THAT

A ROOM

AFTER

RECAPTURES THE FAMILY

ick and Megan’s family room was missing just one thing: the family. Their two young children were taking over this grand space with a mishmash of toys, books and games. This left little room for Dick and Megan and Megan’s parents, who live on the third floor of this beautiful old home. Dick and Megan wanted a multigenerational family room that would promote some “together time.” They also wanted to organize the books and toys, and make the room more appealing to adults. This space had some wonderful features, including beautiful leaded windows overlooking the garden, a fireplace and classic hardwood

D

floors. But peeling paint on the radiators, an understated mantelpiece and unsuitable furniture groupings were detracting from the room’s true potential. The main point of interest was the fireplace, so I decided to give it a radical facelift with a gorgeous new fireplace surround and over-mantel made from cast stone. This manmade product looks like real stone but actually is cast in rubber moulds and then cemented into place with mortar. Although this elegant look

does not come cheaply, I justified the cost by reworking and repairing the room’s existing cabinetry and shelves and re-

using some of the furniture. The existing cabinetry surrounding the fireplace did balance things, but it was in sad

shape. Years of storing the kids’ toys was taking a toll in the form of chipped doors and SEE PAGE 9

COVERSTORY

by SarahPacheco here’s a new kid on the cabinet-and-granite supplier block, and its name is Da Wing Trading LLC. A family-owned-and– operated venture, Da Wing Trading opened its doors last year at 2006 Republican St., offering solid wood cabinets with plywood boxes (no MDF, particle board or pressed wood) and granite countertops out of its 8,000 square feet of warehouse and showroom space. “We own the property where we store in-stock cabinets and granite, thus we don’t have to pay rent, which enables us to pass the savings on to our customers,” said Harry Kwan, manager. “We sell (our products) at affordable prices, which are the people’s prices,” added Kwan’s uncle Tommy Chan, who works in the

DAWING TRADING LLC CONTACT: 847-3288 • www.dawingtrading.com sales department. Kwan goes on to note that the family decided to invest in the 10,000-square-foot property rather than renting it out because they saw it as a good long-term investment for future generations. Additionally, the property has ample on-site parking, a scarcity in the industrial Kalihi area. “That’s something very important to have,” Chan stated. Though Da Wing Trading only deals in cabinets and countertops at the moment, Kwan explains that they carry those made of quality

materials. For example, countertops are made from granite imported from China, while cabinets are made using alder and maple woods. “These are solid woods, the good woods,” said Chan of the cabinets, which come standard with softclose hardware and are available in four different color variations, including light cherry, maple, white (maple) and dark cherry (alder only). “Cabinets and countertops go hand-in-hand,” Kwan said. “We chose to focus on granite for countertops because it is a unique, sturdy, natural rock, and a high-quality addition that can enhance the look and feel of a kitchen or bathroom.” And for home-improvers looking for a little advice on their next kitchen or bath renovation, Da Wing Trading’s staff of profession-

als — which, in addition to Kwan and Chan, includes Kwan’s father, Yue Fung Kwan and cousin, Josh Guan — is ready to help. Just bring a rough draft or sketch of what you want and the measurements of the space, and Kwan says they can come up with a free design and quote for what you’ll need. “We are hands-on in helping our customers,” Kwan said. “We help the customers design their kitchen and bathrooms and work with their budget and needs. “Customer service is our main concern, and since we own the property, we will be here for a long time to service our customers.” Da Wing Trading operates Monday through Saturday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, call 847-3288 or visit www.dawingtrading.com.

their family on the beach at Kahala. The direction of the sun and trade winds, captured with passive environmental systems designed to harness natural elements, were the major driving forces in building a very comfortable home. The 35,564square-foot site consists of a 2,329-square-foot cottage and garage and the 7,860square-foot main house. The main house has nearly 1,700 square feet of covered lanai, and the exterior materials include Hardie board siding and trim to protect the home from salt, sun and rain.

