JOANNE ROMERO
A Wall with All the Trimmings
s I mentioned before, I’m a student and a writer who spends most of my time working from home. When I first left the office routine, I worried about how productive I would be. I feared temptations luring me away from the computer and to the couch or back to bed, but the thing I feared most was the television. I have always enjoyed daytime TV lineups. The Price is Right, anyone? It turns out that avoiding temptations is easier than I thought. I limit my TV time to before and after work, and sometimes during lunch. Home-improvement channels are my go-tos. I’ve always been fascinated at how simple and relatively inexpensive small fixes and improvements can be. The designers always seem to implement crown molding. It’s something I’ve wanted to try but have always feared. While looking into installing crown molding, I found that others shared my fear. The pros say it’s not as hard as you may think, but I’m always inclined to seek out other alternatives before settling. That’s when I came across a simple solution that I felt most people could implement: picture molding. Picture molding is thinner than crown molding. Its intended use is to support hook-hung pictures, but it can also make for a great trim if hung slightly lower than the ceiling with white painted above it. First, take measurements of the room to determine how much molding you’ll need. Then, paint it white and allow it to dry. Cut pieces at 90 degrees according to your measurements. Next, determine how thick you’d like your trim. I suggest anywhere between 6 and 12 inches from the ceiling. Mark a spot at one end of the wall at this height. Then, use a yardstick and a pencil, and make light marks about 2 feet apart along the wall at this height. This will make hanging a straight rail easier. Apply construction adhesive on the back of the molding. Align it with the marks you made and press it against the wall.
A
S. TANAKA CONSTRUCTION Home Design • Free Consultations Have a friend hold it up while you nail it in. Use a pneumatic nailer with 2 1/2-inch nails, placing one every 6 inches down the line. Use nail set to drive down any nails that are sticking up, and fill holes with paintable caulk. Finally, paint the wall above the trim using the same paint you used earlier. While you are at it, paint over any of the caulk you applied. Repeat this process around the room and you’ll end up with spiffy new trim. I guess watching TV can be productive after all.

HR COVER STORY JANUARY 27 • 2012 3
Make an investment the entire ohana will appreciate
ow is the perfect time to go green with a photovoltaic (PV) system from Akamai Energy. The 2012 winter rush for solar is over, and Akamai Energy is prepared with enough install crews to handle your electrical demands, according to Akamai Energy managing director Richie Aqui. Akamai Energy continues to make the task of purchasing a photovoltaic solar system easy and affordable. A simple phone call to 445-9119 sets you up with a friendly Akamai Energy representative who will handle a short, 30-minute on-site survey of your home, a review of your electrical needs and a formal written estimate delivered within 24 hours of the time of visit. “Although, the revised Hawaii Solar Tax Credits have gone into effect as of Jan. 1, 2013, Akamai Energy has got Hawaii residents covered with our exclusive Akamai Rebate. Just think of it as an extension to Akamai Energy incentives,” managing director 2012’s Richie Aqui said Aqui. Hawaii still ranks among the nation’s most generous states with a 35 percent Hawaii Solar Tax Credit along with a 30 percent Federal Solar Tax Credit. Plus, with the Akamai Rebate, it’s a no brainer to go green with Akamai Energy. To help expedite any financing needs, Akamai Energy has teamed up with one of Hawaii’s top local credit unions with 11 Oahu branches to help you get financed quickly for your solar system. To apply with an Akamai Energy solar loan program partner, all you need is your Akamai Energy contract, signed loan application, two years of tax returns and two current pay stubs for all parties applying for the loan. You can get financed in as little as three to four business days. According to Akamai Energy’s senior sales consultant Frank Fasi Jr., “Akamai Energy sells nothing but the absolute best American-made panels from Solar World. These panels are salt-mist resistant ... perfect for Hawaii! Each panel comes with a 25-year warranty on the panel and invert-
N
er as well as a 10-year warranty on your installation.” Akamai Energy’s pricing is very affordable. “Going green should be an option for everyone ... not just some. Our quality of products and installation matched with affordability is the reason why we have so many happy customers and referrals,” said Aqui. Akamai Energy is there through every step of the installation process, from taking
care of all your city permits and HECO net metering forms to homeowner’s association paperwork and free 24-hour monitoring of your panels through Enphase. Along with Akamai Energy’s attractive residential and commercial PV and solar hot water systems, the company is proud to offer an exclusive nanotol cleaning solution that will ensure your panels are clean and efficient for years to come. Many solar operators believe that natural cleaning of
solar modules through rain and wind is sufficient, and therefore no additional manual cleaning is required. However, this is an outdated perspective. Not cleaning solar panels will often result in irreversible damage to the modules, a reduction in efficiency and a shortened lifespan of the equipment. To protect your investment and ensure peak performance, your solar panels need to be coated with Akamai Energy’s exclusive nanotol line to maximize your return. An easy-to-apply transparent coating will leave your panels efficient and clean for up to three years with no additional maintenance required. “I encourage everyone who has invested in a PV solar system, whether through Akamai Energy or another solar company, to have your panels cleaned with our exclusive nanotol technology,” said Aqui. Our nanotol line is also perfect for automotive, boats and yachts, fabric and wood, floors, lenses, electronics, home care, you name it. It even seals and protects concrete and keeps concrete clean. “That’s how good it is!” exclaimed Aqui. Looking to save money on gas and increase your gas mileage? Akamai Energy’s got that, too. “We are constantly looking for ways to help everyone save money. It is very costly to live in this beautiful state of Hawaii,” said Aqui. “Its time for everyone to ‘get akamai!’” You can visit Akamai Energy today, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the BIA Home Building & Remodeling Show, booth 410. While you’re there, enter to win a free starter photovoltaic solar system from Akamai Energy, Hawaii’s smart energy solution!

