edibles and often made meals based on what I was growing. Now, I am ashamed to say my lanai garden is too scary to eat. There are little white flies on the kale, the mint is brown, the basil is yellow and the rosemary is covered in what looks like fur. I’ve decided to start over this weekend. I’ll clean out the containers and refresh the soil, but this time I’m determined to get it right. I already have drainage holes punched into the bottoms of my containers, but there are a few more things I’ll need to consider:

ave you ever tried doing something that you knew you did really well in the past, only to find out you are no longer good at it? That’s what I’ve been dealing with lately. I was once the queen of container gardening. I specialized in

Connecting with nature “With the spring and the feelings of renewal it brings, we at Geobunga suggest considering gifts for your garden or any green space which gives back to you throughout the seasons,” said Andrew Dedrick, Geobunga executive director. “People have this primal need to connect to nature, that’s why you see parks in urban areas and home gardens. Caring for plants, or growing your own herbs is very satisfying in so many ways, and very simple when you know how. We at Geobunga can educate you and give you the tools to create a natural environment you can enjoy for years to come.” Health benefits Spending time connecting with nature brings a myriad of benefits, added Kasey Baldonado, Geobunga executive manager. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention labels gardening “moderate cardiovascular exercise.” In fact, 45 minutes of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aero-

Fifteen minutes of watering in the morning and 15 minutes of weeding in the evening provides a way to de-stress, avoids the hottest part of the day and gets you moving. “Cultivating a container garden, planting an herb bed, pruning flowers, creating a water garden or designing a Japanese rock garden can provide a sense of tranquility, peace and accomplishment,” Baldonado said. tainers? How much sun will they get? If they get daily sun, they’ll need daily water. If they are inside, think about bringing them outside every so often to give them some sun time.

re there some much-needed touch-ups you could be doing to keep your home in tip-top shape? Adding a new coat of paint is a quick, affordable and possibly the most impactful way to get your project done.

Prep, prime and primp Misusing color can be a surefire way to turn people off from your home. For a more inviting look that nearly everyone can enjoy, opt for neutral paint colors. A subtle beige, slight gray or even white can do the trick. First, move furniture out of the room and place drop cloths to protect the floor. Remove any picture frames, outlet covers and wall decor. Then, gently scrub the walls with a mild detergent and water mixture using a soft sponge to remove any dirt, grime or lint. Don’t forget to prime your walls before applying color to ensure the best end-results.

• Marry wisely. If you have a large pot or container and want to fill it with more than one plant, make sure to keep maintenance in mind when making pairings. Consider how much sun and water each plant needs, and ask the garden expert which ones thrive together.

Paint like a pro For an ultra-smooth finish, try Purdy’s line of Ultra Finish roller covers. These premium microfiber roller covers, available in 9-inch lengths and varying nap thickness, provide an even release of paint and deliver a consistent application from start to finish.

• Cut back. Pruning helps your plants to put their energy into healthy stems. Just as with water and sun requirements, pruning varies from plant to plant. Some herbs, such as oregano, should be pruned down to the

NANO TEK-ON

The perfect cure for limescale buildup A s part of American Heart Month in February, we celebrate affairs of the heart and the health of our hearts. At Nano Tek-On, every month is a celebration of something important to the heart of your home — its plumbing. If you sat down to talk to Harald von Sydow, director of Nano Tek-On, you’d learn all about how the plumbing in your home works like the arteries in your body. If your arteries are clogged, your heart has to work harder and harder to pump your blood. Ultimately, you could have a heart attack. Similarly, if calcium deposits and limescale are allowed to build up in your home’s plumbing, the water flows slower and slower and can eventually require a complete overhaul of your plumbing system. Open-heart surgery on your plumbing system is a very expensive procedure, and although such buildup is inevitable in Hawaii’s homes, Harald, like a cardiology consultant, will explain how through the science of nanotechnology, such buildup can be eliminated and prevented from reoccurring.

