Listing my fave solutions Older stains may require more time. • When attempting to loosen a nut that won’t budge, touch a lit candle to it. The melted wax will act as a lubricant. • To maximize storage space in your refrigerator, pantry, closet or any other area, choose square containers over round ones.

ack when MTV played music videos, I always looked forward to this time of the year. Why? I couldn’t wait to see what the top 100 videos of the year would be, and especially which video would be crowned No. 1. I always rooted for those from ‘NSYNC. While I no longer hold my breath for the top music videos of the year, I do get excited for the many other lists: “Top News Stories,” “Biggest Fashion Mistakes,” “Best Photographs,” etc. This week, I decided to put together my own list. In compiling such a list, I’ve discovered that I’ve been fortunate to learn many things when it comes to the home. While some tips were more difficult to grasp than others, my favorites are handy solutions

• If you accidentally break a light bulb while it’s in the socket, remove it by using half of an unpeeled potato. Just remember to turn off the power to the light before doing this. • Defog a mirror with a hair dryer. A blast of hot or cold air should do the trick.

that anyone can implement. Here they are, in no particular order: • Remove water stains from wooden tables with mayonnaise. Cover the stain with mayonnaise and let sit for at least 15 minutes.

open, tie a rubber band around the top for extra grip. This works for every type of twist-on cover, including nail polish bottles.

• Keep your tools free from rust by placing a few pieces of chalk in each compartment that has metal tools or hardware.

• When painting, wrap fixtures such as doorknobs and hinges with foil to protect them from drips.

As I reflect back on 2012 and all the wonderful things I learned and projects I’ve tackled, I get even more excited for what’s to come.

• Keep your bar soap from melting all over your tub/shower by resting it on a sponge on your soap dish.

Make it your resolution to renovate in 2013 BY KYLE GALDEIRA

ust in time for the new year, C&C Cabinets Granite has a special twoweek sale aimed at helping customers keep their resolutions to remodel or renovate their kitchens or bathrooms. The one-time-only sale runs from Dec. 31 to Jan. 12, and offers a host of savings including 5 percent off custom-made cabinets, 10 percent off in-stock sinks and 15 percent off in-stock granite selections when customers present their Hawaii Renovation coupon. Co-owner William Cao encourages customers to bring in their building dimensions and plans so that C&C Cabinets Granite can create a design and generate an estimate. Also, Cao explained that customers who take advantage of the sale can lock in the sale price of their desired cabinetry even if they choose to pick up the order two or three months later.

“It’s a really big sale, just in time for the new year,” said Cao. “Customers have an opportunity to start fresh with a new kitchen or bathroom.” C&C Cabinets Granite is well equipped to aid in the design and completion of both residential and commercial projects. The company has assisted home and business owners with their building and remodeling needs since 2010 while operating out of its Iwilei location situated behind the Costco gas station. “We bring over 25 years of construction experience to the business,” said Cao, whose company specializes in quality cabinetry, granite countertops and stainless steel sinks. “We have a lot of products instock and ready for all sorts of construction and remodeling projects, including kitchen and bathroom upgrades.” C&C Cabinets Granite offers seven cabinetry color choices — available in both framed and frameless construction —

including Burgundy Cherry, Wheat Maple, Cinnamon Maple and Sunset Cherry. The solid wood face and framed cabinets feature plywood box construction and are “well-built, dependable cabinet arrangements,” as Cao explained. “Whether for a new home construction project or kitchen cabinet remodel, we have what you are looking for at a price you can afford.” The family business also features more than 40 varieties of granite, including elegant, classy color schemes like Madura Gold, River White and Rose Pearl that provide practical, durable stone surfaces to accentuate any kitchen or bathroom. C&C Cabinets Granite is also bringing in five new quar tz counter tops in the near future. C&C Cabinets Granite also offers a wide variety of undermount stainless steel sinks. The sinks, which range in style from traditional to modern, use the highest grade materials that lead to a luxurious yet

