JOANNE ROMERO

Let it shine ately, I’ve been on a de-cluttering binge. When our guests left town, I felt the urge to clean everything in sight, and that included taking the time to sort through some serious piles of papers, gadgets and clothing. Now that I can enjoy a little more walking space, I’m also noticing little dark corners. The last thing I want to do is add a standing or table lamp to a newly uncovered space. I just finished taking those things out! Instead, a wall sconce seems to be the best solution. It can add the perfect amount of accent lighting and décor without taking up extra space. Before picking out a sconce, think about how much electrical work you are willing to tackle. A traditional sconce will require some wiring and even some hole cutting in your

L

wall, but the good news is there is a wide variety of wireless sconces that run on batteries. Electrical wiring and cutting holes into walls are not ideal DIY work when you live

in a condo, so we’ll go the wireless route. First, determine where you’d like it to go and mark it with a pencil. The usual height for sconces is about 60 inches off the ground. Clean and sand the area, making sure to wipe up any dust. Next, take some heavy-duty hook-andloop tape and cut a piece to match the sconce’s mounting bracket. Hook-and-loop tape is a type of tape with sides that adhere to each other. The Velcro® brand made the hook-and-loop technology popular, and now many brands make the tape in both self- and non-adhesive versions. If you decide to go with a non-adhesive version, keep in mind that you’ll also need to use industrial-strength glue to make it stick. Because I’m working on getting rid of clutter, I’ll opt for the self-adhesive sort. Remove the paper backing on the tape and place the “loop” section on the wall, in the spot you marked. Place the “hook” section on the sconce’s mounting bracket. Allow the adhesive to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, secure the bracket to the wall by matching up the tape and reconnecting it. Attach the sconce by sliding and locking the mount to

the mounting bracket. Now you’re ready to light up. One of the best things about the wireless sconce is that it requires no long-term commitment. It’s easy to hang, and won’t affect your electric bill. If you want to go the wired route, and you’re new to electrical work, it’s best to consult a professional.

HR COVER STORY JANUARY 20 • 2013 3

Bring on the best in cabinets, granite You’ll find an array of design schemes for your kitchen or bath at Da Wing Trading LLC’s showroom BY SARAH PACHECO

here’s a new kid on the cabinet-andgranite supplier block, and its name is Da Wing Trading LLC. A family-owned-and-operated venture, Da Wing Trading opened its doors last year at 2006 Republican St., offering solid wood cabinets with plywood boxes (no MDF, particle board or pressed wood) and granite countertops out of its 8,000 square feet of warehouse and showroom space. “We own the property where we store in-stock cabinets and granite, thus we don’t have to pay rent, which enables us to pass the savings on to our customers,” said manager Harry Kwan. “We sell (our products) at affordable prices, which are the people’s prices,” added Kwan’s uncle Tommy Chan, who works in the sales department. Kwan goes on to note that the family decided to invest in the 10,000-square-foot property rather than renting it out because they saw it as a good long-term investment for future generations. Additionally, the property has ample onsite parking, a scarcity in the industrial Kalihi area. “That’s something very important to have,” Chan stated. Though Da Wing Trading only deals in cabinets and countertops at the moment, Kwan explains that they carry those made of quality materials. For example, countertops are made from granite imported from China, while cabinets are made using alder and maple woods. “These are solid woods, the good woods,” said Chan of the cabinets, which come standard with soft-close hardware and are available in four different color variations, including light cherry, maple, white (maple) and dark cherry (alder only). “Cabinets and countertops go hand-inhand,” Kwan said. “We chose to focus on granite for countertops because it is a unique, sturdy, natural rock, and a high-quality addition that can enhance the look and feel of a kitchen or bathroom.” And for home-improvers looking for a little advice on their next kitchen or bath renovation, Da Wing Trading’s staff of pro-