NANO TEK-ON contact // 395-2996 web // www.nanotekhi.com

Cardiologists use stents to open up arteries. Mr. von Sydow will tell you about the little unit called HydroFlow, a non-invasive procedure. Through the science of nanotechnology, HydroFlow attaches to the outside of your plumbing (no cutting of pipes) and then it goes to work to rid the pipes of corrosion and limescale. HydroFlow is silent, doesn’t change the taste of your water and is environmentally safe. Some medical interventions have harmful side effects. This is not the case with HydroFlow, which accentuates the positive. It also goes to work to reduce (and make it easier to remove) water spots on your bathroom fixtures, and the reduction in limescale buildup increases the lifespan of all of your water-using appliances (hot water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines). Plus, once the water starts flowing more freely through the plumbing system, you won’t be wasting water or the money that wasted water eats up. Some refer to HydroFlow as a water conditioner. There are major differences between HydroFlow and everyday water

SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING

Keeping your roof cool, protected o you made the decision to install a new roof or invest in solar power! In this day and age, the choices regarding “what product” and “which contractor” are wide ranging and plentiful. As far as roofing goes, our climate here on Oahu has us searching for not only a long-lasting product, but an energy efficient one to save us money and keep our home or building cool. Statistically, more home a building owners are going with roof-coating products, such as silicone and acrylics, than ever before. These products are not only economical, but highly energy efficient for reflectivity reasons, i.e. they do not allow the heat in. They are traditionally applied upon metal, asphalt and concrete. Home and business owners alike are commonly having this roof installed in a white color, as white will have the highest reflectivity, but it can be tinted. This is an excellent choice for low-slope homes or buildings with existing substrates that are in decent to good condition. Prices range from $3 to $5 per foot. Another low-slope product is the Single Ply Roof. This product consists of great big sheets of plastic or rubber compounds that are mechanically fastened or fully adhered

S

SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING contact // 396-9599 web // www.surfaceshieldroofing.com email // surfaceshield@hawaii.rr.com

to the roofing deck. The seams or overlap of the product are then heat welded together forming a monolithic (seamless) roof. This is the new building contractors roof-of-choice with great warranties and

excellent reflectivity. The price ranges from $4 to $12 per foot, depending on roof removal and insulation needed. For steeper roofing surfaces, metal products are a great option. Most of them are

available with a reflective energy-efficient finish and come in many beautiful colors. The standing seam metal roof is a great candidate for solar as fewer penetrations into the roof have to be made to attach the PV or hot-water panels. The price range is $8-10 per foot. Asphalt shingles have also come a long way regarding head distribution and energy efficiency. Most manufactures have a reflective shingle available that is very affordable. Additionally, there are a wide range of warranty options from 20 years to the lifetime of the structure. Pricing for this roofing system ranges from $3.50 to $6.50 per foot. As far as PV or solar power goes, do it! Do make sure, however, that your contractor pays respect to the roof. Look closely at the leak warranty that is offered and ask questions regarding the mounting system that will be used to keep your PV secure and your roof free of leaks. There are many PV and roof combo options available now. Call Surface Shield Roofing Company today for more information concerning your next roof or solar installation at 4972716. Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2013, the PV pros at Alternate Energy have spent the last two decades becoming the state’s solar experts. In the coming months, Honolulu Star-Advertiser readers will be introduced to some of these pros. People like operations team leaders Joe and Stan, both certified Mitsubishi installers; Kathyrn, permitting specialist and microinverter troubleshooter extraordinaire; Sherri, solar water heating guru; Amy, Housing Owners Association genius; Ashley the finance whiz, and many more! Finders keepers? Understanding and recognizing hoarding as a psychological condition, plus tips for controlling clutter and letting go

doubt suggests an emotional attachment, and, unless it is a family heirloom, you can release it or even list it on Craigslist under “free.” Nothing moves faster than free stuff. Contain the small stuff. Use baskets with covers and ornamental bowls to hold pens and pencils, mail, loose change, and odds and ends that collect on counters, creating clutter. Get furnishings that do double duty. A chest with storage can serve as both a coffee table and a place to store blankets. An ottoman with a top that opens can serve as a leg prop, a drink table, and a place to hold extra items Most importantly, stop judging yourself. Stop thinking that you are “bad” for not decluttering. Although I often talk about the energetic disadvantages of clutter, some clutter may have advantages, but I will save that for another article. Meanwhile, be present with your family and your life, and don’t waste time beating yourself up. It serves no purpose.