dependable product suitable for a home or business owner’s lifestyle. With a brushed satin finish, which hides any scratches that could occur over the sinks’ lifetime, the models are constructed with 16 gauge 304 stainless steel and include sound-dampening rubber pads in addition to being fully coated and insulated. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of the “10 by 10” special, which offers customers 10 to 12 pieces of cabinetry in addition to a granite countertop suitable to fit in a 10-by-10-foot room for a combined price starting at $1,999. “We offer better quality, solid wood cabinets than the competitors,” Cao said. “We’re a full-service company and are ready to serve our customers right away.” For more information, and to receive a free estimate and complimentary design assistance, call C&C Cabinets Granite at 853-2088, or log on to CCCabinets Granite.com. Home safety heats up ith the number of house fires on the rise where the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical, you have to wonder, could they have been prevented? Fires are not only damaging to your property, they can potentially put your family, neighbors and their properties at risk as well. If your home was built more than 40 years ago and has not had any electrical upgrades, there’s a good chance your wiring does not meet today’s safety standards as dictated by the National Electrical Code (NEC). The NEC states the requirements for safe electrical installations. It is part of the National Fire Codes series published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Homes of this age will often have three types of wiring: Aluminum (as opposed to copper), knoband-tube wiring and twoconductor wiring. Aluminum wire does not conduct electricity as well as copper does, and has a higher resistance. Over time, aluminum wire can deteriorate, become brittle and result in breakage. Knob-and-tube wiring consists of ceramic knobs

It is a good idea to have your home routinely inspected by someone who is knowledgeable and qualified, and can point out and properly repair any electrical hazards to keep you and your home safe. All G Electric is a

local company with a vast electrical knowledge to help spot potential electrical hazards. Its highly skilled electricians can handle all types of installations and repairs. The company has recently expanded its services to offer customers a comprehensive electrical inspection and testing to evaluate the home’s safety and efficiency. Have your cake and eat it too in a dream kitchen H ave you been wanting to remodel your kitchen, but haven’t had the time to do it? This holiday season, you can finally give yourself the gift you’ve been longing for. Even though many of Hawaii’s kitchens are built into small spaces, getting creative and smartly designing your renovation will allow you to maximize the space. CS Design Builders’ designers will start with your vision and show you all the creative things you can do to your kitchen. As a single point of accountability, they’ll help you throughout the entire build process until the finishing touches are complete. Here are some things to consider when renovating your kitchen: Counter space Plan to cover as much of your kitchen as you can with countertops. A lot of counter space lets you work more comfortably. Plan your kitchen with deeper countertops for more space. Granite is very affordable today, and it’s a great material that is both functional and beautiful. CS Design Builders can even install butcher block countertop sections or islands alongside granite for chopping and preparing food. Storage Squeeze as many cabinets into your design as possible

and plan to place cabinets in relation to appliances. Deep cabinets that can hold >> After plates should be located near the dishwasher or sink. The fewer unnecessary steps needed to complete a task, the smoother the function of your kitchen will be. Waist-high sliding shelves for mixers and toasters quickly put small appliances out of sight while keeping them easily accessible. You can also use a roll-out pantry with shelves that can be pulled out for the items you have, but rolled back into the cabinet. CS Design Builders has a wide variety of creative cabinet solutions. Sinks A small kitchen does not have to have a small sink. A large sink will make it easier for you to clean large pots and pans, and it’s a great place to stash the dirty pots before you have a chance to rinse them. Maybe it’s time you get the kitchen your heart really

ou know the saying, “Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite.” Well, what if you wake up with itchy bites, see black spots on your bed linens, or worse, notice the small, flat, oval and wing-less bugs on your bed? Don’t panic. You’re not the only one with this problem. Bed bugs are running rampant across the nation. The problem has grown to epidemic sizes, especially in all major cities and international hubs. And the premise that bed bugs are a sign of a dirty, messy home is simply not true. “We get calls every day from people who have bed bugs, some of whom are ashamed to admit it,” said Richard Lee of Islander Pest Solutions. “We explain to them how easy it is to get bed bugs. Anyone can get them.” People can unintentionally pick up bed bugs from hightraffic, public areas such as movie theaters, restaurants, public transportation, libraries, hotels, airports and even second-hand furniture stores. Bed bugs hitch rides on clothes, purses, bags, luggage, boxes and back-packs, and spread to places like your home. If you discover bed bugs or see evidence of them in your home, seek help immediately. The longer you wait to treat the problem, the more likely the infestation will increase and spread to other areas of your home. Bed bugs are not known to transfer any type of diseases to humans, but they need a constant supply of blood meals in order to grow to adulthood. This process usually takes five to eight weeks. In an 18month life span, an adult female can produce up to 500 eggs. Fortunately, the bed bug specialists at Islander Pest Solutions know exactly how to treat an infestation.Their philosophy is to treat the entire home or apartment, not just

