Mel Rosenthal Long ago but not so far away in distance or in time was a place that was devoid of hope, and neglected and rejected by the larger society. The story of the South Bronx in the nineteen seventies is one that captivates the minds of New Yorkers to this day, and is also a warning for this city or any city, that is going through a serious downturn, of the consequences of neglect. Mel Rosenthal through his pictures in his book “In the South Bronx of America “tells the story of how greed and corruption destroyed a neighborhood through a lack of regulation in fire insurance. It removes the stigma that is attached to the people that struggle to survive in a nightmarish landscape, who like any people, want the rest of the world to not only acknowledge their existence but respect them as fellow human beings who should never be forgotten.
