Here’s a pot-of-gold idea

is the season for out-of-town guests. In the past two weeks, I’ve hosted my brother and some friends from high school. I live in a small space, and when you combine that with extra people and lots of luggage, you begin to realize just how precious an inch or two here and there can be. It’s made me think about opportunities for space overhead, especially in the kitchen. While my cabinets are full and the shelves are stocked, some clever rearranging may make

all the difference. Pot racks, for example, have a way of commanding attention without weighing down a room, as they allow for light to shine through empty spaces. Pot racks are also relatively easy to install. First, find the joists in your ceiling. This is the

most important step. Use a stud finder. Remember, a pot rack is designed to hold pots and pans, so it will need to support some heavy weight. Installing it into drywall is not recommended. Measure the distance between the joists and purchase a rack based on this measurement. When looking at placement, remember to account for height. There should be ample room for people to walk or work underneath the rack without hitting their heads. Also, make sure there is enough room around the pot rack so that it doesn’t obstruct cabinet doors. After you purchase and put together your rack, measure where you will hang the rack along the joist. Mark the spots off with a pencil. Make sure to pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions as well. Some say to add a 2-inch-by-4-inch piece of wood to the

joists for extra support. Next, drill pilot holes for the eye hooks and twist them in until the threads go behind the wood. Once these are in, hang the rack using the ceiling hooks. Then, hang your pots and pans and enjoy your extra space. The entire process can take up to a half a day or more, so remember to plan ahead.

Preserving pavement where it matters most N early six months ago, Mayor Peter Carlisle joined the Department of Facility Maintenance and the Hawaii Asphalt Pavement Industry to demonstrate several pavement preservation methods the city will evaluate as part of its effort to improve road/parking lot conditions. The goal of pavement preservation is to treat a road/parking lot that is in good condition to extend the life of the asphalt pavement. As Mayor Carlisle put it, he would like to “protect our roadways to help stop potholes and other problems before they even start. Since then, the city has been using these methods to better Hawaii’s asphalt.

Alakona continues to slurry in the Mililani Mauka area A slurry seal is a mixture of aggregate, emulsified asphalt (cationic quick set emulsion, CQS-1h), fillers and additives. This surface treatment can be used on newer or older pavements. It will fill the surface cracks, stop raveling and improve skid resistance. Additionally, it will waterproof the surface and reduce oxidation deterio-

ration. This product becomes the wearing surface and “slave to vehicular traffic.

Crack filling The Department of Parks and Recreation has started using pavement maintenance including two projects at Hanauma Bay. It applied hot crack filler and two coats of OptiPave Plus sealer. The upper parking lot was applied by Alakona and the lower parking lot by Walker-Moody Asphalt Maintenance. Crack filling is the most basic of pavement treatments. Once moisture penetrates the asphalt, it will deteriorate the underlying layers, eventually causing failure. SealMaster Hawaii provides cold- and hotpour materials that can be used as a first defense against pavement deterioration by stopping moisture. Seal coating A seal coat is an application of asphalt emulsion — often mixed with coarse angular sand — to an existing asphalt surface. In addition to providing a protective barrier to stop water penetration, MasterSeal Ready-To-Use or OptiPave Plus sealers will also protect

against oxidation, oils and gases, and it will beautify your asphalt by providing a uniform black color to the surface.

The Department of Education (DOE) also started maintaining pavement recently at Pauoa Elementary School. The application of a seal coat on this project will prolong the investment lifetime. The project also involved applying hot crackfiller and two coats of MasterSeal Ready-to-Use sealer. All products used in the demonstration and by the city, District Performance Review and the DOE are available at SealMaster Hawaii. These pavement maintenance techniques have been used in the private sector for a number of years and SealMaster is happy to provide its products to the city, county and state.