the single room or area where you believe the problem is occurring. Bed bugs are rarely contained to one location and eventually spread to other rooms throughout a home. Islander Pest Solutions uses a combination of steam and EPA-registered chemicals specifically targeted to eliminate bed bugs. Steam is applied to all types of surfaces including, but not limited to: mattresses, box-springs, futons, head-boards, pillows, sofas, chairs, recliners, desks and drawers. Even electrical outlets near the infestation are checked for hidden bed bugs and treated. The initial treatment usually takes at least two or more hours to complete, depending on the size of your home. Weekly follow-up inspections are performed after the initial treatment to ensure the infestation has been eradicated. Remember, prevention is the key to avoiding re-infestation, so be aware of your surroundings and check your clothing, bags, furniture and suitcases for signs of bed bugs. Reap the benefits of silicone roof coatings W hether you want to install it yourself or have a professional do it, The Cool Roof Store can show you why a silicone-based roof coating may be the last roof you will ever need. Whether you have a flat roof or a shingle roof, silicone coatings can stand the test of time. Look around any neighborhood in Hawaii and you will see a real change taking place — the “Cool Roof ” revolution. Instead of tearing off your old asphalt roof and hauling it to the dump every 10 to 15 years, choose to save money by having your existing roof coated with a long lasting coating that is warranted up to 50 years. Silicone coatings have so many positive points that it’s easy to see why they are growing in popularity every day. In fact, they have become the leading roof system that the Cool Roof Store sells over the last year. Lets look at a few reasons why. Silicone coatings will withstand heavy ponding water indefinitely. Because they are not water-based like acrylic coatings, they don’t absorb moisture. While top-end acrylics — when reinforced with Roof Fabric — can withstand moderate ponding water, silicones are in a league of their own. These coatings will not chalk off over time. Silicone is a “non-sacrificial” coating, meaning it will not slowly shed as the years go by. How long will it last? Gaco, the oldest and largest brand, offers a 50-year material warranty against defects in the coating. If you

THE COOL ROOF STORE contact // 591-1900 address // 575 Cooke St. web // www.leakmaster.com

have your silicone roof installed by an authorized contractor, you get a manufactures labor and material warranty for up to 20 years — the industry’s gold standard. With silicone coatings, the entire roof will not need to be reinforced with roof fabric, saving a lot of time and money. In some cases, homeowners may want to reinforce a few “weak-knee” areas — like the perimeter drip edge or a skylight curb — with roof fabric. However, in most cases it’s not needed. The Gaco Peel and Stick roof fabric is an easy and inexpensive way to do this. Even easier is the Gaco Liquid Roof Tape, a thick, buttery caulking, which is simply applied with a brush. Because you need less material — as little as 2 gallons per 100 square feet if your roof is smooth — the cost is about the same as a quality acrylic roof system, which needs 4 to 5 gallons per 100 square feet. What are the things you need to look out for? If you have a rough, dry “cap sheet roof,”

you may need to first apply a base coat of either silicone or acrylic to seal off the thirsty roof below. Only apply the silicone when the roof is absolutely dry, including any base coats you installed. Silicone is a vapor barrier, which is great as a protection against ponding water, but may bubble if the roof below is wet. Not to worry, though, because any bubbling can be easily and inexpensively fixed by popping the bubbles and touching up with a dab of coating. A coated silicone roof is slippery when wet. The moment it even sprinkles you want to get off the roof before it becomes a slippery slide. Leave those mangoes for another day. Always reinforce loose roof seams and

the entire perimeter drip edge with reinforcing roof tape. All flat roofs have a tendency to unravel over time along the edge and rot the fascia board below. With silicone coatings, you are preparing your roof for 20 to 50 years of service before you have to coat again. With any luck, you will never have to pay to tear off your old asphalt roof again. The cycle of obsolescence will have been broken. That is the beauty of the “Cool Roof ” revolution.

