ENERGY Supporting the leading lady in your life s a follow up to and to balance the tips I gave to women on positive feng shui action to best support the man of the house, today’s article addresses what men can do to best support the woman in their lives. Steven Hawking, renowned theoretical physicist who has solved many of the universe’s mysteries, publicly admitted that the biggest mystery to him is still women. Men, I know that sometimes trying to figure out what makes the woman in your life happy is at best complicated and at worst a never-ending puzzle, but light is at the end of the tunnel. These simple rules can bring balance to your relationship:

Yin and yang First, some basics: In Asian philosophy, yin and yang represent the “feminine” and “masculine” principles. The origin of this philosophy came from the observation of nature and the environment, where “yin” referred to the shady side of the slope, while “yang” referred to the bright sunny side. As time went on, the yin-

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND WITH QUALITY WORKMANSHIP

W

ith the solar industry booming, experts will tell you that one of the keys to upgrading your house with a clean, green solar system is to make sure you get quality installation. Andrew Yani, Bonterra Solar’s founder and principal, wholeheartedly agrees. “To install a great solar system, you’ve got to have a great team on the ground, or rather, on the roof!” Yani said.

BONTERRA SOLAR contact // 548-7657(SOLR) address // 4218 Waialae Ave. #A203 web // www.bonterrasolar.com

Trained, experienced installers Bonterra Solar is one of the fastest-growing solar companies in Hawaii. Every day it sends out highly trained teams, able to handle everything from a basic water-heater system setup to sophisticated solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, that can meet all of a home’s electricity needs. The installation crews form an ohana, said Bonterra partner and general contractor Kohl

Christensen. “These guys work together like a family. They watch out for each other because safety is essential when working on a roof,” he noted. A Punahou graduate and big wave surfer, 34-year-old

Christensen join-ed Bonterra after in-stalling his own photovoltaic system on his North Shore organic farm. “Surfing brings you close to nature and solar energy borrows from nature to power our lives,” he said.

Safety Steve Valentin, 26, is operations manager. He does everything from design to permitting to overseeing installation. He’s also an ocean lifeguard so it’s no surprise that he’s Bonterra’s safety officer.

“We take safety very seriously,” Valentin said. “Any time we are working more than 6 feet high — which is just about all the time — we work with full protective gear including harnesses and lanyards.”

Quality workmanship

Forty-three-year-old installer Richard Martocci has done more than 400 solar installations in a single year! He says install teams’ quality workmanship shines through both on the roof and off. “We live a few miles from each other, we surf the same spots,” Martocci said. “We work hard and then get together in our free time for family barbecues.” “It’s that kind of family spirit that makes Bonterra Solar special,” said Andrew Yani. “I think our customers realize solar installation, for us, is more than just a job.” Bonterra Solar is located at 4218 Waialae Ave. #A203 in Honolulu. A BRIGHT SOLUTION FOR YOUR POWER OUTAGE NIGHTMARES ith hurricane season upon us again, being prepared and informed will help you better deal with disaster, should one strike. Hurricane season officially starts at the beginning of June and lasts until the end of November. Oftentimes during a disaster, major utilities such as water and electricity are lost. Taking precautions now instead of waiting until a disaster strikes will help ensure you can “weather the storm” safely. Some of the most basic preparations can consist of getting all of your flashlights loaded with new batteries, getting an all-weather radio that runs on both AC power and batteries and having a first aid kit as well as plenty of canned food and bottled water. A more extreme measure that some homeowners

W

ALL G ELECTRIC contact // 531-2554 web // info@allgelectric.com

• www.allgelectric.com have considered is purchasing a portable generator, which can provide you with electricity temporarily during a power outage. However, it is important to know how to properly power up to your generator to not cause harm to yourself and others. In order to do this properly, you will need to hire a licensed electrician to install a manual electrical transfer switch and backfeed outlet. This is a device that switches the power source from one power supply to another. The transfer is typically from a primary power supply, such as the

local utility company (HECO), to a secondary power supply, such as an emergency generator. The electrical transfer switch also transfers power back to the primary power supply (HECO) when emergency power is no longer needed. The transfer switch keeps the two power sources isolated, allowing for a safe transfer from one source to another. A back-feed outlet is a special receptacle/plug installed near your main circuit breaker panel that is made especially for the generator. This allows your generator to power up your home through the electrical panel, which in turn provides limited electricity throughout it. The size of your generator will determine how much power your home will receive. This results in a much

