NEWS AT THE NET December 2018 Edition

May 2017 Edition

Hi everyone, Welcome to the Fourth edition of News at the Net, bringing you the latest from NZ Wheelchair Tennis PERRY NZ WHEELCHAIR OPEN

ITF Group 3 and Futures

We are excited to be starting a pilot program in Auckland with Matt Jones (Clevedon) who came down to watch a bit of our Parafed Waikato Activ8 tennis tournament in early November. He currently coaches Gabby Wright from Clevedon and has done so for the past 6 months.

The 2018 post tournament reviews at committee level and followed up with a meeting with TNZ CEO Julie Paterson which gave a clear picture that the NZ ITF3 tournament was benefitting the overseas players but for various reasons it became tough for our NZ players to support. This was partly due to the expense of entering the ITF3 and getting to Auckland from around the country and possibly the time of year. It was also possible that our kiwi players felt out of their depth at the Group 3 level. Therefore, a decision was made for 2019 to only hold the Permobil Christchurch Futures which will become the Permobil NZ Open. A big shout out to Permobil for their ongoing sponsorship of the tournament. For those wishing to enter please visit to complete the online entry form

IPINS Good news regarding the IPINS. The ITF will only charge $US10.00 for an annual IPIN so please if you are entering the Christchurch Permobil NZ Open get them sorted early. With Christmas nearly on us the ITF seems to shut down for a number of weeks leaving only a couple of skeleton staff to handle business.

Gabby has been hiring a chair off Parafed Auckland who have agreed to help us get some people in some of their chairs over the next few months so more people can enjoy wheelchair tennis over summer. Thanks to Matt and Parafed Auckland for helping with this initiative. More details overleaf.

PARAFED WAIKATO ACTIV8 TOURNAMENT This tournament was a great success. We had to move it to November to drum up some more players but once people remember they love tennis it’s all good. We held a singles tournament on the Saturday which included one set each against all players – 7 in total. Dave Venter was the ultimate winner of this tournament with Brendan Mes being runner up. On the Sunday we ran a doubles tournament and this was also great with Tiffiney Perry and Dave Venter winning this and James McCleod and Terri Hererahi were runners up. Our AGM was held at the tournament which was to elect new committee members for New Zealand Wheelchair Tennis and discuss business. There was a 2 hour coaching clinic on the Sunday afternoon following the tournament which was fantastic to have 3 new junior girls take part. Hamilton coach Ray Bos took this session. It was great to see some new interest in this great socially competitive sport. We will definitely be following up with these players next year to run something else in Term 1 in Hamilton.

Big thanks to Nikki Howlett who ran a tight ship and also organized our BBQ lunch each day of the tournament.

ANNUAL AWARDS The Tennis NZ Awards Gala was held on Thursday December 13th and it was a lovely evening attended by Chris Harvey and Tiffiney Perry. Glenn Barnes was once again awarded Wheelchair NZ Tennis Player of the year. The award was collected by Tiffiney Perry on his behalf. It was great to be in some top tennis company!

Thanks for reading & have a Merry Christmas!

Thank you to our 2018 Sponsors & Supporters