To see some samples of coated roofs up close, visit the Cool Roof Store at 575 Cooke St. in Kakaako. You can also call 5911900 to book a free inspection of your home, or visit www.CoolRoofStore.net.

A Year of Great Beginnings By adopting an “out with the old, in with the new” strategy for your home and environment, you can make 2013 an energetically pleasing year to remember mode.” Then, go from room to room putting in a trash bag everything that you no longer use or need. Stay no longer than 10 minutes in each area. Get rid of expired food items in the refrigerator and cabinets, old newspapers, junk mail, chipped cups, old cosmetics, burnt down candles, broken items, warped Tupperware and other things that no longer serve you. Be quick and snappy. This is an easy step that takes no thought at all.

Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Last year you had an easy-to-follow method for how to close out the year and open up to new beginnings in our homes and in our minds. It was very helpful for me and my family. Can you offer some advice as we turn into 2013?

t’s hard to believe that in just two more days we’ll be saying, “Happy New Year,” once again. I know I am not the only one who felt the swift passing of time in 2012. Well, time is still accelerating, so it’s more important than ever to set your intentions and be present with your life, otherwise you will get to the end of 2013 feeling that you failed to maximize your potential and your possibilities. Your home and environment can support you in what you want to create in the new year, but you must first gain clarity about what you want. Start by looking within.

Ask yourself what you want What do you want for yourself this year? Take some time to think about what’s important to you and then set the intent to create it.The clearer you are, the better and easier your year will unfold. At the beginning of every year, I ask myself what I want to experience in all the areas of my life. Then, just like one would plan a vacation, I take three days off to get clear, envision, develop strategies and plan the year ahead because I know it is important to my success. I am always amazed at how much I collect in just one year, and I am acutely aware

that we are energetically tied to things in our environment. So I set aside an extra two days before the year ends to prepare my home to support me in all of my endeavors in the year ahead by clearing out the unnecessary accumulations in my home, freeing the energy to help me reach my highest potential. Now, if your home is not yet prepared for the new year, don’t worry! Chinese New Year, determined by the lunar calendar, is Feb. 10, so you still have plenty of time to get things ready. It’s helpful to think of the new year as an important and welcome “guest.” By clearing out the old, you physically and energetically create space for this new year “guest.” If you don’t know where to start, use the points below as a guide. Engage every person in the house to get ready for “out with the old, in with the new” feng shui action.

2. Donate Next, in a large plastic bag, put clothes you haven’t worn, CDs, books, figurines and other items with which you no longer resonate. For large items, make a list and schedule a day to remove them from your home. For now, remove the items that will fit into a few bags. Don’t think too much. Just do it. If you have a hard time letting things go, imagine the smile on the person who needs the item more than you do. 3. Clear and clean Clutter creates lethargy and overwhelm. To make space to welcome the opportunities for the upcoming year, clear off surfaces where things have settled — kitchen counters, dining room tables and bathroom surfaces. In with the new 1. Stock up on food Food symbolizes abundance and health. Fill your pantry and stock your refrigerator with the type of food that you want to eat in 2013.

Out with the old 1. Discard Put your mind in “I’m on a mission

2. Bring in a new plant Plants symbolize growth and represent the life force. Bring in a plant from your gar-

den, or better yet, purchase live plants and place them in your home to represent a new and healthy beginning to the year. A display of beautiful flowers is a positive symbol and represents reaching your highest potential.

3. Hang up new calendars Calendars should represent the future, so discard all of last year’s calendars so that you greet the new year by showing you are present and open to the future, not stuck in the past.

4. Freshen up the energy For just a few minutes, open every door and window to let go of the old year and energy and welcome in the new, with a vision to receive the best that life has to offer.

Take action for a great year What you have in your home shows up in the quality of your life. To raise your positive experience of the upcoming year, set a positive intent throughout your home by taking out what you no longer want and bringing in what you do. A happy home supports you in living a happy life. Here’s to a fantastic close to 2012. See you again with more insight to help you in your life in 2013!