more convenient way to provide power throughout your home and minimize the need to run extension cords from each appliance to the generator. Keep in mind that depending on the size of your generator and its output, you will only be able to power up essential items such as the refrigerator and some interior lights. Consult with a licensed electrician to install generator connections and transfer switches in advance because when the storm hits, it’ll be too late! All G Electric has experienced and knowledgeable electricians capable of installing these components so that your home is properly equipped during the next power outage. Power packages also are available and include installation and a portable gener-

ator, a more complete solution for homeowners who don’t already have their own generator. With a long track record for superior service and professionalism, the company also will thoroughly train you in the process involved of safely switching from the primary power supply (HECO) to the secondary power source (generator). All G Electric is a locally owned

and operated, full-service electrical contractor. It is able to handle all electrical areas from troubleshooting to a full rewire of your home and everything in between. The company has enlisted the expertise of Murakami’s Roofing and expanded to include photovoltaic installation and maintenance, making it an electrical powerhouse.

Creating a home office that works for you BY KAREN NAKAMURA

anet is pulling on her jacket and grabbing her briefcase and keys in a mad rush for the front door. Jim is letting the dog out, pouring a cup of coffee and heading down a back hallway of his house. Which one is going to work? They both are! Home offices are becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity with more people telecommuting or running their own businesses from their house. Millions of Americans work from home, and with the rising cost of gas and increased traffic, which causes longer

J

commutes, that number is likely to grow even more every year. A work space is no longer relegated just to the kitchen table or a corner of the guest bedroom; it has been promoted to a room of its own in the home. A consumer survey by the National Association of Home Builders found that a home office was the third most desired specialty room, following the laundry and dining rooms, respectively. If you are looking to create a home office, or revamp an existing one, keep the following points in mind:

Separate your space Although you are physically working in the house, it is important to set up your home office so that the lines between your home life and your work life do not get blurred. By creating a barrier, you will be less tempted to take a television break in the middle of your work day or work on spreadsheets when you are supposed to be “home from the office.”

in “a place for everything and everything in its place,” be sure to allot enough space for adequate storage and file cabinets. If you work on several different projects, set up separate, smaller work stations dedicated to each task.

Design your office to match your work style

Show off your style

When choosing the furniture and layout of your office, make sure it fits the way you choose to work. For example, if you believe

There is no such thing as “one design fits all.” While one person may prefer the look of dark woods and rich colors, someone else

may favor a more whimsical look with bright colors and clean lines. This is your chance to bring in designs and items that best reflect your personality and interests. Don’t be restricted by what you think a home office should look like. Make it your own, since you will be the one spending the most time there.

Make it comfortable When choosing the furniture and amenities for your

office, make sure that you are physically comfortable and that your work space is conducive to productivity. Your chair should be adjustable with adequate seat cushioning. Add a couch or armchair to the room to allow for additional seating for guests, or to provide a place to read away from your desk. Install recessed lighting, which is less harsh, and buy smaller desktop lights to focus on task areas that are used for reading and writing to reduce eye strain. Each human being has “four bodies” — physical, emotional, mental and spiritual — that can be divided into yang (physical and mental) and yin (emotional and spiritual). Females are more naturally aligned with the emotional and spiritual bodies, while men are more naturally aligned with the physical and mental bodies. When men apply stronger yang techniques in the home, the yin energy (the women) becomes more centered and balanced. In other words, use your body and brains to appeal to her emotional-spiritual nature. Try it and see!

I

f you have been holding off on kitchen renovations because you’re missing some accessories or have scratches on the cabinet doors, wait no longer. C&C Cabinets Granite Inc. incorporates functionality, beauty and cost efficiency to supply high-quality, discounted kitchen cabinets. The company’s store offers a complete range of kitchen cabinets and vanity kitchen cabinets as well as sinks and countertops. Kitchen and vanity cabinets play an important role in home improvements. They are some of the finishing touches for a home, so you should select kitchen cabinets with extreme care. Choosing kitchen cabinets is the greatest single design element in your kitchen, as well as the biggest expense. To add more beauty to the kitchen, quality kitchen cabinets can be installed. C&C Cabinets Granite Inc. stocks seven types of cabinet finishes with a selection

