NYSGA VOLUNTEERS
We could not accomplish all that we do each season without the time, energy and expertise provided by our incredible group of 150+ statewide volunteers.
Our volunteer base is built of dedicated and selfless individuals who share a strong passion for golf and are directly involved within one of two main areas: Tournaments and Course Rating . We rely heavily on both groups to efficiently and effectivley provide high-quality services for our members and clubs.
The NYSGA is always looking for new, passionate committee members to contribute in other areas of expertise including foundation initiatives, communications, history, photography, and more!

The posting season at NYSGA clubs began on April 15 and ended October 31. It was the sixth golf season under the World Handicap System and another year with golf participation rising in New York State and across the country.

Each year, the NYSGA welcomes seasonal interns, supported by the USGA’s P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship Program.
We bring on interns in both tournament operations and communications, and provide them with an introduction to golf administration and an opportunity to build strong industry experience.

CLUB & MEMBER SERVICES
The New York State Golf Association was originally established in 1923 to conduct a sanctioned state amateur golf championship and help promote the game across New York.
A century later, the golf landscape has changed and adapted, and so has the NYSGA. Our association now offers an array of member and club services that support our statewide community, promote the competitive spirit, and support the best interests of the game.
We proudly serve our member clubs in several ways, such as Course Rating, Handicapping, Tournament Management support, and offer various playing opportunities hosted at their facilities.
Among the hundreds of member clubs, over 45,000 individual golfers are now using their USGA GHIN Handicap Index licensed through the NYSGA. Beyond that, we offer playing opportunities to members of all ages across the state, whether it be vying for a championship crown or competing for net and/or gross prizes in an Amateur Series event.
Each spring, we hold free Rules of Golf training seminars available for members to ask questions, get involved and become better-educated golfers.
Lastly, we keep our members informed and up-to-date on all that’s happening in our state golf scene through digital communications.
COURSE RATING SERVICES
Course Ratings are an essential part of the Handicap System, and the NYSGA is responsible for overseeing and implementing the USGA Course Rating System at both public and private golf courses around upstate New York.
Golf courses are required to be re-rated at least once every ten years, with updated results for each set of tees on the course. Clubs often make design changes with new features (tee boxes, bunkers, ponds, etc.) or add new sets of tees, which requires the NYSGA’s teams to visit the course, and closely inspect the changes and how they will alter or change the slope and rating of the course. When this occurs, our team works closely with the club staff, membership and head superintendent to gather important information needed to provide a precise and reliable rating.
The NYSGA has regional Course Rating teams throughout the state, complete with over 70 active volunteers to ensure clubs are carefully inspected and rated accurately.
Annually, more than two dozen member courses require one of the regional teams to conduct an updated Course Rating.

RULES EDUCATION
The NYSGA holds rules seminars each spring at member clubs across upstate New York. These free educational opportunities are open to the public.
The main goals of these seminars are to provide an overview of each rule, identify common mistakes in application, and answer any specific questions attendees may have.
Since 2019, the NYSGA has addressed the new Rules of Golf and provided an in-depth overview of each specific change.
For NYSGA committee members, staff leadership provides multiple in-depth seminars each winter/ spring and oversight at championships, the Amateur Series events and USGA qualifiers.
The NYSGA’s staff annually provides seminars for the various PGA sections and Golf Course Superintendent Association sections.
Beyond that, the NYSGA is a rules education resource for its statewide community and is available to answer questions on the Rules of Golf that members may have throughout the year.

COMMUNICATIONS
Much like the golf industry, media has continued to change and evolve seemingly every year, with digital tools like mobile apps, social media, and the internet becoming central to how people consume information and connect with others. Recognizing this ongoing shift, the NYSGA has continued to prioritize modern communication channels to engage our members and reach new, younger audiences more effectively. By emphasizing digital engagement over traditional media, we’re strengthening our connection to the amateur golf community and expanding our reach across New York State.
In 2025, the NYSGA’s digital presence expanded significantly, marking one of the strongest years yet for reach, engagement, and audience growth across all platforms. Our communications and marketing efforts delivered measurable results and helped elevate the Association’s visibility like never before.
Social media performance reached record levels, with NYSGA channels generating over 4 million
impressions, which is a testament to growing interest and interaction statewide. Instagram followers increased by 79 percent year-over-year, while video content drove nearly 550,000 views, a 41 percent jump from 2024. LinkedIn, which we launched in 2024, surpassed 1,000 followers and continues to deliver high-quality engagement among industry professionals and golf enthusiasts. Across every major metric (reach, engagement, and follower growth) NYSGA’s social channels are showing consistent and meaningful progress.
Email communications remain one of our most effective tools, maintaining above-average open and deliverability rates. The 2024 transition to HubSpot as our central database has proven instrumental in optimizing member engagement. The platform enables us to personalize outreach, track interactions more efficiently, and ensure that every touchpoint delivers value to our members.
Our paid media campaigns also performed efficiently in 2025, delivering broad awareness at low CPMs, particularly through Meta Ads. To further
strengthen our marketing capabilities, we continued our partnership with an outside agency, a collaboration that has expanded awareness of the NYSGA brand especially among public golfers and newer members of the golf community.
The NYSGA website remains the organization’s central digital hub for news, competitions, and resources. Each year, we focus on improving usability, modernizing its appearance, and enhancing mobile performance. Looking ahead, we are planning a comprehensive website revitalization to align with emerging digital trends, making it more dynamic, accessible, and engaging for users statewide.
As we continue to evolve, the NYSGA remains committed to delivering content that informs, inspires, and connects. The momentum from 2025 underscores our dedication to building a vibrant and inclusive digital community that reflects the passion and diversity of amateur golf in New York.
DISTRICT ASSOCIATIONS
The NYSGA provides support, resources, staffing and oversight for two historic district associations in upstate New York: the Buffalo District Golf Association (BDGA) and the Syracuse District Golf Association (SDGA)
The NYSGA has been working closely with the SDGA since the early 2000s, overseeing the preperation and administration of their tournament schedule, general oversight and logistical support. In 2018, the NYSGA partnered with the Buffalo District to provide enhanced staffing support and oversight, improved resources, and administration of their championship schedule.
Supporting these venerable organizations and helping to foster stronger relationships within the district communities is of high priority. The NYSGA has made strides towards providing additional support for other city, district, and regional amateur golf competitions within New York State over the past few years. From tournament promotion via the NYSGA’s “NYS Golf Calendar,” to email marketing support and tournament administration support, the association is focused on supporting these events further going forward.