with

Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I am curious as to what defines a “hoarder.” When I see TV shows on hoarding, it is extreme and obvious. However, where do you move from having a cluttered house to being a hoarder? Do you have any experience with this?

hank you for asking this question. Interestingly, I do have a lot of firsthand experience in this area because of my upbringing and my feng shui work. My mother was and still is a serious hoarder, but it was only when I started this work that I came to see that hoarding was an undiagnosed mental disorder. In just a few months, the American Psychiatric Association will recognize it as a diagnosable mental disorder.

T

Here are a few of the many guidelines that point toward diagnosis as a true hoarder:

• Your possessions start spreading themselves out. Many of us have at least a drawer or two or even a closet or a room with an unorganized mess, or “clutter.” Be concerned when the unorganized mess starts taking over more than one room or even the entire home. • You just can’t seem to throw things away. Hoarders have a tendency to experience extreme anxiety when faced with throwing away things that friends and family would consider garbage. • “Things” in the home have taken over. One of the surefire clues is when the living area is unavailable for human habitation, having been taken over by “things” and only a narrow path of “free” space is available for walking through the room. • You dread having people see your home. The idea of others seeing your home causes anxiety and embarrassment, or, when others do visit, you make excuses as to why you have all these “things” cluttering your space. • You can’t imagine letting go of any of it. Even when you find your possessions unmanageable, you feel anxious when others offer to

help you to clean up. • You just can’t pass up a bargain. When you find a bargain or hear of a free giveaway, it hurts to pass it up. You buy or accept it thinking that you will have it if you ever need it. • You feel that people don’t understand you and your things. Even though reasonable people would consider your things trash, you have an extreme emotional attachment to them and consider them valuable. • You move stuff around without throwing anything away. Whenever you need to find something or sort through your stuff, instead of throwing things like old newspapers away, you just move them from pile to pile. • You can no longer function in your home. At the extreme, the sink is full of dishes and clutter has made it impossible to use your appliances and engage in daily functions like cooking and bathing.

Not Quite a Hoarder? If you recognize that you are nowhere near being a hoarder, but just need some clutter-controlling tips, the following should help. Decluttering does not involve magic, but the magic happens afterwards, as you see how taking control of your clutter leads to solutions and clarity in other areas of your life. Don’t try to do it all at once! It took time for your clutter to accumulate, so allow time to get your home back to a “happy” place. Start with a drawer, shelf, or corner of a room. A few small successes will help inspire you to continue. Spread your things out. Taking everything out of a drawer or closet and spreading it out will enable you to see what you have and to let go of more and organize more efficiently. If in doubt, throw it out. Seriously, when in doubt, either throw it out or give it away. Your

My favorite tip of all Go virtual: If you have things that are sentimental that you haven’t been able to let go of, take a few digital photos of them. This way you can release them and still “have” them, without using up valuable physical space in your home.

We are programmed Clutter is understandable because we live in a country of conspicuous consumption and are programmed to believe that acquisition of material goods gives us value. We face more choices in one trip to the grocery store than our grandparents faced in their entire lifetime. A multitude of choices psychologically leads us to acquire more than we really need.

Why buy new? A simple update will do I f you’re like most homeowners, you have several furniture and decor pieces around the house that have seen better days. And while the natural response is to throw away outdated items and buy something new, even lackluster home objects deserve a second chance. You can easily transform your trash into treasure with a little creativity and some elbow grease. Follow these quick and easy makeover tips and before you know it, those worn out and uninspiring pieces will be looking great again.