“Hale Nunu” by Welch and Weeks LLC — the 2012 BIA Renaissance Overall Grand Award winner in the New Residential Division Deep roof overhangs keep the house cool, while modern insulation and radiant barriers, along with the wood shingles and copper gutters, also work well in this tropical climate. A vaulted 15-foot-high ceil-

ing in the great room, pocket doors opening to ocean views, custom built cabinets, natural stone counters and Milgard fiberglass double-glazed windows are a few of the features in this modern

legacy home that reflects the past and welcomes the future.

It also has one of the highest rates of electricity in the country, making solar electricity an important option for homeowners looking for a more affordable alternative to their rising utility rates. GIVING YOUR HOME A NEW LOOK WITH INVESTMENT VALUE our home is probably the biggest financial asset that you own. Unlike a car, computer or big screen, it is an asset that will appreciate instead of go down in value each year. So, it makes financial sense to invest in it, and protect that investment. Did you know that Anlin energy-efficient doors and windows give a 120-percent return on your initial investment? And, like your home, that investment will appreciate year after year. Windows Hawaii guarantees the installation of Anlin doors, windows and siding for your home for the life of your home — a warranty that is transferable if you sell it. But that isn’t the best part. How about an investment that grows in value over time as well as:

Anlin windows have Neat glass, which repels dirt and does not water spot. problems in Hawaii: mold. Just like in your shower, your shingles may discolor and darken over time. Aside from being unsightly, mold, algae or fungus growth (under your eave line) is a

sign that your roof may be flooded with moisture from rain or stopped-up gutters.

What will help? Washing the roof down with a zinc treatment is a temporary fix at best, and may not address the real problem. Applying a protective roof coating may help with the mold issues while cooling your roof, but again, may only be a temporary solution and mask the problem. Depending on the condition of the roof, you may have to reroof or otherwise repair it. Murakami’s Roofing will recommend the best course of action for your budget and provide a written estimate. If you have questions, feel free to call the company. Murakami’s goal is to answer all of your questions until you are satisfied and confident in your decision.

Really appreciate your responsiveness, the quality, the price, and above all, your follow through to make sure things were taken care of. Aloha, Randy

RECAPTURING THE FAMILY ROOM FROM PAGE 2

broken hinges. So we repaired the doors and added a decorative mesh screen inset to the central section of shelving. The screen conceals some of the contents while adding a touch of elegance. The old white shelves were replaced with new wooden shelves painted in a rich chocolate brown. The same color was painted on the walls behind the shelves to add depth and interest. The radiators drew the eye with their chipped and peeling paint. To disguise them and blend them into the room’s architecture, we designed custom radiator covers and painted them a fresh ivory color. Dick and Megan had already installed recess-

BEFORE

ed halogen lights in the ceiling, so I decided to add some variety. We installed two sconces on either side of the fireplace and an elegant chandelier over a game table in front of one of the windows. This area is the perfect place for the

adults to read the paper, play chess or share a chat and a cup of tea. Since the family room’s windows overlooked the garden, privacy was not an issue. The view was gorgeous, so instead of covering up those spectacular leaded

windows, I designed flowing two-tone sheers to frame the glass and bring some of the great outdoors inside. In fact, all that greenery outside the room inspired my palette of moss green, bark brown and mustard. These colors are worked into the room’s furnishings and accessories and are set off by the soft vanilla cream on the walls. To finish off this spectacular space, I brought in a couple of comfy leather chairs and snuggled them up to the fireplace. A new sectional sofa, an armoire that holds lots of toys and an elegant table and chairs for the adults completed the look, and pulled everything together. Now Dick and Megan can take pleasure in the family room they were looking for. Interior decorator Candice Olson is host of Home & Garden Television’s “Divine Design. MAY SPECIAL