Rev up for the new year with a revamp I f you’re tired of looking at your outdated kitchen, but feel replacement would be impractical, you’re not alone. In 2013, consumers will be trying to find the beauty in the beast. Projects that help the old look new will be the next big makeover trend — especially in the kitchen, where remodeling becomes more pricey. “Revamping kits” that refinish countertops, cabinets and appliances are already in growing demand. Here are three top kitchen kits that can easily, quickly and affordably help your existing kitchen look high end. Granite remains the No. 1 choice for kitchen remodels, but the standard cost of granite runs from $50 to $110 a square foot (including installation). While there’s nothing functionally wrong with laminate, Corian and Formica, they’re not always what homeowners are looking for. So if your counter tops need an uplift without a hefty price tag attached, try granite paint. Giani Granite Paint kits allow you to give outdated counter tops a granite look

for $69.95 per kitchen. Each kit comes with the primer, mineral paints, applicators and a demo DVD to help you update your Formica, laminate, wood, tile and Corian countertops. One granite kit can transform an average L-shaped kitchen countertop (or about 16 running feet) in one weekend and the process is easy enough for a first-time painter. The included specialized sponge replicates popular styles of granite, and the highgloss finish adds durability and shine. Further granite countertop paint information and availability can be found at gianigranite.com. Modern cabinets are what everyone needs to bring their kitchen from “oldfashioned” to “in fashion.” However, throwing the old cabinets out may seem drastic. If your cabinets work just fine but the color is keeping your kitchen in the ’90s, tr y Nuvo Cabinet paint. Nuvo Cabinet paint is a one-day process that does not require any cabinet removal or a separate primer. Just apply two coats of your desired Nuvo shade and within hours your cabinets will be ready for use.

Each kit covers 100 square feet, which is the standard cabinet coverage for the average-sized kitchen. One kit costs $69.95 and can be purchased from nuvo cabinetpaint.com. Appliances are a big investment and many times are purchased all at once to achieve a harmonious, matching look.

This holds many homeowners back from making the jump toward the most desired appliance look, stainless. New Liquid Stainless Steel paint is made with 100 percent stainless steel; and kits are available for refrigerators as well as ranges and dishwashers. The stainless “Range and Dishwasher” kit gives a

Kitchen cabinets can open up new possibilities

itchen cabinets are intended to be functional, but few design professionals or homeowners leave the choice simply at that. Otherwise, cardboard or plywood boxes might suffice. Instead, kitchen cabinet choices have become hotly debated as the

options have grown. This is true whether for a kitchen, bathroom, family room, bedroom, wine cellar, closet or any space in a home. A major impetus has been the realization that kitchen cabinets can add an important aesthetic cache to the kitchen, thanks to the wider

variety of styles, materials, trims, hardware and pulls available. They’ve become part of the jewelry of a house— what makes a house a home. People are putting in an inordinate number of cabinets in all rooms these days, even in window seats because they increase space. For the kitchen and beyond, consider new cabinetry.

ast week, I told you how the glint of gold always makes me think of Christmas, while the shine and sparkle of silver are all about the new year, filled with bright new beginnings and celebration. This week I’m presenting tips about how you can take white-hot metallic and add some sparkle and shine to your space — and not just for this New Year’s, but for years to come. Just as gold is a warm metal and works fabulously with warm colors, silver is a cool metal that’s ideal for cool colors such as blues, purples and pinks. Some colors can be both warm and cool, so just keep in mind that cooler, brighter shades usually work better with silver. If a color is lightened by white, it’s generally cooler, while if it has some yellow, orange, red or brown, it’s generally warmer. For example, in this bedroom I designed in Kahala, the homeowner wanted something calming, romantic, vibrant and unique. So I chose purple, the color of passion, as an accent color on the wall behind the bed. Cool colors prevailed: The surrounding walls were painted in a very light lilac, the furniture was a dark ebony, and the bedding was white and charcoal with a pop of silver in an accent pillow. To make sure the room felt fresh and clean, the lamps were made of white glass. But I wanted to repeat the silver and have something interesting and unique on that purple wall. So I made an abstract design with images of birds or clouds in varying sizes and mounted them at varying depths of half an inch to a couple of inches from the wall. These silver accents created interest, dimension and just the right touch of subtle bling for a one-of-a-kind, relaxing and dramatic bedroom. Now, how can you incorporate silver into your space during the holidays in a way that can last well beyond the new year? Just as I told you about gold, there are