An energy source for 20 years A

lternate Energy Inc. thanks its customers, vendors and staff for 20 years of support in helping Hawaii move toward greater energy sustainability. The solar PV company invites everyone to come celebrate with its staff members at the BIA Hawaii exposition, Jan. 25-27. “We’ve been committed to customer needs from the beginning,” said Bruce Ekimura, Alternate Energy founder and president. “It’s the foundation of our business and the reason we come to work every day.” Originally a plumber, Bruce got his start in the ’70s working side by side with his father. Gradually, he noticed customers’ growing interest in solar water heating. Bruce became an early specialist in the installation of solar hot water heaters and later photovoltaic (PV) systems. In 1993, Alternate Energy was officially incorporated. Since then, Alternate Energy has experienced steady growth, with tremendous progress especially in the past 12 months. With an expanded workload — and more importantly, the growing professional and technical staff to handle it — Alternate Energy has enjoyed its position as

the No. 1 residential solar PV installer in Hawaii. The company’s expertise has even gained the attention of Mitsubishi Electric, one of the world’s premier solar panel manufacturers, which awarded Alternate Energy its Elite Dealer Status, followed by the international distinction of being a Mitsubishi Electric Certified Installer. The criteria are so stringent that Alternate Energy is the only PV company in the world outside of Japan with this high honor. Continued expansion and focus on excellent customer service is planned for Alternate Energy in 2013. As of Jan. 1, Alternate Energy now offers a competitive financing option through a partnership with Central Pacific Bank and its PV Power Loan, which features zero percent APR and no payments for the first 18 months. Alternate Energy’s administrative service team will also expand to continue offering the best in timely, informative and courteous help to its customers.

AIRE CONDITIONER SHOPPE

Have a ‘cool’ year with an efficient air conditioner N ow is the best time to install a new split-ductless system. By opting for an efficient, split-ductless air conditioning system, you can guarantee the ideal climate for your home or office. Systems sold and installed by the Aire Conditioner Shoppe are available in a variety of styles and price ranges. “The best time to service your existing split-ductless system is between the months of November and March, so when the warm weather hits, it will continue to operate with high efficiency,” said Aire Conditioner Shoppe owner Neil Wiedemann. The latest split-ductless systems provide zoned comfort and are engineered to install quickly and easily. These systems available from the Aire Conditioner Shoppe, which specializes in Fujitsu and Mitsubishi, provide both heating and cooling with the push of a button on the remote control. They also provide individual temperature control throughout your home or business so each room, zone or floor will be the temperature you set. Concerned about air quality? These systems have the capability to filter out dust, mold spores and microorganisms. The Dry Mode helps to control humidity levels, even when cooling isn’t needed. Other standard features include Sleep Timer Auto Changeover and 24-Hour Timer Cold Prevention. Concerned about appearance? The cooling-only wallmounted units, designed for single rooms, are slim and stylish. Indoor units have a clean, aesthetic design and are power-

ful, though small and shorter in length than competing units. The variablespeed compressor helps systems adapt to shifts in heat load caused by afternoon sun. Concerned about noise? These units are so quiet you won’t even know they’re on. How about cost? “The operative word is ‘efficient,’ ” Wiedemann said. “Old or malfunctioning air conditioning systems are energy hogs that don’t do the job effectively and run up your electricity bills. The air conditioning systems available at the Aire Conditioner Shoppe are the newest models that incorporate the latest technological advances.” He pointed out that split-ductless systems can be just as efficient as central air conditioning, or more efficient in terms of energy savings, depending on the lifestyle of the homeowner. Wiedemann, who has been in the air conditioning business

since 1979, sells and installs split-ductless systems on Oahu, as well as portable air conditioners. He also sells less expensive window units that are often the choice for apartments, condos and houses. “Even the window air conditioning units, which are generally what you see in older apartment buildings or townhomes, have been extensively improved both in efficiency and appearance. However, the tenant and/or owner needs to obtain permission from the management company and/or apartment owners association to install any type of air conditioning,” he added. Call for an appointment first. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe gives free estimates on new installs of split-ductless air conditioners. The company boasts an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau.

BREEZWAY

JANUARY 20 • 2013 7

Life’s a ‘Breez,’ thanks to latest alternative to jalousie windows I f anybody was to ask you what type of window best describes Hawaii, you would probably say a jalousie, and for good reason. Jalousies have been a part of Hawaii for generations. They offer 93 percent natural ventilation from cooling trade winds when open and can be set in various suitable positions on rainy days. They do not impede on walkways and, depending on your blade type, they can offer full, unobstructed views or total blackout.