HK CONSTRUCTION
Choose a design-build firm for a home to last a lifetime BY KYLE GALDEIRA or more than 80 years, HK Construction has applied its extensive experience as a fourth-generation design-and-build company when creating custom homes for a host of Hawaii residents. The company is rooted in the principles of quality construction, incorporating the feedback of clients and completing projects on time — the perfect formula for making a dream home a reality. The fully bonded and insured family business strives to improve each year, and in 2013, the company is putting an emphasis on utilizing products that enhance the durability of the homes it improves by better withstanding Hawaii’s unique climate and environmental conditions. “We’ve put a concerted effort into product research, and what we’re looking to do is include products in each home that are more durable to withstand Hawaii’s weather, including the rain and tropical heat,” said Johnny Makiling, senior design consultant at HK Construction. “We also want to integrate products that are more resilient to termites. We’re trying to make our homes more durable, while

still remaining affordable.” The design-build firm fuses a complete team of design professionals with building experts, and this concept employed by HK Construction provides homeowners with one point of contact throughout the project. By utilizing a design-build firm, projects can be costengineered to fulfill specific design and budgetary needs, maximizing the time and money spent. HK Construction provides a wide range of contracting services, as well as a comprehensive package from sourcing all the necessary materials to building one’s dream home. The company has access to an array of premier vendors responsible for supplying exceptional cabinetry, fixtures, countertops, flooring and appliances. If space is an issue, HK Construction can also move walls or increase square footage with a room addition. “We try to avoid the bait and switch by letting customers know exactly what we’re doing up-front — we don’t want to over-promise and under-deliver,” said Makiling. “A lot of builders will quote a price only to earn the customers’ business, and then turn around later and
present a different cost. We’ve been around for quite some time, and that should put customers at ease in knowing that we’re here to stay.” The company also has a specialized division to focus on kitchen and bath remodeling jobs with a team of interior designers who have an average of 15 years of training, education and experience in their specialized domain. They’re also members of the National Kitchen & Bath Association and American Society of Interior Designers. HK Construction continues its series of educational seminars that cover various home building and remodeling topics. The next seminars are scheduled for Jan. 31 at Pearl Country Club, and Feb. 1 at Ward Warehouse’s Kakaako Room. Both will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

