing green solutions as well, offering photovoltaic systems and LED lighting solutions that complement the low-water usage fixtures and TOTO toilets. But now, HHE has added one more thing to finally make it easy and painless to move forward with the renovations homeowners always have wanted. Financing. A brand new kitchen or stone flooring through the home adds value, but it

HAWAII

HOME EXPO ADDRESS: 2933 KOAPAKA ST. CONTACT: 695-3976 •

www.hawaiihomeexpo.com does take a bit of capital. A photovoltaic system will cut down an electric bill tremendously, but there is a significant upfront expense to own a system. Now, HHE has turned the tables to favor the consumer. Clients can get a loan amortized over five years with the first two years interest free. After the first two years, the

interest rate becomes 5.99 percent for the three-year period (or less than 2 percent per year). The best part is there are no early repayment fees so if the loan is paid at the end of two years, there is effectively no interest charged. This is especially effective when used for a photovoltaic system, because the money saved on state and federal tax credits can be used to pay down the loan quickly. But if clients want to splurge on something a little more fun, such as a luxurious Jacuzzi, the staff at Hawaii Home Expo will be more than happy to help them out.

ighthouse Solar has made great strides toward being “part of the solution” since its inception in 2006. In a span of only five years, the company has become one of the largest solar- and photovoltaic-energy installers in the nation, with 14 locations coast-tocoast as well as its own brand of cuttingedge solar energy panels. Impressed with Lighthouse Solar’s high business standards and environmentally friendly practices, Mark Kelley decided to open a franchise of his own in October 2009 as a way to help Hawaii homeowners save some of their hardearned money. “Living in the state with the highest energy costs in the country, I felt that helping people save money on energy costs, as well as reducing our dependency on imported oil, was the perfect reason to open up a local franchise,” explained Kelley, franchise owner/operator. “With rising energy costs and the cost of electricity here in the state of

Hawaii, there’s large financial savings available to both residential and commercial customers.” Besides helping reduce customers’ electric bills, Lighthouse Solar saves customers the headache that often comes with home improvement projects by operating under a vertically integrated business model. “We focus on all aspects of solar industry, from design and manufacturing, to technical sales, system design and system installation,” said Kelley. That means no middle-men. Instead, every customer receives individualized service from start to finish, thanks to a staff of highly trained technical sales engineers, who are all certified by NABCEP (the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners), the “gold standard” for PV and solar thermal installation certification. “We collectively have more than 40 years’ experience in the solar energy industry,” noted Kelley, “and we are fully bonded and insured.” In addition to its outstanding customer

Paint!

The quick, easy way to freshen your home for the holidays

W

ith the holiday season coming up fast and plans for entertaining guests already in progress, it may be time to schedule that painting job you’ve been putting off. “People usually want their home to look its best for the holidays,” said Ted Wexler, owner of Island Budget Painting. “And a new paint job is a good place to start. When we look at the same walls daily, we often don’t notice that paint has become dingy or blotchy. Sometimes just repainting the same surface in the same color can make a world of difference … or new trim color could be added to give a room a new look. “Whatever the homeowner’s decision, it’s a good idea to get started

ISLAND BUDGET PAINTING

CONTACT: 255-8612 before adding decorations or new furniture. So, if a job needs to be completed before Thanksgiving or Christmas, it should be scheduled as soon as possible. “It’s never a good idea to wait until the last minute to schedule a job if you want the best service and highest quality workmanship. However, if someone calls us at the last minute, we do our best to meet their needs. And we can usually find a way to fit them in since we have a large crew … and we do not escalate prices just because we’re busy. But it works better for everyone

if we can plan ahead and spend some time with the client inspecting the home and choosing colors.” Wexler noted that, in some cases, preliminary inspections uncover termite damage or rot, which Island Budget Painting has the capability to repair, since the company crew includes skilled carpenters. If the job is an interior, wall paper removal or dry wall, work may also be involved and can be handled “in house.” Wexler, a licensed, bonded contractor who has been in the business for more than 30 years, noted that a painter who shows up at a jobsite for the first time and immediately begins painting may not be the best choice. Wexler has had considerable experience over the years with structures that were not proper-

ly prepped by the previous painter, with peeling and cracking as the result. “Once I meet the client at the jobsite, whether a residential or commercial project, I evaluate the condition of the surfaces and provide a proposal that may only cover painting, if that’s all that’s needed. However, I will also note the cost of prep work to restore the integrity of the wood or masonry. A good paint job not only lasts, it also protects and prolongs the life of the building.” Wexler is a specialist in color selection and can assist clients in making choices and matching

existing colors or furnishings, as well as advise on the best products for the job by taking into account factors such as weather conditions in the area. His crew is experienced in working with difficult job-

sites requiring scaffolding and operating within the parameters set by condominiums effecting access, parking, and times that work can be performed. Call 255-8612 to arrange an onsite estimate.