Endless possibilities Because of its resilience, plastic is a popular choice both around the house and the yard. From furniture to kids’ toys, even coolers, plastic surfaces are everywhere. And although these pieces are inexpensive

and durable, they often can look a little worse for wear after a few years of use. Luckily, it’s easy to make over what you already have with the new Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Primer from Krylon. Plastic Primer is made with Krylon’s innovative Fusion for Plastic paint technology to offer lasting durability and improved adhesion. Simply apply the primer to any outdated or lackluster plastic surface and then paint with any Krylon product you want, including one of the 85 colors in Krylon’s Indoor/Outdoor paint line. You’ll be able to truly customize any plastic surface to fit the theme you’re looking for. Even if the object is brand new, sometimes improvements still need to be made. Plastic storage drawers and cabinets are the perfect example of something new and yet still boring. They often come in clear or are limited to a few, select colors

Make a stylish transformation Do you have an old furniture piece that just doesn’t fit in with your decor? Chances are you do. But instead of going through the hassle of getting rid of it, breathe new life into it and transform the piece into something completely new. Take for example, an outdated or unsightly chest of drawers you may have hidden in the attic or in the corner of the room. Instead of hiding it - give it a new outlook on life. Simply sand it down and give it a fresh coat of paint that will coordinate with the rest of your room. Add a few embellishments, such as new knobs or paint accents and voila — you have a new nightstand or end table. You can also use the same creativity to transform an old vanity into a chic desk or an armoire into a stylish potting bench and garden center on your patio. This article Brandpoint.

nstead of buying new frames, repurposing old ones you already have lying around the house is a great way to create a gallery wall with some pizzazz. You’ll be able to display family portraits and your favorite memories while also adding a little style to a blank wall. With a few coats of spray paint, you can take frames from mismatched to mesmerizing. Spruce them up a bit more by using patterned papers as mats. Loungin’ Around Even the most unconventional spaces, like this pair of shipping containers, can be tranformed into a functional, stylish and relaxing environment

ou may have seen Russell Hata, CEO of Y. Hata, on the cover of last week’s MidWeek and read about how the company is celebrating its 100th year. Russell shared with me that one of the main reasons Y. Hata is not only still around, but also one of Hawaii’s leading food service companies, is because of its employees. He took me on a tour of the company’s 100,000-square-foot facility in Kalihi last summer and asked if I would take on the task of remodeling 14 spaces. In the next few weeks I’ll be sharing with you a few of these restyled spaces, including the most exciting part of the project, his gift to the employees. The company had never had an employee lounge, so they had to make one. They brought on-site two shipping containers from Aloha Containers that we combined to create a 30 by 16 foot space. Generally, these are used as makeshift offices at contracting sites and are not meant for stylish, >> After inviting decor. This was about to change. Russell gave me carte blanche, and I knew right away that I wanted to create a Googlelike setting that was fun and inspiring for everyone from drivers and warehouse crew to salespeople, office staff and executives. And it had to be a setting you’d never know was a container. Y. Hata’s color palette is red, black, gray and white. I laid the foundation of the containers with vinyl plank flooring in a >> Before lighter scraped reclaimed finish and clad an entire wall with 4 by 8 foot steel tured the colors red and black. eat, play Scrabble, have meetings or anything else. Finally, on the opposite end, we added a sitting area with mushroom-colored leather sofas, a reclaimed-wood coffee table, floating shelves and a plasma TV, the space grounded by a red Moroccan-inspired dhurrie rug. There was no doubt in my mind that guys would love the lounge. I added this superstylish area to be sure that women would feel comfortable as well. So how can you apply some of these principles to your employee setting or family room? Consider who you’re designing for. If it’s for both sexes, go for colors, styles and elements that will appeal to both. Be creative. Include touches of fun, but do it in

a stylish way with colors that you love or that reflect your brand. The most rewarding thing as a designer is to see people comfortable and happy in a space. I walked into the finished lounge one day and saw guys talking story at the table, playing dar ts and foosball, and women lounging on the sofas. That’s when I knew we’d done our job. Next week, I’ll continue with more Y. Hata spaces I restyled to inspire you for your home or office. To see more photos from this project, go to www.cathy leestyle.com.