HAWAII GLASS BLOCK
Freshen up your bath with a new shower H awaii Glass Block will host a free workshop, “Out with the Old — In with the New,” to show you how you can remove your old bathtub or shower and replace it with the wedi® 100 percent Waterproof Shower System and add a glass block wall so you can eliminate a shower door or shower curtain. The free workshop will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Hawaii Glass Block showroom and warehouse located at 284 Kalihi St. The wedi® Fundo Total Shower Solution is the industry’s innovative application for constructing waterproof tiled showers. With its uncomplicated assembly process and ability to be tiled the same day, the system installs quickly and efficiently, reducing substrate preparedness from days to hours.
The wedi® System is in-stock at Hawaii Glass Block — the Fundo bases can be easily cut to size or extended using presloped extension panels to fit any custom shower application. Additionally, it is 80 percent lighter than conventional shower methods, so the wedi® system can be installed without threatening a building’s structural properties. The wedi® extruded polystyrene products are used to support Energy Star-qualified construction. Here are the topics that will be covered: • Why should I use the wedi® system? • Do I have room for a glass block wall panel? • Is glass block difficult to install? • Will I need a shower door? The workshop is ideal for homeowners

Send a Clear Message By understanding that the environment we live in is a reflection of our inner feelings, we can open our home’s energy to align with our true desires
mean that she would have to dramatically shift her lifestyle focus from “me” to “us.” Deep down, she didn’t want to give up a lot of the things she cherished, such as doing what she wanted when she wanted and not having to be accountable to anyone else. Together we came to the conclusion that what she really wanted was companionship — someone with whom to share common interests from time to time. She loved living by herself and was not ready to share her home.

Alice Inoue
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I was at a presentation you did last week where you mentioned in passing how our environments have messages that you can read that reflect our internal state. I was intrigued by what you said and wish to know more. Can you comment further about this topic?
he interpretation of environmental symbols is one of my favorite topics. Everything in your environment “speaks” to you, reflecting what is going on inside you and those with whom you live. This energetic message is picked up by your subconscious as you and others spend time in that environment, reinforcing the message. Over the years, I have found hundreds of amazing correlations between what is happening in people’s lives and what I see in their homes.
T
Her pictures and home were contrary to her desires One consultation story that illustrates my point comes to mind as I’m writing this. A few years ago, I met with a woman I’ll call Jennifer, whose husband had died more than a dozen years prior. She wanted to share her life with someone new in the way she had with her husband many years ago. She told me she had been ready for years, but nothing had manifested. She was hoping that I could help her use feng shui to open up her space to find a serious relationship. As I was assessing her home, I noticed that the way she set up her surroundings was incongruent with what she said she wanted in her life. In fact, it was completely the opposite.
What I noticed about her home Everything in her home was “single.” In her bedroom she had one lamp, one pillow, one end table and on the wall were three
My advice Instead of suggesting that she change her bedroom (an intimate room) to reflect the “pair” energy, bringing in another pillow, another end table and changing her paintings to show love and partnership, I suggested she put her focus on the common areas of her home (social rooms). In this way, she could open up the energy to congruently and authentically depict what she really wanted. images depicting a woman alone. In one of the images, the woman was sleeping alone; in another, she was lounging alone. These were “happy” alone images; in other words, not lonely looking. In her living room was a large painting of a woman tending to her garden — peaceful and alone. Her TV room had only one cozy recliner, and even her dining room table where she ate her meals had only one chair. Following that theme, anything in “pairs” was split up and its matching half was found somewhere else in the home, including matching figurines and images of males and females. Even the salt and pepper shakers were split up — the salt near the stove and the pepper on the dining table. The need to get clarity on true desires Since everything about her home
screamed “single,” and because I know the environment is an external manifestation of everything going on within, I wanted to make sure she truly wanted to find a new mate. When people truly want something, the environment begins to shift naturally to reflect that new desire. Although she told me she wanted a new mate in her life, I saw nothing to even remotely support this statement. I find that often when people say they want something that does not manifest for them, they are subconsciously resisting it. Why? Because they either do not want to leave their comfort zone or they gain some benefit by staying in their current situation. Ultimately, if what you want is not in alignment with how you feel subconsciously, no matter what you do with the environment, it will never manifest. Our follow up conversation I decided to talk to Jennifer a little bit more, and we uncovered that she was quite happy living a single life, but a few years ago she got the idea that she “should” start getting serious about finding someone. After our conversation, she realized that the reality of having a serious relationship would
What about you? Carefully look around your home and ask yourself what it is saying. Is the energetic message congruent with how you feel? Do you need to change some things to match your heartfelt desires? If so, the beginning of the year is an excellent time to start.