BREEZWAY contact // 484-5999 address // 99-1451 Koaha Place email // hawaiisales@breezway.com web // www.breezway.com/hawaii

Over the years, however, Hawaii residents have found many faults with old-style aluminum clip jalousies. When closed, they don’t seal tight and allow water and dirt to get in. While running the air conditioner on those hot summer days, the cool air seeps right out through the cracks. All the exposed hardware deteriorates and seizes in our harsh salty environment, resulting in blades falling out, which could lead to harm, property damage and theft. Herein lies the challenge. Open, it’s the perfect window for Hawaii. Closed, it’s another story. This is where Breezway comes in. With more than 60 years of louver design and manufacturing experience worldwide, Breezway took these concerns to heart and designed louver window systems specifically to suit the needs and challenges of Hawaii’s homes and condos. With safety, security and performance in mind, these systems are locally manufactured at the company’s Halawa factory. They are produced in a variety of configurations and colors with various blade, handle, screen and security options. In fact, the Breezway iOS louver window is currently the only operable louver window in the United States tested and certified to Quality window installation by Island Renovation.

withstand a Category 5 hurricane. While Breezway louvers look similar to a jalousie and share the same benefits when open, they share none of the drawbacks when closed. Sealing tight to wind, water and noise, you can also run your air conditioner and not lose the cold air. All hardware is concealed and made from non-corrosive materials while meeting and exceeding new-building and energycode requirements. Recently, Breezway introduced a new louver system called Stronghold. It incorporates a pinning system that goes through the blades and secures them from the interior of the home, providing increased security and safety with the window fully open or closed. The Stronghold also ensures that blades won’t fall out, which is especially important in high-rise applications.

ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING INC.

Find comfort in a sturdy aluminum roofing system he series of storms Hawaii experienced in the last few weeks, which came with gusty trade winds and drenching rain, was fairly typical for this time of year. Many of Honolulu’s homeowners with aged or deteriorating roofs were worried that they would blow off. Similarly, people with leaky roofs worried about possible water damage inside their homes. Either of these occurrences would mean that expensive and stressful repairs were likely. Thousands of Aluminum Shake Roofing (ASR) customers residing in both single family homes and townhouse complexes did not have to worry, though, because they’ve invested in a Country Manor Shake (CMS) aluminum roof sometime during the last 24 years. When ASR owner Fred Rehm runs into one of his past customers, he often hears the same unsolicited comment: “I love my roof; during all those heavy storms, I wasn’t worried at all.” The weather extremes only confirm to these customers that they made a great decision when they bought a roof system actually engineered to weather the storm. In fact, the unique four-way interlock and continuous fastening hem (no clips) mean the roof actually holds together tighter and tighter as wind speeds increase. Unlike asphalt composition shingles, the CMS roof does

T

not deteriorate as it ages. It’s made from aluminum, doesn’t absorb water like asphalt or wood and is finished with a tough, infrared reflecting coating to keep your home cool and looking great in Hawaii’s tropical marine climate for years to come. The CMS roof system was developed in 1974 by Alcoa, but it is now manufactured in Piqua, Ohio by Classic Products. It is one of the lightest weighing roofs you can buy, and if you opt to install the patented “free-floating” insulating FoamGuard inserts, it is also completely walkable. The system is installed using stainless-steel fasteners and comes with a line of matching accessories. Plus, it is installed by ASR, a company that specializes in this system. The CMS roof is protected by a lifetime limited non-prorated manufacturer’s warranty, which covers 100 percent of the cost of repair or replacement for a variety of specific events such as blow off in winds of up to 120 miles per hour. To learn more about this roof system, call Rehm at 3838020 or email him at fredrehm@hawaiiantel.net. He’ll come out, measure your roof, make a scaled drawing and give you a detailed estimate of what it will take to install a new CMS roof on your home.