TRY ‘TECHORATING’ FOR FUNCTIONAL, STYLISH RESULTS ome interior design trends are hard to understand. That jagged piece of cement that is supposedly a chair or headache-inducing paint color may look great in the glossy pages of a design magazine, but would average people really want it in their own living room? Fortunately, there is a growing trend in interior design that is easy to understand, relatable and applicable in almost every home — this trend is called “techorating.” “‘Techorating’ is the blending of technology into the overall design of a room to

S

create functional, stylish and unique environments that work well and look great,” said Janna Robinson, technology and design expert. “This design trend grows from the integral role technology now plays in our lives.” Robinson offers some helpful tips for incorporating the techorating trend into your home:

Techorating with TV “Televisions can now serve many functions in our homes, from making a design

crisp and accurate, even for off-angle viewing.

statement with a sleek flat screen to providing a focal point for gatherings of family and friends, to even serving as a hub of information, thanks to Smart TV platforms and increased connectivity,” Robinson said. “Techorating principles take into account the central role a TV plays in the living room, family room or bedroom.” Start by considering the aesthetics of the TV itself. Flat screens are popular not only for the superior viewing experience they provide, but also for their visual appeal. Manufacturers have taken TV aesthetics to the next level, offering ultra-slim models. LG has gone even further with its Cinema Screen design, which is a nearly frameless TV that provides a streamlined look. Next, because more Americans are entertaining at home, it is important to maximize the viewing experience for the maximum number of viewers. For some TVs, viewing angle can be an issue. Robinson recommended arranging seating so that everyone has a good view of the screen, while still allowing traffic to flow freely around seats. Sectionals and modular sectionals provide flexible seating configurations. For smaller spaces, bean bags, decorative poufs and floor pillows can provide extra seating without overpowering the space. Look for TVs that are designed to maximize viewing angles. Next-generation 3D TVs like the Cinema 3D models from LG provide a wide range of viewing angles in 2D and 3D so content display remains

Creating the perfect background

Techorating techniques use color and design to create a comfortable, functional background for technology. For example, painting the wall behind your TV a darker color (like chocolate brown) not only helps with distracting glares, but also gives the illusion of depth to the space. Similarly, dressing up bare walls, floors and wooden furniture with varying texture and fabrics such as area rugs and curtains can help absorb sound and improve the listening quality in a room. Don’t overdo it, though; too much carpeting and heavy curtains can make sound seem muffled. Instead, add some bookshelves or even hung art to create reflective surfaces that will help break up sound waves. A mixture of surfaces and materials will provide the best sound quality. Keep in mind, Robinson said, that you don’t have to completely redecorate your room to achieve techorating harmony. “I’m a big fan of repurposing and melding old with new,” she says. “If your couch has a solid frame, update it by reupholstering it, or try a new decorative pillow cover. If you have existing furniture that needs a little sprucing up, paint or stain it for a fresh new look.”

TRUST THE ‘GARAGE EXPERTS’ FOR CONCRETE FLOORING TOPCOATS f you have a dull and hard-to-clean concrete surface in your garage or workspace, Lokahi’s Garage Experts Flooring will transform your dull and dreary concrete floor into a stunning, seamless masterpiece that will outshine other comparable systems for years. When incorporating the extreme gloss polyurea topcoat into

your finish, rest assured that you are getting the absolute best-looking clear topcoat available in the country. Our polyurea topcoat has an incredible gloss while providing extreme chemical and abrasion resistance, which is why it will continue to shine when others start to fade. In 1999, Garage Experts Flooring revolutionized

the garage floor coating industry by introducing a two-step flake system when all other systems were four or more steps. This was accomplished by creating a proprietary epoxy that “wicks” deep into the concrete, creating a bond that is three times stronger than ordinary epoxy or poliaspartic systems over concrete. In fact,

this revolutionary system will withstand at least 8 pounds of MVE (Moisture Vapor Emission) pressure, while others fail at 3 pounds. Additionally, all our clear topcoats will not yellow from sun exposure, and most are under 10 VOC (volatile organic compounds), making it safer for the planet’s