Refreshing your bath, kitchen can be a breeze I f there’s one room in the house that cries out for fresh air, it’s the kitchen. And if there’s a second room that can benefit from Mother Nature’s sweet breath, it’s the bathroom. When humidity and odors build up in a room, a host of disagreeable results arises, from mold and mildew to dank, unpleasant air. Expelling stale indoor air and replacing it with fresh outside air is the best way to ensure continuous indoor air quality, the Home Ventilating Institute said. Modern construction, however, makes it virtually impossible to achieve sufficient exchange of air without mechanical assistance. For tunately, from venting skylights to high-tech exhaust fans, there are plenty of ways to ensure ventilation in the kitchen and bath without sacrificing a comfor table atmosphere: Become a fan of fans Few rooms are as prone to moisture buildup as the bathroom. Since this room is also one of the most-used in any home, keeping it fresh and comfortable can be a challenge. Venting fans are a
must for full bathrooms where bathing occurs, and a comfort-enhancing plus in half baths and powder rooms. If your bathroom lacks an exhaust fan, installing one is often within the abilities of a savvy do-it-yourselfer. It’s important for your fan to vent outdoors. “Exhaust” fans that do not vent outdoors simply recirculate stale, damp air within the room, or shunt it to another area of the home — such as the attic — where moisture can lead to mildew. Consider installing a timer to help ensure your fan runs for an adequate amount of time after every shower or bath. Skylighten up your life Thanks to resources like Energy.gov, you may already know that a properly installed, energy-efficient skylight can help you control heating, cooling and lighting costs. Skylights can also be an excellent source of passive ventilation. “Solar-powered fresh air skylights with a no-leak warranty admit healthful natural light while providing passive ventilation,” said Ross Vandermark of VELUX America,
makers of Energy Star-qualified skylights. “Passive ventilation gives homeowners the benefit of fresh air without adding to their utility bills. A skylight doesn’t need to draw electricity to move air the way a venting fan does. What’s more, skylights can be equipped with solar blinds for additional light control and energy efficiency. And when a homeowner chooses both a solar-powered fresh air skylight and
solar-powered blind, both the products and the installation may be eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit as a green home improvement.” Venting skylights in kitchens passively exhaust hot air, moisture and odors while admitting additional light for more pleasant cooking, dining and enter taining. And skylights, along with fashionable accessories including blinds, can be controlled

Win with windows
W
indows have always been a great way to welcome fresh air into our homes. It’s possible to maximize the benefit your home receives from opening the windows. Whenever possible, create a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of the room or opposite ends of the house. Having two open windows will help maximize air flow. Avoid blocking windows with furniture or heavy drapes that can block the movement of air. Ensure windows always have screens and keep screens clean and free of debris. Screens should always have locks,
manually or by remote control. The same applies in baths, where humidity levels are often high and the need for ventilation is constant. Skylights also add a big plus in baths with the privacy they afford as opposed to vertical win-
dows. The same holds true in bedrooms. Plus, gazing at the nighttime sky from your bed is sometimes a nice option.

Going Hot ’n Cold Finding the right combination of warm and cool color accents within your space can be just the thing to make your design temperature rise
or many people, accessorizing seems to be the hardest part of decorating. You’ve got your large elements like flooring, furniture and window treatments in, but what accents do you add to turn your room into something that looks like it’s from a magazine? A very basic tip is to stay within your color temperatures. Staying within a warm color palette or a cool one gives the room a directional statement that helps pull it together. Designers know how to mix warm and cool colors seamlessly. And for those of you with mixed warm-cool rooms who want to go more in one direction, I’ve got some tips that will help. But first I want to give you some ideas on how to stay in one color temperature. When I designed our showroom, I created a warm and a cool accessories wall to illustrate color temperatures for customers. Can you tell which is the warm and which is the cool wall? Here’s a hint: Do you remember over the holidays, I told you that the glisten of gold reminds me of the warmth of family and Christmas, and the cool shimmer of silver makes me think of New Year’s celebrations? Keep these concepts in mind as you’re accessorizing. If you’re going for a cozy, romantic, inviting space, and like many people you already have neutrals such as a brown sofa or beige carpeting, you’ve got the basics for a warm palette. Now you want to look for rugs, pillows, artwork, lamps and other accents that have browns and other earth tones, oranges and reds, some golds or hammered dark metals and wood tones. Obviously there are other principles that add to the equation, such as decorating styles and scale and proportion, but we’re just talking temperature here. For cool spaces, the same principles apply. Cool palettes feature whites, silvers, char-