incorporate silver without the modern feel, go for a more weathered look as in pewter or brushed silver. Antique silver or pewter will add a more eclectic element. A super-easy and affordable way to add silver is with picture frames. There are tons of options out there from a wide array of stores, with looks that range from pounded metal or scratched wood to shiny or matte, with ornate or clean lines. Next to black, silver is probably the most accessible picture frame. Use several of these to showcase your favorite family photos or create your own unique works of art by blowing up images to make your own art wall with various-size frames. Want to be a little bit more subtle? Go with black frames and add silver matting. It’s the holidays, the beginning of a new year. So enjoy your celebrations and bring on the sparkle and shine!

so many different textiles and fabrics in silver: bright silver fabrics, ikats with silver in them, faux animal skins and pewter and silver textiles that can be used to reupholster or create accents for your furniture pieces or for window treatments. And as I told you last week, it’s easy to

add the cool bling of silver by spray-painting branches or even dried leaves. A great thing about silver is that it can have a reflective quality. If you have a little bit of silver and want to enhance that, adding some mirrors or glass to a space can help give it a very modern feel. To

rom shopping and baking to decorating, life gets hectic during the holidays. But regardless, put this first on your “to-do” list: Childproof the house! Don’t spend your holidays in the emergency room. Take a few precautionary steps now to protect your children so they, too, can enjoy the season: When your kids smell the aroma of baking goodies, they naturally want to be in the kitchen. Unless you can supervise them carefully, keep them out. The kitchen is one of the most dangerous rooms in your home. But just in case your kids do sneak into the kitchen when you’re not looking:

• Unplug electrical appliances, wrap up the cords and put them away. Also, place covers over all electrical outlets. Both cords and outlets are sources of electric shock. • Put guards on stove knobs so your children cannot turn them on when you’re not looking. As you know, children can get hurt in any room of the house, not just the kitchen. So for their protection: • Don’t let children under four have hard candies, nuts or similar seasonal foods. Hard, round foods such as candies, nuts, grapes, popcorn, raw carrots and even raisins can get lodged in children’s throats and block the passage of air .

A solar company dedicated to helping the community E lementary school teacher Marilyn Hamano went looking for a solar power company the way a student might solve a class problem. “I had been researching photovoltaic systems for over a year, and I was determined to have one installed on my home by the end of 2012,” she said. “I looked at a lot of different companies and what they offered were all very similar.” But when she looked into Bonterra Solar, she found what she was looking for: a company that only dealt in quality products, provided good service, answered all of her questions and, as she discovered, a company with a heart. “I read about how Bonterra does pro bono work for Habitat for Humanity, the volunteer organization that builds homes for the needy at no cost,” she said. “I really liked that Bonterra gives back to the community.” Habitat for Humanity: a natural fit for Bonterra Bonterra Solar founder and principal Andrew Yani has made philanthropy a key part of his company’s mission. “In 2009, we began providing a free solar water heating system for every Habitat for Humanity home built on Oahu,” Yani said. “Giving back is part of our philosophy. The sun gives us unlimited electrical power and we pass on those blessings to our customers and charities. That is especially important at this time of year when our thoughts turn

to those in need.” Bonterra also assisted the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in developing Kaupuni Village, the first netzero energy community in the nation. And Yani has recently become a Hawaii March of Dimes board member. Employee’s dedication extends to schools Hamano commended Bonterra employee Chad Horiguchi for not only educating her on her new PV system and answering all of her questions, but for going a step fur-

ther and offering to talk to her elementary school class about solar power. “We were having a Career Fair and Chad talked to our students about his career as a ‘solar consultant’,” she said. “He was a natural with the children and soon had them eagerly asking questions and interested in the whole solar-energy issue.” She said she was happily surprised at Bonterra’s total commitment to educating the public about green energy and providing quality products and service. “Even though I only needed nine panels, Bonterra made me feel like a million-dollar client,” she said.