of door styles. All cabinets are made of solidwood face frames with plywood boxes, and no particle board, press wood or laminate. Two new finish colors have just arrived with new designs. Because the company has all its merchandise in stock, you can save up to 50 percent in comparison to other custom kitchens. With recent advances in technology, stock cabinetry has become a much more desirable candidate for home improvements. With Independence Day coming up, C&C is offering a special Independence Sale from July 2 to 7 only (while supplies last). A special discount is available if you bring C&C Cabinets Granite’s ad from Hawaii Renovation. Bring the kitchen layout and come down to talk to a salesperson, who will give you an estimate. KEEPING IT ‘OLD SCHOOL’ WITH SAND-AND-FINISH WOOD FLOORING BY KYLE GALDEIRA hile pre-finished hardwood flooring has grown in popularity, Hawaii Hardwood Flooring is one of the few local flooring businesses also offering sandand-finish and unfinished materials. The wide variety of flooring choices coupled with its corresponding installation procedures and distinct appearances provide customers with a wealth of choices throughout each project. Hawaii Hardwood Flooring brings more than 30 years of experience to every flooring project it takes on, and president Chris Brenna makes it a priority to offer customers a multitude of residential and commercial flooring options. The company has operated out of its central Kalihi location for four years now and features

W

three installation teams and three sanding-and-finishing teams that take the worry, stress and mess out of the installation process. Brenna suggests customers consider the sand-and-finish flooring, as it is known for hiding seams and rendering perfectly uniformed sheen and flatness. “I call it ‘old school,’ some things they just can’t duplicate in a factory,” Brenna said of the sand-and-finish process. “A lot of people think that this process is extremely dusty, but the sanding industry has come up with dustless sanding technology, which means we put vacuums on every tool and erect plastic bearers (zip walls) to keep the dust to a fine minimum. We offer extra services the client can purchase, like putting floor protectors on all their furniture to help keep the

floor looking new for years, cleaning services and moving services to make your experience stress-free.” According to Brenna, another popular option is engineered flooring — a system featuring a stabilized core and sliced hardwood that is laminated to ensure stability and to allow for the use of several installation techniques. A floating floor system is per-

fect for a family living in the house during the installation process. As Brenna describes the process, “You place a moisture-resistant padding down and then only glue the seams of the hardwood together. This system is the easiest and fastest.” With Hawaii’s moist air and humid climate, wood tends to expand and contract depending on the variable conditions. The nail-down installation tech-

nique, according to Brenna, “is when we use a special flat nail to countersink it into the tongue side of the flooring, causing a blind nail effect every six to eight inches. This system is perfect for plywood substrates, and allows the floor to freely expand and contract.” As a special mahalo to its loyal Hawaii Renovation readers, Hawaii Hardwood Flooring is offering $500 off any flooring installation package larger than 500 square feet. For more information, call 842-7755. To speak with Brenna directly about the best flooring option to meet specific needs, call 306-3374.

A renovation project can include updating your space with new paint and fixtures, adding rooms or another floor to accommodate a growing family and creating an environment

for multigenerational living. With a home equity line of credit from HCFCU, such projects can be funded in as little as two weeks, enabling you to get your renovations started promptly. A LIFETIME OF PROTECTION FOR YOUR ROOF SURFACE SHIELD

o you own a home covered by a flat or low-slope roof? Do you have an old Monier tile roof or metal roof? In this day and age, there are alternatives to a complete tear off and installation of a new roof. But what are they? How do you know if your roof is a candidate? A roof coating can be applied to just about any substrate. Surface Shield Roofing Company does, however, have criteria regarding an acceptable condition of the existing substrate before a coating system is recommended. The first requisite is that your existing roofing material must be in decent condition and the roof still must be attached to the wood or concrete that it was originally adhered or attached to. Minor blistering or lifting of the material can be repaired and cracked tiles replaced, but there is

D

a point of “no return.” This point comes when the roofing surface has too many blisters, seams coming apart in more areas than not, a membrane worn down to a paperthin state or brittle tile not able to be walked on. These would all qualify as signs to the home or business owner that a complete removal and installation of new roofing material may be necessary. The installation of a coating system is a less expensive way to enhance the integrity of the substrate (roofing surface) on your flat or low-pitch roof. This type of roofing can range from roughly $3 to $5 per foot and hold material warranties ranging from five years to the lifetime of the structure. If your home is not a candidate for coating or steeper roofing surfaces, asphalt products are a great option. They also are cost effective