NYSGA FOUNDATION
The NYSGA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) and charitable arm of the Association, has awarded over $350,000 in college scholarships and grants supporting junior golf in New York State since 2009.
The NYSGA Scholarship Fund annually awards scholarships totaling $30,000 to exceptional high school students who are employed by NYSGA Member Clubs. These students are united by their impressive academic achievements, financial need, and passion for golf.
The Foundation also awards substantial grants supporting junior golf initiatives. These initiatives include small, regional programs providing on-course instruction and nationally recognized programs such as the First Tee’s National School Program and LPGA *USGA Girls Golf. This level of giving is not possible without the support of the members of the association, whose membership fees and donations direclty fund these initatives.

The NYSGA wrapped up another season of championship golf competition in the Empire State. In 2025, we conducted a full tournament schedule, including twenty one NYSGA championship titles held between East Setauket and Clarence (a driving distance of 444 miles or 7 1/2 hours in a car!).
Fourteen players captured their first state titles including Andy Bernatovicz, Jim Burns, Nicole Criscone, Owen Corby, Francisco Cupp, MerriLyn Gibbs, Todd Jackson, Jim Johnson, Hayden Knapp, Liam Moloney, Louise-Anne Morin, Amelie Phung, Jared Trudeau & Lorraine Vultaggio.
Fourteen others reclaimed a past title or captured a new one including Robert Branham, Anthony Delisanti, Kyle Downey, Natalie Grainger, Barbara Harrison, Susan Kahler, Kim Kaul, Janice LaVigne, Anthony Maglisco, Jim Mueller, Ingrid Narken, Wade Sarkis, Jim Scorse and Natalie Wasik.
This year’s schedule was hosted by a group of New York’s top clubs including Brookfield Country Club, Columbia Golf & Country Club, Country Club of Troy, Eagle Crest Golf Club, Leatherstocking Golf Course, McGregor Links Country Club, Seven Oaks Golf Club, Soaring Eagles Golf Club, Turning Stone Resort & Casino (Kaluhyat & Shenandoah), and Yahnundasis Golf Club.
We’d like to congratulate all the 2025 New York State Amateur champions and runner-ups on their great performances this season and recognize them for their outstanding accomplishments!
Our dedicated volunteers and committee members are the lifeblood of the NYSGA, and serve in an array of roles during championships. Without their assistance, we would not be able to provide the experience we currently offer to players at all NYSGA events. We’d like to thank them for all their continued support in serving the game of golf!

NYSGA AMATEUR SERIES
The season-long Amateur Series continued to bring NYSGA members to exciting golf venues across Upstate New York throughout the 2025 season.
These fun, competitive events are handicapped, allowing players of all ages and abilities to compete on an even playing field against others from around the state. Players are flighted based on their handicap, in which they compete among that group for net prizes. Players finishing with low gross scores in their flights earn prizes as well.
All NYSGA members with active handicap indexes are eligible to compete in the Amateur Series. Grab a friend and check it out!

NEW YORK STATE GOLF HALL OF FAME
The NYSGA Hall of Fame was established in 2012 with the mission to identify, recognize, and enshrine the state’s finest amateur and professional golf competitors, as well as those who have made outstanding contributions to the game throughout New York by their careers as golf teachers, coaches, mentors, and volunteers to the game.
An induction ceremony is held each fall at the NYSGA Annual Meeting. This November, the newest class was inducted at Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, comprised of Debbie Austin, Moira Dunn-Bohls, Ed Furgol, Craig Harmon, Wayne Levi, Sherrill Sherman and George Zahringer III