Go with the flow to add flexibility to your home T alk to any contemporary architect, remodeler, interior designer or homeowner, and you’ll find one of the hot topics these days is “flow.” Gone are the days of floor plans burdened by closed-off, claustrophobic rooms, each designed around specific functions. “Today’s new homes and home remodeling projects embrace far more open designs, allowing for unprecedented levels of flexibility. These floor plans permit gatherings to spill out of the dining room, family room or living room into adjoining spaces with no loss of sociability, or take on a welcome aura of privacy when needed,” said Michael Myers, Marketing director for Johnson Hardware, manufacturers of pocket, sliding and bifold door hardware. They also enable interior spaces to serve new purposes with each new day.The result is a new kind of American home, one where rooms assume different

personalities as occasions and spatial requirements change. Sliding doors are the smart designer’s answer in creating openness within spaces that can’t accommodate hinged, swinging interior doors. In today’s homes, sliding doors have been given a literally and figuratively larger role in room decorating. They can glide into place to create walls between rooms or easily glide back out if wide open spaces absent of walls are desired. “Consider, for instance, the value of sliding doors during the holiday entertaining season. Large family gatherings may require adding a leaf or two to the dining room table, making that dining area a trifle too confining. A wall of sliding doors can expand the dining room into the family room or living room, permitting the party to accommodate the arrival of unexpected guests,” said Myers. The same functionality ensures the kitchen,

increasingly seen as the “heart of the home,” can serve as a cozy and intimate space for family dinners and neighborly coffee clutches, then morph into an expansive setting that permits easy mobility of hosts and guests. Making all this possible are advancements in hardware that eliminate issues of sticking and derailment. Johnson Hardware’s 200MD

Multi-Pass Heavy-Duty Door Hardware makes customization easy, allows for three-door applications on three tracks and accommodates doors weighing up to 400 pounds each. To learn more, visit www.johnsonhard ware.com. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

Make your tub look like new again here was a time when a bathtub in a home was considered an item of luxury. But today, a bathtub is the centerpiece of most bathrooms and an important part of our way of life — so much so that many homes have more than one. Apar t from being a highly effective way for you to get clean, a bathtub makes for a wonderful place to relax. By luxuriating in a tub with hot water, you can literally soak your worries away, not to mention the various aches and pains in your body. So what can you do if an old friend like this becomes old and worn? Call Al Fernandez of Al’s Bathtub Refinishing. Most people dread the day when they have to decide what to do about their old bathtub. If you watch any home improvement television show, the host will simply replace the bathtubs when renovating bathrooms. There is nothing wrong with that, if you have the money. That’s where you have to be careful in assessing your options. Buying a new bathtub is a classic “buyer beware” situation. You can walk into any store that sells

bathtubs and see many for less than $300. This will lead you to believe it is not expensive to replace your old tub. What you don’t consider, however, are the hidden costs that can burst your budget. Along with the cost of the bathtub itself, you also need to consider the cost of a contractor, demolition, removal, tilers and a plumber.

Suddenly, instead of paying just $300 to get a new bathtub, the total bill becomes $3,000 or more. And if things don’t go smoothly, there can be additional budget busters. What can you do if you are working with a limited budget? Believe it or not, there is another option. Look into refinish-

ing your bathtub instead of replacing it. The cost savings could be significant — up to 75 percent less — and it can be done in your home in less than one day. Fernandez can make your old, worn-out bathtub shine like new again. His company can repair all the chips and cracks in your tub, give it a new surface and even change its color to match the decor of your bathroom. With 20 years of experience in Hawaii, Al’s Bathtub Refinishing can do it all: fiberglass, ceramic tile, countertops, porcelain and more. It also can do spot repairs on rusty old tubs and cracked fiberglass tubs, or do chip repairs on brand-new tubs. Call Al’s Bathtub Refinishing for a free estimate today at 679-8297, email alsbathtubrefinishing@gmail.com or visit our website at alsbathtubrefinishing.net.

Create a healthier home with DIY home-improvement fixes Y ou might not be aware that your home may pose some hidden risks for you and your family. But you don’t need a fat budget to give your home a safer and healthier boost. After all, there is nothing more important than keeping your family safe. Hazards may be lurking in your home, and for $100 or less, you can make the home improvement precautions needed to protect your family from household dangers. Danny Lipford, home improvement expert and host of the nationally syndicated show “Today’s Homeowner,” recommended these budget-friendly DIY projects for a safer and healthier home: Mount smoke detectors There should be a smoke detector on each floor and in or near every bedroom

in the home. Installing them is as simple as mounting them 4 inches from the wall on the ceiling. Smoke rises, so opt to place the detector at the highest point of the ceiling if you have an angled ceiling.

tion system. Filtrete Brand makes a full line of them, such as the High Performance Drinking Water System that comes with a dedicated faucet and will provide your family with cleaner, better tasting water.