cabinetry and countertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s consumers for more than five years. Owner Wayne Cao noticed how expensive it had become to purchase the products in Hawaii and sought to bring more affordable options to residents looking to either build from scratch or remodel existing spaces. Cao noted that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stocked with inventory, and “a wide range of choices” are available for customers shopping for everything from cabinetry to hardware — including handles for an attractive, yet functional touch. In addition to the vast array of options currently available, customers may consider two new cabinet styles and five new countertop varieties that arrived recently. “When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into a new, more functional kitchen, it is most satisfying seeing their face and hearing how much their whole family enjoys this new element in their home,” Cao said. “We’re licensed contractors, so we provide full service from installation to painting.” Golden Cabinets & Stone operates out of a convenient, central location to serve its

All About Feng Shui Ever wonder what interior design and Asian themes have to do with the energetic state known as feng shui? Get the answers and more right here

a redwood forest and still create “good” feng shui. The bottom line is that feng shui requires whatever resonates with you.

with

Alice Inoue

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: My friends and I all love your column and when we get together, we can’t wait to talk about all the things you write about. As a group, we have come up with the following questions for you: How does feng shui relate to religion and superstition? Why are bathrooms considered “bad” feng shui and what do they represent in our homes? Also, is an Asian-themed look necessary for good feng shui? And finally, what is the difference between feng shui and interior design? hese are great questions and I’m happy to answer them. Thank you for reading my column!

T

Feng shui and religion Feng shui is not a “belief ” system and fits no religious or superstitious prototype. Nothing in feng shui goes against any religious belief that I know of. It is an energetic state that exists whether or not you are aware of its effect on you. Yet, feng shui is more than a “state of existence.” It is a body of wisdom that we can use to create a supportive environment for what we want in our lives. The practice of feng shui takes into consideration location, topography, buildings, shapes, interior balance, furniture placement, predecessor energy (who occupied the space prior to you), colors, elements and energy flow. When a space “feels good,” its feng shui vibratory harmony is high — often referred to as “good” feng shui. When a space “feels bad,” its vibratory state is likely chaotic — often referred to as “bad” feng shui.

Feng Shui and bathrooms Bathrooms are generally thought of as “bad” feng shui because they have more than one drain, and water, representing flow and abundance, is flushed away or goes down the drain in almost everything you do, whether using the toilet, washing your hands, bathing, showering, or brush-

ing your teeth. Although bathrooms are energetically draining, they also offer a respite from the stress and tension of our daily lives. In that sense, bathrooms are intimate transitional rooms, where a dirty body is transformed into a clean one or a plain face is transformed into a radiant one. In the bathroom, we let go of the old, releasing toxins and sometimes our tears. Ultimately, whether in the home or in a public space, the bathroom is the room that provides

the most privacy. After a long day, we look to the bathroom to unwind, perhaps by soaking in a hot tub or taking a refreshing shower. So a lot of emphasis is placed on creating a comfortable, supportive and peaceful environment in the bathroom. Feng shui and Asian themes The idea that feng shui requires an Asian theme is probably due to mainstream marketing of this ancient art, showing images of Zen gardens, lotus flowers, shoji screens and meditating Buddha figurines. Feng shui originated in Asia, so Eastern themes can and do come into play; however, at its core, feng shui is a universal nature-based philosophy, focused primarily on our feelings and our personal resonance with the environment. If your religious or spiritual beliefs include Jesus or angels, you can place those figurines around you to create a feng shui environment that works for you. Asianlooking bamboo fountains or Europeanlooking resin fountains, perhaps with cherubs pouring water, have the same function in feng shui. You can replace lotus flowers with roses, Jesus with Buddha, and scenes of a bamboo forest with scenes of

Feng shui and interior design While both feng shui and interior design consider aesthetics, feng shui goes one step further to nurture the people in the space by using nature-based principles to honor the universal energetic component that links “All That Is.” Feng shui is based on the concept that everything in this universe is connected by an unseen energy, or force, often referred to as “chi,” animating all living things. This energy connects human beings to “All That Is,” from the tiniest quark to the vastness of the cosmos. With this understanding, feng shui recognizes that, when changes are made in the home, changes are made outside the home and in the life of the individual occupying the space. This intention and understanding permeates all aspects of feng shui, and, in this one very important way, sets it apart from interior design.