Solar energy continues to be the smart way to go A dministrative changes by the Hawaii Department of Taxation regarding the application of the state’s Renewable Energy Tax Credit will likely impact the solar industry. New limitations of the tax credit could chill photovoltaic (PV) sales after a torrid 4th quarter in 2012 as consumers sought to beat the Dec. 31 deadline. The most visible change is the cap of $5,000 in tax credits per qualified PV system, per taxpayer, per year. In addition, a qualified “system” is defined as having a capacity of up to 5 kW. The credit itself can exceed this cap when the system size exceeds 5 kW. The tax department contemplated these revisions to the tax code to restrict and/or reduce the credits in an effort to combat the state’s budgetary shortfall on tax revenues. However, it did not consider the revenue stream created by a robust solar industry — general excise taxes paid by employers and employees, allied trades and businesses (electricians, plumbers, roofers, carpenters, etc.) and “normal” income taxes. These hastily crafted changes are temporary in nature as the Hawaii State Legislature is considering a number of bills during the current session that will permanently define the tax credit issue. Politicians will be considering input and testimony from the solar industry as well as economists and other financial experts. The state did have legitimate concerns about the manipulation of tax credits by certain unscrupulous PV contractors who sold high-priced systems on the basis that excessive tax credits could be claimed. If the department did not audit the taxpayer, he could conceivably “get away with it.” However, most of the solar companies ran their businesses “clean” and did not resort to such “shady” tactics. Some buyers think that they can wait for prices to drop, pointing to the steep declines in electronics and computers. The same cannot be said of solar, as material and labor costs continue to rise. Consumers contemplating PV systems in 2013 and beyond would be wise to consider this: Even without tax incentives, photovoltaic electrical systems are still attractive from a financial perspective. How to add spice to your kitchen or most, remodeling a kitchen includes a complete change of cabinets and countertop, maybe even appliances. If your cabinets are still in good condition but you want to improve your kitchen in some way, replacing your old countertop with one made of granite is a great choice. It is a good investment and will definitely change the atmosphere. Granite has high tolerance to cold and heat. You can safely place hot metal pans from your oven directly on the granite top without the need for a hot pad. Although, you will have to be wary of placing hot glass or ceramic dishes on it as they may crack if the countertop is too cold. This happens due to the difference in temperature and it is called thermal shock. As for cold items, you do not need to worry about condensation that may make your granite countertop have a dark spot if not properly sealed. Any condensation that may happen in the stone will fade away in an hour. Granite countertops may be used as a cutting board too. Because the hardness of granite is greater than steel, you do not need to worry about kitchen knives scratching your granite surface. Although, it is not recommended to always cut on your granite countertop as it will actually make your knife dull overtime. Another way to add to your kitchen or other rooms is to create a standalone island with cabinets as the base. It will be a great place to sit, eat, work, study or hang out. Along with brand new cabinets and countertops, there are other ways to improve your kitchen to be more functional and last longer. Pull-out drawers are a great add-on

‘1st Class’ in all your electric needs BY JACKIE M. YOUNG f you want the very best in electrical and solar contracting, look no further than Ron D Electrical Service LLC in Waipahu. “I really take pride in providing honest, reputable service, said owner Ron D. “I’m not one to shy away from challenges, and I always try to ensure that the customer is happy when I leave a job. That’s why a lot of my original customers from when we first opened still call me back for new projects. Ron, 41, opened his own business in 2005 after working for another electrical firm for 13 years. “I’d gone through the electrician’s program at Honolulu Community College and attained journeyman’s rank at work (given only after five years and 10,000 hours of experience), but I’d always wanted to be an electrical contractor. The Waipahu High School grad first opened his business out of his own home, working alone. “Those days I was working from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., he recalled. After growing his firm to 11 electrical workers and two office staff, Ron moved his company to his mother’s house three years ago and if things continue to go well, he may need to move to a commercial

an electrical contractor’s license is required for this), at a cost lower than most other firms. “I normally only charge $1,100 a panel, said Ron, “while many others charge $1,500 to $1,700. “And we work more efficiently, but follow all standard codes and installation procedures. I sometimes see houses we haven’t worked on showing what we call ‘spaghetti’ piping — piping on the outside