Secure heavy furniture and appliances Children are susceptible to bookshelves, televisions or other furniture falling over and causing harm. Use furniture brackets or straps to secure dressers, the stove audio equipment and more to the wall to ensure passersby are safe from falling and tipping items.

Install a water filter If you’re concerned about lead, VOCs, microbial cysts and pharmaceuticals in your tap water, or even if you just don’t like the taste or smell of it, install a DIY water filtra-

Install carbon monoxide alarms Carbon monoxide — an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas — is a result of improperly vented or defective home systems such as heaters, furnaces and fireplaces. Carbon monoxide does not rise to the ceiling like smoke, so the alarms can be mounted anywhere, such as plugged into wall outlets or affixed to walls and powered by batteries. Avoid home break-ins during the holidays BY KAREN NAKAMURA

his year’s holiday season promises to be full of shopping, gift-giving, decorating and celebrating with friends and family. Unfortunately, it’s an equally busy time of year for home burglars. Nearly 400,000 burglaries occur in the United States in November and December each year, according to the FBI. The National Crime Prevention Council recommends homeowners take extra precautions to protect their homes at this time of year. “During the holidays, homes are often filled with expensive gifts, the good silver is out and people are in a festive mood — they aren’t thinking about home security the way they should,” said John Heppner, president and CEO of Fortune Brands Storage and Security including Master Lock Company LLC. Follow these tips and enjoy a safer and happier holiday season: • First and foremost, lock up! Whether it’s a short trip to the grocery store or a longer haul to finish some holiday shopping, make sure your doors and windows are securely locked. Never leave boxes from expensive gifts laying on the curb for trash pickup. Consider crushing them and placing them in a large, black garbage bag.

• Remember that nothing is more effective at deterring a burglar than the impression that the home is occupied. Make it look like it is by installing timers on your lights. • Keep your garage door closed at all times. Keep the door from your garage into your home locked as well. • Be sure that your trees and shrubs don’t hide windows and doors. Blocked entrances can make it easier for burglars to get into your home unnoticed.

and chances are they will be more likely to watch for suspicious activity around your home while you’re away.

Karen Nakamura is executive vice president/CEO of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii.

• Leave spare keys only with trusted family members or neighbors you are close to. Do not hide them outside. Burglars are smart enough to look around and know the common places people hide keys. • Be certain that tools, ladders and other objects that could be used to break into your home are securely locked up inside the house. If you will be away for a lengthy period, entertain the idea of a house sitter. • You may also want to consider a home security system. Check online or look in your phone book to find companies specializing in home security. • Most experts agree that your neighbors are your best defense. Get to know them

Change will do you good Are you in a stagnant environment? Get a jump on the new year and flourish by making small yet inspiring changes around the home

Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: (This week’s question is from Alice to you!): Now that we are just about a week away from the end of a year, can you look around your home and identify what is “old” and what you are ready to reposition or even get rid of?

he middle of the holiday season is the easiest time to consider conscious change in our environment because our homes go through a shift in energy when we put up our trees, menorahs and other decorations. What are you ready to move or let go of in your home? Ponder that over the next week or so. What you decide will help you tremendously in the upcoming year. You don’t want stale energy to follow you into 2013, do you?

Moving the energy During the holidays, we reorganize our homes to accommodate festive decorations, so the energy gets moved around. Not only does it refresh the environment, but it helps us get into the holiday spirit. Usually Christmas or Chanukah changes made to the home are uplifting and positive for all in the environment.