Find inspiration for your home with the latest design trends O ne of the best things about the new year is making a fresh start: Whether it’s an updated fitness regime, pursuing new hobbies or getting organized, there is a slew of resolutions to try. In 2013, why not make a few changes to not only yourself, but also your home? By incorporating cutting-edge design trends, you’ll add style and color that’s perfect to kick-start the year.

Patterns that pack a punch “No one wants a house that lacks personality,” said HGTV designer and television personality Taniya Nayak. “The easiest way to infuse your style — while being ontrend — is with an impactful pattern.” According to Nayak, there are a few prints to be on the lookout for in 2013: • Chevron: a bold, dramatic, V-shaped pattern • Geometrics: graphic, colorful shapes, delivering a vintagemodern look and feel • Ombre: subtle color gradation of similar shades that’s

extremely versatile

• Ikat: tribal, swirls and diamonds reminiscent of tie-dye

• Moroccan: culturally-inspired, timeless and exotic motifs “These powerful patterns can be easily achieved with a fresh coat of paint and a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape Multi-Surface and Delicate Surface,” added Nayak. “Treated with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape can be used to create these new, intricate patterns for a haute interior. When using bold patterns, it’s best to find the right pairing of both the color and the print to not overwhelm your space. For example, if you’re looking to use bright colors, incorporate the patterns onto one accent wall or window treatment. Look for the unexpected “Just because a product is made for a specific purpose, doesn’t mean you can’t reimagine how it could be used,” said Nayak. “For example, hanging materials on the wall that

are typically used as flooring can be breathtaking. Wood planks or concrete panels, featured vertically and not just on the ground, add richness and texture.” Another great tip to accomplishing this trend is to look at construction materials in new ways. Molding and paneling can add architectural detail well beyond crown molding and baseboards. Installing framing on a wall and painting it with complementary paint colors can change the look and feel of any room. “Unique treatments instantly increase the texture, depth and visual appeal, without spending a lot of

Decorate with a mix of materials

I

f you want a great way to make a big design impact on a small budget, mix materials by creating a blend of polished and raw in a room with modern and industrial elements. “The key to updating your home with the latest trends is finding a balance,” said HGTV designer and television personality Taniya Nayak. “It’s all about making it personal and adding elements that fit your lifestyle and design personality, without breaking the bank.” The rustic look will be very popular in homes in 2013 because it’s elegant and comfortable. “It provides a feeling of richness and warmth, while still being comfortable to actually live in the space,” added Nayak. A great material for achieving the industrial and modern look is reclaimed wood. From

time or money,” said Nayak. “And the greatest feature is that these updates aren’t permanent, meaning you can continue to change your space as your style — and home design trends — evolve.” Finishing touches “The finishing touches are the final way to infuse personality into your updated space,” added Nayak. Whether it’s utilizing accents like pillows, throws and frames in your favorite colors, or a rug that reminds you of a beloved piece of clothing, your home will truly come to life when it depicts who you are in its designs.

frames, to furniture, this aged, repurposed wood can bring richness and a dose of style to any space. Mixing materials also means utilizing different finishes throughout a room. In the kitchen, using contrasting materials makes your space look personalized.Try a mix of wood and painted finishes for a more layered and collected feel. By resisting the urge to perfectly match every piece, you’ll have a current space. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

CATHY LEE

do love home style, but I’m also a clothes hound who loves fashion, which is why we opened The Boutique at Cathy’s Marketplace. And judging from how well you’ve responded to my columns about using tricks from your wardrobe to inspire your rooms, I can tell that a lot of you love dressing up as well! This week I’ll show you how to use classic furniture pieces as anchors to transition a space from a more casual to a more formal look, just as you would with clothes from your wardrobe. To illustrate this, I’ve picked out this black halter jumpsuit, a classic staple in many women’s wardrobes. This look never completely goes out of style, but there are times when it’s super hot, and fortunately now is one of those times. On our mannequin, this knit St. John jumpsuit is ready for a night on the town with black and gold accessories and a chunky pearl necklace. You might think the only other accompaniment might be sky-high heels, but not true! How about toning down the glam for some casual chic? Simply swap out the accessories with this blackand-white Coach bag, a black-and-white bracelet and kitten heels, and you’ve got an outfit that’s sassy and stylish! You’re already doing this, right? Well, the same principles apply to classic pieces in your home. Although I know some women would argue with me, most of us spend more money on our furnishings than our outfits. And large staple pieces aren’t as easy to change out as a blouse. But what you can have fun with are the accents that go with these pieces. So I’m not saying

