The Price of Kidney Disease on a Child Elizabeth Price smiles with glee as her father pushes her on a swing. Nine year old Ellie then frolics across the lush grass behind their Tantulus home. What isn’t noticeable behind her effervescent personality is a rare kidney disease. Ellie was born with an extremely low level of amniotic fluid. Doctors had to use an ambu bag to stimulate her first breaths and found she had Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease (ARPKD), a condition leading to enlarged kidneys. Doctors at Kapiolani Hospital were unsure about Ellie’s ultimate survival, but allowed her to go home four days after birth. They gave her medication and monitored her blood pressure. An evaluation by a pediatric nephrologist from Stanford Hospital said it was unlikely she would survive her first year without dialysis and ultimately a kidney transplant. Today Ellie is still in and out of the hospital, as she constantly battles high blood pressure. Medications are a fact of life for her.