Change and flow Feng shui’s underlying theme is based on change and flow. Many homes I visit are beautifully arranged and decorated, and some might even say “feng shui perfect,” but they have looked the same for dozens of years, not necessarily supporting change for the inhabitants. I like to remind my clients that everything in our lives is in a state of constant flux. We evolve and grow in so many ways throughout the years that we are more than likely not the person we were five years ago, last year, or even last month. If your environment stagnates because of a lack of change and rigid structure, you lack the foundation to flourish and support

that space, can I put something new there? • What can I change at the entry of my home so that all who enter are greeted with a sense of renewal? What intent do we want to set for the new year and how can I symbolize this?

change as easily. In other words, the environment needs to change in order to support the changes you want to make. What can I change? Here are a few things to consider over the next couple of weeks, especially when you are putting away the holiday decorations and “getting your house back to normal.” No time is better than the present to consider new options. Ask yourself these questions: • What can I donate or get rid of while things are in a state of flux? (Prepare for this by keeping some large boxes and bags available to pack things in, and remove them from the house before the 31st.) • When I remove the Christmas tree or the menorah or other holiday décor, rather than put back what was originally in

home, you aligned and adjusted it to suit you and your family at that time. You may have had the perfect duvet, a wall color that suited you, pillows that matched perfectly with the painting on the wall, a new carpet, even new plants, but whatever it was, it was perfect at that time. It is important to acknowledge change in our lives. It keeps us in the moment and mindful of our journey. Things are always great until it is time to change. Even our concept of what is perfect changes as we do. Are you now tired of the color on your walls or of your bed linens, or have the pillows lost their appeal? Stay present and make choices that better align with who you are in the now. If you find yourself making many changes, it just might mean that you are evolving at a rapid pace. Use your home to support your life. Change doesn’t have to be dramatic; even the smallest bit of change counts. Give yourself the gift of support through your home!

Small change in my home makes a big difference! The other day, a friend gave me a beautiful 2.5-foot topiary as a gift. Shiny, happy home Go with the glow this season with the introduction of metallics to your surroundings

s a little girl, I was always attracted to shiny objects. Maybe that was because I grew up in a workingclass family and there wasn’t much money for those pretty things that I wanted oh so badly, especially during the holidays. Since then, the glow and shimmer of gold metallics and warm candlelight have always brought to mind Christmastime. And the cool, bright glisten of silver gets me excited about the new year and new beginnings. So in this two-part series, I’m going to give you tips about how you can incorporate a trend that’s hot in home décor: the unmistakable sparkle of metallics. First up is Christmas! Gold, antique gold, bronze: All these metals are warm in nature and work beautifully with warm colors. Remember those? I’ve talked to you about the color wheel, something we all learned about in school. How can you incorporate warm hues of red, orange brown and earth tones into your home not only for the holidays but throughout the year? When we remodeled the Vavuls’ home in Diamond Head, we chose to accent one wall in the sitting area off the master bedroom not with paint, but with a cork wallpaper that has a glint of gold peeking through. It’s from Phillip Jeffries of Architectural Surfaces in Gentry Pacific Design Center. The wallpaper creates a warm and interesting backdrop for our punee and ties in well with our gold lotus lamp. The warm colors that accompany this range from reds to chocolates and a soft black. It’s an ethnic, modern space that glistens with the right amount of gold highlight. Other possible gold elements for a room? Think accessories, drawer pulls, candlesticks and yes, even wallpaper. And how easy is it to bring in some pillows or re-cover a seat cushion? Yes, you can choose a warm color, or you can go lit-

eral with a yellowish-gold fabric. But why not do it in a metallic? There are so many amazing textiles out there now that can give you the warm glow you’re looking for, like a gold metallic basket weave print, crocodile or snakeskin prints, or even ikat prints with a splash of gold. These textiles are super-hot, and it’s easy to create one-of-a-kind pieces from seat bottoms to seat backs or bolster cushions or even ottomans.

If you don’t want to go quite so big, how about making changes in small ways? Look for some gold tea lights or candlesticks. Don’t have them in gold? Paint them! Especially if you find something affordable in wood, the easiest thing to do is take a can of spray paint and paint on your metallic. If you want it to look a little more weathered, then while the paint is still wet, take a cloth and brush a little off. Voila! And how about some organic branches?

Get some very simple curly willow or other natural branches, spray on a coat of gold paint and suddenly you have a tall, dramatic natural centerpiece for just pennies. So there you have it: ways to add the glow and glisten of gold so that a touch of Christmas magic will make your house sparkle all year long.