A PROFESSIONAL PAINT JOB FROM START TO FINISH him to the Islands. The contractor spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business and cultivating a sterling reputation for producing quality results. Whether the job involves painting a home’s exterior or a few walls of a commercial space, Deep Purple can cover it. “I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my main goal is to produce a quality job — that’s the most important thing,” Suh said. At the onset of each job, Suh confers with the owner to determine the necessary steps involved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter considers many factors, including the relationships between colors and how they complement one another, and presents the owner with the viable options. Other aspects that Suh considers include the texture of certain surfaces and what variety of paint will coat them in a way

BY KYLE GALDEIRA immy Suh believes strongly that a stellar paint job must be preceded by proper preparation. The owner of Deep Purple Painting has been honing his craft for more than 25 years, and can quickly diagnose problems with paint jobs that have resulted in unsightly chipping and peeling. “A painter needs to follow the proper procedures,” Suh said. “That’s why there are so many problems here in Hawaii with painting projects. You need to sand and prime the area, and prepare it properly. It’s worth the price for a premium paint job that’s done right the first time, saving time and money in the long run.” Suh moved to Hawaii in early 2010 to be closer to family and friends, and he brought his successful painting business with

D’SPLUMBING BEFORE

A COMPANY THAT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE

Family

BY KYLE GALDEIRA rank Duarte makes it a priority to provide his customers with the personal attention they need to feel comfortable throughout a construction project. “Many customers will tell me, ‘Working with you and your staff makes us feel like family,’” Duarte said. “What better way to end a project.” And, with his son Aaron by his side, Duarte is perpetuating the family business as he teaches the ins and outs of assisting families with their building and remodeling needs. “Working in my dad’s

F

20 | HAWAII RENOVATION | JULY 1, 2012

plumbing business wasn’t easy,” said Frank, who started learning the plumbing trade in 1961 and was certified as a master plumber in 1968. “He was a hard worker who only went to the eighth grade because, being the oldest boy, he needed to work to help support the family. I owe everything to my dad. Now it’s my turn to train my son, Aaron, who I’m very happy to say has taken a huge step in becoming the third generation of plumbers in the Duarte family.” As the owner of D’s Plumbing and Ohana Home Additions and Remodeling, Frank has honed his craft as an

integral cog in the family business. After learning the ropes with his father at the helm, Duarte — the oldest of three boys in his family — started D’s Plumbing more than 31 years ago, and is still going strong today as a general contractor. Meanwhile, Aaron is continuing to learn from his father, something he’s done ever since tagging along with Dad as a kid. “Ever since I was young, I worked with him. I kind of grew up with it,” said Aaron, a member of the D’s Plumbing team for the past 11 years. “Of course, he wants me to take over the business one day. I take pride in what we do. We’re a small busi-

ness, and he expects a lot of me, so we do everything we can to please him and the customers.” Customer satisfaction is the top priority at D’s Plumbing. The 73-year-old Frank recounts stories of contractors who fail to deliver, whether it be botching a job because of lack of experience or certification, or simply taking payment and not living up to the contract. “As a small company, we offer personal service like no other,” Frank said. “My men are skilled in so many trades, and it gives me great pleasure to watch them showcase their skills. More and more, clients will call me and tell me how polite they are throughout the job. You can’t imagine how that makes me feel.” D’s Plumbing is well-versed at replacing aged materials with modern alternatives, including swapping out old, dark wood to enhance lighting and replacing galvanized piping with copper. Other techniques, including

modernizing bathrooms by expanding shower areas to accommodate the disabled, or adding housings in a kitchen to free up more space by getting a microwave off the counter are just a few in D’s arsenal. Frank recounts a recent job during which a woman was looking to expand a shower in order to accommodate her elderly father. D’s worked with the customer and decided on a design that involved converting part of an adjacent closet into space that could then be used to extend the shower. Stability bars and an easily accessible entryway to the shower were also incorporated — and all this was done within the allotted budget. “We may be a small company, but with the skills that we possess, we are great in numbers,” Frank said.