Accessorize it! In the same way you might dress an outfit up or down, some strategic accessorizing at home can give any piece of furniture a formal or casual look

throw out that old sofa or coffee table, just change out some things around them. Here I’ve picked out another classic: a white, down-filled, slip-covered chair. Its luxurious, subtly striped fabric has a slight sheen. This chair can go from natural and earthy to glam and vavoom with just a few easy switches. For a casual look, I went organic. I chose a pillow whose pattern of birds and branches ties in to the lamp and other accessories on the side table for a scenario that’s natural, cool, comfortable. If you want to take it a step further, imagine a sea-grass area rug beneath the arrangement. Other things you could add to an organic vignette

would be bamboo sticks in a vase or wooden picture frames. Bringing in white accents would tie in with the chair and add a fresh, beachy feel. Now, how about going sophisticated? I’ve kept the chair but changed out the side table for a white ceramic high-gloss one with a gray faux-fur throw, and liquid-like silver candlesticks that add just the right shimmer. And can you imagine a very blingy art deco mirror behind the chair against an accent wall painted a dark charcoal to bring out the throw? Other elements that would enhance the luxe would be reflective accessories with glass or mirror, luxurious fabrics, tone-on-tone colors like whites and creams or high-contrast wall accents like deep purple or sealskin. Quick transformations, same chair: All you need to do is change out the accessories — just like you do in front of your own closet every day. Cathy Lee is president and designer of

Turn your bath into an oasis with a refinished tub, sink D o you miss soaking in a bubble bath at the end of a long day because your bathtub is old and stained? Why not consider refinishing it? LOKAHI GARAGE EXPERTS

Look no further than your garage for home equity T he newest phrase on the street for home improvement is “garage enhancement,” and it is a great way to add to your equity without buying or building a new home. Interestingly, most of us don’t think of our garages very much. In fact, many of us don’t think of them as an asset at all. Research shows that many home sellers and even salespeople for new residential developments do not show the garage to potential buyers. Typically a garage comprises 20 to 30 percent of the footprint of the structure, so to not have any value-adding design to such a large area is very surprising.

LOKAHI GARAGE EXPERTS contact // 596-8833 address // 518 Kamani St. web // www.garageexperts.com

Perhaps this is because the garage has historically been an empty shell of four walls and a concrete floor. You are lucky if you have drywall, let alone painted walls in yours. With a garage enhancement, much value can be added — and seen aesthetically, felt ergonomically and realized financially. More times than not, potential home buyers will see a finished garage or “enhanced garage” and choose to buy that property over a property without a garage enhancement. Not only does a garage enhancement increase the value of your property, but it can be an asset to your daily life as well. A garage remodel can create a place with workbenches and hanging tool storage to efficiently work on hobbies, mechanics and home projects. It also can feature attractive cabinets, flooring that’s easy-to-clean and additional storage. An enhanced garage can even be used for overflow entertaining and family gatherings. To many of us, it seems that our garages have turned into mismanaged and disorganized storage units that are conve-

niently located close to home. Think of a functional garage with an attractive garage floor that is easy to clean and maintain, and leaves you worry-free from stains, unsightly rough concrete, cracks and oil stains. Now imagine that you can have this revolutionary new system installed in just one day with a manufacturer’s material lifetime warranty not to peel or delaminate. Then, imagine it completely organized with ergonomic custom cabinets, work-benches or even an entertainment system or bar to suit your individual needs. Lokahi Garage Experts’ products are proudly made in the U.S. and are the most durable coatings and cabinet systems in the industry — so much so that Lokahi Garage Experts epoxy coatings and cabinets come with lifetime material warranties. Lokahi Garage Experts can help you “unclutter your world.” For a free in-home estimate, call 596-8833.