Equipped for the job lternate Energy Inc. has just achieved Mitsubishi Electric Certified Installer status. It is the only photovoltaic (PV) company in Hawaii — in fact, in the entire nation — to do so. This fall, several Mitsubishi representatives made the trip to Hawaii to visit Alternate Energy job sites in progress all over the island. Once the inspections were complete, Mitsubishi’s senior engineering manager Jim Kadiaka notified Alternate Energy founder Bruce Ekimura that, “Alternate Energy has demonstrated a high level of technical proficiency and overall professionalism. Mechanical, electrical and all other aspects of your company’s projects met or exceeded industry standards and safety requirements. “Every homeowner expressed confidence and satisfaction in favor of Alternate Energy over other competing quotes, and they were pleased with the knowledge of your salespersons. I congratulate the Alternate Energy organization on this fine accomplishment.” Mitsubishi has just launched its new MLE 260 series modules, with high-power output, high reliability and Mitsubishi’s renowned quality. At this time, Alternate Energy — a Mitsubishi Elite Dealer — is the only PV provider in the U.S. to offer these new panels.

Is it time to re-roof your house? H

ow does one go about buying a new roof? It’s not something you do every day, nor is it a home improvement that people know a lot about. You not only have to select the correct roof product, but you have to select a competent and fair-minded contractor to install it. Some people think with their wallets, while others simply buy what their neighbor bought or take the recommendation of a friend. These are all good ways to buy — if you’re lucky. These methods often lead the homeowner to a temporary roof such as asphalt shingles, concrete composites or wood shakes. These roofs appear to be less expensive, but actually cost much more because of the need for multiple re-roofs and frequent and costly maintenance. Clay or concrete tile is extremely heavy and the composites are highly porous. Both roofs are subject to damage from high winds or foot traffic. On the other hand, high tensile aluminum used to form the Country Manor Shake (CMS) roof system produces an affordable, light weight, energy efficient roof with unsurpassed durability and strength. Plus, it does not degrade over the years and now comes with a cool, HI-R infrared

and allow you to walk on the roof without damaging it. The unique four-way interlock of CMS roofs actually holds together tighter as wind speeds increase. The natural, staggered appearance will add value and curb appeal to your home. Your home will be fire-safe because the roof is non-combustible, and CMS is lightweight, which reduces the chances of structural collapse in the unlikely event of an interior fire. This time around, buy a permanent roof

with a manufacturer’s lifetime, non-prorated limited warranty, which covers the cost of both materials and labor. Investigate a CMS roof and imagine how attractive it will make your home. The company has specialized in the installation of this system for more than 24 years. It has re-roofed thousands of single-family and multi-family homes around Hawaii.

Hot topics in PV energy

ince it is the final stage of the fourth quarter of the year, activity in the solar energy market is literally “heating up.” Permits from the City and County Building Department are at an all-time high. Also on the horizon are governmental actions with far-reaching effects for consumers. It is widely believed that the Hawaii State Legislature may be contemplating revisions to the tax code, which will restrict and/or reduce energy tax credits in an effort to combat the state’s budgetary shortfall on tax revenues. A reduction from 35 to 25 percent is rumored to be in the works. Some believe that any such action in the 2013 session will take effect in 2014. According to a recent news article, the Hawaii State Tax Department unilaterally implemented limits to the tax credits that homeowners can claim starting in the 2013 tax year. While legislative action is necessary to reduce the percentage or dollar amount of the allowable credits, the department has limited the number of photovoltaic (PV) systems that may be claimed per qualified residence per tax year. The department has placed a limit of one PV system with a cap of $5,000. At this point, there is little time left for consumers to take advantage of the nation’s most generous tax credit program. Consumers contemplating PV systems in 2013 and beyond would be wise to consider this: even without tax incentives, PV electrical systems are still attractive from a financial perspective. A $30,000 system that saves $200 per month equals an 8 percent annual rate of return ($2,400 savings divided by a $30,000 cost equals 8 percent). The less competitively priced designs still return at least 5 percent annually — have you checked the rates on money-market funds or treasury bills lately? The more efficient and aggressively priced systems can return nearly 10 percent. The fact remains that even at reduced incentives, returns are extremely high. With a current federal credit of 30 percent ($9,000) and a $5,000 state cap, the return on the above example is $2,400 divided by $16,000, which equals 15 percent. There is nothing shabby about that kind of result. Consumers who undertake action as quickly as possible benefit by saving on their utility costs sooner rather than later. After all, every dollar paid to the power company is money that will never be recovered. But don’t deceive yourself. Hasty action has the effect of not doing one’s “due diligence” in making the wisest choice in contractors available. In the end, the “wrong” choice could cost the consumer thousands. Is it time for consumers to “pull the trigger” and “go green?” Emphatically, yes! If the homeowner is financially able, “beating the clock” for higher tax credits after doing one’s “due diligence” makes a lot of sense. There is one caveat: Based on increased advertising on television, radio and print media, it seems that many current solar companies are new players that were not in the busi-