Artful design pairings create culinary paradise in your kitchen J

ust as matching food with the right wine can elevate a simple meal to the level of a culinary experience, artfully pairing design elements in your kitchen can turn a utilitarian room into a chef’s paradise. Just as you would seek wine selection advice from a sommelier, it pays to get some design pairing tips from a kitchen expert. Diana Schrage, senior interior designer at the Kohler Design Center, offers these tips for mak-

ing successful design pairing decisions for your kitchen:

Sinks and faucets “The experience of cooking in a kitchen where function and beauty are paramount can be as delightful as the gourmet meal itself,” Schrage says. “Think of this when beginning your kitchen redesign.” You may already have a sink or a faucet in mind and can use either piece as your starting

faucet pairings. Will the color of your sink complement the finish of the faucet? Some sink finishes, like stainless, or enameled cast iron, will allow more flexibility when choosing a faucet to go with it.

Cabinets and countertops Design harmony also is important when you’re matching countertops and cabinets. You may have always loved the look of stainless steel, but if your cabinets are clearly country, the warm colors and solid looks of a cast iron sink may be a better fit. If you have the luxury of choosing both elements to

match, your design job will be easier. But if you’re committed to the cabinets you already have, then consider countertop materials that are timeless and universal, like granite or marble. Even if the design of your cabinets ties you into a specific material choice, remember you’ll have plenty of color options available. If your countertop and/or cabinet choice makes a bold design statement, avoid pairing it with distracting wall or flooring choices. A neutral backdrop like cream walls or gray slate floor tile can give countertops and cabinets the room they need to really pop.

point. Identify what it is about this particular sink or faucet that appeals to you so the direction of your redesign becomes clearer and clearer. If your faucet preference runs toward sleek, modern lines, you’ll want to pair it with a sink that complements that design aesthetic such as stainless steel or a contemporary-looking and unde-mounted cast iron product. If you love the farmhouseclassic apron front sink, consider a nostalgic faucet design evocative of this time period; perhaps even a wall mount instead of deck mount faucet. Color and finish also are key considerations for sink and Year Anniversary

ings. “Our market is residential and mid-level. Not upscale houses with rare and ultra-pricy roofing materials, but average, middle-class homes,” explained Clinton Murakami, the founder’s oldest son, who now owns the business. Careful growth and a thorough knowledge of his targeted market have served Murakami well. To ensure consistent quality, he’s selective about the jobs he bids. “(When I look at a project) I ask myself, ‘Can we do a good job for this person? Can I walk away at the end of the day, confident that I’m going to serve them well?’” he said. “If I can’t, I’d just rather not do it.” In a shaky economy, turning away customers might seem counterintuitive, but Murakami says business is booming. Between roofing jobs and his small heavy equipment rental sideline, his team of a dozen men stays busy. The rental sideline makes machines like mini-excavators and earth-moving equipment available to contractors and homeowners who need smaller machines for jobs on Hawaii’s smaller lots. Murakami is delighted by his latest purchase, a miniature JCB backhoeloader.

“Imagine if somebody took a shrinking ray and shrunk a backhoe down to the size of a Toyota sedan!” he said. “You can dig a trench with the backhoe, and there’s a big scooper bucket on the front end. Because it’s so little, you can actually maneuver it around small residential properties.” An embrace of technology has also helped this small company thrive. The foremen and drivers on Murakami’s team carry SmartPhones to help with estimates and scheduling; they use the phones to capture photos and videos that illustrate potential problems. His crew now installs 100 percent syn-

thetic felt paper under shingles, instead of old-school tarpaper. “It’s 10 times lighter and 10 times stronger,” he says. “A lot of roofers don’t use it because of the cost, but it’s better quality for our customers, and safer for my men because it’s lighter.” The late Joseph Cyril Bamford, founder of the company that manufactured Murakami’s awesome new backhoe, had a well-known business principle: “Focus on what you do best, be innovative, and re-invest in product development and the latest manufacturing technologies.” It’s a philosophy that Clint Murakami would likely admire.