TENIBAC KITCHEN CABINETS & CASEWORK

JANUARY 20 • 2013 21

Spice up your interior with unique custom cabinetry D esigning your kitchen involves more than just placing boxes on the wall, which is what many of the less expensive cabinet companies do. If you’re going to invest time and money into your home, then invest the time to learn about your kitchen designer. To start with, is your designer asking you what you want to achieve when remolding your kitchen? Are you looking for more space or a more convenient way to access the space in your kitchen? This is also known as ergonomics: the study of designing equipment and devices to fit the human body, its movement and its cognitive abilities. If you have a small kitchen, you’ll want more usable space that is easy to access, while allowing the design to flow well. Is your designer asking you about your budget? And what does it include or not include? Here are some tips on how to answer these questions: • Make a reasonable budget. Most designers will help by giving you ideas on what to expect price-wise. • Make a list of what your budget includes, like cabinets, pulls or knobs, appliances, ect. Just as important, make a list of what it does not like electrical work, plumbing, ect. • Let the designer know that you are going to get other quotes with this same list. He or she might try to match or be under your budget to get the job. Please take note: Is

your budget reasonable and are you looking for low, medium or high end cabinets? A tip is to ask what kind of warranty comes with the cabinets, what kind of finish is on them and how long it will last in our humid, salty air? Then, of course, there is style. Are you looking for traditional, modern, contemporary Hawaiian or Island-style? How this is going to complement your house and enrich the look of your kitchen? This will require showing you many different cabinet door styles and countertops. Tenibac Kitchen Cabinets & Casework has more than 200 door styles in its showroom. The company specializes in fusing custom cabinets with affordable pricing. The team at Tenibac has both the design and installation experience necessary to help you create what will turn an empty kitchen or an existing space into your dream kitchen to be both beautiful and functional.Thinking outside the box gives

the company the advantage of coming up with outstanding kitchen designs based on creativity and a practicality. The company offers Aristocratic Cabinets for that exotic look. That is why it is “The Architect and Designers’ choice cabinet company. It builds what others won’t. Then there is its affordable Tradewind cabinet line with 3/4-inch maple veneer plywood quality construction and full extension, soft-closing drawer guides. Both come with a life time warranty and Tenibac Kitchen Cabinets & Casework will install them. By choosing to remodel your kitchen, the company will work with you to make it a pleasant place to be in, while increasing the value of your home.

Quality that’s affordable BY SARAH PACHECO

ELITE DESIGN GROUP LLC

Before purchasing a new set of cabinets for your new kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, there are some important things you should consider. First, keep in mind that cabinets account for 40 to 50 percent of the total cost of your kitchen or bathroom remodel, so setting your total budget figure will be one of the first things you’ll need to do.

Versatility of semi-custom

Semi-custom cabinets are factory-built

Make quality your first choice

No matter what type of cabinet you select, all cabinets should have solid frames, door and drawer fronts, reinforced corners and closed backs, and the finish on the wood should be smooth. Also, cabinet drawers and doors will be opened and closed many times throughout the day, so they should operate smoothly and quietly each time. Cabinets help establish a mood

Are stock cabinets for you?

Stock cabinets are the least expensive option and are constructed in standard shapes and sizes; however, they are available in a limited number of woods or finishes and offer few style options beyond basic drawers and cupboards. If you plan on living in your home for only a short time or are working with a tight budget, stock cabinets are your best bet. But if this is going to be the kitchen or bath of your dreams, you should look for topquality construction and materials found with semi-custom and custom cabinets.

in standard sizes with many options for storage, design and style. The high end of cabinet construction is custom cabinets, which are constructed in either a workroom to designer specifications or on-site in any style and finish you choose. needs: pullout shelves for pots and pans; a lazy Susan for spices; a wine rack; vertical dividers for trays and cookie sheets; even an appliance garage or pullout bins are all just some of the standard add-ons available when ordering these higher-end cabinets. And if your space is too narrow for a cabinet and counter, a tall pantry closet

Finally, remember that the cabinets you select will set the tone of your new kitchen or bathroom and play a major role in transforming your space. Browse magazines and stores to get an idea for what suits you. Look for styles that blend well with the architecture of your home as well as the interior design of other rooms. But don’t get bogged down by all of these decisions. Elite Design Group LLC offers free estimates and consultations for kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects, and its professional in-house kitchen designer can help you realize the perfect set of cabinets for your home.