ozone. And when we say our clear topcoats are “hottire resistant,” we mean it. They will not yellow, darken, stain or lift from hot tires. You can expect to easily wipe up any tire marks for years to come. When other products say they are “hot-tire resistant,” they mean it won’t peel. With Garage Experts Flooring, it’s as if your car

was never parked in the garage! New advances in our technology allow Garage Experts Flooring to be installed in one day. In 2009, we introduced an additive that reduces the long drying time to only three hours. Now you can get the same one-day install results of a poluasSEE PAGE 14

Deco Painting uses a special technique that eliminates cutting in and therefore eliminates those ugly brush lines around doors, windows and trim. EASY TIPS TO CREATE A RELAXING EXPERIENCE AT HOME n our fast-paced and chaotic lives, we’re always seeking ways to relax and de-stress from the day. For some, that means watching a favorite TV show, having a nice glass of wine, or even a massage at the spa, but we often forget about our homes and the impact of its design on relaxation. Kelly Edwards, designer and lifestyle expert, and Waterpik suggest the following tips for creating relaxation-inspired home decor:

I

Kitchen The kitchen is often called the heart of the home, so it’s wise to invest in kitchen materials that are better for you and your family. Caesarstone and Silestone countertops are hypoallergenic, non-porous, resistant to stains, ultra strong and always look elegant and amazing. Consider using streamlined high-gloss laminate fronts on cabinets for a sleek and clean look, and use pull-out drawers behind each cabinet for more storage space. Remember, being organized can make anyone feel less stressed.

Bathroom The bathroom is a place visited at the start and end of your day. By simply changing your shower head, you can turn a regular shower into a truly relaxing, spa-like experience. The stylish Waterpik EasySelect shower head, for example, has a spray selector located right on the handle, so you can change the spray settings from circular massage to full-body coverage without having to reach through the water stream. Use monochromatic colors to sooth you from the

moment you walk in and opt for striking marble or glass tiles. By installing a glass shower enclosure, you’ll be able to show off the gorgeous tiles, update the look of your bathroom and make the room look larger.

Living room

A natural material like grass cloth wallpaper is a great way to add color and texture to your walls in your living room. It has a very relaxed and sophisticated appeal to it. Paint the walls a color that conveys the feeling of relaxation like light shades of cream, white, green or greige (a combination of gray and beige). Mix in a few natural elements like wood chairs and tables, cozy blankets and fresh flowers, and you’ll have a place that will feel comfortable to come home to every day.

Bedroom

Pick colors that are easy on the eye, like the blues and green, to evoke a sense of “rest.” Change harsh overhead lighting for architecturally interesting lighting elements such as library sconces; place one on each side of the bed for the perfect reading lights. Trade out your old worn-out shades for some natural wood blinds or bamboo shades and follow the look up by adding soft curtains to block out the light for a restful night’s sleep. For any space, a non-cluttered area will help you achieve a relaxed state of mind at home. Keep in mind that being comfortable doesn’t mean being trendy; simply create your own style and do what makes you feel your best.

Have you ever wondered if the price you were quoted to tent your home was too good to be true? With Sandwich Isle you don’t have to guess! Let us prove to you that your fumigation was a success.