coals and cool hues of colors. What’s a cool version of red? Pink! Cool versions of green include mint and sage. Lavender is cool, so is glacier blue. All these colors help a room look contemporary and more spacious. Now, many of you already have large, warm, neutral elements in your rooms but want to tie in more cool, contemporary elements. Here are some tricks for seamless transitions. If you have flooring that’s rich and warm in tone, and you want to go cooler without the hassle and expense of changing out the floors, look for an area rug with a modern element and some cooler grays and greens.
Then perhaps find a chair with a reclaimed gray wash tone and place the legs on both the floor and rug. Area rugs can be great this way because they help transition the floor with different new elements that can go on top. If you want to go more modern and cool in your window treatments, try pulling in some silvery grays and golds, which is a hot combination. These colors span both cool and warm, so your floors won’t feel out of place. This trick also works with other types of flooring, like terra cotta or tile. Find the right transitional rug, perhaps a piece of furniture to sit on top, then tie in the window treatments. And don’t be scared of window treatments! They don’t have to be expensive. You can get ready-made drapery panels and all kinds of options at discount stores. And remember, these don’t have to cover the entire window. They can hang at the sides just to tie in a color, texture or pattern.
Other quick transitional tips: If you want to bring in a warm Asian, Mediterranean or island feel, decorative mirrors are great. Look for one that has interesting lines and weathered gold or hammered bronze or dark woods. Your large furniture pieces? You can transition from warm to cool by re-upholstering or simply adding throw pillows to bring in warmth or coolness. Whatever you already have, and whichever direction you want to go in, you’re not stuck. It’s like six degrees of separation:You can’t make a leap. But if you can find something in the middle that will help old and new, warm and cool elements make sense, that’s the key to your design. HAWAII CENTRAL FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
An easy financing solution for your solar PV system I f you’re tired of paying high electric bills that only seem to increase every year, consider going green in 2013! By investing in a renewable energy system for your home, you’ll reduce your utility bills and provide a direct return on investment that is sure to pay for itself in years to come. Among the many green products currently out there, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have become the “it” renewable energy system to install in your home. PV systems are used to generate electricity by harnessing the energy from the sun. Once installed, the benefits of a PV system can be seen each
month with a drastic decrease in your electric bill. However, the initial cost to purchase and install a PV system in your home isn’t cheap. There are state and federal tax credits to assist with these overall costs, but even with these tax benefits, other assistance may be needed when making this type of investment in your home. To assist with the costs of installing a PV system, Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) introduces its new-andimproved Solar Photovoltaic Loan Special to make it easier for homeowners to go green and save. Unlike many other PV
loans offered in Hawaii, HCFCU’s PV Loan Special allows you to work with the solar contractor of your choice and does not require the use of your home’s equity. With no payments for the first six months, the company’s Solar PV Loan Special was revised in hopes to make PV systems more affordable to members and other homeowners. With flexible terms available, the experienced loan officers are there to work with you to find the best financing solution for your specific needs and situation. If going green in ‘13 is one of your remodeling goals, let HCFCU help you achieve this goal by getting a renewable energy sys-

SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING
‘Shield’ your roof in preparation for PV A s more and more Hawaii homes and businesses are looking into solar installation to help fight rising energy costs, the number of homes and businesses switching to solar panels is on the rise for both residential and commercial properties statewide. Before installing a solar panel array, it is important to assess the condition of the existing roof. By ensuring the integrity of the existing roofing system, you will avoid future problems such as leakage, repair or the need to remove panels to reroof. Certain types of roofs, such as tile and shingle roofs, can present challenges to the solar contractor like cracked tiles or loose shingles. By having your roof inspected and getting the necessary repairs prior to solar installation, you ensure that your roof is in proper condition for solar installation and is less likely to cause you problems in the future. Your existing roof ’s warranty is another important factor to consider. Knowing the warranty of an existing roof is vital when deciding to go solar. If the warranty will expire soon or a homeowner has experi-
SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING contact // 396-9599 web // www.surfaceshieldroofing.com email // surfaceshield@hawaii.rr.com enced persistent leakage, it is a good idea to install a new roof before making the investment for solar. Removing solar equipment to make repairs to a damaged roof can be quite costly. Therefore, it is important to know how much longer you have until your warranty expires, so you can make the best decision. An inexpensive way to enhance the integrity of the substrate (roofing surface) on your flat or low-pitch roof is through the installation of a coating system. This watertight system ranges in price from roughly $3 to $5 per foot and holds material warranties ranging from five years to the lifetime of the structure. It is advantageous to coat your roof prior to solar installation because this creates a watertight membrane that will not allow
water to penetrate and cause leakage in the future. For steeper roofing surfaces, asphalt shingles are a great option. They also are cost-effective and have many great warranty options from 20 years to the lifetime of the structure. Pricing for this roofing system ranges from $3.50 to $5.50 per foot. Here at Surface Shield Roofing, we work on a daily basis with many local solar companies to ensure that the integrity of the roof isn’t compromised and remains
sound before and after solar installation. We will assist you with an assessment of the existing roof and help you determine the most cost-effective and efficient way to go solar without needless costs longterm. Whether it be a water-tight coating system for flat and low-pitch roofs, a new metal roof or a new asphalt shingle roof, we will help you from start to finish and ensure your roof is in the perfect condition for solar installation. HI-POWER SOLAR
Taking a look at the solar industry’s future in Hawaii A dministrative changes by the Hawaii Department of Taxation regarding the application of the state’s Renewable Energy Tax Credit will likely impact the solar industry. New limitations of the tax credit could chill photovoltaic (PV) sales after a torrid 4th quarter in 2012 as consumers sought to beat the Dec. 31 deadline. The most visible change is the cap of $5,000 in tax credits per qualified PV system, per taxpayer, per year. In addition, a qualified “system” is defined as having a capacity of up to 5 kW. The credit itself can exceed this cap when the system size exceeds 5 kW. The tax department contemplated these revisions to the tax code to restrict and/or reduce the credits in an effort to combat the state’s budgetary shortfall on tax revenues. However, it did not consider the revenue stream created by a robust solar industry — general excise taxes paid by employers and employees, allied trades and businesses (electricians, plumbers, roofers, carpenters, etc.) and “normal” income taxes. These hastily-crafted changes are temporary in nature as the Hawaii State Legislature is considering a number of bills during the current session which will permanently define the tax credit issue. Politicians will be considering input and testimony from the solar industry as well as economists and other financial experts. The state did have legitimate concerns about the manipulation of tax credits by certain unscrupulous PV contractors who sold high-priced systems on the basis that excessive tax credits could be claimed. If the department did not audit the taxpayer, he could conceivably “get away with it.” However, most of the solar companies ran their businesses “clean” and did not resort to such “shady” tactics. Some buyers think that they can wait for prices to drop, pointing to the steep declines in electronics and computers. The same cannot be said of solar, as material and labor costs continue to rise. Consumers contemplating PV systems in 2013 and beyond would be wise to consider this: Even without tax incentives, photovoltaic electrical systems are still attractive from a financial perspective. A $30,000 system (20 panels

The more efficient and aggressivelypriced systems can return nearly 10 percent. The fact remains that even at reduced incentives, returns are extremely high. With the current federal credit of 30 percent ($9,000) and a $5,000 state cap, the return on the above example is $2,400 divided by $16,000, which equals 15 percent. There is nothing shabby about that kind of result. Consumers who undertake action as quickly as possible benefit themselves by saving on their utility costs sooner than later. Consumers should definitely “pull the trigger” and “go green.” Hi-Power Solar is a “full-service” contractor offering sales and service for solar water heaters as well as PV systems. Principals Ron Romero, with more than 20 years in the solar business, and Matt Adams, with more than 16 years, offer an excellent balance of top-notch components, expert installation and competitive pricing. Be cautious in choosing the most appropriate solar system design and explore the financial costs impacting your pocketbook.