ness a year ago. A good number of them are likely marketing organizations that subcontract their installations. The fullservice contractors seem to be a dwindling breed. Hi-Power Solar is one such “full-service” contractor, offering sales and service for solar water heaters as well as PV energy. Principals Ron Romero, who has more than 20 years of experience in the solar business, and Matt Adams, who has more than 16 years of experience, offer an excellent balance of top-notch components, expert installation and competitive pricing. They are familiar with City and County building codes and adhere to special homeowner association rules. Joining the solar revolution is likely to provide a financial bonanza for the consumer. It pays to be a little cautious in choosing the most appropriate system design and to explore the financial costs, which impact your pocketbook.

Take control of your temperature at home B y opting for an efficient, split-ductless air conditioning system, you can guarantee the ideal climate for your home or office. Systems sold and installed by the Aire Conditioner Shoppe are available in a variety of styles and price ranges. “The best time to service your existing split-ductless system is between the months of November and April, so when the warm weather hits, it will continue to operate with high efficiency,” said Aire Conditioner Shoppe owner Neil Wiedemann. The latest split-ductless systems provide zoned comfort and are engineered to install quickly and easily. These systems available from the Aire Conditioner Shoppe, which specializes in Fujitsu and Mitsubishi, provide both heating and cooling with the push of a button on the remote control. They also provide individual temperature control throughout your home or business so each room, zone or floor will be the temperature you set. Concerned about air quality? These systems have the capability to filter out dust, mold spores and microorganisms. The Dry

Mode helps to control humidity levels, even when cooling isn’t needed. Other standard features include Sleep Timer Auto Changeover and 24-Hour Timer Cold Prevention. Concerned about appearance? The cooling-only wall-mounted units, designed for single rooms, are slim and stylish. Indoor units have a clean, aesthetic design and are powerful, though small and shorter in length than competing units. The variablespeed compressor helps systems adapt to shifts in heat load caused by afternoon sun. Concerned about noise? These units are so quiet you won’t even know they’re on. How about cost? “The operative word is ‘efficient,’ ” Wiedemann said. “Old or malfunctioning air conditioning systems are energy hogs that don’t do the job effective-

ly and run up your electricity bills. The air conditioning systems available at the Aire Conditioner Shoppe are the newest models that incorporate the latest technological advances.” He pointed out that split-ductless systems can be just as efficient as central air conditioning, or more efficient in terms of energy savings, depending on the lifestyle of the homeowner. Wiedemann, who has been in the air conditioning business since 1979, sells and installs split-ductless systems on Oahu, as well as portable air conditioners. He also sells less expensive window units that are

often the choice for apartments, condos and houses. “Even the window air conditioning units, which are generally what you see in older apartment buildings or townhomes, have been extensively improved both in efficiency and appearance However, the tenant and/or owner needs to obtain permission from the management company and/or apartment owners association to install any type of air conditioning,” he added. Call for an appointment first. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe gives free estimates on new installs of split-ductless air conditioners.