Are you sure you are getting what you are paying for? RDA

Ask about the option to use a RDA Fumiscope the newest remote fumigant monitoring technology that monitors the entire duration of the fumigation & provides a report.

understand who the company works with and if they have a solid track record. Also, some companies may say that the quality of the panels does not matter; this is wrong. Panels must work at the highest efficiency to capture the most power, so lesser-grade panels will produce at a lower level, thereby increasing what you owe each month. In other words, poor per-

formance in solar panels will mean a higher cost to the homeowner to compensate for the panels’ inability to generate adequate power. “We’ve heard stories about homeowners not knowing what type of panels they receive, Carlson said. “At RevoluSun, we walk our customers through all the options and help them select the best choice, based on quality, to achieve their sav-

ings goal. Leasing is an excellent option for homeowners who always wanted to “go solar. It’s the best of both worlds — cut down your monthly electric bills while having a trusted partner to maintain your system. Turning tax returns into ‘relax returns’ T ax season has come and gone, and many fortunate people have gotten, or will be getting, a bit of coin back from the treasury. A lot of people may even splurge a little bit for themselves and for their families. Hawaii Home Expo turns this into an easy decision. From now until the end of June, the best possible gift for any family will be marked down 25 percent from Hawaii retail prices. What could be more appreciated than a Jacuzzi? It’s not very often that a brand name becomes

synonymous with a type of product. For tissue paper, there’s Kleenex. For copy machines, there’s Xerox. When it comes to hot tubs, there’s Jacuzzi. Jacuzzi is the name that defines the hot-tub experience and is the company that was the catalyst for the modern hot-tub industry. Innovation has always been at the core of Jacuzzi products, from water jet technology to LED lighting and audio systems. For 2012, all Jacuzzi spas now include the Clear Ray Water Purification

attached to the plumbing in your hot tub that exposes water to optimum UV-C light rays.

The UV-C ray technology has been used for years as a reliable water disinfectant, and treats 99.9 percent of waterborne bacteria and viruses. The ultraviolet light actually alters the DNA of the bacteria, rendering it unable to reproduce. This creates a safe, clean atmosphere for your hot tub or pool, and means a reduction of up to 50 percent of sanitizing chemicals — guaranteeing you’ll feel fresher than ever! Hawaii Home Expo has been the exclusive Jacuzzi dealer for the

Hawaiian Islands for more than 25 years. A lot of places can get hot tubs, but only Hawaii Home Expo can get a Jacuzzi! In addition to the great, limited-time offer, Hawaii Home Expo is proud to offer financing with the first two years interest free. Relaxation has never been easier. To claim any “relax returns,” call 695-3976 (EXPO) or visit the Jacuzzi Spa showroom at Hawaii Home Expo, located at 2933 Koapaka St. in Honolulu.

HAWAIIRENOVATION many challenges, it doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the space. From a full-scale home renovation to some simple and quick fixes, there are many options to help you realize your kitchen’s full potential and transform it into a welcoming place where you’ll want to spend time.

Size up your space

Small-space solutions for the kitchen C rowded cabinets, cluttered counters and nonexistent prep space. Sound familiar? For many homeown-

ers, small kitchen spaces make everyday use and entertaining a source of frustration. While a small kitchen can pose

Before starting any project, big or small, evaluate the space and determine how you want it to work for you. Sometimes solutions for one issue can provide an answer for other challenges. For example, by adding a moveable island to create additional prep space, you’ve now also got an area for friends and family to gather when you entertain. Don’t forget to consider long-term goals for your home. Is this a starter home or somewhere you plan to stay and grow in? This can make a difference in the

type of projects you want to take on.

Make a plan When you’ve decided on the scope of your project, it’s time to determine what resources you’ll need to make it happen. Online tools like Merillat’s Step-By-Step Kitchen Planner can help you get an idea of what elements you’re looking for and how they’ll work in your space. Talking with a design professional can help you decide if you need additional support or if your project can be completed on your own. “When faced with a small space, it can be hard to see the design possibilities,” said Sarah Reep, director of designer relations and education for Merillat Cabinets. “A professional designer can bring clarity and simplicity to any type of home change. In many cases, their skills and training can help reveal solutions you never even knew existed.”