Positive referrals speak to a fun, worry-free remodel F ounded by president Carl Gaumont in 1987, Pacific Isle Contractors Ltd. has been building and remodeling homes in the Islands for a quarter of a century. Gaumont described the company as a small contracting business that has found its niche in residential remodeling. Projects range from kitchen and baths to large-scale renovations, additions as well as new-home construction. While Pacific Isle Contractors has completed many additions and renovations over the years, older homes built in the 1930s and 1940s are some of its favorite projects. “We renovated a number of older homes in the Nuuanu and Manoa areas and appreciate the architecture of that era,” said Gaumont. “Some of these homes were considered ‘tear downs’ by other contractors, but after careful inspection, we found them quite structurally sound. “You need to put things in perspective. If you’re going to spend the money on a large scale renovation and 10 percent of that cost is necessary for repairs to the structure, you’re probably ahead of the game once you figure in the replacement costs of one of these beautiful older homes.” Oftentimes the clients will be living in the home while work is being done, so they are kept abreast of scheduling and the scope of work to be performed at any given time to minimize disruption to their daily lives.“Communication is a high priority,” Gaumont said. “We want homeowners to know what to expect on any given day, so we can address any issues that might arise. Our goal is to help you attain your dream home.” Here is some feedback Pacific Isle Contractors Ltd. has received from its clients: It has been eight years since Pacific Isle Contractors did a very challenging, major renovation and addition to our very unique Kailua home. We were not only extremely happy with the results, but loved the experience of working together with Carl and our architect, Paul Sheffield. We are now looking forward to working

The answer to your roof-protection needs W ith more than 20 years of experience in Hawaii’s roofing and solar industry, Surface Shield Roofing’s Shon Gregory has seen the business change as materials and technologies are adapted to the needs and priorities of property owners. “Our clients are becoming increasingly concerned with rising energy costs,” Gregory said. “Traditional technologies and materials are still in use, but we’re finding that more and more people are looking to advancements in roofing to help defray their costs.” Because of our state’s dependence on imported oil, energy costs in Hawaii are the highest in the U.S., and the need to reduce the price of cooling a home or business has led to innovations. “The market demands that we work with the latest materials and technologies,” said Gregory, “because our clients want to save on their energy costs over the long term.” “Cool roofing” is an approach that has a variety of cost and environmental benefits, and the number of home and business owners adopting it is growing rapidly.

Because such coatings are applied to existing roofing substrate, demolition that sends waste to a landfill is unnecessary. Buildings using cool roof materials and technologies can save up to 25 percent on energy costs. Roof coatings are seamless and when installed correctly, can solve roof leaks on almost any type of roof substrate. Fieldapplied reflective roof coatings can extend the useful life of most roof substrates, keeping the surface cool and providing a level of protection from the sun and weather. Roof coatings can add 25-plus years to the service life of a roof and reduce the amount of discarded roofing materials that end up in landfills. “Large commercial properties were the first to embrace cool-roofing technologies because of the size of their buildings,” explained Gregory. “But in the past years, we’ve seen a major spike in the number of residential property owners opting to go with roof coating technologies previously used mostly by the commercial sector.” Surface Shield uses a variety of roof coating products. Here are a few benefits of one of the highly efficient coatings

An ‘ideal’solution for your PV needs ith more than 200 solar companies to choose from in Hawaii, it’s easy to get overwhelmed when shopping for a photovoltaic (PV) system. Homeowners are advised to do their research because anyone can install PV systems these days, but not everyone is truly qualified, and not all systems are created equal. 2012 is wrapping up with many anxious to get their PV systems installed before the state tax credits change. But what about those who couldn’t get on the 2012 calendar? It depends on how you look at it — waiting may have actually been in your favor. A revolutionary, thin-film panel is now available in Hawaii. Risource Energy founder and president Darren Furumoto selected Solar Frontier CIS panels with Hawaii homeowners in mind. These innovative, Japanesemade panels are ideal for Hawaii homes because of their proven “light-soaking effect,” quality and price point. Furumoto is the first in Hawaii to offer these modules for residential PV installations. What makes an ideal PV system? A system that will offer the most return for your money while providing safe and enduring quality. “Customers should be able to rely on their solar provider as an expert,” remarked Furumoto. Each system from Risource