New Trends In Home Décor A

mericans are spending more time than ever at home with family and friends. Eighty percent of consumers say they are entertaining at home these days, according to new research from the NPD Group, a consumer market research company. And alongside this newfound enjoyment of their homes, families are rediscovering an appreciation for home décor that enhances their living spaces without busting their budgets. There are several new trends in home décor that can cost-effectively liven up your living spaces.

Creative Storage

Serve & Protect

There’s nothing better than chowing down with the family while watching a good movie. And while you want to preserve that expensive couch from food stains and pet hair, you know Grandma’s plastic couch covers are a serious fashion faux pas. Fortunately, you can now get quilted sueded furniture covers that add extra cushion to your sofa, loveseat or favorite chair while preventing spills from reaching the upholstery. Best of all, such covers are machine-washable.

Go Black

Always been an admirer of sleek high-end furniture, but constrained by a low-end budget? You don’t necessarily have to sacrifice fashion for price. There now are many affordable options, such as The Lakeside Collection’s dark-hued Espresso Furniture set that lets you have a living space that

looks like it was plucked from a design magazine, but without the hefty prices. And if you’re like most Americans and use one room as a living, eating and entertaining space, consider Ladder Shelf Storage. These five-tier shelves can store and display many household items, like books, DVDs, board games, photo

frames, collectibles — even wine! You can mix and match shelves to suit your needs.

Cramped for space? Some trendy additions can help you conserve space and organize your most frequently used items. For example, the hanging jewelry organizer from Lakeside.com has 72 see-through pouches for earrings, necklaces and bracelets and hangs in your closet, allowing you to quickly get what you need. And if you’re all out of bedrooms for visiting relatives, try turning a spare room into a livable space with metal storage solution racks. Consider a clothes organizer that features a hanging rod, shelves for shoes, socks and accessories, and a top shelf for hats, sweaters and more. Energy-efficient home enhancements that provide comfort, savings and style

onserving energy at home can be as simple as swapping incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) or unplugging the computer when it is not in use. However, a home built for energy efficiency can have an even more significant impact on your family’s

energy use. Taking a look at your home from top to bottom and wall to wall can uncover ways to maximize energy efficiency. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 40 percent of global energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions come from the

world’s homes and buildings. Although energyefficient upgrades and home renovations can seem more costly upfront, the investment can help save money and energy in the long term.

LET’S TALK FLOORING with Shirley Pai Hilton, Pres. & CEO, PII There are three main methods for wood flooring installation-nailing, gluing, and floating. Best method for you depends on what you are installing and your type of subfloor. If going over concrete, you can glue down (after sealing slab with a vapor barrier) or do a floating install with engineered wood (glue boards together but not to the subfloor). For wood subfloors, you would usually nail but can also glue or float, depending on material used and budget. Learn more at our seminar next week! Aloha, Shirley. Want to learn more? awaii has the largest number of “flat roofs” per capita in the nation, and along with those flat roofs comes the nuisance of ponding water conditions. Ponding water is responsible for more damage to flat- or low-sloped roofs than any other roofing condition. It creates unneeded stress on any structure, and we all know that it’s just a matter of time before that water finds its way into the building, causing costly repairs and other issues. Traditionally speaking, ponding water has been the Achilles’ heel of all acrylic systems. Even the best fabric-reinforced systems have experienced long-term trouble with ponding water — depending, of course, on how long and how deep the ponded water is. Some manufacturers even exclude ponding water from their warranties. Well, worry no longer. With the installation of Roof Slope, ponding water can be eliminated from the equation in one quick and easy step. Those unsightly “bird baths” or small areas where water and dirt collect can be filled with Roof Slope as well, leaving your roof to stay as white as the day is was applied. mer-rich cementicious material that can be used as a stand-alone repair, or can be applied prior to the application of your White Lava or Tropical Roofshield reflective water-proofing systems, as well as traditional roofing sys-

It’s a quick and easy way to fill low spots in flat roofs and achieve positive slope to aid in proper drainage. Roof Slope provides a durable finish that has the ability to incorporate the appropriate colored roofing granules to match the existing roofing composition when used as a stand-alone repair. Roof Slope is approved by most major roofing manufacturers for use as a leveling material before installing a new roof to eliminate ponding water. It can also be applied on top of almost any type of roofing. Roof Slope can be used over a variety of substrates outside of roofing, such as a deck or walkway. It can be used to create positive slope on almost any surface that may be bucking water. As always, this simple, effective and affordable solution is brought to you by the waterproofing experts at All Weather Surfaces Hawaii. For more information, call 487-3043 or visit roofslope.com.