NANO TEK-ON
Resolve to get rid of those limescale spots S ome say New Year’s resolutions are made to be broken. But here’s one that you can keep all year long. Resolve to get rid of the streaks, calcium deposits, discoloration and stains on windows and bathroom shower doors, bathroom fixtures and marble and granite counters. This could possibly be the easiest resolution you have ever made, thanks to a local company, Nano Tek-On. Harald von Sydow, director of Nano Tek-On, is the expert on cleaning and maintaining such surfaces. He explains that glass and natural stone are really not solid surfaces, but have microscopic pores that act like sponges soaking up water, grime, soap scum, mildew, bacteria, salts, oils, calcium deposits and more. And, if you don’t believe that, take a close look at your glass shower door. The more minerals that are absorbed, the bigger the buildup and the more difficult it is to remove. The same thing happens inside of the pipes in your home. You can’t see it, but it adds to the buildup that you can see, especially on shower doors and in appliances
that use water. Limescale and calcium deposits clog plumbing, which decreases water flow and wastes water. They corrode water-using appliances including hot-water heaters and dishwashers, and the calcium deposits spot shower doors as well as kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Remember how shiny and clear your shower doors used to be? Von Sydow can help you get it looking new again, and he can help you make sure it stays that way. The pros at Nano Tek-On remove corrosion and limescale with a little unit called HydroFlow. Through the science of nanotechnology, HydroFlow attaches to the outside of your plumbing (no cutting of pipes), then it goes to work to rid the pipes of corrosion and limescale. HydroFlow is silent, doesn’t change the taste of your water and is environmentally safe, just like all the products Nano Tek-On uses to clean and seal glass, granite and concrete surfaces to protect them from being attacked again by contaminants. You see, the same thing that happens inside the pipes in your house also happens to your windows and walkways. It is

CS DESIGN BUILDERS
Bring family together by opening the kitchen S ome people say, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” Unfortunately, for many homeowners in Hawaii, this is exactly what they want to do because of the heat and lack of ventilation. The small, confined kitchens that many Island homes were built with often ruin the enjoyment of cooking. One local family from Kailua turned to CS Design Builders for help. “When we’re cooking for the family, the kitchen is about 20 degrees hotter than the rest of the house!” the Brogans told CS Design Builders during their free initial measure and estimate. Even worse, poor planning on the part of the original homebuilder placed the appliances and cabinetry in odd places, often causing family members to bump into each other while trying to move around in the kitchen at the same time. The oddly placed appliances and cabinets also wasted useful countertop space. CS Design Builders took all of these problems into consideration during their free computer design session with the Brogans during for their kitchen renovation. After their renovation was finished, visi-

tors to their home were amazed at the transformation. The difference was so dramatic that many of their friends thought the Brogans had expanded the kitchen by several feet in each direction. The family’s new kitchen is an expansive space integrated into the rest of the home by removing walls and opening up the room, not only creating a beautiful contin-
uous room, but also eliminating their overheating problem and making the kitchen more ergonomic and functional. Gorgeous granite countertops compliment the stainless steel appliances, and the new hood keeps the kitchen air fresh, even while cooking. With their new kitchen opened up into the rest of the home, the family members are now more engaged with one another and are able to move around easily. “Sometimes, you need to open up space to bring a family closer together,” a family
member said. It’s ironic, but true. CS Design Builders is Hawaii’s one-stop shop for all of your home renovation needs. The company eliminates the headache of working with multiple contractors, designers and vendors by working with you as a single point of contact and accountability to ensure your entire renovation is handled smoothly and efficiently, delivering superior workmanship on-time and on-budget. The Brogans love their new kitchen, a dream come true. Isn’t it time you made your own dream kitchen come true?