of the home — which doesn’t complement the exterior of the house at all. We don’t take those sorts of shortcuts and always route the wiring through the attic. Solar power is the trend now and is highly attractive because it’s environmentally friendly, free, it helps lower your electrical bill and there still is a tax incentive (30 percent from both the state and federal governments). Additionally, new technology has made the panels more efficient and cost-effective. “I just want to help customers obtain a quality system at a reasonable cost, said Ron, “and I think we have an excellent reputation for doing so. For a free estimate, call or email Ron D Electrical Service, LLC at 744-9255 or ron delectrical@hawaii.rr.com.

Unlike many dealers in Hawaii, Diamond Head Windows & Doors offers five top-quality brands of windows in any style or material you choose. The fact remains that even at reduced incentives, returns are extremely high. With the current federal credit of 30 percent ($9,000) and a $5,000 state cap, the return on the above example is $2,400 divided by $16,000, which equals 15 percent. There is nothing shabby about that kind of result. ISLAND BATH WORKS

The elderly can regain independence with walk-through tub conversions A

STORY BY

Michelle Lee

ll too often members of the Hawaii community either directly experience or hear of an elderly loved one tripping over a bathtub, causing serious injury, or worse. To prevent such happenings, Island Bath Works offers walk-through bathtub conversions, an innovative process in which the existing bathtub is modified by removing a portion of the side creating a seamless entrance allowing for safe and easy access.

The need for bathtub conversions Available on all the islands, Island Bath Works’ bathtub conversion is a popular option for those with limited mobility. “Many homeowners commit to doing a walk-through bathtub conversion only after having an accident,” said Eric Thompson, CEO and president of Island Bath Works. “Our goal is to help people take the necessary preventative measures before it’s too late.” With the middle-aged and elderly population in Hawaii increasing, as well as the number of households with multigenerational families living under one roof, there exists a need for bathrooms that can safely accommodate everybody, said Thompson.

Bathtub conversions do not have to be expensive or complex Oftentimes, the high cost of labor and supplies is the reason why many choose to hold off on bathtub conversions. However, thanks to various proprietary methods and techniques, Island Bath Works is able to maintain a significantly lower price tag than most bathroom renovation companies. “Traditionally, to get a walk-in shower or sit-in bathtub would involve costly demolition, plumbing and tile setting work which can range anywhere from $12,000 to $15,000 on average,” said Thompson. “Our tub conversion creates a low walkthrough entrance with a high quality and seamless finish that saves homeowners approximately 80 percent compared to doing full scale renovations.” Unlike most bathroom renovations, the walk-through bathtub conversion does not 24 • FEBRUARY 24, 2013

ISLAND BATH WORKS contact // 927-9228 web // www.islandbathworks.com

require major reconstruction or demolition. Labor time is minimal as most conversions can be completed in one day and homeowners can start using the shower the following day. “Most people think renovating any part of the bathroom is a weighty and complex job that requires not being able to use your

bathroom for weeks,” said Thompson. “Since we are converting your existing bathtub and not replacing it altogether, the entire process is quick and burden-free.” Homeowners can place the entryway on any part of the bathtub in any desired size up to three feet. Additionally, the conversion process is advantageously versatile

as it can also be done on any type of bathtub ranging from cast iron to fiberglass to steel materials. “Most homes in Hawaii were built with high-quality cast iron bathtubs, so for those homes it makes no sense to replace the bathtub completely,” said Thompson. In addition to the bathtub conversion, customers can also choose to refinish their bathtub. Unlike bathtub replacement, which would involve removing and replacing all components as well as redoing the plumbing configuration, refinishing resurfaces the existing fixtures to achieve a shiny and clean appearance. “We offer the American standard white or almond for bathtubs,” said Thompson. “For walls, homeowners can choose from a variety of granite-like stone finishes, which give the bathroom a very nice appearance.” Island Bath Works ensures the durability of all its products by guaranteeing a lifetime warranty on all labor and materials as well as a five-year warranty on any refinishing.