Get organized If you’re remodeling, look for cabinets to help contain clutter and keep countertops clear. Storage solutions such as pull-out spice racks, indrawer cutting boards, drawer organizers and dividers keep all your cooking utensils out of the way but close at hand, and can make life in the kitchen easier for everyday use and entertaining. “In the kitchen, especially a small one, every inch counts,” said Reep. “Planning smart storage solutions in your cabinetry is a great way to bring style and functionality to even the smallest spaces.” If a few quick fixes are all you can take on, have some fun with it by researching solutions in magazines, on design blogs or even through new resources like Pinterest. Additionally, look for creative ways to make the most of your cabinets and drawers by

placing items close to where they’ll be used.

Change the focus

Whether it’s an area to display your wine collection with a built-in storage option like those offered by Merillat Cabinets or showing off decorative dishes and family treasures with glass-front cabinetry, drawing attention to items that show your interests and personality will remove the focus from the actual size of your space.

For more design tips and product solutions for kitchens of any size, visit merillat.com.

W ‘BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL’ DEFINE THIS SEASON’S OUTDOOR DECOR TRENDS

hen the weather is warm, Mother Nature becomes a shameless show-off. From clear, bright skies to lush green grass and vibrant blooms, the outdoors go bold and beautiful. So is it any surprise that this season’s outdoor decor is following suit? Bold is the watchword for beautiful outdoor decorating this year, and it’s easy to find items — from furniture to wallpaper — that play to this theme. “Bright colors, bold patterns and showpiece accessories are top trends in outdoor decor this year,” says Dani Nichols, a design-trends watcher for wallpaper purveyor Murals Your Way. “Whether your personal style is modern and chic or country and homey, you can find design elements that both fit your style and follow this trend.” If you’re looking to add pizzazz to your outdoor decor this year, here are some ideas for bringing the bold and beautiful trend to your patio, deck or backyard:

Fire and water

Celebrating the elements is a recurring theme in decor, both indoor and outdoor. Where better to fete two of the most powerful ones — fire and water — than in your outdoor design? Color is an easy-tochange, low-cost way to incorporate the appeal of these elements into decor. Adding a fire pit or a water feature such as a fountain, however, can be even more satisfying. Whether you opt for a large, copper fire pit on tall legs or a simple clay chiminea, incorporating fire into your outdoor living spaces boldly creates warmth, drama and ambiance. A water feature, whether a wall-mounted waterfall or a free-standing fountain, also is a powerful SEE PAGE 19

statement — one that can generate calm or mirth, depending on the style, setting and circumstances. Home improvement stores now carry a variety of fire pits, chimineas and water fountains to enhance outdoor environments.

Wall power In recent years, murals and wallpaper have been gaining popularity for outdoor spaces. Technology like Luxuriant Fabric-Backed Vinyl by Murals Your Way, makes it easy to decorate outdoors. The durable material goes on virtually any flat surface and can handle the elements when a layer or two of polyurethane is added on top of the outdoor mural. This season’s wallpapers feature bright, saturated colors and eye-popping patterns. Whether you’re looking for an intensely hued geometric pattern or a striking nature scene, you can find wallpaper options that mesh well with the bold design trend.

Color and customization Color sets the mood, and can act as a foundation or accent in virtually any design scheme. This year, bold hues are popping up in nearly every element of outdoor decor, from vivid metallics and exotic reds, to lush blues and boisterous yellows. Orange is particularly hot this season, with everyone from paint makers to furniture designers incorporating every shade of orange imaginable — from tangerine to pumpkin — in their designs. Color customization is another exciting aspect of the boldness trend. Homeowners wanting a profoundly personal outdoor environment can customize the interplay of color in their decor. Online, it’s easy to find companies that will create fabrics and upholstery

This season, if you’re seeking a look that’s both ontrend and timeless, emulate Mother Nature and go bold. Your outdoor living space will be a celebration of nature, and the perfect stage for all your outdoor celebrations.

Older everyday appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators also could be consuming more electricity than they should. Newer, upto-date models could save you 20 to 40 percent on energy costs, and might be eligible for a Hawaii Energy rebate.