Getting rid of ground termites BY RACHEL BREIT

ith more than 50 years of experience, the team of Richard Lee and George W. Ofsonka III at Islander Pest Solutions has the answers to your questions regarding those always-pesky subterranean “ground” termites. Q: Who needs to be concerned about termites? A: Considering the damage that feasting termites can have on your home — your largest investment — all homeowners need to be concerned. Don’t be the homeowner who isn’t concerned about this problem until your house is being eaten because, reality is, either you already have termites or sooner or later you will have them. Subterranean “ground” termites numbering in the millions threaten the structural integrity of your home and will lead to costly repairs. Q: Do these termites leave signs? A: Yes. Besides seeing the flying termite swarmers, or “alates,” during the spring or even late fall, ground termites create underground tunnels or above-ground mud tubes made of mud, feces or debris, which can usually be found along your exterior

ISLANDER PEST SOLUTIONS contact // 487-3936 address // 98-138 Hila Place #12 web // www.islanderpestsolutions.com

foundation wall, floor joists or interior walls. These mud tubes protect them from dehydration as they travel from their nest in the soil to their food source — your home. Q: How can these termites be contained around my structure? A: Termites can be controlled in two ways — with a termite baiting system or a “conventional” liquid treatment. Both are lethal and non-detectable by termites — controlling the ground termites through ingestion and contact — but are safe for children and pets. Q: What is a termite baiting system? A: Termite baiting systems take advantage of the termites’ natural foraging behavior. Baited stations are placed in the soil around the structure and monitored for termite activity. Station installation requires no drilling (into the concrete that may be around your home), and is suited for homes on hillsides, homes surrounded by concrete

or slate tiles, or homes located very close to water. An annually renewable service warranty comes with the termite baiting system. Q: What is a “conventional” liquid treatment? A: A liquid treatment involves applying a termiticide mixture by spraying directly on

the soil and/or deep into the soil (where termites live) through holes drilled or trenching done along the foundation walls of your home. This creates a continuous treatment zone around the structure. Q: When should I decide to have my house treated for subterranean “ground” termites? A: Don’t wait! You should invest in a treatment if you’ve noticed signs of ground termites or even if you haven’t, to prevent them from infesting your home in the future. The liquid termiticide mixture has been proven to remain in the soil and be effective long-term. Q: Why should I choose Islander Pest Solutions? A: Although we’ve only been in business since March 2010, we have quickly gained the confidence of many homeowners because of our communication and education before during and after each ground termite treatment. There are many different construction types, so based on our extensive knowledge gained through the years, we develop a treatment plan specifically for your home. We use the best, most effective products and back them up with a six-year ground termite service warranty (which all homes qualify for) or a 10-year ground termite service warranty (restrictions apply).

here are so many things to consider and do before, during and after a renovation. Having a contractor control the flow of the project will help make sure the project goes according to plan and finishes within the time promised. CV Construction LLC is just that type of company. A recent project involved a homeowner and serviceman who, just before he was

deployed, inquired about our services. When I went to complete the free estimate, he had already been deployed, so his wife walked me through their renovation request. I then drafted an estimate on site and sat down with the homeowner’s wife and explained the estimate from beginning to end. Complete your dream kitchen with cabinetry F using custom cabinets with affordability is more than just a slogan at Tenibac Kitchen Cabinets & Casework (Tenibac). The company conceived the idea that custom cabinets can be competitive with store-bought cabinets and at the same time offer “door styles unlike the other companies.” It sells door styles that are different, with more “Hawaiian style” to them. The team at Tenibac has the design expertise necessary to help you create what will turn an empty kitchen or an existing space into a dream kitchen that’s both beautiful and functional. Thinking outside the box gives the team the advantage of coming up with outstanding kitchen designs that begin with creativity and a practical design that fits your needs. Customizing your cabinets means the company can make your cabinets deeper, taller, shallower or customized to better fit your needs and kitchen. Each customer and project is unique and presents its own set of challenges. It takes more than putting boxes on the wall to make a kitchen functional and practical. Listening carefully to customers allows Tenibac to work through