DIAMOND HEAD WINDOWS & DOORS
Here’s the scoop on the latest window, door technology T o help homeowners learn about what’s new in the window and door market, Diamond Head Windows & Doors general manager Mark McKinstry drew upon his years of experience to answer a few questions about the company’s exciting new products.
Q: What is the reason for the rapid expansion of Diamond Head Windows? A: After twenty-five years in the windows business, my brother and I realized that we needed products that specifically addressed the problems that the climate in Hawaii presents. We wanted to address issues such as hardware that would not deteriorate like most styles currently available and sold in Hawaii. We use stainless-steel hardware throughout our products. People in Hawaii want the maximum ventilation that they can get without the drawbacks of jalousie windows. We have come up with windows that provide both ventilation, security and prevention from wind-driven rain entering the home. We also have specially built screens that hold up to the salt and wind, and can be easily removed for cleaning from inside the home. Additionally, we offer a lifetime screen warranty and installation warranty and have the best overall warranty in Hawaii. Our company also offers a variety of colors in vinyl windows and doors beyond the typical white or tan. Our Amerimax windows are available in 10 exterior colors. We just installed windows in a home at 1316 Piikoi St. in green that beautifully integrate with the home. Q: What’s new in the window and door market? A: As with any industry, there are always new innovations and products. We just finished attending the International Builders Show in Las Vegas and we regularly meet with manufacturers. If you have ever traveled to Europe, you might have encountered windows that not only slide back and forth, but also swing inwards and tilt backwards. While these features are perfect for Hawaii, the issue has been building them with stainless-steel hardware. We now have an exclusive distributorship with German-based manufacturer Rehau, a company that can produce windows and sliding doors with features like tilt-in (providing ventilation even during wind-driven rainstorms) and swing-in options. These are vinyl frames that are hurricane-rated and suitable for high-rise condominiums.

DISCOUNT WINDOWS & DOORS
Enjoy durable windows made for island lifestyle H ow do you develop and design a perfect window for Hawaii? Prior to 2008, all windows sold in the state were designed and built on the Mainland and were less than ideal for use in the Islands. The Makai Range of windows, developed by Discount Windows & Doors, is the only window specifically designed for Hawaii. Existing vinyl frames frequently would yellow or become brittle with age; the thickness of the glass used was woefully inadequate for use in a hurricane zone; not one company utilized 100 percent stainlesssteel hardware in their windows; the screens used were of poor design and didn’t last; and thermal efficiency was something used on a freezer — not a window. In 2008, all of that changed; using state of the art technology, Discount Windows & Doors developed a window system designed for the 21st Century and beyond — the company’s Makai series of windows and doors. They not only improved every facet of existing windows, but developed a window system never used in Hawaii before. Hawaii has some of the most extreme

Pure Virgin Vinyl, with its high percentage of titanium dioxide, is the only vinyl able to stand up to the harsh exposure of Hawaiian sunshine. Hawaii is in a hurricane zone — meaning, the state is likely to experience a direct hit from a hurricane in the near future. Most existing vinyl windows will be all but destroyed when that happens. The vinyl frame on the Makai window series is a high-impact profile able to withstand considerable impact without failing. To complement the strong frame, doublestrength glass is used, which is twice as thick as common glass used in the vast majority of replacement windows. The combination of these sturdy frames and double-strength glass enables these windows to endure winds of up to 180 miles
per hour. In fact, all Makai windows are so strong that they are commercially rated and are frequently used in high-rise condos. The majority of homes in Hawaii experience varying degrees of salt exposure. The combination of high humidity and salinity in the air, along with tropical temperatures, create an extremely corrosive environment, which most people can attest to. The Makai range of windows and doors addresses this issue by utilizing the highest grade of stainless steel hardware available. Salt can also be problematic on glass, causing etching and constant staining. It also attracts moisture and dirt. By using Cardinal Neat Self Cleaning Glass, the problem is eliminated. Virtually all homes in Hawaii experience an area that is hot at some time of the day.
The solution is using Cardinal 366 Low E, one of the most energy-efficient glasses available in North America today. By using a combination of Cardinal 366 Low E with Argon and Neat Self Cleaning Glass, more than 90 percent of heat can be reflected out of the home. Finally, screens are the first item to deteriorate in most windows because of their poor design. Discount Windows & Doors has developed a strong screen system that can be removed from inside the home and, in most cases, with one hand. To learn more about these state-of-thear t, high-performance windows, call Discount Windows & Doors at 673-6656.