Energy is custom-designed to maximize energy conversion and output. Solar Frontier panels are not only aesthetically pleasing — they’re safe and effective. They sit sleek and black on the roof, they’re lead- and cadmium-free and they’re proven to handle Hawaii’s salt air conditions. Local and worldwide data confirm that Solar Frontier panels harvest energy about 9 percent better than crystalline panels. solar industry. Furumoto is “grateful to Bruce Ekimura” of Alternate Energy Inc. and “fortunate to (have) gained first-hand knowledge and experience working with a wide range of modules and inverters” during his time spent as operations manager and lead installer at Alternate Energy Inc. The new name Risource is derived from the Japanese word “risou,” which translates to “dream” or “ideal” in English. Furumoto has the “risou” of a quality installation at a reasonable price for homeowners. A fresh name felt right and reflected the transition from being a smaller division of highly respected industry leader Alternate Energy Inc. With a new name and fresh logo, Risource Energy is ready to take the PV world by the helm. him much, because most days he’s up on the roof working. One thing is certain — Furumoto is well-qualified in PV installations. He’s one of eight NABCEP-certified installers on Oahu, and one of 20 in the entire state. NABCEP certification is esteemed in the solar world as the gold standard in certification. He’s worked on thousands of installations throughout his nearly 20 years in the

A home upgrade that glistens or most, remodeling a kitchen includes a complete change of cabinets and countertop, maybe even appliances. If your cabinets are still in good condition, but you want to improve your kitchen in some way, replacing your old countertop with one made of granite is a great choice. It is a good investment and will definitely change the atmosphere. Granite has high tolerance to cold and heat. You can safely place hot metal pans from your oven directly on the granite top without the need for a hot pad. Although, you will have to be wary of placing hot glass or ceramic dishes on it as they may crack if the countertop is too cold. This happens because of the difference in temperature and it is called thermal shock. As for cold items, you do not need to worry about condensation that may make your granite countertop have a dark spot if not properly sealed. Any condensation that may happen in the stone will fade away in an hour. Granite countertops may be used as a cutting board, too. Because the hardness of granite is greater than steel, you do not need to worry about kitchen knives scratching your granite surface. Although, it is not recommended to always cut on your granite countertop, as it will actually make your knife dull overtime. Another way to add to your kitchen or other rooms is to create a standalone island with cabinets as the base. It will be a great place to sit, eat, work, study or hang out. Along with brand new cabinets and countertops, there are other ways to improve your kitchen to be more functional and last longer. Pull-out drawers are a great add-

on for existing kitchen cabinets. With metal ball-bearing tracks and solid wood dovetail drawers, you will never again need to worry about hard-to-reach items in the back. Call Da Wing Trading LLC at 847-3288 or visit www.dawingtrading.com for more information.

The key to a restful night of sleep: your bedroom W hether snuggling in for the night or just trying to take a nap, your environment plays an important role. From noise reduction to lighting, there are a few easy ways you can turn your bedroom into a tranquil oasis so you can count “Zzzs” and not sheep. “A third of the adult population suffers from insomnia from time to time, but only about 6 percent meet the criteria for an actual sleep disorder,” said Dr. Christina Brown from the Florida School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Tampa. “In a good number of cases, getting to sleep and staying asleep is a matter of your surroundings.” Kristina Held, assistant professor of interior design at The Art Institute of Charlotte suggested areas of the bedroom to evaluate in order to improve your sleep:

Lighting Hang several layers of curtains to block out light at night. Get rid of your phones, TVs and iPads while in bed. The artificial light will interrupt your sleep cycle and keep your brain

for a lifetime • Offer alternatives that save money It’s been a pretty mild year for Hawaii in terms of hurricane threats and high winds, but nevertheless, it makes sense to go outside and check out your roof. Here are some tips: • Take a pair of binoculars to get a close-up look. Walking on your roof is not recommended. • Look for broken or missing shingles or tiles. • Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris. • Check for signs of molding. • Look for signs of leaking on the inside of your house, check out the ceilings and look for water stains. • Look for signs outside your house and check under the eaves/overhang for water stains.