Here’s your silver lining W

ith the holiday season upon us, EnergyPro Hawaii hopes that you have a very festive and safe holiday season this year as we look forward to 2013. With the year ending, it’s time to make your New Year’s resolutions. We hope that if you did not get a photovoltaic (PV) system in 2012, you’ll make it your resolution to get one installed in 2013. Many PV companies are wrapping up their installations for this year and allowing last minute residents to get their systems installed to claim their PV systems in the upcoming tax year. The state tax depar tment has already announced changes that will affect the tax credit for 2013, and as expected, the changes to the determination of eligible systems will ultimately reduce the amount of tax credit you might receive. As you may have heard, there are many opponents to the changes set forth by Gov. Neil Abercrombie. Suits and petitions have been filed against the state and the future of tax credits is still cloudy. As mentioned above, residents will see a reduction in the state tax credit, but that should not deter you from installing a PV system. Residents could

still see a 50 percent savings on their purchase, making any PV installation worthwhile. Granted, the return-on-investment time will be longer, but the average sys-

tem should only take five to seven years to pay off. As an added incentive to install your PV system in 2013, EnergyPro Hawaii is

offering special deals to customers until the end of February. Paired with our 0 percent, 24-month financing program, now is a better time than ever to take advantage of these offers. Call EnergyPro Hawaii today at 5962890 to schedule a free consultation and estimate for your future PV system.

Blend affordability and style in the kitchen A

s 2012 winds down, Golden Cabinets & Stone is offering a huge end-of-the-year sale during which customers can take advantage of savings ranging from 40 to 50 percent off the entire stock of cabinetry and counter tops. Golden Cabinets & Stone has gained a reputation for offering quality, affordable cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers for more than five years. Owner Wayne Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to residents looking to either build from scratch or remodel existing spaces. “We have a big sale going on, and customers can save plenty of money,” Cao said. “We have big savings on everything in stock.” Cao noted that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stocked with inventory, and “plenty of choices” are available for customers shopping for everything from cabinetry to hardware — including handles 24 • DECEMBER 23, 2012

for an attractive yet functional touch. In addition to the vast array of options currently available, customers can look forward to considering two new cabinet styles and five new countertop varieties that arrived recently. “When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into a new, more functional kitchen, it is most satisfying seeing their face and hearing how much their whole family enjoys this new element in their home,” Cao said. “We’re licensed contractors, so we provide full service from installation to painting.” Golden Cabinets & Stone operates out of a new location to serve its customers who have come to appreciate the company’s professional customer service, quality products and “unbeatable” prices. With a 3,000-square-foot showroom at its KalihiPalama store — located at 1299 Kaumualii St. — Golden Cabinets & Stone offers a multitude of cabinetry in addition to 50 varieties of granite and quartz countertops, 30 choices of sinks and high-quality porcelain floor tile varieties — a perfect

combination when renovating a bathroom or kitchen. Other possibilities for utilizing cabinetry include modifying office areas, adding closets or sprucing up a garage or lanai with various storage elements. Golden Cabinets & Stone offers seven wood selections that are used in designing cabinetry. The cabinets are constructed from solid wood doors and plywood boxes, and they provide customers with unsurpassed quality not available from competitors that offer particle or pressboard cabinetry. The company is continually offering new cabinet styles along with countertop selections, which are in stock to aid home or business owners with completing projects as fast as possible. Luxurious Cherry is a popular wood selection when it comes to designing cabinetry, and it offers consumers a fine-grain wood that features a smooth texture and satiny feel. The wood closely resembles coveted Koa wood in appearance, and is usually finished with a medium or dark stain to bring out the wood’s mahoganyred tones. Cherry is integral in defining the

Shaker, Mission and country-style cabinets offered at Golden Cabinets & Stone. Other styles of Cherry wood offered at Golden Cabinets & Stone include Royal Cherry — the company’s top-of-the-line wood option — as well as Golden Cherry, which features a lighter tone of wood with the same strength as its darker alternatives. Golden Cabinets & Stone also offers multiple elements of customization, including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets as well as the option of including glass panels as an added artistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if customers provide the measurements for their desired cabinetry, Golden Cabinets & Stone can create a 3D computer rendering of what the finished product will look like. “We truly appreciate each and every one of our clients who have given Golden Cabinets & Stone the opportunity to fulfill their cabinetry needs,” Cao said.
